Scientists Detect Lake Below Surface Of Mars

(CNN) — A lake of liquid water has been detected by radar beneath the southern polar ice cap of Mars, according to a new study by Italian researchers from the Italian Space Agency, published Wednesday in the journal Science. Evidence was gathered by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding instrument, also known as MARSIS, on the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft. Between May 2012 and December 2015, MARSIS was used to survey the Planum Australe region, which is in the southern ice cap of Mars. It sent radar pulses through the surface and polar ice caps and measured how the radio waves reflected back to Mars Express. Those pulses reflected 29 sets of radar samples that created a map of drastic change in signal almost a mile below the surface. It stretched about 12.5 miles across and looked very similar to lakes that are found beneath Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets on Earth. The radar reflected the feature’s brightness, signaling that it’s water. “We interpret this feature as a stable body of liquid water on Mars,” the authors wrote in the study. The study authors ruled out any other causes for this brightness, apart from water-rich sediments. “This is just one small study area; it is an exciting prospect to think there could be more of these underground pockets of water elsewhere, yet to be discovered,” said Roberto Orosei in a statement. Orosei is the lead study author and principal investigator of the MARSIS experiment. Previously, there has been some suggestions about water on Mars, like droplets of water condensing on the Phoenix lander or as the possible cause of recurring slope lineae, which are seasonal dark streaks on Martian slopes. But there hasn’t been evidence of stable bodies of water until now, the researchers said. However, the presence of liquid water at the base of Martian polar caps was first hypothesized in a study 31 years ago. Given its location beneath the polar ice cap, the water is expected to be below the freezing point of water. But salts like magnesium, calcium and sodium already found on Mars could help the water to form a brine, which would lower the melting point to allow the lake to remain liquid. On Earth, lakes exist below the Antarctic ice sheet even though the mean annual temperature is around negative 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Brine lakes on Earth can remain liquid at 8.6 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the study. In comparison, salty ocean water freezes at 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Much like our own ice sheets, the polar ice caps change depending on the climate and act as archives for what has happened in the past. Learning more about these caps can reveal Mars’ climate history. “The long duration of Mars Express, and the exhausting effort made by the radar team to overcome many analytical challenges, enabled this much-awaited result, demonstrating that the mission and its payload still have a great science potential,” said Dmitri Titov in a statement, Mars Express project scientist. “This thrilling discovery is a highlight for planetary science and will contribute to our understanding of the evolution of Mars, the history of water on our neighbor planet and its habitability.” But how reliable are these detections? Outside experts have not been able to confirm these findings with other radar detections, like SHARAD, the Shallow Radar sounder onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. “We don’t see the same reflector with SHARAD, not even when we recently summed together [thousands] of observations to create CATSCAN-like 3-D views of both polar caps,” Nathaniel Putzig, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter SHARAD deputy team leader and senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, said in an email. “We’re hoping to carry out that same imaging process with the MARSIS data next. Long Island Native Ordained As Auxiliary Bishop For Diocese Of Rockville Centre

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Pope Francis has chosen a local Long Islander to help lead the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Msgr. Richard Garth Henning was born and raised in Nassau County and spent summers kayaking and swimming in the Great South Bay in Suffolk County. Locals say his approach is just what the church needs. Moments before his ordination, Henning credited his birthplace as a reason for attaining one of the highest honors in the Catholic church. “I am a local boy, I love Long Island,” he said. “It’s been my home, a great place of joy with my family and friends.” Henning grew up one of five children in Valley Stream, all of whom were products of Holy Name of Mary. He earned high honors at Chamindae High School while working on the student newspaper. The proud graduate of the class of 1982 was involved in nearly every after school activity. School President Brother Thomas Cleary calls him a “humble guy you take a walk with.” “You sense in a conversation he’s a spiritual thinker and a really knowledgeable, intellectual man,” Cleary added. Parishioners at St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington, the first parish Henning served in, say they knew the newly ordained auxiliary bishop was going places. “We’re so proud of him,” parishioner Katie Duhig said. “I’m proud to know him.” As a parish priest, Henning spoke Italian, French, Greek, and Hebrew but no Spanish until he was assigned in Port Washington, where parishioners helped him become fluent. “He’s deeply pastoral, a son — an adopted son of our beautiful Hispanic Catholic community,” Rockville Centre Bishop John Barres said. The Pope appointed Henning to the elevated position. 27 bishops joined Timothy Cardinal Dolan, who proclaimed the day one of “hope and promise.” Bishop Henning will now help lead one of the larges dioceses in the nation, consisting of one and a half million Catholics.

