‘2 Kids Don’t Just Come Up Missing’: Relative Of Missing Kern County Toddlers Speaks Out

CALIFORNIA CITY (CBSLA) — A relative of two missing toddlers from Kern County spoke out this week about the ongoing search for 4-year-old Orrin and 3-year-old Orson West. (credit: CBS) The two young brothers disappeared from the backyard of their adoptive parents’ home in California City on Dec. 21. There have been multiple searches in Bakersfield , where the boys lived with their adoptive parents, before moving to California City in September. Rosanna Willis, a biological relative of one of the boys, spoke to the Kern County Black Chamber of Commerce about the search . She said her gut feeling was that foul play is involved in the boys’ disappearance. “Two kids don’t just come up missing, especially in Cal City,” Willis said. “if you go out there and you look at the area, the neighbors, they see everything. Some of the neighbors there said they ain’t never seen kids.” Police say the boys’ adoptive parents are cooperating with the investigation. Since the boys went missing, money raised by several YouTubers have funded digital billboards offering a $122,000 reward for information leading to the boys.

Woman Killed In Collision At South LA Intersection

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – One driver was killed and a second critically injured in a collision in South Los Angeles early Friday morning. March 5, 2021. (CBSLA) The crash occurred in the 200 block of 43rd Street near Broadway at around 12:30 a.m. According to Los Angeles police, a car was traveling north on Broadway when in slammed into a car that was stopped at a traffic light. The impact sent the second car careening into several parked vehicles, police said. The driver of that car, described as a woman in her 40s, died at the scene. She was not identified. The driver that caused the crash was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries. Investigators are unsure if speed or street racing contributed to the crash.

Safer-At-Home Order Likely In LA County After Officials Report Record-High Daily COVID-19 Case Count

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — One day after releasing plans to nix in-person dining for three weeks, Los Angeles County reported another record-high daily number of cases. On Monday, 6,124 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed — by far the highest single-day total since the beginning of the pandemic. Public health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said that 1,500 of those cases were the result of a testing backlog from Sunday. But, even without those cases, the cases from Monday are still high enough to trigger yet another, stricter health order. According to thresholds the county released last week, a renewed Safer-At-Home order would be implemented if the county’s five-day average of new cases topped 4,500, or if hospitalizations topped 2,000. The order would last for at least three weeks. The details of the new “targeted” Safer at Home order are not clear. Health officials are expected to have a conversation with the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday about what the order will look like. However, health officials said last week that the order would generally allow only essential and emergency workers and those securing essential services to leave their homes. “I know for sure we’re not going back to all of the restrictions that were in place in the original Safer At Home order (issued at the beginning of the pandemic),” Ferrer said. “For one thing, we’ve learned a lot more. We have much more capacity on testing now, which allows us to do a better job quickly identifying people who are positive. And to everyone’s credit, this is a county that when we had a surge before was able to, in fact, get back to slowing the spread. “It did require us making some decisions about closing some sectors, but O think again this will be a conversation with the board,” she said. “And, you know, (I) appreciate that we have five supervisors… We’ve been working together since March and appreciate that this is something that will require deliberation and conversation so that we actually can mark a path forward.” After reaching a 4,000 five-day daily average of cases on Sunday, the county released a health order requiring in-person dining to shut down at restaurants, wineries and breweries as of 10 p.m. Wednesday. Although the Board of Supervisors signed off on these thresholds before they were released, Supervisor Kathryn Barger said on Monday that she plans to formally oppose the elimination of in-person dining. “These proposed measures by the Department of Public Health will further devastate local businesses and employees who have been asked to shoulder an unfair burden this year,” Barger said in a statement. Barger said that only 10-15% of positive COVID-19 cases are related to dining with someone who tested positive. Closing outdoor dining could also create the unintended consequence of prompting more private gatherings, she said. “Businesses have made incredible sacrifices to align with safety protocols to remain open in order to pay their bills and feed their families,” Barger said. “Increased case counts are not coming from businesses reopening, but from large gatherings where people aren’t wearing masks. We aren’t helpless in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and can protect ourselves and our neighbors by maintaining physical distancing and wearing face coverings.” Board member Janice Hahn also expressed concern about the ban on in-person dining. “While I know our case counts are growing rapidly, I would have rather discussed this measure openly during our Board of Supervisors meeting so that the public could understand the rationale behind it,” Hahn tweeted. “Some of these restaurants are barely hanging on. I hope this isn’t the last nail in their coffins. I wish we could have figured out a way to put in more restrictions rather than completely shutting down dining.” The new cases announced on Monday increased the county’s cumulative cases total to 370,636. The county also confirmed eight more deaths, raising the death toll to 7,446. Hospitalizations rose to 1,473 from 1,401 on Sunday. Hospitalizations have more than doubled since the beginning of October. Ferrer also noted that the surge in cases is not just the result of increased testing. She said the county’s rising rate of positive tests shows that the virus is spreading more rapidly. The county’s seven-day average daily positivity rate among those tested for the virus was 3.9% on Nov. 1, but it rose to 5.1% by Nov. 8 and stood at 7.1%. as of Saturday. Local Restaurants Fear Shutting Down As LA County Restricts Outdoor Dining Again

