Police in Miami Township, in the western part of the state near Indiana, announced on Friday that they have received reports that 15-year-old Thomas Kolding has been sighted in their area. “He’s a good kid. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Many of our nation’s heroes will be marching through Manhattan on Sunday for the annual Veterans Day parade. On Saturday, many of those men and women took part in a walk carrying rucksacks similar to the ones used by the military. The group began at Madison Square Park and ended at the 9/11 Memorial, stopping at all the war memorials along the way. The walkers included a Medal of Honor recipient, who will be the grand marshall in Sunday’s parade. “Every time I’m in New York, we make a stop here,” Florent Groberg said. “It’s always crowded, and just showcases the reality of this country. That we love our troops, we love our country, and we understand that freedom is not free.” The Veterans Day parade kicks off at 11 a.m. at Madison Square Park, and travels up Fifth Avenue to 53rd Street.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A young girl from New York is using a toy to combat a complicated disease. CBS2’s Clark Fouraker spent the day at “Puzzle Time,” where patients of all ages work on puzzles to help ward off the symptoms from Alzheimer’s. 11-year-old Hailey Richman has gathered other young people to help her out. “They’re so effective because it stimulates the visual cortex inside the brain and it calms them down,” she said. Hailey has distributed some 35,000 puzzles around the country for the effort by the non profit Puzzles to Remember, which leans on peer-reviewed research showing something as simple as puzzles can have a big impact on patients. High school students and girl scouts volunteer at hospitals and nursing homes. “She’s better than I am that’s for sure, but I’d have to say I did a little bit of work here,” Elias Kanner said. The non profit partnered with a company to develop a special type of puzzle suitable for Alzheimer’s patients. They include 36 extra-large pieces with images that adults would enjoy. “Most puzzles that have 36 pieces have Mickey Mouse on them, doesn’t mean they need Mickey Mouse,” Hailey said. “It’s kind of humiliating. I mean, they’re still an adult, so it has an image that’s stimulating to them.” Hailey’s passion for Alzheimer’s started after doctors diagnosed her grandmother with the disease when she was four. While helping care for her, she noticed she couldn’t find much support. As a result, she started Kid Caregivers, an online support group for kids. “We took a very sad time in our lives and are seeing that the only way to have happiness in this world is to give back and make a difference,” Hailey’s mom, Emma, said. Emma helps Hailey coordinate Puzzle Time. He daughter won a community spirit award earlier this year, and donated the money she earned to the Cure Alzheimer’s fund.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Authorities said two men were killed and four more wounded in a shooting outside a South LA liquor store Saturday evening. The incident happened outside Monarch Liquors around 8:30 p.m. at 88th and Vermont Avenue in what officials are calling a drive-by shooting. The four wounded are expected to survive. KCAL9’s Jeff Nguyen said detectives told him there were bullet casings up and down the street. Witnesses said they heard about a dozen shots. They said several people riding in a black, four-door vehicle drove by and began shooting. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Nguyen spoke to several witnesses, none of them wanted to appear on camera. “I was in a car with my cousin,” one woman said, “and they just started shooting out the window. I got out when the shooting started and I went in cause my mom was in the store. And basically when I came out, a person that I know was shot and on the ground. And shot a couple of times. He was just an innocent bystander. It’s crazy.” Another man said he saw people running for cover. “I saw people running towards the corner,” he said, “and when I came to see it, my friends were still there. And there was a guy dead. And I just backed up, I didn’t want to see it.” What led up to the shooting is under investigation.

