PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trevor Williams outdueled Jacob deGrom, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-0 win over the New York Mets on Saturday. Williams (9-7) allowed five hits in six innings with five strikeouts and three walks. He hasn’t allowed a run in 17 straight innings since he surrendered three in the third inning of a 17-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. Pittsburgh’s first run came after deGrom (5-6) began the sixth inning with two strikeouts. Gregory Polanco singled down the right-field line before stealing second. Colin Moran singled to right, scoring Polanco. David Freese, who had five RBIs in a 5-4 win Friday, pinch-hit in the seventh, grounding out but scoring Jordan Luplow from third. Adam Frazier followed with a double to right, driving in Jordy Mercer from second to make it 3-0. Moran drove in Polanco again with a single up the middle in the eighth, extending it to 4-0. Polanco was 3 for 4 with two doubles; Moran was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Francisco Cervelli made it 5-0 later in the eighth with a single that scored Luplow. Williams got out of trouble in consecutive innings, first when he got Devin Mesoraco to ground into a double play with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. An inning later, he struck out Brandon Nimmo and forced Wilmer Flores to pop up to third, stranding runners on first and second. deGrom lost for the fourth time since June 28, when he last won a start. He allowed three runs on eight hits, his most surrendered this season, with five strikeouts in seven innings. ROSTER MOVES Mets: INF Luis Guillorme was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. The 23-year-old rookie has a .172 batting average with four RBIs in 29 games with New York this season. Pirates: OF Austin Meadows and INF/OF Jose Osuna were recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. Osuna, who hit .196 with two home runs and seven RBIs in his first 23 games with Pittsburgh this season, played first base Saturday. PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates needed someone to lean on with three of their better hitters out of the lineup Friday. On cue, David Freese came through in a big way. Freese drove in five runs, including an RBI single in the ninth inning that lifted the Pirates over the New York Mets 5-4. He homered in going 3 for 3 with two walks, helping the Pirates win for the 12th time in 14 games. “It’s wild,” Freese said. “We just have to step up. These are the dog days, I guess, and it’s tough out there. Bodies are dragging a little bit. But we are in the hunt, that’s what’s cool. They beat the Pirates 12-6 Thursday night behind Asdrubal Cabrera’s homer and two doubles – Cabrera was traded to Philadelphia on Friday. Josh Harrison led off the Pittsburgh ninth with an infield single against rookie reliever Tim Peterson (2-2). A single by Gregory Polanco put runners at the corner and Elias Diaz was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freese hit a drive over center fielder Brandon Nimmo for the win. Pittsburgh was without outfielders Starling Marte and Corey Dickerson, who were out with a left hand contusion and left hamstring discomfort, respectively. First baseman Josh Bell played two innings before leaving with left side discomfort. “We didn’t have a lot of depth, truthfully,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “That’s one thing these guys have done all year long, is that they show up. Whoever is available plays and they depend upon one another.” Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez (4-2) got the win after striking out two in a scoreless ninth. After Freese gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead with a two-out, two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded in the fifth, the Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Reliever Edgar Santana struck out Kevin Plawecki and had a chance to get out of the inning when Jose Reyes sharply lined out to left fielder Jordan Luplow. Michael Conforto paused after charging from third, but Luplow’s throw sailed to the backstop, allowing Conforto to continue and beat the tag at home, tying it at 4. Mets reliever Seth Lugo gave up the go-ahead single to Freese in the fifth, after replacing starter Jason Vargas. In his first start since June 19, Vargas allowed three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. “I thought (Vargas) did a good job,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “To push him any further than we did, I thought would be tough. He started getting a little tired there at the end.” Without getting the decision, Vargas was still pleased with his return. “It’s kind of hard to say what you anticipate, but I felt really solid out there,” Vargas said. “I felt like I was able to make some pitches. I made that one mistake to Freese that he really went out there and hammered, but I felt like I did a good job.” That one mistake led to Freese’s home run, which cut the Mets’ 3-0 lead to 3-2 in the second. Conforto gave New York that lead with a three-run homer in the first. Pirates starter Ivan Nova gave up three earned runs in five innings. ROSTER MOVES Mets: Cabrera was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for RHP Franklyn Kilome. New York signed OF Austin Jackson and designated OF Matt den Dekker for assignment. Pirates: RHP Alex McRae was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. RHP Michael Feliz was optioned to Indianapolis. TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: Hurdle did not provide an update on Bell, Marte or Dickerson. He did not say whether Marte or Dickerson could have pinch-hit if the game went to extra innings. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Asdrubal Cabrera is well versed in what can happen at the trade deadline. He found himself on the move four years ago when the Cleveland Indians sent him to Washington to help the Nationals make a playoff push. The second baseman is in the same position again with the floundering New York Mets . While he admits he’s wary of what the days leading up to July 31 could bring, he’s trying not to get worked up. The 32-year-old figures if he just comes to the park and hits the way he did in a 12-6 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday, he’ll be fine. “There’s nothing I can control. Whatever they do, they want to do what’s best for the team,” Cabrera said after going 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. “I hope to stay here. I like New York. I like the team, the town.” Potential playoff teams in need of a bat are taking a long look at Cabrera, who boosted his home run total to 18 when he hit a tiebreaking two-run shot off Nick Kingham (5-5) in the fourth to put the Mets ahead to stay. Cabrera entered hitting just .184 (7 for 38) in his prior 12 games but snapped out by taking out his frustration on Kingham and three relievers. Wilmer Flores also hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs as the struggling Mets posted their highest run total since scoring a dozen times against Colorado on June 18. Amed Rosario and Jose Bautista had two hits each as New York sent the Pirates to their second straight loss following an 11-game winning streak that pushed Pittsburgh back into the postseason picture. Steven Matz (5-8) settled down after giving up two-run homers to David Freese and Josh Harrison in the early innings. Matz tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, walked two and retired his final 10 batters to win for just the third time in his last 11 starts. Matz called himself effectively wild and admitted he started to feel a bit better over his last two innings when his arm tired a bit. All nine of his strikeouts came in the first four innings. He pitched to contact over the last two innings, but only one ball left the infield. “It’s almost like I got a little tired and was able to stay smooth instead of muscle up a little bit and I think it helped me out,” Matz said. Freese and Harrison helped the Pirates dig out of early deficits but the Mets kept piling on. Kingham left after Cabrera’s shot in the fourth put New York ahead 6-4. The rookie allowed six runs and seven hits in three-plus innings, the second time in his last four starts he failed to get an out past the third. Command was an issue too. His four walks were a career high. “It makes everything more difficult,” Kingham said. “The other pitches don’t really come to happen. You don’t have a feel for it. It just kinda snowballs into one bad outing.” TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: C Francisco Cervelli went 0 for 4 and committed an error in his return from concussion-like symptoms that had sidelined hinm since July 14. Cervelli described feeling like he had a “hangover” after getting hit by foul balls or bats in four consecutive games. Though the Cervelli has taken ground balls in practice, there are no plans to put him in a game in the infield anytime soon. “From my perspective, it’s like telling a matador not to fight bulls,” manager Clint Hurdle said. UP NEXT Mets: Jason Vargas (2-6, 8.60 ERA) is expected to come off the DL to start on Friday. Vargas has been out since June 20 with a strained right calf. To make room for Vargas the Mets optioned rookie Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Las Vegas. Pirates: Ivan Nova (6-6, 4.28 ERA) is 4-1 since returning from a stint on the DL with a sprained right ring finger on June 10. He is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in five starts against the Mets. Mets Place Noah Syndergaard On DL With Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — In the latest bizarre medical development for the baffling New York Mets, ace pitcher Noah Syndergaard is headed back to the disabled list after contracting hand-foot-and-mouth disease. The team figures it’s likely Syndergaard caught the contagious virus when he made an appearance at a baseball camp for kids last Thursday during the All-Star break. Mets manager Mickey Callaway said that probably explains why Syndergaard weakened and his velocity decreased during Friday night’s victory at Yankee Stadium. “Hand-foot-and-mouth, are you serious? I guess it’s very uncommon in adults, period,” Callaway said Sunday. “It’s kind of odd. Maybe the first DL stint in Major League Baseball with hand-foot-and-mouth? I don’t know. A record or something.” According to WebMD.com, hand-foot-and-mouth disease is an infectious disease that “most often occurs in children under 10 and is characterized by a rash of small blister-like sores on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and in the mouth. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, and headache.” The disease can spread from one person to another through saliva or fluid from blisters, among other things, and the infection normally passes in a week. The only treatment is a pain reliever such as acetaminophen, according to the website. “It took its toll the other night. He had trouble breathing, and that’s why you saw his velo down,” Callaway said. “During the game, we couldn’t quite figure it out. But I put my hands on his legs to talk to him when he came out, and I felt his legs shaking. He was just weak and run down.” Syndergaard, who missed most of last season with a torn lat muscle, just returned from the disabled list July 13 after being sidelined for more than six weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger. He is 6-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 13 starts this year for the struggling Mets, who began the night last in the NL East. Assistant general manager John Ricco said the pitcher will be placed on the 10-day DL again Monday. Syndergaard stayed home Sunday and Callaway said no other members of the team have shown symptoms of the disease. “It’s not a long-term thing and hopefully he misses one start,” Ricco said. New York initially planned to recall rookie right-hander Corey Oswalt from Triple-A Las Vegas to pitch in Syndergaard’s place Wednesday against his hometown San Diego Padres. But after Sunday night’s scheduled game against the Yankees was postponed by rain, the Mets listed their starters for Tuesday and Wednesday as TBA. The game against the crosstown rival Yankees will be made up in the Bronx on Aug. 13. The news regarding Syndergaard came two days after an alarming health revelation from slugger Yoenis Cespedes, who said he might need surgery on both heels that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery. “I think he probably was a little bit frustrated that it was more painful than he expected. So I can’t speak for why or how he said it, but he did say it and I think we have to take it seriously,” Ricco said. “I don’t think it’s a disconnect,” he added. “It’s not like he’s been saying this for months and we haven’t been listening. For the first time, to our knowledge, when he was considering the surgery was when he said that.” The 32-year-old Cespedes homered Friday night in his return from the DL after missing two months with a strained right hip flexor. He disclosed after the game that calcification on his heels has bothered him for 15 years and caused the lower-body injuries that have limited him to 119 games in 1½ seasons since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract. “They’re all connected,” Ricco said. “So you’ve got to treat the whole problem. We got him to where the legs are strong, but the heel’s an issue. If he can manage the pain, he can play. “Surgery hasn’t been a consideration up until this point, until he really brought it up the other night.” New York initially planned to use Cespedes as the designated hitter Saturday against the Yankees and then start him in the outfield Sunday night, but he was sore Saturday and did not play. He felt better Sunday and offered to be the DH, but the Mets held him out of the lineup again and said he would be monitored throughout the night to see if he might be available off the bench. “It’s something that he’s managed, we’ve managed with him. It’s one of these things, he has good days, bad days with it. It’s a condition that, surgery is definitely kind of a last-resort thing,” Ricco said. “The way you treat this is with various conservative methods, whether they be orthotics, stretching, anti-inflammatories, and that’s kind of how he’s managed those symptoms over the past years. In this case, he was checked out down in Florida a few weeks ago and it was the same diagnosis. The surgery is fairly radical. It’s going to put you out for a while. So it’s not something that you look to do immediately.” Cespedes will be examined by doctors Monday, according to Ricco. “We’re not at odds with him by any stretch. He’s agreeing with every step of the way, the treatment that we’ve given him, to the point where he was anxious to come back, he was feeling good and then he came back and he felt this on Friday,” Ricco said. “I would tell you there’s no disconnect. I spoke to his agent a half-hour ago and we’re all on the same page.” In other news, the Mets recalled reliever Paul Sewald from Las Vegas. NEW YORK (AP) — Yoenis Cespedes homered in his return from the disabled list, Noah Syndergaard won his second straight start since coming back from an injury but left after a drop in velocity, and the New York Mets beat the Yankees 7-5 Friday night in a Subway Series opener. He homered off an again ineffective Domingo German (2-6) to put the Mets ahead 4-0 in the third, sending a 3-0 pitch off the left-field foul pole. Cespedes is 8 for 10 with a pair of homers in his big league career on 3-0 counts. He also singled in the sixth — it would have driven in a run had Brandon Nimmo not been thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple. German was optioned