This Week In Golf: Molinari Tames Carnoustie In British Open Victory

By Sam McPherson Italy’s Francesco Molinari won the 2018 Open Championship on Sunday at Carnoustie. What is most impressive is how he did it, though his winning score of 8-under par does not do the effort justice. Molinari emerged from one of the most crowded leaderboards in golf major history to win his first major by two strokes and become the first Italian golfer to win one of the sport’s four grandest prizes. He earned the $1.89 million winner’s check by posting 69 on Sunday, the only golfer in the field to play a bogey-free round when it mattered most. Molinari parred the first 13 holes before making birdies at No. 14 and No. 18, emerging from a six-way tie at one point atop the leaderboard. He also stared down Tiger Woods, his playing partner, after the duo stood on the 11th tee with Woods, then at 7-under, in sole possession of first place. Molinari did not blink, as Woods dropped three strokes over the next two holes, and no other challenger mounted a sustained attack on a very difficult day at Carnoustie. Only 14 players broke par in the fourth round, and of those with an actual chance at winning on the back nine Sunday, Molinari’s 69 was the best. Among the leaderboard leaders, only Rory McIlroy, who shot 70 on the par-71 loop to finish in a four-way tie for second at 6-under, managed to break par. This is the second tournament victory for the 35-year-old Molinari this month, as he won the Quicken Loans National to start July off. In a span of just 21 days, he won Woods’ personal tournament and took the Open Championship from Woods, quite the achievement for a veteran pro who also won the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship in May. Considering Molinari sat at even par through the first two rounds, though, few could have seen this coming. There were a lot of golfers vying for this year’s British Open title, and most of them were American. Kevin Kisner was the first-round leader, shooting 66 to hold the lead at 5-under. Three players were tied for second just a stroke behind, and three more golfers shot 68 to stay two strokes off the lead. Tied for eighth place at 2-under par were former Open champions Zach Johnson (2015) and McIlroy (2014). Johnson posted 67 in Friday’s second round to move into a first-place tie with Kisner at 6-under after 36 holes. The trio of Tommy Fleetwood, Pat Perez, and Xander Schauffele stood one shot back, and two shots behind the leaders were Matt Kuchar and McIlroy, part of a five-way tie for sixth place. Again, at this point, Molinari was at even par after opening with a 70-72 effort. Saturday’s round truly mixed things up atop the leaderboard, as Kisner, Schauffele, and Jordan Spieth — the defending champion — shared the lead at 9-under par. Spieth posted a 65 to jump up 10 spots, while Woods moved up 23 spots after shooting a 66 to lurk four shots off the lead. Molinari posted the second-best round of the day (65) to find himself paired with Woods for Sunday’s fourth and final round. All of it was just a warm-up for Sunday’s final act, however, and Molinari went home with the Claret Jug by playing the best round of the day at Carnoustie. The three third-round co-leaders shot a combined 11-over on Sunday. > > MORE: This Week In Golf Next On The Tee: RBC Canadian Open The U.S. and Great Britain have held championships, and now it’s Canada’s turn: The RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey in Oakville, Ontario, is up next. This event dates back to 1904, and it is the third-oldest event on Tour after the aforementioned U.S Open and British Open. The defending champion is Jhonattan Vegas, who won the event last year in a playoff over Charley Hoffman after they both posted a 267 score for the tournament. Vegas also won the Canadian Open in 2016, making him a two-time defending champ. He will attempt to become the first three-peat winner in the event’s history, although others in the field might have some say. Brandt Snedeker (2013), Sean O’Hair (2011), and Chez Reavie (2008) are former champions scheduled to play, as is Jim Furyk, who won the event in back-to-back years himself once (2006, 2007). Kisner will try to make up for his fourth-round struggles in Carnoustie by playing in the RBC Canadian Open, and the world’s top-ranked golfer, Dustin Johnson, is in the field, too, after missing the cut last week. Two-time defending U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka will tee it off as well, along with fan favorites Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson. All these stars will be playing on a course known for being the first the legendary Jack Nicklaus designed all by himself. The loop is highlighted by the five Valley holes, No. 11 through No. 15, which offer impressive beauty and a lot of hazardous possibilities if the ball is hit poorly. The Glen Abbey Golf Course plays 7,253 yards long and is a par 72. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nancy Sinatra Sr., the childhood sweetheart of Frank Sinatra who became the first of his four wives and the mother of his three children, has died. She was 101. (Getty Images) Her daughter, Nancy Sinatra Jr., tweeted that her mother died Friday and a posting on her web page said she died at 6:02 p.m. but didn’t indicate where she died. “She was a blessing and the light of my life,” her daughter said. Attempts to reach representatives for Sinatra Jr. late Friday were unsuccessful. Nancy and Frank Sinatra had been dating as teenagers and married at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Feb. 4, 1939, just as Frank’s singing career was about to take off. Three years before marrying the former Nancy Barbato, he had landed a 15-minute radio show on local station WAAT. During the marriage’s early years, the Sinatras lived in a modest apartment in Jersey City, where their two eldest children were born. For a time she was employed as a secretary while her husband worked as a singing waiter. My mother passed away peacefully tonight at the age of 101. She was a blessing and the light of my life. Nancy Sinatra left Frank after his affair with actress Ava Gardner became public knowledge. Weeks after the pair’s divorce became final in 1951, Sinatra’s ex-husband married Gardner, while Sinatra went on to raise the couple’s three children: Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina. After the gossip over the divorce and Gardner marriage died down, Nancy Sinatra devoted herself to family and numerous celebrity friends, largely withdrawing from the spotlight. She not only outlived her husband, who died in 1998, but her son, who died in 2016. She is credited, under the name Nancy Barbato, on the Internet Movie Database with just two TV and film appearances, in her daughter Nancy’s 1975 concert film, “Nancy and Lee in Las Vegas,” and in 1974 on her friend Dinah Shore’s talk show. In later years she would become known as Nancy Sr., especially after daughter Nancy became a 1960s singing star in her own right with “These Boots Are Made For Walking” and other hit songs. She also remained friendly with her ex-husband, the latter being said to have put in requests over the years for pasta and other Italian food dishes she was known to be an expert at preparing. Battle Over Westchester Italian Ice Shop Gets Heated

