NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is breaking barriers and inspiring many people, especially of the younger generation, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported Monday. Harris will become the first woman, first Black and first South Asian Vice President. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” Harris said in a speech after President-elect Joe Biden was projected to win the White House. “She’s done this and that means that we can do this, too,” said Sophia Anikewich, a 6th grader at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle . This generation is looking to Harris, who honored the women who came before her in the speech Saturday by wearing suffragette white. “I stand on their shoulders,” Harris said. MORE: Cheering, Celebrations Erupt In Streets Of New York After Joe Biden Projected To Win Presidency “The future builds on the past. Without these breakthroughs, you’re not gonna see more change,” said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. Walsh said Harris reaching the second highest office in the country is more than just symbolic. “It means that at that powerful table, where decisions are being made, there is somebody who sees the world through a gendered lens, and through a lens of race, and that will have an impact on policy,” Walsh said. “I think that no matter which side of the aisle that you align with, it’s impossible to deny how absolutely incredible this accomplishment was for all women across the board,” said Hailey Dorsainvil, a senior at Ursuline. It’s “herstory” in the making. 12 More Buildings To Reopen Near Site Of Flatiron District Steam Pipe Explosion
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Twelve more buildings that were evacuated following last week’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District are expected to reopen Tuesday. It’s been five days since the explosion shook the area of Fifth Avenue and 21st Street , shutting down streets and forcing people out of their apartments and businesses. “We really have no indication how long it will be before we can fully return and actually live in our homes again,” said displaced resident David Bass. Thursday’s blast sent asbestos-filled steam into the air, which has been the overriding concern in the area. Officials said air samples have tested negative and about half of the roughly 45 affected buildings have now been given the all clear following testing. But officials say a dozen buildings have tested positive inside for asbestos contamination. “We are constantly testing the air outside,” said NYC OEM Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “Before we let people re-enter the building, we are testing the air inside in all common areas of the building.” There was a tense meeting Monday night as city and Con Edison officials answered a firestorm of questions from those impacted. About 400 businesses have been affected. “My people, they all want to come back to work and live life normal again,” said store manager Danielle Storno. “As a restaurant, people are not going to come if the whole area is blockaded and looks like a war zone,” said restaurant owner Renee Typaldos. Bus traffic was allowed on Fifth Avenue Monday, but it’s unclear when the area will be back to business as usual. Con Ed says it is giving $500 to everyone displaced and those who need to file claims for things such as hotels can do that. The city is also providing live updates as buildings are cleared for reoccupation through information on the city’s website

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A weekend derailment is causing problems Monday morning for people taking the Long Island Rail Road. At least eight LIRR trains on the Babylon, Hempstead, Port Washington, Ronkonkoma, Far Rockaway and Oyster Bay branches will not be running as the MTA works to repair tracks that were damaged. Here are the anticipated cancelled/partially cancelled trains for the morning rush on Monday, July 23rd. pic.twitter.com/oDBiqzKABE — LIRR (@LIRR) July 23, 2018 The MTA says a non-passenger train was passing through the West Side Yard Saturday night when two middle cars derailed. The cause of the derailment is unclear and the MTA says it is investigating. But the incident damaged tracks that needed for trains to travel to and from the yard. Commuters say they were never notified. “They always like to speak of transparency, yet there never seems to be sufficient transparency,” said Medford resident John Gallaer. “Even when they get delays or anything they never mention it,” said Queens resident Sakshi Bajaj. Meanwhile, seven lines were already scheduled to have changes Monday morning as new summer timetabled take effect. For more information, click here .

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities say two robbery suspects have been arrested after a church van being chased by police crash into a NJ TRANSIT bus. Officials say the two suspects were being pursued following a crime spree involving three different vehicles, including the church van, in Newark. Police say two masked suspects had robbed two people at gunpoint within five minutes of each other in Newark around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said a third robbery involving the church van happened around 1:15 a.m. Friday. Shortly after, Maplewood police spotted the van and chased the vehicle back into Newark. During the pursuit, a Maplewood patrol car crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Colgate and Broom, but no one was seriously hurt. The Essex County Sheriff’s Department continued the pursuit. That’s when police said the van crashed into a NJ TRANSIT bus near Springfield Avenue and S. 17th Street in Newark. The bus and the van ended up on the property of the United House of Prayer For All People. “I came outside and I heard a boom and there were several passenger getting out of this van and the NJ TRANSIT bus,” neighbor Thomas Judd told CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis. “Newark police was on the scene very fast.” The driver and nine passengers on the bus were not seriously injured. BRONX, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A five-year-old is fighting the war on trash with the help of her aunt. Napkins, a cigarette box, wrappers, a bottle, all a normal sight just sitting on a sidewalk outside Seton Park. “Don’t litter anymore,” that’s a demand from 5-year-old Pepper Munoz. She’s a little Bronx girl with a big mission. “I need to protect the world from getting dirty,” said Pepper. It’s called the Karina and Pepper Mission. A project by two family members to spruce up the streets of their Riverdale neighborhood. This clean-up effort began about two weeks ago after Karina noticed her niece Pepper littering and asked her why. “She told me, ‘Karina, it’s because other people do it so I can do it too.’ That made me think no, that’s not acceptable, just because they do it doesn’t mean you have to do it,” said Karina. So she decided to teach Pepper a lesson by taking her out twice a week to pick up any trash they find along the way. The pair is putting up signs all over the neighborhood hoping people stop, read it, and take part in their mission. “We reside in this neighborhood and have noticed the overwhelming amounts of trash on our sidewalks lately and its unacceptable,” said Karina. “I feel happy we picked up the trash, but I feel angry that the people always have to throw the trash,” said Pepper. Pepper is learning hard work pays off because this trash turns into treasure. At the end of each week, her aunt gives her $5 to buy whatever she wants. “I buy chips and cookies,” said Pepper. But Karina says the best reward is when others join in. “I’ve actually had people contact me like you’ve motivated me, I actually started picking up in my neighborhood which is awesome,” said Karina. And teaching Pepper at a young age the powerful feeling of making a difference. If you’d like to join Karina and Pepper in trash pick up, they meet Mondays at 6 p.m. and Saturday’s at 11 a.m. in front of the CVS on West 235th street near Johnson Avenue in the Bronx. They can also be found on Facebook.