to the minors after the game. He’ll be replaced in the rotation by Luis Cessa. Syndergaard (6-1) returned just before the All-Star break after seven weeks on the disabled list caused by a strained right index finger. He allowed one run and eight hits in five innings, leaving after a velocity drop of about 2 mph in his final inning. Callaway and a trainer came to the mound with one out in the fifth and looked at the finger, and Callaway and pitching coach Dave Eiland had a lengthy discussion with Syndergaard in the dugout after the inning. Callaway said after the game that Syndergaard was a little tired but his finger was fine. Syndergaard has not had a 1-2-3 inning in any of his 10 innings since returning. His four strikeouts increased his total to 501 in 438 2/3 innings, and he bettered Dwight Gooden (445 1/3 innings) as the fastest Mets pitcher to 500 strikeouts. Michael Conforto had three RBIs for the Mets, including an insurance run with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly off A.J. Cole. Every Yankees starter had a hit, and they had a runner on in every inning but went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14. The Yankees dropped 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Boston, their biggest deficit since mid-April. “I expect us to go out and be great,” manager Aaron Boone said before the game. “That’s kind of our expectation when we embarked on this season and that continues to be the expectation. And I think it’s a realistic expectation.” To fulfill their goals, more pitching like is necessary. German gave up four runs, five hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings, dropping to 0-2 in his last five starts. The Mets started 11-1 but entered 39-55, the fewest wins in the National League. Familia and Asdrubal Cabrera are both eligible for free agency and could be dealt. “We have to evaluate where we are as an organization and what we look like going into the offseason, so we know what to expect and what maybe our needs are,” Callaway said before the game. Run-scoring doubles by Cabrera, Conforto and Jose Bautista built a 3-0 lead in the first. Giancarlo Stanton’s sacrifice fly cut the Yankees’ deficit to 4-1 in the third, but Conforto and Devin Mesoraco hit RBI singles for a 6-1 lead in fifth against Adam Warren, who walked the bases loaded. Seth Lugo allowed Neil Walker’s two-run double in the sixth but retired Miguel Andujar on an inning-ending flyout that left the bases loaded in the seventh. Brett Gardner reached when shortstop Amed Rosario missed his one-out grounder in the eighth, and the Yankees closed when Didi Gregorius hit an RBI double and Stanton had a run-scoring groundout. With runners at the corners and two outs, Gsellman struck out Gary Sanchez. The catcher was 1 for 5 in his first game since injuring a groin on June 24 and ran very gingerly. Syndergaard Celebrates Day Before Subway Series With Baseball Camp For Kids

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The second half of the baseball season starts Friday for the Yankees and Mets with part two of their Subway Series at Yankee Stadium, and Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for the Mets. On Thursday, he spent his final day off with some kids at a baseball camp in New Jersey, reports CBS2’s Otis Livingston. The youngsters were full of questions for the star. “Will you have three strikeouts tomorrow?” one little boy asked. “I hope I have a lot more than three,” the pitcher replied. “Will you throw a no-hitter tomorrow?” another boy asked. “I’m gonna try… They’re a good team,” the pitcher replied. But not all the questions were about baseball. Somebody even asked the man nicknamed “Thor” if his long blond locks bother him when he pitches. “It’s worth it, having the hair so,” answered Syndergaard. “How long did it take to grow your hair?” one boy asked. “I’ve been growing it out for the last three years, now I’m just in a maintenance phase,” answered Syndergaard. It’s been a rough season for Syndergaard and the Mets. He was injured since late May until making a successful return last Friday. He and Mets ace Jacob deGrom have been at the center of trade rumors recently, but the fan favorite is hoping he stays put in the Big Apple. “I love New York City,” he said. “I love doing things like this, seeing all the young Mets fans out here and it brings a lot of joy to myself personally. “I’ve embraced New York City and New York has embraced me, and hopefully I can stay a Met for the remainder of my career,” he continued. “But for right now, I really have no say in that. I have zero control over it.” The Citi Noah Syndergaard Baseball Pro Camp works with Tickets For Kids Charities to provide camp scholarships to disadvantaged kids. Thursday’s group consisted of roughly 200 youngsters in grades 1 thru 8 – mostly Met fans, but ironically, it was a Yankees fan that won the homerun hitting contest with Syndergaard pitching. “It feels really good,” said Gavin D’Altrui. “It’s fun to hit off of him, too.” The Subway Series will feature two teams headed in opposite directions: The Yankees near the top of the majors, the Mets closer to the bottom. But after losing two of three on their home field in June, expect the Mets to be geared up for a win in the series.

