PEMBERTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – It’s National Blueberry Month and peak season for the popular fruit. CBS2’s Cindy Hsu visited Haines Berry Farm in Pemberton, New Jersey, where people can pick their own. “I make jams with them, pies. I like them with sour cream, which a lot of people don’t like, but I personally like them with sour cream,” blueberry lover Karen Ayrer told Hsu, adding the bigger the berry, the juicer. The farm had everything from blueberry mustard to blueberry honey and blueberry soap. The commercial growing of blueberries started in South Jersey thanks to a local woman who began shipping them in 1916. “Elizabeth White was the first person to cultivate blueberries at Whites Bog over in Browns Mills, which is only a few miles from here,” farm owner Timothy Haines said. It’s now the Garden State’s No. 1 crop, with a production value of nearly $84 million a year. The United States is responsible for 90 percent of the world’s blueberry supply, and New Jersey ranks in the top six places nationwide when it comes to blueberry production. Haines’s grandfather bought the farm in 1954 and showed Hsu the best way to choose blueberries once they’re in the store. He said make sure they’re all blue – you don’t want any green or red ones hiding in there – and look for a white coating around the berry. “They should have this white bloom on them, and that’s a naturally occurring yeast. And it just makes them more attractive,” he explained. There should be no juice on the bottom of the container. If there is, it’s a sign that the berries have been around too long. Haines said there are hundreds of different varieties of blueberries, but the most popular are Duke and Blue Crop. Jeff Devends, of Toms River, said he loves them all. “Luckily, they don’t weigh us before we start, because we’ll probably eat more blueberries than we actually pick,” he said. Blueberry season in New Jersey lasts through the end of July, so you still have a few weeks to enjoy the locally grown berries. Experts say blueberries last around a week in the refrigerator. But if you freeze them, they’ll last a year.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo is feeling the political heat after another member of his administration is convicted of federal corruption charges . The governor was greeted by cheers and applause Friday at a Brooklyn Catering Hall as he spoke at a reproductive rights rally and a press conference demanding senate passage of speed camera legislation . Those events only delayed the unavoidable questions about the federal corruption conviction of Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, the man he picked to spur upstate development – the so-called “Buffalo Billions Project.” “The law is the law, and this was a violation of the public trust,” Cuomo said. According to CBS2’s Marcia Kramer, the governor tried to distance himself from Kaloyeros, who was convicted of steering contracts to build a solar panel plant and other high-tech firms to preferred developers that were also political donors to the governor. Cuomo pointed out that Dr. Kaloyeros was a longtime state employee originally hired by former Republican Gov. George Pataki. Kaloyeros was charged with redeveloping Albany, which he reportedly did with great success. “Dr. Kaloyeros, who was so impactful during the Pataki years, he was I think the highest paid state employee at a million dollars,” Cuomo added. Cuomo kept Kaloyeros on his staff and lavished him with praise in 2014. “You met Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, he’s New York’s secret weapon,” the governor said four years ago. Cuomo’s political opponents in this fall’s race for governor pounced on the conviction. “We can’t clean up Albany until we clean up the governor’s mansion,” gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon said. “It doesn’t have to be like this.” “I think the public has gotten used to this and believes this is just the way it is,” Republican candidate Marc Molinaro added. “This isn’t the way democracy is supposed to function. This isn’t honest, it isn’t decent, it isn’t fair and it isn’t right. And I’m hopeful New Yorkers will understand that and sweep the place clean this November.” Former Gov. Pataki says he didn’t hire Kaloyeros, Gov. Mario Cuomo did. “For Andrew Cuomo to try to push the cloud of corruption onto my administration is despicable,” he said in a statement.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The city wants even more people to ride in the Rockaways. A new pilot program just launched, bringing dockless biking to the boardwalk. “If you get off the ferry, it’s going to be a good way to get around, if you want to go to a restaurant or something,” said Rockaways resident Ava Mollaghan. “I think a lot of people here already have their own bikes, if you look, it’s basically useless here,” said Rockaways resident Bill Boden. The companies Lime and Pace are supplying the bikes. Users can download their apps to find and rent a bike, then ride it — but only in the neighborhood. When you’re done, the city says lock up the bike at any existing bike rack or on the sidewalk out of the way of pedestrians. It’s different from the popular Citi Bikes , where you have to get them and return them at special docking stations. “Couldn’t be simpler and it’s only a dollar for a 30 minute ride” said Mayor de Blasio. Other cities have had problems with people leaving dockless bikes anywhere — something officials here will be watching closely. “It’s a fair question, and that’s why we’re trying to do a careful pilot. We’re not going to flood any neighborhood with too many bikes,” said New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. The future of transportation in New York City may go beyond bicycles. Lime also has electric scooters. Earlier this week, the company and Uber announced a new scooter partnership. Both companies are now working to make scooters available in the Uber app. Lime CEO & Co-Founder Tony Sun and the DOT said there’s currently no plan to bring the scooters to the city. “I think for now we’re going to focus on bikes,” Trottenberg said. What may be an exciting prospect for some, sounds like a recipe for more traffic congestion for others. As part of the dockless pilot, bikes will also be coming to Northern Staten Island, the Fordham section of the Bronx, and later this year Coney Island. Companies will use GPS tracking to make sure the bikes are being kept in their designated zones.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Governor Andrew Cuomo and state health officials have released a report recommending the legalization of marijuana in New York State. The report , commissioned by the governor and released Friday, concludes that “taxing and regulating marijuana far outweighs any potential negative consequences.” The report recommends allowing recreational marijuana be made available to adults across the state and claims taxes would bring in over $1.3 billion each year from sales of the controversial substance. Cuomo first announced plans for the marijuana study during his executive budget proposal address. “We are pleased that the Governor and the State Department of Health have fully studied the existing evidence and accurately concluded that legalizing marijuana for adult use is the right choice for New York,” policy coordinator for the Drug Policy Alliance, Chris Alexander said in a statement. State officials also cited a 2017 poll which reportedly found that 62 percent of New York voters support making marijuana legal for adults over 21.

