Long Island Couple Facing Murder Charges After Victim Of Vicious Attack Dies

LYNBROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) – A Long Island couple is facing murder charges, stemming from a 2016 attack. Ralph Keppler, a 27-year-old former correction officer, and Francesca Kiel, 21, were arrested Sunday in Lynbrook. Authorities said they brutally attacked Kiel’s mother, 56-year-old Theresa Kiel, with a barbell on December 4, 2016 in Long Beach. She lost an eye and was in a coma until she died Saturday. Police said Keppler and the elder Kiel were in a legal battle over a dating app they created together. (Credit: Nassau County Police Department) Theresa Kiel’s attorney told reporters Keppler had threatened her for years. He was previously charged with attempted murder and assault in the case but was out on bail. Francesca Kiel’s lawyer said Monday she loves her mother and has no idea who attacked her. Concerned Nassau Residents Record Scofflaw Drivers Rolling Through Stop Signs On Long Island

SYOSSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — One neighborhood on Long Island is rolling on drivers as they roll through, or even blow past, stop signs. Residents are recording the scofflaws on home video and calling police to issue tickets. On Elderberry Road in Syosset it’s more than a daily occurrence. Drone Force 2 Flew above a residential intersection which was a three-way stop with three obvious stop signs. Still, cameras caught drivers turning into or off South Oyster Bay Road, appearing to completely flout the law. “I literally have to sometimes stand in the middle just so people know that there’s a school bus here and children are crossing to get to the bus,” homeowner and parent Bhavin Manani said. The El-Miniawi family is worried about children and pets. “Cars come out of nowhere, sometimes my dog runs out of the gate,” Jessica said. Residents appealed to Nassau Police, who promptly responded. Even with multiple officers in plain sight, scofflaws never braked. In less than an hour, ten tickets were issued. Cops discovered distracted drivers, many who were pulled over said they didn’t see the signs or thought they had stopped. “It’s a town road, adjacent to a county light, next to a state parkway,” Nassau legislator Josh Lafazan said. “So what we’re going to have to do is get together, a coalition of elected officials.” But who will pay? Nassau police say written summonses are up 16 percent, so flashing lights, speed bumps, and speed cameras will all be considered. Running the stop sign, plus Nassau County’s public safety fee, could mean a ticket costs up to $330 plus three points on your license.

SPCA: First Coyote Ever Spotted In Nassau County, Long Island

ROSLYN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Officials issued a warning to residents of Nassau County after a coyote was reportedly spotted. Animal control says the coyote was recently seen in the Roslyn – Searingtown area. Nassau County SPCA says it’s the first sighting of a coyote ever in the county. Residents are urged to avoid leaving pet food outside. It’s also advised to keep your pets inside at night and to remove brush and dry grass from around your home.

NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Nassau County police say a New Cassel teenager has been found nearly a month after he went missing. Family members told CBS2’s Reena Roy 19-year-old Louis Germosen is safe and sound. They reported him missing after receiving cryptic text messages saying to search Hempstead Lake State Park. Dozens of police officers scoured the dense brush in the park, while divers searched the lake. Germosen’s mother feared the MS-13 gang was behind his disappearance.

LI Police Officer Injured By Alleged Drunk Driver Says Crash ‘Changed My Life Forever’

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A Long Island police officer walked into court with a cane Wednesday and faced the alleged drunk driver who left him seriously injured on New Year’s Eve. CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff was there as the officer spoke publicly for the first time about the crash. Nassau County Police Officer Willard Gomes said he’s lucky to be alive, though he’s still recovering from his injuries. “Long lasting injuries — I’m going to have to deal with them for the rest of my life,” he said. “It’s going to be a reminder every single day when I wake up that on January 1, 2018, somebody decided to drink and drive and changed my life forever.” Gomes was on DWI patrol in Greenvale when he became a victim himself. Prosecutors said Keith Dillon, of New Hyde Park, was driving 70 mph with a .27 blood alcohol level – more than three times the legal limit. He was allegedly in a rage after a family argument that followed an all-you-can-drink New Year’s celebration. “We’re here because of his selfish actions. We’re here because he stupidly decided to drive drunk,” said Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. “This is the human toll of what happens on our roadways when people make those decisions.” Surveillance video shows Dillon traveling south on Glen Cove Road, then crossing the median and slamming into Gomes’s unmarked police car heading north. The litany of elevated charges against Dillon takes into account a prior DWI arrest, Gusoff reported. “My client, yes he had a prior driving while impaired incident, but has otherwise led a completely law-abiding, respectable life. This is a tragic event, he feels incredibly remorseful for what happened. If he could take that night back, he would,” defense attorney Marc Gann said. “I’m sure the defendant is remorseful, he’s not a career criminal. I’m sure he was out having a good time, but there’s no excuse for drinking and driving,” said Gomes. “I was out that night trying to prevent such an injury to somebody else and it is ironic that it happened to me. Hopefully I can be a lesson to someone else.” Dillon’s attorney said his client would like to resolve the case quickly without a trial, hinting he would accept a plea deal if offered, Gusoff reported. He is facing five to 15 years in prison on Wednesday’s upgraded charges. Gomes is in rehab, working toward returning to the police force.

