SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Two Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldiers charged last month with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, shooting with intent, possession of and dealing in ganja, and taking steps preparatory to export ganja, were offered bail in the sum of $800,000 each when they appeared in the St Elizabeth Parish Court yesterday.

Residents yesterday blocked a section of Elletson Road to protest against Wednesday’s accidental shooting death of Nicholas Thomas, 20, in downtown Kingston. Thomas, who resided in Dunkirk, was hit when an off-duty Jamaica Defence Force soldier allegedly fired at a robber. He was pronounced dead at hospital. A woman was also injured in the shooting. The demonstrators yesterday called for the arrest of the soldier accused of firing the bullet that killed their community member.
