LONDON, England (AP) — British police say doctors have delivered a baby boy whose pregnant mother was shot dead with a crossbow at her home in London.The Metropolitan Police force says 35-year-old Devi Unmathallegadoo was wounded in the abdomen during the attack on Monday. She died in a local hospital, where medics delivered her son.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A gun scare caused chaos Saturday at a subway station in Brooklyn. Police swept the Bedford Avenue station in Williamsburg around 1:20 p.m. and said they found no evidence of shots fired or a gun. A woman on an L train approaching the station reportedly said passengers in her car started running toward her yelling that someone had a gun. Another woman said her husband had to run from one end of the train to the other with their 3-year-old while everyone was screaming. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority acknowledged the “frightening situation” in a tweet and said lost items can be picked up at the station or a Penn Station lost and found. To follow up, NYPD arrived on the scene. There was no gunman found and no reports of any shots fired. We know that may have been a frightening situation but we are committed to the safety of our customers at all times. Gun Scare Prompts Chaotic Scene On L Train In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — To the displeasure of straphangers across all five boroughs, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday announced plans to increase fares twice over the next three years. Riders who’ve had it with bad service say they’re not happy about the Wednesday bombshell. “As we stated in November and February, the MTA requires new revenue for operations and for capital,” MTA Chief Financial Officer Robert Foran said. Translation? Despite the delays, the breakdowns, and the frustrations, fares are going up for subways, commuter lines, and buses. Riders across the board weren’t happy about it. “I think it’s absurd,” one straphanger told CBS2. “It’s not like we’re seeing an improvement in service.” “As a student I think it’s really challenging,” one woman said. The MTA announced it will raise fares by four percent in both 2019 and 2021. As for specific details, those may take a while. “Those are forecasted, they’re still subjected to our needs,” Foran said. “They’re subject to our public hearings and subject to board action. We’ve increased saving targets, we just have to cut more cost.” But what about the delays, or the constantly crammed subway cars, and the so-called “incidents” that could make you hours late for work? The MTA says they’re working on it. “The figure I plugged in is not particularly scientific at the moment,” Transit Authority President Andy Byford said. “I just said at the moment we’re around 70,000 delay incidents a month and that’s far too high.” In response, Byford says he’s proposed a target of 10,000 “incidents” by the end of 2018. The one thing the MTA has been consistent with all along is fare hikes. The newest round of raises will bring the total number to seven since 2009, part of the plan to raise fares every two years as part of a financial rescue. Riders say they’re just not buying it. “The fares increase, but the service just stays the same or gets worse,” one man said. MTA Chair Joe Lhota says the state of emergency remains in place, along with the subway action plan.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A new state audit has found the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York has lost millions in unpaid tolls. The audit released by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli blames cashless tolling for at least $1.6 million in unpaid tolls since January 2017. The report finds most of the money was lost when 8 of the MTA’s bridges and tunnels went cashless. On Thursday afternoon, lawmakers will hold a news conference at Nyack Memorial Park to demand the authority cancel its $72 million 3-year contract extension with the company, Conduent. The audit cites a variety of reasons for the unbilled tolls, including license plate images that couldn’t be processed and out-of-state drivers with temporary license plates. DiNapoli also says the agency needs to do a better job of collecting that money that is owed. MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Cedrick Fulton says he “takes exception” to several statements in the audit. The MTA says unbilled transactions account for less than 1 percent of tolls collected. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A daredevil straphanger’s dangerous expedition underground was caught on camera. Cell phone video shows a man hanging onto the outside of a subway car as it traveled through a pitch black tunnel. The man who took the video says the rider couldn’t get in the train, so he got onto the train — literally. You can see the man holding on outside of the train’s doors, even letting one arm down as it passes through the tunnel. After a little over a minute, the man jumps off at the next stop. Matt Beary filmed the ordeal around 8:30 a.m. Friday on the C train. He says the man subway surfed from the Clinton-Washington station to Lafayette Avenue. “The woman next to me had her hand over her mouth in shock,” he said. Straphangers who saw the video were stunned. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it’s illegal, and warns riders in posters that “surfing” is deadly. In fact, the agency says between 1989 and 2011, 13 people were killed hanging off a train. 56 more were injured. The NYPD says it’s investigating the incident and reminds everyone that trying to do something similar could land you in jail.