Cyclone personnel safely guided guests from the cars without incident. Power has been restored and inspectors have inspected the ride to certify that everything is fully safe and operational. STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — The Los Angeles Police Dept. has identified the two officers who accidentally shot into a crowded Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake during a firefight with a suspected gunman last Saturday, resulting in the death of store manager Melyda “Mely” Corado. Officers Sinlen Tse and Sarah Winans were named in the late Friday LAPD press release . Tse and Winans were involved in the pursuit that led to the shootout at the Silver Lake Trader Joe’s on the afternoon of July 21. According to police, Gene Atkins, 28, allegedly shot his grandmother and girlfriend at the family’s home on East 32nd Street in South L.A. around 1:30 p.m. Atkins then fled northbound, after which the vehicle he was driving was tracked via LoJack in the Hollywood area after 3 p.m. Atkins then led Tse and Winans on a pursuit that ended when he crashed into a pole outside the Trader Joe’s on the 2700 block of Hyperion Avenue. Atkins is said to have shot at officers during the chase and continued to shoot at them once he ran into the store, the press release states. The officers shot back at Atkins as they sought cover just behind a north wall abutting the store’s parking lot. During the shootout, store manager Melyda “Mely” Corado was hit by a bullet shot by police as she attempted to run away from the store, the department said in the days following the incident. The LAPD did not say which officer’s bullet struck Corado. Police attempted to revive the 27-year-old woman but she died at the scene, police said. “The two Los Angeles police officers who had been pursuing Atkins returned fire in defense of their lives and to protect Atkins from harming other individuals,” Chief Michel Moore told reporters last week. Atkins was shot in his left forearm and barricaded himself inside the store with several hostages inside. After a three-hour standoff, Atkins allowed himself to be handcuffed and was taken into custody. He faces 30 charges, including one count of murder, six counts of attempted murder, 13 counts of false imprisonment of hostages and one count of felony evading. His arraignment was postponed for August 14, and he is being held on $18.7 million bail. Since Atkins caused the shootout, he is being charged with Corado’s murder despite not having shot her. The community of Silver Lake has come together to honor the life of Melyda Corado, who was described by family members and coworkers as a loving person who liked to make people laugh. Several vigils have been held for Corado at the store, which is still lined with hundreds of flowers and letters to Corado. The family released the following statement thanking the community: “On behalf of the Corado family, we would like to thank family, friends, our Trader Joe’s family, the Silver Lake community, and people all over the nation for their overwhelming love and support during this immensely difficult time. We will never heal from this senseless tragedy, but everyone’s thoughts and prayers are helping us cope with this insurmountable loss.” The family also announced Corado’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 29 at Forest Hills Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills. The service will be open to the public. The Los Angeles Times editorial board applauded the LAPD’s “welcome bit of transparency” in the shooting’s aftermath, while some have questioned the officers’ decision to shoot at a moving target from a considerable distance towards a crowded grocery store.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Staten Island homeowners were picking up the pieces Saturday after powerful storms passed through our area Friday afternoon. “We want our power back,” New Dorp resident Marie Riveccio told CBS2’s Dave Carlin. Electric company workers, city parks department crews and private contractors did a sweaty dance Saturday, ducking out of each other’s way for their grueling jobs on hard-hit Bancroft Avenue. “There are a lot of people that live without air conditioning,” said Riveccio. “But I can’t.” But losing your power wasn’t the worst that could happen – try having your bedroom ceiling vented with tree limbs poking in. George Menduina said he’s stuck, unable to get the tree off his home more than a day after it fell, despite making call after call. “You gotta get the tree off the house,” he said. “You gotta get a tree cutting company. Dilemma here now — I call them, they say, ‘well, we can’t cut the tree it belongs to the parks department.’” He was glad when the parks department arrived in the afternoon. But then, he got bad news. Parks department workers told Carlin that complicating the cleanup was that a crucial piece of equipment was not working properly. “That loader is not working right now. It has to reach in and grab it and pull it up and out,” one man said. “There’s another one, but there’s not this weekend.” The workers left, saying there may be no budging the tree for several more days. Menduina wasn’t the only resident complaining about getting the run-around. “The tree across the street fell right on top of it,” said Susie Sotomayor. Winds caused a tree to crush her husband’s motorcycle. She said she immediately called 311, then waited and waited. “I called again 311, I spoke to the operator there. She transferred me over to Con Edison, and they said that neither the police nor the fire department had notified Con Edison,” she said. Sotomayor said she’s learning the physical mess of the storm is only the half of it. It’s also the mess of reporting damage, filing insurance claims and scanning weather reports, thinking, ‘please, no more storms.’ Suffering a power outage or have an issue to report to your local utility company? NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A gun scare caused chaos Saturday at a subway station in Brooklyn. Police swept the Bedford Avenue station in Williamsburg around 1:20 p.m. and said they found no evidence of shots fired or a gun. A woman on an L train approaching the station reportedly said passengers in her car started running toward her yelling that someone had a gun. Another woman said her husband had to run from one end of the train to the other with their 3-year-old while everyone was screaming. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority acknowledged the “frightening situation” in a tweet and said lost items can be picked up at the station or a Penn Station lost and found. To follow up, NYPD arrived on the scene. There was no gunman found and no reports of any shots fired. We know that may have been a frightening situation but we are committed to the safety of our customers at all times. Glad everyone is safe. ^JL — NYCT Subway (@NYCTSubway) July 28, 2018 (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)
