Dodgers To Honor Andre Ethier At Retirement Ceremony Next Month

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA)  —  The Dodgers announced Wednesday that the team will honor Andre Ethier next month with a pre-game retirement ceremony on Friday, August 3. Ethier’s 12-year Dodger career will be honored prior to the 7:10 p.m. game against the Houston Astros, the team said. Actor Jason Bateman will emcee the event. There will be tributes from teammates past and present. Fans are encouraged to arrive early. “I look forward to coming back to Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium, places I’m so lucky to have called home for the last 12 years,” said Ethier. “There’s nothing like stepping out on the field at Dodger Stadium and looking up and seeing the faithful Dodger Blue supporting you, and I’m grateful for the reception and support I received in all my years playing there. I’m humbled by this evening and look forward to sharing it all with you.” Ethier, 36, played all 12 of his Major League seasons with Los Angeles and helped lead the Dodgers to seven division titles and eight postseason appearances from 2006-17. He batted .285 with 303 doubles, 162 home runs and 687 RBI in 1,455 games, earning two All-Star selections (2010, ’11), a 2009 Silver Slugger Award and a 2011 Gold Glove. During the course of his career, Ethier earned a reputation for coming through in the clutch and finished his career with 14 walk-off RBI, the second most in Los Angeles history (Dusty Baker, 16), while posting career marks of .282 with runners in scoring position and .315 with the bases loaded. Fittingly, his last Major League at-bat resulted in a clutch hit – a pinch-hit RBI single in Game 7 of the World Series against the Astros. (credit: Stephen Dunn/Getty Images) Ethier is among the LA club’s career leaders in games (1,455, 7th), hits (1,367, 7th), extra-base hits (499, 4th), doubles (303, 3rd), homers (162, T-8th) and RBI (687, 6th). He holds the Los Angeles record for hit by pitches (58) and also consecutive hits, stringing together a hit in 10 consecutive at-bats from Aug. 22-25 which tied Edward Konetchy’s franchise record set in 1919. His 30-game hitting streak from April 2-May 6, 2011 remains the second longest in franchise history behind only Willie Davis’ 31-game run in 1969. The ever-popular Dodger was originally selected by the Athletics in the 2nd round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University and acquired by the Dodgers in a December 2005 trade in exchange for Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez. In addition to his contributions on the field, Ethier was passionate about his impact off the field and provided support to under served communities, including donations of $375,000 to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation during his time with the club. These funds were used to revitalize and rename the Union Rescue Mission Learning Center, now The Maggie and Andre Ethier Learning Center, which provides classes to homeless men and women in Los Angeles. Rob Tringali/Getty Images The clubs said Ethier also supports four-year scholarships for three current Jackie Robinson Foundation/Ethier Family Scholars attending college at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. In addition to the generous monetary support, Ethier partnered with LADF on Dre Dayz, a program that afforded over 700 youth from 24 different organizations supported by LADF, a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch batting practice from the field and enjoy the game in a premium suite. Cardinals’ Rookie Daniel Poncedeleon Dazzles In Major League Debut 14 Months After Lifesaving Head Surgery

CINCINNATI (CBSNewYork/AP) — Monday was a night to remember for one Saint Louis pitcher. Cardinals righty Daniel Poncedeleon made his Major League debut just 14 months following lifesaving brain surgery after being hit in the head with a comeback line drive. The rookie hurled seven no-hit innings against the Cincinnati Reds. He was taken out of the game by interim-manager Mike Shildt, a decision Poncedeleon says he supports. “There’s a little bit inside me that wanted to stay in the game but I fully understand the situation,” the 26-year-old prospect said. “I was 116 pitches in, my at bat was up and I’m not very good at the plate so I couldn’t have helped us there.” After all was said and done, the Reds wound up topping the Cards thanks to a rally sparked by third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Before the game, Poncedeleon prayed for calmness before his debut, went to the bullpen to warm up and hurt his neck on one pitch. “I tweaked my neck in the bullpen and had a hard time looking toward home plate,” he said. “I was a little nervous then.” The neck was fine once the game began. Poncedeleon joined the Dodgers’ Ross Stripling as the only major leaguers to throw at least seven no-hit innings in their debuts since 1908. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. Gov. Cuomo Unveils ‘Justice For Junior’ Anti-Gang Initiatives

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) —  Gov. Andrew Cuomo is going toe-to-toe with the Trinitarios and other Bronx gangs to keep them from recruiting new members. “The gangs win when a void is created. The gangs win when the young person feels no support, no option, no opportunity,” Cuomo said Thursday. “We have to fill the void before the gang gets there.” Three weeks after 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz was stabbed to death by suspected gang members in what police are calling a case of mistaken identity, the governor announced a $19 million package of anti-gang programs designed to give kids so much to do they won’t be tempted to join a gang. “Terrible, horrendous act,” the governor said. “What should we do? Do something, do something positive, not just words, not just ‘you’re in my thoughts and prayers’ – do something.” The new #JusticeForJunior program: * Targets boys and girls 6-19 * Offers free programs, including sports, arts, computer labs and game rooms * Establishes summer camp programs * Provides funds to renovate Roberto Clemente State Park * Expands state police anti-gang operations * Eupports organizations that stops gangs from recruiting in schools Cuomo’s initiatives got a big boost from Guzman-Feliz’s father, who had just come from the cemetery where he visited his son’s grave. “It’s good news for me and for other people,” he told CBS2’s Political Reporter Marcia Kramer. Looking at the community memorial to Junior, the elder Guzman said he’s still having a hard time. “I think about my son every day. I cry every day,” he said. Will the new initiatives work? “If you give kids something to do to buy their time, it keeps them out the streets. The more they have on their brain, the less violence they have on their mind,” one resident said. “We can’t allow the gangs to win, but we have to involve parents now. Parents need to talk with their children,” said another. “They need role models, they need people who actually grew up in this neighborhood that will guide them to let them know this is not the right way to go.” another added. Many of the programs are expected to begin this summer and fall, including a youth baseball and softball academy run in partnership with Major League Baseball. It’s expected to serve 1,500 kids.
