NYPD: Search On For Suspects In Livery Cab Driver Robbery
AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — At least one person is dead after an overnight head-on crash on Long Island. It happened at the intersection of Oak Street and Belmont Court in Amityville. Amityville police were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Video from overnight shows at least three cars involved in the crash, two with extensive damage and a third that appears to have minor damage. “I heard two loud bangs,” neighbor Kirk Uson told CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis. “It’s a little upsetting. Once in a while, they fly up and down through here pretty fast. It’s a little upsetting.” It is not clear what caused the crash or how many people were involved. Police say this is an active investigation.

The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Route 1, the state’s major north-south artery, near Townsend. State Police M. Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said that a southbound pickup truck crossed the median and struck a northbound passenger car. She said the car came to rest on the median, while the pickup truck continued to travel southbound in the northbound lanes and hit a minivan carrying the New Jersey family of six. The two occupants of the pickup truck and the single occupant of the car were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A family spokesperson tells CBS Philly the father, 61-year-old man Audie Trinidad, and his daughters Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, Melissa, 13, and Allison, also 13, were all pronounced dead at the scene. He said the family lived in Teaneck for more than 20 years. The father was an usher at the Church of Anastasia, where the family regularly attended services. “Couple tears went down my face. I was actually at work this morning, and I just can’t believe it,” said neighbor Juan Gomez. “Ever since 2006 when I moved over here, we’ve always been friends, always together. So I’ve known them very well.” Gomez said he grew up with the oldest daughter Kaitlyn, who was entering her junior year studying nursing at the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx. “Very loving, her dad was very nice, he would always really care about them,” he added. “They were an amazing family to me and they always were there for me and stuff. Like whenever I cam to their house, they would always provide food for me and stuff,” said friend Laysha Stengeo. “I’m very thankful for them.” “Nice, hardworking, friendly, people you’d want to have as your neighbors, decent people, church-going,” neighbor Leslie Peterson added. The Filipino American Society organized a vigil for the family Saturday night at Votee Park, and a GoFundMe page was set up for the mother. “They are very good kids,” their grandmother said. “It’s OK to look and ask questions where there are no answers,” Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin told the crowd. “Hug your children, hug your friends, love each other.” “(Danna) was just an amazing young lady. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The man accused of shooting an NYPD detective early Friday morning in Brooklyn has been charged with attempted murder, among other charges. Kelvin Stichel, 33, was charged Saturday with attempted aggravated murder of a peace officer, attempted murder and robbery. Police said Det. Miguel Soto and his partner were in an unmarked police van when they noticed 33-year-old Kelvin Stichel, who was wanted in a domestic armed robbery. “The police identified themselves and told the man to show them his hands,” said Police Commissioner James O’Neill. “The suspect then displayed a gun and shot at the officers, striking a detective once in the leg. The detective returned fire as the two other officers and the suspect ran away.” Soto was shot once in the right thigh, and the bullet passed through his leg. The 32-year-old husband, father and seven-year member of the NYPD was treated at Kings County Hospital and released about eight hours later. “He’s a real tough guy. I’m glad he’s part of the NYPD. He does a great job each and every day,” O’Neill said. Stichel was shot in the arm. Officers followed a trail of blood to find him hiding in the hallway of an apartment building on Kingston Avenue. Man Accused Of Shooting NYPD Detective Charged With Attempted Murder
GOLETA (CBSLA/AP) — A fast-moving brush fire in the Santa Barbara County community of Goleta has damaged or destroyed 20 homes and structures and was threatening scores more Saturday morning, as thousands of people evacuated to safety. (Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason/Twitter) The Holiday Fire started as a structure fire sometime before 8:45 p.m. on North Fairview Avenue, above Goleta, and quickly spread to nearby brush, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department reports. The fire had burned at least 60 acres as of 8 a.m. Saturday morning and was only 5 percent contained. Total calm Saturday morning replaced the 50 mile-per-hour gusts and forward progress of the fire was stopped, Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni said. “It’s really given us a good opportunity to get in there and get some work done,” Zaniboni said, cautioning that critical fire weather warnings would remain in effect until the evening. An excessive heat warning was in effect until 9 p.m. for Santa Barbara County, the National Weather Service reported, while a red flag warning was in effect through 6 p.m. (Mike Eliason/Twitter) Evacuations were in effect for about 2,500 people. They applied to areas north of the Cathedral Oaks neighborhood to West Camino Cielo Road, and from La Patera Lane, west to North Patterson Avenue. All roads going north from La Patera Lane to Patterson Avenue, along Cathedral Oaks, were closed to the public. There have been no reported injuries. California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Santa Barbara County Saturday morning. As some houses smoldered, a few residents who hadn’t left or had managed to return surveyed damage that seemed random: destroyed homes next to others completely intact. Eric Durtschi stood outside his destroyed house, where a burned-out car stood in the driveway and kids’ bicycles were strewn about. Durtschi, his wife and six children had left Utah and moved in just a few weeks ago. He said he hadn’t yet told his two oldest children their home was gone. He managed to collect his severely burned vintage guns, hoping to salvage them. Meanwhile, a neighbor across the street saw his home spared. The man had stayed through the night spraying down other people’s houses. The area is west of where the Thomas Fire, California’s largest in history, raged last December . Brush Fire Rips Through Goleta; At Least 20 Structures Destroyed, Thousands Evacuated
SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA) — A former UCLA and NBA basketball star was found dead inside a Sherman Oaks home Saturday morning after he barricaded himself inside the residence for 11 hours following a shootout with officers. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Tyler Honeycutt, according to TMZ. (Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) The incident began when Los Angeles police responded to a man with a gun call in the 4900 block of Tyrone Avenue around 5 p.m. Friday and the man fired at officers, who returned fire. The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, so police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team, according to LAPD Officer Jeff Lee. A SWAT team entered the home and located an unresponsive male, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the LAPD tweeted at 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Police later confirmed that the suspect appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was not struck by any gunfire from the officers. No officers were injured. Some residents were evacuated during the standoff. It’s unclear if they’ve been allowed to return home. Honeycutt played two seasons at UCLA from 2009 to 2011 and then spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings after being taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. He then spent several seasons playing in Europe. At the time of his death, he was playing for the club BC Khimki in Russia.
