Dodgers Topple The Braves, 5-1

ATLANTA (AP) — Yasiel Puig homered and drove in three runs following his return from the disabled list, Alex Wood pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to win his sixth straight decision and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the struggling Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Saturday night. Reinstated after missing 15 games with a right oblique strain, Puig made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second off Max Fried and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the sixth with his 12th homer , a towering shot off Luke Jackson that bounced off the third-level scoreboard facade in left field. Wood (7-5) allowed one hit and four walks with five strikeouts. His performance followed Rich Hill’s seven scoreless innings Thursday and Clayton Kershaw’s one run allowed in 7 2/3 innings Friday against an Atlanta offense that led the NL for most of the first half of the season. The Braves, second in the NL East, have lost four straight and 13 of 18 mostly because their bats have been quieted. They’ve averaged 2.2 runs over their last 13 defeats and have dropped to fifth in NL runs scored. Johan Camargo accounted for Atlanta’s offense with a homer off Caleb Ferguson in the seventh. Puig hit the Dodgers’ 143rd homer, tops in the NL for the West Division leaders. Wood stranded a runner in scoring position in the first and second as he improved to 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his last seven starts since he lost at home to the Braves on June 9. He didn’t get a chance to face Tyler Flowers with two runners on in the sixth. Flowers began the game with seven hits and eight RBIs in 11 career at-bats against Wood, so Dodgers manager Dave Roberts brought in J.T. Chargois. Flowers struck out. Los Angeles led 1-0 in the second when Enrique Hernandez singled and scored on Puig’s sacrifice fly. They went up 5-1 in the ninth on RBI singles by Chris Taylor and Manny Machado. Fried (1-4) allowed one run, two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. He was reinstated from the disabled list after missing 14 games with a left middle finger blister. TRAINER’S ROOM Braves manager Brian Snitker said 2B Ozzie Albies was held out of the lineup on a scheduled night off to rest his right hamstring. Injured last week at Washington, Albies missed four games. He returned Thursday and went 1-for-8 with four strikeouts over the next two games. He singled as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, and Snitker plans to have him back in the lineup Sunday. The 21-year-old Albies, an All-Star in his first full seasons in the majors, is one of two NL players with 20 homers and 10 stolen bases. TRANSACTIONS The Dodgers optioned OF Alex Verdugo to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Puig on the roster. … The Braves optioned OF Preston Tucker to Triple-A Gwinnett to make room for Fried. UP NEXT Dodgers: RHP Ross Stripling (8-2, 2.43 ERA) allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of his last start, a no-decision that the Dodgers won last Monday at Philadelphia. Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb (9-5, 3.41 ERA) gave up one run and four hits in six innings of his last start, a victory last Monday at Miami. MILWAUKEE (AP) — — Christian Yelich hit a tying homer off Clayton Kershaw in a three-run sixth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 4-2 win Saturday night over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brewers reliever Josh Hader struck out four in two scoreless innings during his first appearance since Hader’s racist and homophobic tweets surfaced during the All-Star Game. Hader, who has apologized for the years-old social media messages, received an ovation from the crowd after he was introduced, with many fans at Miller Park standing. Hader’s work highlighted five scoreless innings from the Milwaukee bullpen, though closer Corey Knebel provided a couple of nervous moments in the ninth. Knebel allowed a two-out single to Logan Forsythe, bringing up the potential tying run in slugger Manny Machado. Just the kind of big spot made for Machado, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles during the All-Star break. But Machado bounced out harmlessly to third to end the game, and Knebel got his 12th save. The Brewers’ bats caught up to Kershaw in the sixth, when Yelich led off with a first-pitch homer for a 2-all tie. Another run scored on an error, and Keon Broxton added an RBI triple. Kershaw (3-5) allowed seven hits and four runs in six innings, though only one was earned. He struck out five in taking his first loss since April 25, a span of eight starts. Milwaukee rookie Corbin Burnes (1-0) picked up his first major league win with two scoreless innings, bailing starter Chase Anderson out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the fifth. Kershaw was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch before Burnes struck out All-Star Matt Kemp and got cleanup hitter Max Muncy to fly out. Chris Taylor drove in the Dodgers’ two runs with a bases-loaded single in the first. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: OF Yasiel Puig took about 30 swings off a tee at the team’s training complex in Arizona on Friday. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Manny Machado singled twice and walked twice in his debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who used a tiebreaking RBI single by Chris Taylor to beat the sliding Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 on Friday night. NL West-leading Los Angeles was held in check by Wade Miley before going ahead to stay in the seventh. Moments after Yasmani Grandal was cut down at the plate on a nice pickup by catcher Manny Pina, Taylor singled in Chase Utley to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Machado’s second hit then set up Max Muncy’s run-scoring double off Taylor Williams (0-3). Enrique Hernandez added a three-run homer in the ninth as Los Angeles celebrated the trade for Machado with its fifth win in six games. Rich Hill (3-4) struck out nine in six innings, and Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 28th save. Milwaukee returned from the break to an emotional apology from reliever Josh Hader for years-old racist and homophobic tweets that surfaced during the All-Star Game. Miley tossed six effective innings in his 200th career start and Jesus Aguilar hit his NL-best 25th homer in the eighth, but the Brewers dropped their seventh straight game. Christian Yelich hit a two-run triple in the ninth, but Jansen struck out Aguilar swinging for the final out. With his teammates standing behind him during a news conference, the 24-year-old Hader said the tweets — which included a slur used to disparage African-Americans — “were never my beliefs. I was young. I was saying stuff out of just ignorance and that’s just not what I meant.” Hader is going to participate in diversity and inclusion initiatives in addition to sensitivity training, according to Major League Baseball. The hard-throwing lefty did not get into the game against Los Angeles. Machado joined the Dodgers after he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with Baltimore on Wednesday. The Brewers also were in the mix for the All-Star slugger, but the Dodgers reeled him in with a package of five prospects headed by slugger Yusniel Diaz. Machado started at shortstop and batted second, but manager Dave Roberts said he might play third at some point and he could try him in the third slot in the lineup as well. He grounded a single into right field in his first at-bat. He also walked in the third and fifth, and flied out to right in the ninth. Machado’s walk in the third helped load the bases with one out, and Taylor scampered home on a passed ball for Pina. But Matt Kemp then bounced into an unusual 1-3-4 double play, with Aguilar catching Muncy trying to scramble back to the bag at second. Milwaukee also hurt itself on the bases. Keon Broxton was caught off second on Miley’s base hit in the fifth, and Miley was thrown out at home when he tried to score from first on Yelich’s tying RBI double. DOWN ON THE FARM Los Angeles optioned outfielder Andrew Toles to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Machado on the roster. Right-hander Walker Buehler was slated to throw a five-inning simulated game with the Dodgers’ top minor league affiliate, according to Roberts. Buehler could rejoin the major league club next week. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: INF Justin Turner was held out with an adductor injury. “I would say a little bit more on the hope that he can start tomorrow,” Roberts said. “Expectation is a little bit, just a little bit under that.” Brewers: Pina was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list. WASHINGTON (CBS SPORTS) — Trade buzz surrounding Orioles infielder Manny Machado is at an all-time high right now, and according to multiple reports he’s likely to be dealt before play resumes coming out of the All-Star break. Indeed, Baltimore may already have a deal in place with the Dodgers: Can report with more certainty: Machado to #Dodgers happening. Among remaining questions, in addition to specifics of return beyond OF Yusniel Diaz: How much money, if any, #Orioles will send #Dodgers to secure a better package and help ease LAD’s luxury-tax concerns. — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 18, 2018 It’s also worth noting that CBS Sports HQ baseball insider Jim Bowden reported that Machado is not expected to be a member of the O’s once their season resumes after the All-Star break and that he’ll be dealt to a National League team. Bear in mind that the Orioles have a somewhat complicated recent history when it comes to signing off on players’ medicals, so some hurdles may remain. As for those tax concerns that Rosenthal notes, the Dodgers conducted their entire offseason with the goal of resetting their competitive balance tax status and thus not paying those penalties. Given that Machado is owed the balance of a $16 million salary for 2018 and given that the Dodgers are right up against the tax threshold, they’ll need some cash from Baltimore or to send a pricey contract the other way. That, in turn, means the Orioles can ask for more on the prospect front. Machado makes sense