Jacob DeGrom’s Agent To Mets: Sign Extension Or Trade Ace

WASHINGTON (CBS Sports) — Mets ace Jacob deGrom has obviously been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal 2018 for the Queenslanders. Despite the Mets’ being on pace for 95 losses and a last-place finish (yes, they’re behind the Marlins in the standings) deGrom has positioned himself as an NL Cy Young contender. In his age-30 season, the All-Star deGrom has pitched to an MLB -best 1.68 ERA with a 4.97 K/BB ratio after 19 starts. For his career, he owns a sparkling 140 ERA+ across parts of five big-league seasons. Yes, deGrom has had injury concerns in the past, but it’s all come together this season. His excellence in tandem with the Mets’ awfulness has led to speculation and even reportage that he’ll be traded prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. As well, deGrom isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season, which only adds to his appeal on the market. The Mets themselves have sent mixed signals on this matter, especially since GM Sandy Alderson took a leave of absence to focus on his health. As for deGrom and his representatives, they sound like they’d like the Mets to make a choice. If not, they should trade him for valuable prospects — especially since he’s their most valuable potential trade chip. That the Mets are faced with this choice isn’t exactly breaking news, but it’s notable when an agent and his client directly lay it out in those terms. While the Mets don’t matter in terms of the current standings, what path they take before July 31 will have major impact on the future of the organization. NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Syndergaard pitched out of trouble in a rusty return from the disabled list and helped himself with an RBI single as the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Friday night. Amed Rosario tripled and doubled, both times over Bryce Harper’s head in center field, and the Mets won for only the sixth time in their last 26 home games. Brandon Nimmo had three hits for New York, which built a three-run cushion in the first inning against struggling starter Tanner Roark. They have lost just three of 13 games at Citi Field since the start of last season. After missing seven weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger, Syndergaard (5-1) came out firing 99 mph fastballs. But he gave up seven hits in five innings and never retired the leadoff hitter. Still, the 2016 All-Star held the Nationals to one run while striking out three and walking two. Wilmer Difo made things easier by running into the first out of the third inning at third base, and Syndergaard retired Anthony Rendon and struck out Harper with two on to limit the damage. Difo had doubled to drive in Roark, who opened the inning with the first triple by a Washington pitcher since Joel Hanrahan in 2007. Syndergaard also got Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play with two runners aboard in the fifth. The right-hander was pulled after 75 pitches. ‘Most Valuable Resource:’ Mets Radio Engineer Works More Than 4,000 Games

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. is best known for playing in more than 2,100 straight games. But a member of the New York Mets broadcast team has him beat — working for more than 4,000 straight games. As CBS2’s Steve Overmyer reports, Chris Majkowski’s work day begins like any other. For a quarter century, every Mets radio broadcast has relied on him. “What is it that I do?” he said. “Simply put: Get them on the air, keep them on the air and whatever else happens in between.” He sets up the equipment, researches stats and times out the commercial break. Apart from missing one game to attend his sister’s wedding, Majkowski has been the man behind the broadcasters for every Mets game over the past 25 years. “I probably would be watching the game every night anyway,” he said. “So why not come here, see it live and pick up a couple bucks?” “Every day working with him has been a gift, really,” said Mets radio announcer Howie Rose. “He’s an absolute treat. He’s the most valuable resource we have in the radio booth.” On this night, “Maj” added one more responsibility. He’s throwing out the first pitch. “I don’t wanna be the guy who’s on the SportsCenter’s Not Top 10 for the rest of the year,” he joked. The mound at Citi Field has been the source of catastrophe. Gary “Babba Booey” Dell’Abate hit the umpire, and 50 Cent’s pitch was enough to give anyone anxiety. “If he throws it to the backstop, that doesn’t really concern me,” said Mets TV announcer Gary Cohen. “It’s the three hopper into home plate.” For the better part of his adult life, Majkowski has built up a reputation as a pro’s pro and a true iron man, but it could all be washed away with one bad pitch. Fortunately, he came through like a champ. Over the years, Majkowski has been the backbone of the Mets broadcasts. On this night, he earned his own celebration.

