EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A horse racing track in northern New Jersey is set to bring legal sports betting to New York City’s doorstep. The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford will begin taking sports bets at 11 a.m. Saturday. The track is located in the sports complex where the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets play, about six miles (10 kilometers) from New York City. The daily fantasy sports provider FanDuel is running the space, and says bettors will be able to wager on the World Cup final, men’s and women’s tennis, and Major League Baseball games. Later this year, gamblers will be able to place bets on everything from first downs to wins and losses in all major American sports. “The things that we will be bringing will be like being able to bet in the middle of a game, so that as the score changes the odds change,” FanDuel Chief Operating Officer and President Kip Levin says. It will become the fourth sports betting outlet in New Jersey, following the state’s U.S. Supreme Court victory in a case that cleared the way for all 50 states to legalize sports betting. Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport, near the Jersey shore, and the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City already offer it. Those three outlets took in $16.4 million in sports bets in the first two weeks it was legal. Some of the money raised was bet on events which haven’t even happened yet, like the World Series. In taxes alone, New Jersey has raised almost $294,000. “There was no legislation done in New York, so everybody in New York has to come, if they want to make a legal sports bet, here to the Meadowlands or Monmouth or Atlantic City,” Monmouth Racetrack CEO Jason Settlemoir said. Legislators predicted sports betting would raise 20 to 40 million dollars in tax revenue per year. While they haven’t made that money so far, they expect football season to bring them closer to that target. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A new state audit has found the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York has lost millions in unpaid tolls. The audit released by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli blames cashless tolling for at least $1.6 million in unpaid tolls since January 2017. The report finds most of the money was lost when 8 of the MTA’s bridges and tunnels went cashless. On Thursday afternoon, lawmakers will hold a news conference at Nyack Memorial Park to demand the authority cancel its $72 million 3-year contract extension with the company, Conduent. The audit cites a variety of reasons for the unbilled tolls, including license plate images that couldn’t be processed and out-of-state drivers with temporary license plates. DiNapoli also says the agency needs to do a better job of collecting that money that is owed. MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Cedrick Fulton says he “takes exception” to several statements in the audit. The MTA says unbilled transactions account for less than 1 percent of tolls collected. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Every summer day that passes brings many families closer to the cold reality of paying for college this fall. “We’re getting very close to an extraordinarily high expenditure that we knew was in our future but now is suddenly in front of our nose. It creates stress for everyone,” said college financing expert Joel Peck. The good news is that college savings are the highest in years. The average family has more than $18,000 set aside towards a savings target of about $55,000. The most popular savings instruments are 529 plans, which hold 30 percent of college savings. Peck recommends using the money from that plan in junior or senior year. “A 529 plan grows tax free,” said Peck. “So what you want to do is have that available as long as possible to grow tax free as much as possible.” The process for finding need-based and merit-based money starts with filling out FAFSA, or free application for federal student aid. Available online October 1, FAFSA crunches your income and asset numbers to come up with your EFC , or expected family contribution. “If we’re starting with a family with an income of $80,000, they’re expected to come up with $20,000 towards their child’s education,” said Peck. Peck works with clients on how to appeal to a college financial aid office for lower tuition. He says reductions of $5,000-to-$10,000 are not uncommon. “There’s money available, when a college wants a student, they find the money,” said Peck. It often takes a combination of savings, loans, scholarships and gifts from relatives to make that college dream a reality.
