By Chuck Carroll History (n): A continuous, systematic narrative of past events as relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc., usually written as a chronological account; chronicle. Odds are when you think about history, visions of textbooks that painstakingly outline every battle fought in the Civil War or the events the precipitated the fall of the Roman Empire come to mind. It’s flashing back to your childhood and your grandmother’s kitchen table, where she would spin yarns about her own upbringing or the family heritage, tales told so many times that they’ve been permanently etched into your brain. The anecdotes date back generations, centuries or more, to times (almost) long forgotten. History is in the past. Yet, World Wrestling Entertainment continues to find ways to turn it 180 degrees and make history in the future . On October 28, 2018 a major chapter in the sports entertainment history book will be written when the first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view will be held. Fittingly, WWE has chosen to call it Evolution. It’s the payoff for all of the blood, sweat and tears given by every female WWE superstar to ever set foot in the ring. Women are main eventing RAW and SmackDown , and with Ronda Rousey under contract, the company’s lead attraction is a woman. And all of it has spawned a modern-day cyber grassroots movement. “Three years ago, our fans demanded a change with the hashtag, #GiveDivasAChance, and an evolution started,” WWE Executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque, said in comments distributed by the company shortly after the event was announced. “Since that time, our female Superstars have over-delivered in every opportunity presented to them, and I expect nothing different during our first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view event.” The opportunities Levesque is referencing are the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble and Money In The Bank matches, both of which were huge hits with the audience. Evolution is an all-hands-on-deck event for every female WWE Superstar currently on the roster and perhaps those yet to sign a contract, as the finals of the second annual Mae Young Classic will be held on the show. The stacked card also features the Women’s Championships from both RAW and SmackDown as well as NXT being defended. WWE is also promising that the women from the forthcoming NXT UK brand will be represented. “This historic event marks another milestone in WWE’s women’s evolution,” said Stephanie McMahon, who has largely stepped away from an on-camera role to focus on her job as WWE’s Chief Brand Officer. “The spotlight just got brighter for these athletic, talented women, who will once again showcase to the world that they can break down barriers and blaze their own trails.” But this isn’t just about the future. Nor is it exclusively about the present. Rightfully, the women who paved the way for this night to happen will be honored as well. These are the WWE Superstars who have already made history as trailblazers in the industry. Hall of Famers Trish Stratus and Lita are already booked, and other names are expected to be announced in the coming months. The pay-per-view marks the second time this year that the company will pay homage to its legends. Torrie Wilson, Molly Holly, Michelle McCool, Vickie Guerrero, Jacqueline, Beth Phoenix, and the aforementioned Stratus and Lita were all entrants in the Royal Rumble. Perhaps we’ll see some of their familiar faces again. It wouldn’t be out of bounds to propose a tag match pitting the current roster against the women of yesteryear. A rekindling of old feuds may also be in order. Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus and LayCool vs. The Iiconics would fit the bill perfectly. Evolution will take place at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York. Tickets go on sale August 24. > > MORE: From the world of Pro Wrestling News and Notes Despite speculation to the contrary, tag titles for the women’s division aren’t in WWE’s plans for the immediate future. When asked about the possibility, Stephanie McMahon told Sky Sports , “Not quite yet but that’s absolutely something we’ve heard loud and clear from our fan base and it’s something we’re keen on implementing as soon as we are able to.” Roman Reigns is scheduled to face Brock Lesnar in a Universal Championship rematch at SummerSlam . Meanwhile, WWE is promoting that Lesnar will make his first television appearance in more than three months at next Monday’s RAW. On the SmackDown side, AJ Styles will defend the WWE Championship against Samoa Joe, while Carmella will put the SmackDown Women’s Championship on the line against Becky Lynch. Elsewhere on the SummerSlam card, Ronda Rousey gets her first crack at a title in WWE, as she faces Alexa Bliss for the RAW Women’s Championship; Dolph Ziggler will defend the Intercontinental title against Seth Rollins; and Braun Strowman will put his Money In The Bank briefcase on the line against Kevin Owens. Major League Wrestling’s Battle Riot is scheduled to air Friday in a special two-hour time slot. The event, which features a 40-man battle-royal-style match was taped last week in New York, features former WWE Superstars John Morrison, Jack Swagger, and Hornswoggle among others. Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix are also on the card. If you haven’t seen them, it’s worth your time to pull up a couple of their matches on YouTube. For what it’s worth, John Morrison — now John Hennigan — tells me that he’s very pleased with the MLW operation. A ticket pre-sale for the co-branded Ring of Honor/New Japan Pro Wrestling “G1 Supercard” show on WrestleMania weekend in New York is set for August 8, two days before they go on sale to the general public. Likely in an attempt to stifle ticket brokers, each HonorClub member is being emailed a one-time code needed to make the purchase, and there is also an eight-ticket limit. Speaking of Ring of Honor, Women of Honor regular Karen Q has been added to the list of competitors in the upcoming Mae Young Classic. She joins former ROH standout Deonna Purrazzo on the card. Purrazzo recently signed a contract with WWE after playing a key role in the development and launch of the Women of Honor Championship earlier this year. The masked luchadora Zeuxis, NXT UK ’s Isla Dawn, and former NCAA basketball champion Lacey Lane have also been announced as tournament competitors. The latter recently signed with NXT after training under the tutelage of The Dudley Boyz. Velvet Sky and Angelina Love have reunited as The Beautiful People and are accepting limited bookings. The wildly popular former TNA Knockouts will be appearing at Starrcast next month. In a recent interview with Press Slam, Velvet Sky accuses WWE of trying to copy The Beautiful People gimmick on two occasions. First with LayCool and more recently with the Iiconics. AMC Clears Chris Hardwick Of Wrongdoing, Reinstates Him To ‘Talking Dead’
NEW YORK (AP) — AMC host Chris Hardwick is returning to work after a review of sexual assault allegations against him by a former girlfriend. The network says returning Hardwick to work at “Talking Dead” and “Talking with Chris Hardwick” is the “appropriate step” after a review that included interviews with numerous people. It says Hardwick will return to “Talking Dead” Aug. 12. Substitute host Yvette Nicole Brown will be interim guest host of “The Walking Dead Season 9 Preview Special” on Aug. 5, and a guest on “Talking Dead” on Aug. 12. Hardwick has acknowledged that an online post by his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra alleging she had been sexually assaulted and emotionally abused referred to him. He has denied the allegations but has said the couple’s three-year relationship was imperfect and included arguments. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. (CBS Local)– Harvard’s student-run newspaper, The Crimson, is reporting one of the university’s sororities is ending the female-only Greek life tradition by becoming gender-neutral. Harvard’s chapter of the all-female sorority Kappa Alpha Theta will rebrand itself as as a gender-neutral “social group,” called “Theta Zeta Xi.” The soon-to-be former sorority will disaffiliate from its national organization in the fall of 2018, the club announced Monday, according to The Crimson. The announcement comes at the heels of a decision by Harvard to crack down on single-gender social clubs. Penalties imposed by the university in 2017 ban members of single-gender clubs and Greek organizations from holding student group leadership positions, becoming varsity athletic team captains and from receiving college endorsement for prestigious fellowships, The Crimson says. The Crimson reports that a statement was issued by Kappa Alpha Theta defending the decision as an “act of good faith.” Theta members voted unanimously to go co-ed, according to the statement. The sorority previously took a different stance. Last year, after Harvard administration voted to adopt the sanctions on single-gender clubs, the group released a statement pledging to continue its tradition of allowing only women to be the members, the Boston Globe reported.

EL SEGUNDO (AP) — Mattel, hurt by the closing of Toys ‘R’ Us stores, said Wednesday that it will cut more than 2,200 jobs as the maker of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars seeks to save money. Like other toy companies, Mattel has lost sales as Toys ‘R’ Us faltered. The toy retailer filed for bankruptcy protection last year, announced it was liquidating its business in March and then closed all its stores last month. Mattel rival Hasbro, however, reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results earlier this week, a sign that the maker of Monopoly and Play-Doh is rebounding from the demise of Toys ‘R’ Us. A Mattel spokesman said the job cuts will affect mainly its office workers worldwide and are part of the company’s efforts to slash at least $650 million in costs. Mattel, which is based in El Segundo has about 28,000 employees. Mattel Inc.’s stock fell nearly 9 percent to $14.85 in after-hours trading Wednesday, after dropping 1 percent during the regular trading day. The company had other bad news: Its financial results between April are June were worse than what Wall Street analysts had expected. It posted a loss of $240.9 million, or 70 cents per share, in the second quarter. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 56 cents per share, far larger than the loss of 32 cents per share analysts expected, according to Zacks Investment Research. Revenue fell 14 percent to $840.7 million, below the $863.1 million analysts expected. There were some bright spots: Barbie and Hot Wheels sales rose, even as Toys ‘R’ Us shuttered its doors. Other brands didn’t fare as well. Sales of its American Girl dolls fell, as did sales in its Fisher-Price brand. Ynon Kreiz, who was named CEO in April, said Wednesday that he expects the negative impact of Toys ‘R’ Us to subside by next year. Mattel, he said, is working closely with other retailers and looking for more ways to sell its toys online. “Mattel is a company with great potential,” Kreiz said in a conference call. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles judge ordered a man accused of stealing Frances McDormand’s best actress Oscar statuette to stand trial on a felony grand theft charge. Superior Court Judge Mark Hanasono said Wednesday that there was sufficient evidence for Terry Bryant to stand trial. The ruling came after a hearing in which a worker with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences testified about taking the Oscar away from Bryant as he tried to leave the ceremony’s official after-party. “God is on my side,” Bryant, 47, was heard saying in court after the ruling. Bryant is due to be arraigned Aug. 8. McDormand won the award for best actress in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and lost the statuette after having it engraved at the post-ceremony Governors Ball. Cesario Tio, a film academy worker who was escorting a photographer taking pictures at the ball, said he heard on a walkie-talkie that McDormand’s Oscar was missing. He said he later saw a man, who he identified in court as Bryant, walk out of the ball holding a statuette and yelling “We did it! We did it.” Tio said neither he nor the photographer recognized the man. The photographer took a picture of Bryant, who told them his statuette was won for best producer on “Get Out,” which Tio said he immediately knew wasn’t an award. A blown up image from the photographer’s camera showed a portion of McDormand’s name. Tio said he then grabbed the statuette from Bryant. “He said, ‘Hey, I’m holding that for a friend,’” Tio testified. He said Bryant followed him back into the Governors Ball, where Tio handed the statuette off to security and he didn’t see Bryant again. Bryant remains released on his own recognizance. His attorney, Daniel Brookman, argued in court that Bryant didn’t try to hide that he had McDormand’s Oscar, and the charge should be dismissed. “There was never any intent to deprive the owner of the property on a permanent basis,” Brookman said. The attorney also said McDormand did not want Bryant to be prosecuted and displayed a police detective’s report that said the actress “stated she is not desirous of prosecution.” Hanasono did not allow the police report to be entered into evidence. McDormand did not attend Wednesday’s hearing. Much of the hearing focused on the value of the Oscar statuette, which a lawyer for the academy said cost the organization between $2,300 and $2,500 for it to purchase. The lawyer said the award was actually probably priceless to most winners, and noted that winners could not sell them on the open market or give them away to anyone but their heirs. DJ Sixsmith New York will always have a special place in David Denman’s heart. The actor went to school at Julliard, lived in NYC and recently returned to the Big Apple to film his new movie “Puzzle”, which hits theaters on Friday. “The city started evolving when I moved here from California,” Denman told CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “I was here in the late 90s and it used to be a little sketch to go near Times Square. Now, there are luxury apartments and restaurants on every corner.” Denman was the first member of his family to go to college and didn’t realize a school specifically for acting existed until his friend told him. The Juilliard School features prominent alums such as Robin Williams, Jessica Chastain and Miles Davis, and Denman says the experience at the prominent New York theater school lived up to the hype. “Juilliard has the luxury of a certain standard of excellence. The training was great for me, it was very challenging and very difficult,” said Denman. “There was a lot of pressure, but that pressure prepared me for the business where I had to do a monologue in front of 150 people on a set.” David’s fondest New York memories include getting pizza with friends at Sacco Pizza and frequenting several bars on 9th Avenue near Lincoln Center. In fact, Denman got the chance to live in New York for the first time in 20 years while filming his new movie and checked out some of the same bars with his friends. The 45-year-old actor is best known for his roles as Roy in “The Office” and Boon in “13 Hours.” Denman has worked with stars such as Gene Hackman, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith and Daniel Craig, but he will never forget his time on “The Office.” “There were only six episodes in the first season and the numbers weren’t great. The only reason they kept us on the air was because we were the most downloaded show on iTunes. You don’t always get the opportunity to be on something like that with so many talented folks.” . @David_Denman discusses his new movie #Puzzle and what it was like to play Roy on The Office https://t.co/pXQxipW7CE pic.twitter.com/Y72P1thm1V — CBS Local (@cbslocal) July 26, 2018 While Denman has played many great roles in his career, he is excited about his new movie “Puzzle,” which was shot right here in New York. The movie features scenes at Grand Central Terminal, Washington Square Park and several other iconic spots in the city.

