NEW YORK (AP) — AMC host Chris Hardwick is returning to work after a review of sexual assault allegations against him by a former girlfriend. The network says returning Hardwick to work at “Talking Dead” and “Talking with Chris Hardwick” is the “appropriate step” after a review that included interviews with numerous people. It says Hardwick will return to “Talking Dead” Aug. 12. Substitute host Yvette Nicole Brown will be interim guest host of “The Walking Dead Season 9 Preview Special” on Aug. 5, and a guest on “Talking Dead” on Aug. 12. Hardwick has acknowledged that an online post by his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra alleging she had been sexually assaulted and emotionally abused referred to him. Manzanar Detainee Who Revealed Reason For WW2 Internment Dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga, who uncovered proof thousands of Japanese-Americans incarcerated in the United States during World War II were held not for reasons of national security but because of racism, has died. Bruce Embrey, co-chair of the Manzanar Committee, said Wednesday that Herzig-Yoshinaga died July 18 at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance. She was 93. Her discovery of a 1942 document in the National Archives revealed that approximately 120,000 Japanese-Americans weren’t sent to camps around the country for national security concerns. The real reason, according to the document, was because Japanese cultural ties led authorities to believe it was not possible to tell spies from law-abiding citizens. The revelation led to a 1988 executive order from President Ronald Reagan offering apologies and $20,000 payments to each of those incarcerated. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trevor Plouffe hit a three-run homer off outfielder Kike Hernandez with one out in the 16th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 Tuesday night in a game that lasted nearly six hours. After using eight pitchers, the Dodgers turned to Hernandez (0-1) in the 16th. He got Nick Williams to fly out, then walked Jesmuel Valentin and Jorge Alfaro before Plouffe hit an opposite-field shot for his first homer of the season and second career walkoff, ending the game after 5:55. Eight Phillies relievers combined to allow one run and six hits over 11 impressive innings, with Vince Velasquez (7-8) pitching the top of the 16th. Velasquez, who tossed seven scoreless innings in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader win against San Diego, made his first relief appearance since 2015. At Least 11 Dead, 5 Missing After Missouri Tour Boat Capsizes

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — A tourist boat apparently capsized on a lake Thursday night in Missouri, leaving at least 11 people dead and several others hospitalized, a sheriff said. At least five people were reported missing. The Springfield News-Leader reported that Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said a Ride the Ducks tourist boat reportedly sank on Table Rock Lake with more than 30 people on board. He said weather was believed to have caused the boat to capsize. High winds had hit the area, according to weather reports. He said an off-duty sheriff’s deputy working security helped rescue people and that recovery efforts were ongoing, with some passengers still accounted for. A dive team was assisting. National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Linderberg said a top wind speed of 63 mph was measured around 7 p.m. Thursday at Branson Airport. Passenger Killed In Small Plane Crash Near Lake Tahoe Was WeHo Man

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The passenger who died in a small airplane crash that also killed the pilot near Lake Tahoe earlier this week has been identified as a 55-year-old West Hollywood resident. The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday an autopsy determined Peter Jackson died from multiple blunt force injuries in the crash south of Truckee, California. The 60-year-old pilot, Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael, California, reported engine trouble shortly after takeoff on Tuesday and was trying to make it back to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport when the plane went down. Jackson and another male passenger who hasn’t been identified were flown to a Reno hospital with critical injuries. Jackson died later that day. The three men were the only ones on board the plane. North Carolina Woman Denied ‘LSBNSNLV’ License Plate To Honor Wife

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP/CBS Local) – A woman says her request for a specialty license plate to honor her wife has been denied by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Amy Bright told WFMY-TV in Greensboro she wanted a plate reading “LSBNSNLV,” for “lesbians in love.” The DMV issued a statement saying the agency has the right to deny any license plate it deems “offensive to good taste and decency.” The Greenville woman said it’s ridiculous she can’t celebrate her wife this way. Bright notes her request has no curse words or hate speech. She said she previously had a plate reading “OUTLSBN,” for “out lesbian.” She is appealing and says she’ll sue if the appeal is denied. Woman With $92K In Unpaid Pa. Turnpike Tolls And Fees Gets Probation

(AP/CBS Local) – A woman who racked up more than $92,000 in unpaid tolls and fees for evading hundreds of tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike during a five-year period has pleaded guilty to theft of services. Lori Yearick entered her plea Tuesday. The 45-year-old Mount Joy woman was then sentenced to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service. Prosecutors say Yearick failed to pay turnpike tolls on 1,645 trips between January 2012 and March 2017. SALEM, Ind. (AP) — State Police say a southern Indiana man accidentally shot and killed his 6-year-old daughter while cleaning a handgun. They say Makayla S. Bowling of rural Salem was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police say her father was cleaning the gun inside a home Friday night and thought the weapon was unloaded, but it discharged, striking the girl in the head. The father’s name hasn’t been released. Small Plane Lands On NJ Beach After Developing Engine Problems

KEANSBURG, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a small plane made an emergency landing on a New Jersey shore beach after the pilot reported an engine-related problem. The Federal Aviation Administration says single-engine Cessna 172 plane touched down in Keansburg around 10:25 a.m. Friday. Two people were aboard the aircraft, and it wasn’t immediately clear if either person was injured. Their names were not released. It did not appear that anyone was on the beach at the time the plane landed. No injuries on the ground were reported. The cause of the plane’s engine problems remain under investigation. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A grandmother who spent 11 years in prison for killing her grandson has been released after her lawyers provided evidence that the boy might have died from an accidental fall. Loyola Law School attorneys said Wednesday that Maria Mendez was released from prison late last month after pleading no contest to manslaughter and child abuse for the 2006 death of her 9-month-old grandson. Mendez served 11 years of a 25-year sentence. Under a deal with Los Angeles County prosecutors, she was resentenced to time served. During trial, county medical experts testified the boy’s traumatic brain injuries were caused by abuse. But Mendez’s lawyers last month presented CT scans and autopsy photos indicating the injuries could have been caused by an earlier fall.