Peachtree City, GA (CBS Local)- Normally, deer tend to scurry away when humans approach. However, in one Georgia town, a group of deer have become aggressive, attacking multiple dogs and injuring one so badly that it had to be put down. According to CBS 46 in Atlanta, GA, deer in southeast Peachtree City have attacked at least a dozen dogs in the area. Caroline Lucsko, whose daughter Carolyn Taylor’s dog was attacked, described how the attack happened. “All of the sudden, the deer started chasing them, and my daughter took off, running really fast, and the deer just trampled on her little basset hound,” said Lucsko. Resident Hunter Wood, whose dog had to be euthanized after it was attacked when a doe jumped the fence into his backyard, told CBS 46 that he believes people are to blame for the deer’s lack of fear. “We’ve got such a heavy deer population in this area, which is partly contributed to the fact that the neighbors feed them,” said Wood. He believes that the deer are mistaking the dogs for coyotes, which is the reason for the aggressive behavior.

Springfield, Ore. (CBS Local) — Dogs are typically known as being man’s best friend, but one dog in Oregon is going to be known for a whole different reason. An Oregon man, who was flying a drone, claims a dog caused him to crash his drone and start a fire. “If nothing else I would like for this to be a cautionary tale about dog ownership and fire danger this time of year,” he said. “I know I’m going to be a lot more careful.” The video above shows the drone crashing into the ground and bursting into flames. The drone pilot, known as Cameron Austin-Connelly on social media, wrote on Facebook what happened once he was attacked by a dog. “This guy walks by with two dogs and one of them jumps on me knocking the transmitter out of my hands,” Cameron Austin-Connolly wrote on Facebook. The Eugene Springfield Fire Department arrived at the scene and cleared the area within an hour after Austin-Connelly called 911 to report the fire. This was unlike anything the department had ever dealt with. “My drone crashes and when I go to look for it I saw smoke and flames so I called 911,” Austin-Connolly wrote on Facebook. “Springfield FD quickly showed up and put out the flames. They even returned my drone and gopro. The Fire Marshall said that was their first drone fire.”

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – Firefighters responding to a car fire in a residential neighborhood in Santa Ana Friday morning found a body inside the vehicle. At the location where a body was found. (CBS2) Sometime before 7:20 a.m. Orange County Fire Authority crews and Santa Ana police responded to a burning car in the 900 block of South Hickory Street in Santa Ana. After extinguishing the fire, crews discovered a male body inside, police spokesman Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told CBS2. The identity of the victim was not disclosed. The fire was mainly confined to the interior of the car. Investigators are unsure about the cause of the death or the cause of the fire at this time, Bertagna said.