NEW YORK (AP) — Pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning and the New York Mets got another dominant outing from All-Star Jacob deGrom in a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Amed Rosario, who had two of New York’s four hits, began the winning rally with a two-out double off Mark Leiter Jr. (0-1) — the first hit for the Mets since the fourth inning. Jose Reyes walked and Nimmo drove Leiter’s next pitch well over the wall in right-center for his first career walk-off RBIs. It was New York’s third game-ending homer in the last six days. Jose Bautista beat Tampa Bay with a grand slam last Friday, and Wilmer Flores connected Monday in the series opener against Philadelphia to help the Mets earn a four-game split. In his final scheduled start before heading to the All-Star Game next Tuesday in Washington, deGrom scattered five hits and matched his longest outing of the season. He struck out seven and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.68. Still, the right-hander has only five wins on the season. He’s allowed just one earned run over his last 16 innings but has consistently been hurt by a lack of run support from an anemic New York offense all year. NEW YORK (AP) — Enyel De Los Santos won his major league debut and the Philadelphia Phillies got home runs from Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera in a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Franco drove in four runs as the Phillies, who began the day tied with Atlanta atop the NL East, won for the 10th time in 13 games. Nick Williams had three hits and two RBIs, and Rhys Hoskins also got three hits. De Los Santos allowed three runs and five hits over 6 1/3 effective innings. The 22-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he was 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts, and matched against another starter making his big league debut in Drew Gagnon of the Mets. Staked to an early lead and armed with an unorthodox and deceptive slingshot delivery that Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler dubbed a “crossfire,” De Los Santos (1-0) cruised for most of the night against a scuffling Mets lineup that has managed only eight runs over its last five games. De Los Santos walked three and struck out six. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes. Acquired from San Diego in December for shortstop Freddy Galvis, De Los Santos was scheduled to pitch for the International League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday before getting called up. He also was chosen to play for the World Team in Sunday’s All-Star Futures Game. It was the first time a Phillies starter made his debut against another starter in his first outing since Sept. 25, 1944, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Back then, Charlie Ripple faced Charlie Gassaway of the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. Amed Rosario had three hits for the Mets, including two triples to left field. New York has dropped 19 of its last 23 home games. Franco put the Phillies ahead with a three-run homer off Gagnon (0-1) in the second. The third baseman is batting .440 with two homers and seven RBIs over his last eight games. He added an RBI single in the sixth and made several nifty plays on hard-hit grounders. Williams lined a two-run single in the third. Herrera clubbed a solo shot into the Phillies’ bullpen in the fifth for his career-high 16th home run. The 28-year-old Gagnon was charged with six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also hit two batters with pitches. At the plate, Gagnon drove in Rosario with a sacrifice fly — giving his family in attendance something to cheer about. Hoskins, who broke his jaw in late May when he fouled a ball off his mouth, remained in the game after being checked by Kapler and a trainer. NEW YORK (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi took a perfect game into the seventh inning, C.J. Cron hit an early three-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays routed the New York Mets 9-0 on Sunday. Eovaldi retired his first 18 batters before Brandon Nimmo lined a clean single to right field leading off the seventh. Nimmo was quickly erased on a double play, and Eovaldi faced the minimum through seven innings. The right-hander, who returned this season from his second Tommy John surgery, struck out nine and helped himself with an RBI single. Andrew Kittredge pitched the final two innings for the Rays, giving up a