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA) — The Valley Inn in Sherman Oaks was hoping that outdoor dining could help them make it during the holiday season. Now, the owners fear they’ll have to throw out thousands of dollars worth of food. After reaching a 4,000 five-day daily average of cases on Sunday, the county released a health order requiring in-person dining to shut down at restaurants, wineries and breweries as of 10 p.m. Wednesday. Sophia Brodetsky and her family have invested tens of thousands of dollars to follow health guidelines to cling on to their restaurant. “We’ve spent over a thousand dollars on heaters,” Brodetsky said. But L.A. County’s decision to stop in-person dining, including outdoors, goes into effect hours before Thanksgiving. “To prepare everything for thanksgiving we have reservations,” she said. “We’re completely for outside dining. But on Monday, they’re already faced with the tough task of laying off employees due to the health order. “It’s really unfortunate to tell somebody, ‘Look, it’s not your fault. It’s just we can’t afford to keep you on and keep the restaurant open,’” he said. Gregg Smith owns three-restaurants in Pasadena that employ more than 200 workers who are worried about more lay-offs. “They’re devastated and they’re in tears and they don’t know what they’re going to do,” he said. Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said the pause is aimed at slowing down the spread of COVID-19, which has reached alarming levels. PASADENA (CBSLA) — The city of Pasadena announced on Monday that outdoor dining will be permitted to continue, even as restaurants across L.A. County prepare to shut down to comply with the new local health orders. “The City of Pasadena will continue to assess our COVID numbers and work closely with Huntington Hospital and give as much advance notice as possible if the City’s Order is going to change in any respect,” said city spokesperson Lisa Derderian. Derderian said that city leaders made a relatively unanimous decision to keep the restaurants open based on current numbers. She acknowledged the hardships many business owners have gone through during this pandemic, and said that this contributed to officials’ decision. “For every restaurant staff member, there’s a family behind that person,” Derderian said. LA County Board Of Supervisors To Again Debate Motion Calling For Removal Of Sheriff Alex Villanueva

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will again meet Tuesday to decide if it will move forward with a proposal examining whether it has the authority and ability to remove the elected Sheriff Alex Villanueva from his post. (Al Seib/Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) If approved, the motion calls on the board to gather together lawyers, its inspector general, the Civilian Oversight Commission and its acting CEO to look at options for removing or impeaching Villanueva before his term concludes in 2022. The board will also look into whether in the future the position should be appointed, like the Los Angeles Police Department chief, rather than elected. Titled “Report Regarding Options for Removing the Sheriff,” the motion was brought forward by Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Sheila Kuehl. The Board of Supervisors has been at odds with Sheriff Alex Villanueva since he was elected to the position in 2018. “Under the current sheriff, hard-fought vital progress is being undone, and community trust is rapidly eroding,” the motion states . “While the board has been able to navigate challenging times with previous sheriffs, this sheriff’s actions demonstrate the dire need to explore options for removing a sheriff who refuses oversight or, at a minimum, mitigating damages cause by unacceptable behavior.” Ridley-Thomas and Kuehl also argue that Villanueva has been unable to balance the sheriff’s department budget and has cut youth programs and eliminated the parks services bureau, actions that have also drawn criticism from the deputies’ union. A vote on the matter was postponed by Ridley-Thomas two weeks ago when it appeared there might not be sufficient support for it. The termed-out supervisor — who was elected last week to replace Herb Wesson on the Los Angeles City Council — said he was concerned his colleagues had not had sufficient time to consider the proposal. Supervisor Kathryn Barger said at the Oct. 27 meeting that she was in favor of voters deciding Villanueva’s fate. “Understand that I still stand by my belief that the sheriff is elected, and that in 2022, unless there’s (an)…effort to vacate that seat prior to that, that’s where the voters have a right,” Barger said. Supervisor Janice Hahn plans to oppose the motion because she believes that power is in the hands of the voters, according to spokeswoman Liz Odendahl. Other possibilities to be considered include pulling some of Villanueva’s responsibilities and appointing a county police chief. The board motion comes after the civilian oversight commission called for the sheriff’s resignation last month. Villanueva dismissed the commission’s vote, and accused the group of punishing him for investigating potential corruption. During his comments at the Oct. 27 meeting, Villanueva urged the supervisors to meet with him privately. “We are a county family and when there is collaboration we can do great things,” the sheriff said. “Let’s set aside the past and work out our differences…I look forward to finding common ground we can all stand together on in the interests of public safety and fiscal responsibility.” Though the union that represents rank-and-file deputies has had its own issues with the sheriff failing to confer with them about major staff transfers, it appears for now to support Villanueva. Covered California 2021 Open-Enrollment Gets Underway