given that the Dodgers lost franchise shortstop Corey Seager to Tommy John surgery, and that in tandem with the lack of production at second base has left them thin in the infield. Adding Machado and installing him at short would allow the Dodgers to shift Chris Taylor from short to second base and thus plug that hole. As for Machado’s merits, he’s in the midst of a career year. At the break, he’s batting .315/.387/.575 (164 OPS+) with 24 home runs in 96 games. He’s also returned to his original position of shortstop this season. While returns are mixed on his fielding at that premium spot, he has proved capable of manning it on a daily basis (notable given his past knee injuries). Machado is also a pending free agent, and by all accounts he’s determined to test the market. Given that the Dodgers have Seager and Justin Turner installed at short and third, respectively, they can sensibly take Machado on as a temporary fix. Rosenthal spoke to Machado about the rumors during Tuesday night’s All-Star Game at Nationals Park. Here’s what he said on what may be his last day as an Oriole: “I just try not to think about it, to be honest. I try to enjoy this moment with the American League guys and just enjoy this with these guys that I’ve played with for a long time. “It’s been a tremendous honor to wear this uniform. They gave me an opportunity to come up and play in the big leagues — that’s everyone’s dream. They gave me that. They gave me the opportunity to play shortstop again. The organization has done everything, so if this is the last time, hopefully I treated them well and did everything I could for this organization. “I’m just trying to enjoy this off day tomorrow. I mean, I don’t know if I’m going to get a call or not, but I’m just trying to enjoy this last off day. As of now, I haven’t heard of anything.” The SportsLine Projection Model was already high on the Dodgers for the rest of the season and has them as the leader in World Series probability in the National League. The forecast gives the Dodgers a bit of a boost, going from 94.1 wins without Machado to 94.6 with the addition of the Orioles infielder. Postseason odds go from 94.7 to 96.5 percent. As far as winning the World Series? Machado would raise the Dodgers’ chances from 23.7 to 24 percent. No, that’s not a huge difference, which reflects two facts: we’re well past the midpoint of the season, and SportsLine was already quite bullish on the Dodgers moving forward. — Dayn Perry, CBS Sports Writer

The Baseball Report: All-Star Rosters Announced, Machado Trade Talks Heat Up

Ryan Mayer The Midsummer Classic is set for next Tuesday, July 17th in Washington D.C. at the home park of the Washington Nationals. With just over a week before the teams take the field, Major League Baseball announced the results of the voting for both league’s All-Star teams, as well as the starting line-ups for each. There’s still a chance for players to make the teams, as fans can participate in the “Final Vote” on MLB.com all week, with five players given as options for each league. Outside of that final roster spot, there will likely be changes, with players being replaced due to injuries, but for now, here’s what each team looks like . The starters are as follows: American League: C Wilson Ramos, 1B Jose Abreu, 2B Jose Altuve, 3B Jose Ramirez, SS Manny Machado, OF Mookie Betts, OF Mike Trout, OF Aaron Judge, DH J.D. Martinez National League: C Willson Contreras, 1B Freddie Freeman, 2B Javier Baez, 3B Nolan Arenado, SS Brandon Crawford, OF Nick Markakis, OF Matt Kemp, OF Bryce Harper The newest name to the All-Star experience is outfielder Nick Markakis. Markakis has been in the league for 13 seasons now (nine with Baltimore, four in Atlanta) but had never been selected to an All-Star team. This season, with the Braves, it would be hard to argue for his exclusion considering he’s hitting .322/.389/.490 with 10 homers and 59 RBI in 89 games. The most notable snubs? Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell and Seattle Mariners ace James Paxton. Snell has posted a 12-4 record with a 2.09 ERA across 19 starts in the first half for the Rays, while Paxton is 8-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 19 starts of his own. While the All-Star roster reveal has gotten most of the spotlight in the past day, rumblings out of Baltimore about a potential Manny Machado trade have been building since late last week. According to multiple reports, seven teams have made offers to the Orioles for the 26-year-old shortstop. The consensus in terms of the appeal of those trade offers seems to be: Dodgers, Brewers, Diamondbacks, Phillies, Braves, Indians and Cubs. The Dodgers and Brewers are the perceived frontrunners in the race to secure Machado’s services for the second half of the season. Machado has been a third baseman for much of his career before moving to shortstop with the O’s this season. Entering play on Monday, he’s hitting .313/.382/.560 with 21 homers and 60 RBI in 88 games. His contract is up at season’s end, meaning any team that acquires him will only have half a season to try and convince him to stay, otherwise he will hit the free-agent market this winter.