Manhasset Man Arrested In Child Exploitation Investigation

NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Manhasset man has been arrested as a part of a child exploitation investigation. According to police, 70-year-old Ashok Vora engaged in sexual conversation online with an undercover agent who was posing as an 11-year-old female. Police say he also exposed himself on a web camera. Vora was charged with attempted disseminating indecent material to a minor. The undercover operation was conducted by the Nassau County Special Victim’s Squad-Child Exploitation Section in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations. Detectives request anyone that has been contacted online by the defendant, who uses the username KevinNY, to contact Special Victim’s Unit at 516-573-4022.

‘It’s Very Frustrating:’ Nassau County Bridge Problems Leaves Residents Stranded

(CBSNewYork) — Bridge problems in Bayville, Long Island has many Nassau County drivers frustrated. They say the broken bridge is leaving them stranded and preventing them from getting across Oyster Bay. Richard Valicenti knows the exact spot where the Bayville bridge splits into two because he sees it stuck all the time. “You just get that bad feeling right away because you know it’s going to be a bad day,” said Valicenti. He owns the bridge marine right next to the draw bridge and says the broken bridge is hurting business. “It’s very frustrating,” said Valicenti. “It’s been going on forever.” The bridge is owned by Nassau County and connects the village of Mill Neck to Bayville. The problem is, it regularly gets stuck in the upright position after opening for boats to pass by, stranding people on both sides – sometimes for as long as 24 hours. “You don’t even know when the bridge is going up,” said resident Yenny Crisy. “And it’s dangerous.” “I did a walk from Oyster Bay down here, and I thought shoot, what if the bridge is stuck?” asked resident Marjorie Marshall. “I’m going to have to walk all the way around or swim.” The bridge also gets jammed when it’s down so operators can’t raise it for large boats to get through. There is a detour drivers can take using Bayville Avenue, but most will tell you, it’s too far. “I try to be patient but it’s annoying and frustrating,” said Jen Jones of Bayville. Josh lafazan is the Nassau County legislator for the area and took on the role six months ago. “Our infrastructure in Nassau County is aging rapidly and this bridge is the epitome of aging infrastructure,” said lafazan. “The pieces inside the bridge are so old that they continue to malfunction.” He says the county plans to fix the bridge next year but it won’t be finished until 2021. He’s hoping to expedite the process. “We need to do better as a government, the bare minimum we can do is ensure the safety and well being of our community and if someone is getting stranded, with no way of getting home, then we are failing as a government,” said lafazan. Legislator lafazan plans on holding a public forum this Thursday night to figure out a solution. Nassau County Police Search For Suspect Accused Of Exposing Himself To 2 Girls

BALDWIN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Police are searching for a man accused of exposing himself to two 13-year-old girls in Nassau County. Around 8 p.m. Monday, the girls were walking on the sidewalk along Verity Lane in Baldwin, near Steele Elementary School. Police said the suspect pulled up to the curb in a gray four-door sedan and allegedly asked, “How do I get to the Dunkin’ Donuts?” When they didn’t respond, police said he exposed himself and took off. “It’s disgusting. It’s a pervert, disgusting,” one person said. Police are searching for a man accused of exposing himself to two 13-year-old girls in Nassau County. (Credit: Nassau County Police Department) The incident was unnerving for people who live nearby, like Barbara Singh, who has two young granddaughters. “It’s ridiculous. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe that this happened around our neighborhood,” she said. “It’s very quiet, but you never know in the quiet neighborhoods, you never know what happens.” “I’m going to keep an eye out. I mean, I see someone like this, I’ll probably just end up breaking his legs if I see him around here,” said resident Dave Kimmel. “These poor girls end up getting traumatized from something so ridiculous like this, it’s just incredible.” Police describe the suspect as a white man, around 20 to 27 years old, with shoulder-length blond hair, blue or green eyes and a beard. Nassau County Police also investigated another case of public lewdness Friday morning in Westbury. At this point, they do not believe they incidents are connected.