ECHO PARK (CBSLA) — A search for a man who went into Echo Park Lake after his swan paddleboat overturned has shifted from rescue to recovery. A dive team is now on scene to help firefighters find a man who was reported to have gone into the lake after a paddleboat he and his cousin were in overturned just before 4 a.m. Firefighters spent the morning searching the lake’s murky water, going out into paddleboats themselves and using their flashlights to scan the surface. They also used the lights from ladder trucks to try and illuminate the water. Witnesses say the two men were part of a large group that had been drinking. One man was able to get to the side of the lake after the paddleboat overturned, and was seen yelling for help and to not let his cousin drown. Echo Park Lake is popular for its paddleboat rentals, but the service shuts down at sunset. Witnesses say the group was at the lake after hours, and it’s unclear when they went out into the boat.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — As the MTA announces plans to increase fares twice over the next three years, a new report finds more customers are opting for rideshare services, which is also causing increased congestion. MTA officials announced Wednesday that they’ll be raising fares by 4 percent next year and another 4 percent in 2021. Officials say the hikes are necessary to stave off budget deficits and decreased ridership. “As we stated in November and as we stated in February, the MTA requires new sources of sustainable revenue for operations and for capital,” said Chief Financial Officer Robert Foran. “Again, those are forecasted. They’re still subject to our need, they’re subject to public hearings and they’re subject to board action.” Just the thought of another fare hike has MTA riders upset. “I think it’s absurd,” one rider said. “I don’t think we’re seeing an improvement in service.” “The fares increase, but service stays the same or gets worse,” said another. Part of the reason for the increase in lower ridership appears to be competition from rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, CBS2’s Janelle Burrell reported. According to transportation consultant Bruce Schaller’s study The New Automobility , the effects of ridershares is not only impacting the use of public transit, but it’s also causing more congestion. The report shows that about 60 percent of people who use the services in large cities would have used public transportation or walked, biked or not made that trip if rideshare services weren’t available. MTA Chairman Joe Lhota said the transit system is experiencing a nationwide trend of fewer riders. He said it’s due to a combination of service, for-hire vehicles and fare evasion. SILVER LAKE (CBSLA) — An emotional vigil was held Wednesday for Melyda “Mely” Corado, the Trader Joe’s manager who was fatally wounded in a shootout between police and an attempted murder suspect last Saturday. “There is a piece of it that feels like it happened to me, This was a tragedy and a trauma that affected all of us,” said one woman, one of hundreds who came out to show their support for the victim and her family. KCAL9’s Crystal Cruz reports that tragedy is what brought out many people in Silver Lake just outside the store where Corado was killed. “It was incredibly horrifying what happened here and I just wanted to show my support for the victim and her family and everyone who was involved with that,” said one young man. The community is keeping Corado’s family, including her brother Albert, in their thoughts. The LAPD released body camera video and confirmed Corado was killed by one of their bullets. They were returning fire from suspect Gene Atkins who took hostages after shooting his girlfriend and grandmother. The L.A. County Coroner identified Melyda “Mely” Corado as the victim of the shooting at the Silver Trader Joe’s on July 21, 2018. (Source: Joe Cordova/GoFundMe) Silver Lake resident, and well-known actress Anne-Marie Johnson says she doesn’t blame the officers. “I’m not second guessing the LAPD. People would be complaining if they didn’t take action,” Johnson said. A priest prayed and blessed the sidewalk where a memorial of flowers and heartfelt notes like “I didn’t know you but I can tell by the posts and your pics that you were one of the good ones” are being left. Neighbor Jerome Courshon hopes politicians are watching. “Look this a wake up call on some level for people to realize that gun violence is an issue that hasn’t been addressed by our elected representatives, and I’m pro gun. But we don’t have any viable laws on the books across this country,” Jerome Courshon. The attorney for Corado’s family plans on releasing a statement about her death on Thursday.

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — A stunt gone wrong in Newport Beach. As CBSLA’s Tina Patel reports, a guy jumped off the Lido Island Bridge and slammed into a boat. A woman on that boat was injured but before she could do anything the jumper got away. Video posted to social media shows a boy, possibly in his late teens, jump off a bridge onto the canopy of a boat passing underneath. The canopy buckled under his weight. The woman who rented the boat was hit in the head but luckily only suffered minor injuries. She said the boy fell off into the water then before she could do anything he swam to shore and limped away. “It looked intentional. I don’t want to say it was,” said Jake Leonardo, manager of the boat rental company OC Boat Rental. “I’m not going to put anyone’s actions, say someone’s actions were intentional. But it appears that way. It looks like he was trying to jump over the boat as a joke but either way it’s an unsafe situation for anybody.” Harbor Patrol responded. They are looking into the incident. They don’t know if it could be considered assault since the teen might have been trying to jump over the boat but they want to identify who it is. If you have any information on who it might be, you’re asked to come forward.