WASHINGTON (CBS News) – Twelve Russians have been indicted by a grand jury in the special counsel probe for alleged hacking during the 2016 election, including for hacking emails of the Democratic National Committee, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced Friday. (Getty Images) Rosenstein said the 12 defendants are all members of the Russian intelligence arm GRU, and attempted to interfere with the 2016 presidential election by spear phishing volunteers and employees of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. By doing this, according to the indictment, they were able to steal usernames and passwords, eventually hacking into the networks of the Democratic National Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee. The GRU, Rosenstein said, created and controlled the groups D.C. Leaks and Guccifer 2.0., which in 2016, posted thousands of emails from Democratic party officials. READ HERE: The Mueller Indictment The indictment says that the alleged conspirators “spearphished individuals affiliated with the Clinton campaign throughout the summer of 2016,” and then goes on to say that “on or about July 27, 2016, the conspirators attempted after hours to spearphish for the first time email accounts at a domain hosted by a third-party provider and used by Clinton’s personal office. At or around the same time, they also targeted seventy-six email addresses at the domain for the Clinton campaign.” On that same day, July 27, 2016, Donald Trump expressed the hope that Russia would find Clinton’s missing emails. “I will tell you this — Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press,” the GOP presidential nominee said at a press conference in Miami. In another related allegation, the indictment claims Russian officers hacked a state election board’s website and stole the information of roughly 500,000 voters. The indictment also alleges the GRU officers hacked into computers belonging to a company that supplies software used to verify voter information, and targeted local and state election offices. Rosenstein made it clear that no Americans are accused of any wrongdoing. “There is no allegation in this indictment that Americans knew they were corresponding with Russian intelligence officers,” said Rosenstein, who also noted there is no evidence the alleged hacking had any impact on the election results. The indictment does mention that Russians provided opposition research to a congressional candidate, although that individual is not named. The indictment claims the conspirators, posing as Guccifer 2.0, “received a request for stolen documents from a candidate for the U.S. Congress. The Conspirators responded using the Guccifer 2.0 persona and sent the candidate stolen documents related to the candidate’s opponent,” the indictment reads. The charges come just days before President Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. Rosenstein said he briefed Mr. Trump on the indictment earlier this week. “I’ll allow president to speak for himself,” Rosenstein said, asked for Mr. Trump’s response to the news. “Obviously it’s Important for the president to know what information we’ve uncovered because he’s got to make very important decisions for the country. So he needs to understand what evidence we have of foreign election interference.” The White House honed in on Rosenstein’s statement that the indictment does not include any Americans, or say the Russians influenced the election results. The statement did not condemn the Russians’ alleged behavior. ” Today’s charges include no allegations of knowing involvement by anyone on the campaign and no allegations that the alleged hacking affected the election result. This is consistent with what we have been saying all along,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said. Back in July 2016, Mr. Trump tweeted that the “new joke in town” is Russia leaked the “disastrous DNC emails.” “The new joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC e-mails, which should never have been written (stupid), because Putin likes me,” he tweeted on July 25, 2016. Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer who is aiding Mr. Trump in the Russia investigation, used Rosenstein’s announcement as an opportunity to call on Mueller to end his investigation and declare Mr. Trump’s innocence. When a reporter in London asked Mr. Trump if he would bring up election meddling with Putin, Mr. Trump said he would. The charges come after Mueller’s investigation has already led to the indictment of 13 Russian nationals who were accused of manipulating social media. Ryan Mayer While some of the future NBA stars are lighting up the court in Las Vegas in Summer League, Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker chose to take his game to the blacktop and take on some fans in a pickup game. Parker put out a post on Instagram yesterday afternoon of him in his basketball shoes with the address of a local park in Milwaukee. Fans in the area flocked to the court and Parker played in some pick-up games with those that showed up. CBS 58 News was able to talk to Parker and ask him why he chose to come out and shoot some hoops with the community. “My whole neighborhood is St. Francis which I lived in for three years so its pretty much home to me and no better place to me than right off the highway and right by the lake,” said Parker. Local sports anchor Scott Grodsky was able to get some video of Parker playing in the pickup game, which he shared on Twitter last night. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Summer time is vacation time for many, but all that traveling could leave some of us jet lagged. Now a gym and an airline have joined forces to help you beat that unfortunate side effect of flying. If you’ve got a bit of a layover, there’s a new kind of lounge to help keep travelers in tip-top shape. It’s called Sweatlag — the workout to wipe out jet lag. Sara Suwanasung just returned home from a whirlwind trip. “I went to Dublin, Ireland and spent 48 hours in Dublin. And then from Dublin, went straight to Canada and spent 24 hours in Vancouver. So it’s been quite a week,” said Suwanasung. And she’s feeling the drag. “Jet lag for sure! I haven’t got much sleep,” said Suwanasung. So she’s trying to work off her jet lag with Sweatlag, a new workout offered at Equinox in conjunction with Delta Airlines and it’s designed for the traveler. Equinox’s Dana McCaw recommends a workout before you takeoff and 24 hours after you land to improve and sync your circadian rhythms. “Fit individuals are less likely to experience jet lag,” said McCaw. Even through the class is a partnership with Delta, you can also get your Sweatlag on even if you’ve traveled on another airline. “It is open to anybody who has a recent boarding pass,” said a representative for Delta. It’s a class that will have you jumping, running and stretching it out. “It was designed to be a non-equipment, take-with-you anywhere workout,” said McCaw. Like maybe even back to your hotel where you can try out the moves to get an extra boost. And instructors give pre-trip, en route, and upon arrival advice to help travelers. “This class is just what I needed,” said Suwanasung. For now, Equinox only offers the classes at LAX. But you can head to their website where all the moves are posted for you to try.

The latest revelations, detailed this week by the Times, center on a deposition given in May by Deputy Samuel Aldama, who described under oath a tattoo on his calf featuring a skull in a military-style helmet bearing the letters CPT, for Compton, along with a rifle, encircled by flames. He said he got the tattoo in June 2016, about two months before he was involved in the fatal shooting of Donta Taylor, The Times reported. Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that for the last year, the department has been examining deputy tattoos, logos and symbolism within the organization, but he hasn’t launched a new investigation into the Compton station deputies. He said there is also a separate administrative investigation into the shooting, which may address the deputy’s admissions. The department has a history of clandestine groups with names like the Regulators, Grim Reapers and Jump Out Boys that have been accused of promoting highly aggressive tactics and perpetuating a code of silence among members.
