Masahiro Tanaka Punches Out 9 In 3-Hit Complete Game Shutout Over Tampa

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka pitched a three-hitter, Austin Romine drove in two runs as the replacement for again-injured catcher Gary Sanchez and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-0 on Tuesday night. Tanaka (8-2) retired his first 12 batters before C.J. Cron singled leading off the fifth. He struck out nine and walked one, improving to 6-0 on the road. It was the sixth major league complete game and third shutout for Tanaka, his first complete game since a three-hit shutout at Boston on April 27 last year. Tanaka walked Ji-Man Choi after Cron’s fifth-inning hit but escaped damage by striking out Daniel Robertson and getting speedy Mallex Smith to hit into a 3-6-1 double play. Romine hit a run-scoring groundout in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly during the seventh. Sanchez was put back on the 10-day disabled list before the game because of a strained right groin, a day after failing to hustle on a pair of key plays in a 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay. Sanchez missed 20 games from June 25 to July 19 because of the groin injury. New York is just 14-13 in its last 27 games, a stretch that began Tampa Bay took a three-game series from New York June 22-24. Yankees second baseman Brandon Drury left in fifth with a bruised left hand. He was hit by a Chirinos pitch, initially stayed in the game but departed after advancing to third on Neil Walker’s single. The Yankees said X-rays were negative. Yonny Chirinos (0-2), recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill-in for injured AL All-Star Blake Snell, allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Snell has left shoulder fatigue, and the Rays hope he will miss just one start. New York got RBI singles from Didi Gregorius in the first and Walker in the ninth. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: 2B Gleyber Torres (right hip strain) went 0 for 2 with a walk during a five-inning stint as the DH in his third game with Class A Tampa and is expected to be activated from the 10-day DL Wednesday. . CF Aaron Hicks got the day off after getting banged up sliding into second base Monday. Rays: C Wilson Ramos (left hamstring strain) could be back in early August. . Reliever Jonny Venters (right hamstring strain) allowed two hits, a walk and struck out three over a scoreless inning for Class A Charlotte in what may have been his final rehab outing. LET’S MAKE A DEAL Rays manager Kevin Cash expects moves ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. “I would say in all honestly we’re going to be very active,” Cash said. “I know there’s teams calling non-stop.” Starting pitchers Chris Archer and Nathan Eovaldi, closer Sergio Romo, SS Adeiny Hechavarria and Ramos have all been scouted by playoff contenders. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Gary Sanchez failed to hustle on a pair of key plays, Jake Bauers hit a three-run homer and scored with some nifty baserunning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Luis Severino and the New York Yankees 7-6 on Monday night. The Yankees loaded the bases against Jose Alvarado with one out in the ninth when Brett Gardner singled, Aaron Judge walked and Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked. After Aaron Hicks hit into a force out at the plate, Alvarado got his first save when Sanchez grounded out, a play where Hicks beat the play at second but the Yankees catcher was thrown out at first after jogging most of the way there. Hicks limped off the field after his slide. Bauers made it 4-1 on his sixth homer in the fifth. Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bauers had a two-out double and aggressively scored from second on Sanchez’s 10th passed ball. Sanchez and Severino got their signs crossed up, leading to the passed ball. Sanchez slowly chased the ball as it bounced away in foul territory, giving Bauers time to score from second base. Severino (14-3) allowed a season-high seven runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings. The 24-year-old righty struck out eight to reach 504 for his career, joining Al Downing (644) and Lefty Gomez (511) as the only Yankees’ pitchers to reach 500 strikeouts with the club before turning 25. New York has gone 13-13 over its last 26 games, a stretch that started when Tampa Bay had a three-game sweep over the Yankees June 22-24. Daniel Robertson, who had a pinch-hit walk-off grand slam in Sunday’s 6-4 win over Miami, got his third hit with a solo homer in a three-run sixth that extended Tampa Bay’s advantage to 7-3. New York pulled within 4-3 in the sixth when Stanton crossed the plate on Jesus Sucre’s passed ball and an RBI single by Sanchez. Stanton had a two-run single in a three-run seventh that cut the Yankees’ deficit to 7-6. He went 4 for 4, and has 15 hits in last 31 at-bats. In his previous game at Tropicana Field June 24, Stanton had five hits in five at-bats. In the ninth, Didi Gregorius sacrifice bunted with Gardner and Judge aboard, setting up Stanton’s intentional walk. Manager Aaron Boone said he was concerned about the lefty-lefty matchup with Gregorius facing Alvarado, even knowing the bunt would likely take the bat from Stanton’s hands. The Yankees tied it at 1 during the second when Stanton hit a towering fly that center fielder Kevin Kiermaier appeared to lose in the ceiling and went for a double. Stanton scored on Miguel Andujar’s single. Matt Andriese (3-4), the second of seven pitchers in the Rays’ bullpen day, allowed two unearned runs in 3 2/3 innings. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: 2B Gleyber Torres (right hip strain) made two errors over nine defensive innings, and had two hits in four at-bats during his second game with Class A Tampa. Smoak, Solarte Lead Blue Jays To Win Over Yankees

TORONTO (AP) — Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer, Yangervis Solarte reached base four times and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Friday night. Smoak connected in Toronto’s five-run second inning, when the Blue Jays batted around and put an early end to struggling right-hander Sonny Gray’s latest outing. Solarte went 3 for 4 with a walk as the Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 16 home games. Aaron Hicks homered and had two RBIs in the opener of New York’s 11-game road trip. Gray (5-7) allowed five runs and six hits in two innings, his shortest start of the season and his third straight loss. Gray lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his previous start, matching a season worst by allowing six runs in an 11-0 loss to the division-leading Boston Red Sox. Gray retired the first two batters he faced Friday before loading the bases with two walks and a single. He escaped unscathed when Russell Martin struck out swinging. Things went downhill for Gray in the second, which began with Randal Grichuk’s double. One out later, Devon Travis and Curtis Granderson hit back-to-back RBI singles. Smoak capped the inning with a two-out homer, his 12th. Hicks hit a solo home run in the third, his career-high 16th, then chased Blue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Joe Biagini came on and struck out Giancarlo Stanton looking, then got Didi Gregorius to fly out. Gaviglio allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Gaviglio is winless in seven starts, dating to a May 25 victory at Philadelphia. Biagni (1-5) pitched 1 2/3 innings for his first win of 2018.