single in the ninth before finishing the two-hitter. Joey Wendle and Jake Bauers also homered for Tampa Bay. It was the second time this season Eovaldi (3-3) made it through six innings without allowing a hit. He threw six hitless innings in May against Oakland for a 6-0 Rays win in his first major league start since 2016. Three times this year Eovaldi has gone six or more innings and given up no more than one hit, tied with Pittsburgh’s Trevor Williams for most in the majors. Cron’s home run gave the Rays a 3-0 lead in the first. He connected on a fastball down the middle from Chris Flexen (0-2) and drove it into the second deck in left field. The homer was Cron’s 17th of the season, setting a career high. Flexen, making his first big league start since last September, struggled with command early. He only lasted three innings on a day when the Mets needed length from their starter ahead of a doubleheader Monday. He gave up five earned runs in three innings, walking three and hitting a batter with a pitch. Eovaldi knocked in a run in the fifth when he beat out an infield single to make it 6-0. A day after putting the leadoff hitter on in seven of nine innings, the listless Mets were shut out for the second consecutive game. NEW YORK (AP) — Jose Bautista’s grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the New York Mets to a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. Todd Frazier walked and Devin Mesoraco singled to open the ninth against Chaz Roe (1-2) before Amed Rosario’s sacrifice advanced the runners. Roe then got pinch-hitter Dominic Smith on a comebacker and intentionally walked Brandon Nimmo to load the bases. Bautista homered to left field on the first pitch he saw for his first career walk-off blast. It was his sixth homer of the season and gave the Mets their third win in their last 18 games at home. Tampa Bay had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth against New York closer Jeurys Familia (4-4) but came up short. After Familia hit Daniel Robertson with a pitch to load the bases, first baseman Wilmer Flores got pinch-runner Hunter Wood out at home despite his high throw. Umpires confirmed the call after Tampa Bay challenged. Familia then struck out Willy Adames to end the threat. Jacob deGrom was once again stellar for the Mets, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out eight and issuing one walk over eight innings. Asdrubal Cabrera gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI single. DeGrom, who has an 1.80 ERA in his nine starts at Citi Field this season, made his lone mistake of the night when he gave up a tying solo homer to Adames, his third of the season, in the fifth. AN EYE FOR INTERNATIONAL TALENT New York announced Friday the official signings of their top two targets once the international free agent period for 2018-19 opened July 2, awarding a franchise-record $2.7 million signing bonus to 16-year-old Francisco Alvarez from Venezuela. Alvarez was ranked No. 9 on Baseball America’s prospect list, and 13th on the MLB Pipeline list. Freddy Valdez, a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic, was awarded a $1.45 million bonus. Baseball America had him as the 29th best prospect, MLB Pipeline ranked him at No. 25. FRESH FACES Tampa signed Shane McClanahan, their 31st overall pick in the 2018 June Draft, on Friday, hours before the official 5 p.m. deadline for teams to sign all of their selections. McClanahan, a 21-year-old lefty from the University of South Florida, will be assigned to the Gulf Coast League Rays. He wasn’t too shabby to open his last collegiate season, and pitching 31.2 innings scoreless innings. LHP Matthew Liberatore, the Rays’ other first-round pick, selected 16th overall, made his debut with the GCL Rays on Friday. He allowed one earned run, one hit, and two walks with one strikeout and a hit batter in 1 2/3 innings, picking up the loss. TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: RHP Chris Archer will return to the rotation and start Monday against Detroit. The ace has been on the disabled list June 5 due to a left abdominal strain. Archer is 3-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 13 starts this season. Mets: Mets manager Mickey Callaway said that it would be “ideal” for RHP Noah Syndergaard to start June vs against Washington if all goes well with his rehab start Sunday at Single-A Brooklyn. MOVES Rays: Tampa Bay recalled LHP Adam Kolarek from Triple-A Durham and designated OF Jerry Hazelbaker for assignment.