Concerned Nassau Residents Record Scofflaw Drivers Rolling Through Stop Signs On Long Island
SYOSSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — One neighborhood on Long Island is rolling on drivers as they roll through, or even blow past, stop signs. Residents are recording the scofflaws on home video and calling police to issue tickets. On Elderberry Road in Syosset it’s more than a daily occurrence. Drone Force 2 Flew above a residential intersection which was a three-way stop with three obvious stop signs. Still, cameras caught drivers turning into or off South Oyster Bay Road, appearing to completely flout the law. “I literally have to sometimes stand in the middle just so people know that there’s a school bus here and children are crossing to get to the bus,” homeowner and parent Bhavin Manani said. The El-Miniawi family is worried about children and pets. “Cars come out of nowhere, sometimes my dog runs out of the gate,” Jessica said. Residents appealed to Nassau Police, who promptly responded. Even with multiple officers in plain sight, scofflaws never braked. In less than an hour, ten tickets were issued. Cops discovered distracted drivers, many who were pulled over said they didn’t see the signs or thought they had stopped. “It’s a town road, adjacent to a county light, next to a state parkway,” Nassau legislator Josh Lafazan said. “So what we’re going to have to do is get together, a coalition of elected officials.” But who will pay? Nassau police say written summonses are up 16 percent, so flashing lights, speed bumps, and speed cameras will all be considered. Running the stop sign, plus Nassau County’s public safety fee, could mean a ticket costs up to $330 plus three points on your license.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Dramatic video shows a broad daylight road rage incident playing out in real time at a red light in Brooklyn. The victim had just started driving for Uber and says he fought back because he thought the attacker was going to steal his car. Now he says he’s lucky he made it out alive. The video shows one of the men throwing air jabs with a box cutter at the side of a road in Greenpoint. The footage looks like something out of a movie, but the victim’s body proves the violence was all too real. “I have some hand injuries, elbow bruises right there, some hip injuries,” the man told CBS2’s Jessica Moore. The victim, who didn’t wish to be identified, says he was driving down McGuinness Boulevard near Norman Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when a reckless driver tried to cut in front of him. It all took a violent turn as soon as they stopped at a red light. “He got out of his car, started blaming me and taking swings at me so I defended myself,” the driver said. “He went back to his car, got a knife, and I was trying to not get cut.” After a few minutes, the suspect stole the Uber driver’s keys and took off in his car. The victim was pinned between two vehicles, sending his shoes flying into the air. “I knew it was a dangerous thing to hang onto a car but I was trying to not get the car taken,” the driver said. Police say it’s a miracle the victim wasn’t more seriously hurt as they continue looking for the driver of the white Hyundai with Florida license plates. The victim says he hopes police find him before he does. “I hope I don’t see him because I’m still really mad,” he said. “My neck could be cut open or I could be squished underneath a car.” Despite his best attempts to stop him, the victim says the suspect did get away with his keys. His car was towed, and he’s still waiting to get it back so he can get back to work.

ASHLAND, Ore. (CBS Local) – An Oregon woman’s encounter with a napping mountain lion in her home has become a social media sensation. Her explanation of how she got the beast out of the house is even more head-scratching. “This is wild,” Lauren Taylor posted on Facebook on July 8. The Ashland resident was able to photograph the full grown animal after it wandered into her home and decided to snuggle in for a nap behind Taylor’s couch. Taylor’s post, which has been shared over 24,000 times, credits her use of telepathy on the beast as the reason it left her house. Taylor claims she “sent telepathic pictures of the routes out of the house” while blinking at the cougar once it woke up and saw the Ashland woman. “Cats are extremely psychic and perceptive of energy and this lion could have been dangerous in an energy field of fear or anger,” Taylor explained. “A housemate had shouted and slammed a door upon seeing her and the lion was frightened, agitated, and determined to exit through a closed window. Once the energy shifted, she calmed down.” Telepathic powers weren’t the only trick Taylor used to lure the sleepy cougar away from her couch. In a video, which has been viewed over 700,000 times , Taylor kept beating on a drum from her staircase until the furry house guest found its way out. “We called in native ancestors’ support and started drumming,” Taylor wrote. “She roused and knew just what to do…. walking out through the open doors, through the yard, across the creek, and through the empty field behind us exactly as we had shown her.” Whether the Oregon woman has supernatural powers or not, she insisted that people not leave food out for wildlife like mountain lions and bears. She adds that her sleepy visitor was attracted to her house because of the water fountain in the backyard.