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Enrollment for the Covered California health insurance marketplace has opened for 2021. The open enrollment period began Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 31, 2021. During open enrollment people can either buy a plan, renew or change their current plan, or enroll in Medi-Cal. About 1.5 million Californian’s are currently enrolled in health insurance through Covered California. 88% of those receive some form of federal or state subsidies. Back in August, the agency announced that premiums will rise by an average of only 0.6% in 2021, the lowest mark ever since the Affordable Care Act was established a decade ago. Without any subsidies, the monthly premium for a Covered California consumer averages $587. However, in 2020, the average Covered California consumer was paying only $130 per month because of the federal tax credits and state subsidies. In 2020, the rate rose by only 0.8% . That came after serious spikes of 13.2%, 12.5% and 8.7% respectively between 2017 and 2019. Over the past few years the California Legislature has made serious efforts to keep premium hikes low. In June of 2019, the legislature approved a bill which brings back the individual mandate and institutes a tax penalty for those who don’t buy health insurance.

Alex Trebek Donated 62 Acres Of Open Space Near Runyon Canyon

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Beloved “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, who passed away over the weekend , was a major advocate for conservation, as evidenced by a significant donation of land he made in the Hollywood Hills over 20 years ago. (Credit: MRCA) Many Angelenos may not be aware that, in the late 1990s, Trebek purchased 62 acres of land between Runyon and Nichols canyons and donated it as public space. The area, known as “Trebek Open Space,” was donated to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, a public agency which manages 75,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains. The land was purchased by Trebek for $2 million in 1998, according to the Los Angeles Times. It has trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riding. Trebek died Sunday at the age of 80 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Crews Battling Large Brush Fire Burning In San Dimas Foothills

SAN DIMAS (CBSLA) – A brush fire erupted in the San Gabriel foothills of San Dimas early Friday morning and quickly spread, but was not forcing any evacuations. A brush fire burns in San Dimas, Calif. Nov. 6, 2020. (CBSLA) The San Dimas Fire was first reported just after 4 a.m. in the area of San Dimas Canyon and East Golden Hills roads, near the border between San Dimas and La Verne. “Could see the flames pretty significantly, we have a two-story house, we heard the helicopters and all the action all over the place,” La Verne resident Mark Wellington said. It grew to 100 acres, burning uphill in steep terrain and heavy, dry brush, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department. Neighbors told CBSLA that the those hillsides have not burned in at least a decade. Fortunately, the fire was burning northwest and away from homes. Along with the LACFD, La Verne Fire Department and USFS crews also responded and were battling the blaze with the help of several water-dropping helicopters. (CBSLA) Forward progress was initially halted at around 9:30 a.m. with containment at 25%, USFS reported. However, the fire later crossed containment lines a little before noon. Homes were not threatened and no evacuations were issued. The wind were light, spelling favorability for firefighting crews. The San Dimas Canyon Golf Course was also serving as a buffer between the fire and the neighborhoods. “Any time you’ve got a break, or a green belt of vegetation, such as a golf course, that’s gonna give you that buffer, that space, so that’s definitely an assett,” L.A. County Fire Capt. Ron Haralson said. During the height of the fire, ash fell on the neighborhoods below. Nov. 6, 2020. (La Verne Police Department) “Every once in a while the fire envelops a tree, or several trees, and it flares up,” La Verne resident and CBSLA Digital Director BJ Dahl told CBS2 News This Morning by phone as he watched the flames burn in the hillsides. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries during the firefight and had to be airlifted out, the LACFD reported. There was no word on a cause. California has seen a historic number of wildfires since August, including the 115,000-acre Bobcat Fire which broke in early September the Angeles National Forest and destroyed at least 83 homes. Two large wildfires broke out on Oct. 26: The 14,300-acre Blue Ridge Fire in Corona, and the 13,400-acre Silverado Fire east of Irvine. Both forced tens of thousands of people to flee.