NORTH CASTLE. N.Y. (CBSNewYork) —  Many in the town of North Castle say they’d rather deal with parking problems than a collapsing cliff. A popular Ralph’s Italian Ices is looking to buy a plot of land next door to expand their parking lot, but those who live by fear it will cause issues. “I spent the last eight years taking care of my parents, fighting to keep them at home, safe and as healthy as possible,” said resident Nora Kanze-Manuele. Now Manuele is fighting for the safety of her childhood home in North Castle. She says the backyard has naturally been caving in for years, but it’s a possible man made problem she is trying to avoid. One that is right behind her home: the new Ralph’s Italian Ices of North Broadway. “Many us have lived a long time in this neighborhood and then for someone to come in here for about a year and all of a sudden, create such havoc,” said Manuele. Manuele and her neighbors say if the shop owner buys the plot of land next door to the business to make it a parking lot, and hammers away at the large hill that separates their homes and the establishment, it could cave in. Just like the office on the other side of the property that had to stop construction. “There wasn’t enough parking, they started to dig into the cliff and the cliff came down,” explained Manuele. “It seems like it is going to erode,” said another resident, Gail Lombardi Norris. Someone who would be greatly impacted by this sale is another neighbor Betty Sanchirco. “For them to take that piece of property and have the potential owner cut into the back of my property, it would leave the edge of my backyard on a cliff,” said Sanchirco. Her backyard is right next to the land for sale, but we spoke to the owner of Ralph’s who right now says there is nothing to fear. “I really don’t know what they are worried about, there is so much there,” said owner Scott Rosenberg. The owner believes there is plenty of room between the houses and the land for sale. Promising he will even keep the popular pedestrian path that would be on his new land. “You have a geotech engineer to certify the structure, the mountain, to make sure it’s safe,” said Rosenberg. “Make sure it’s all in accordance to the town and city.” Home owners who live up high are thinking low of this business’s possible expansion which the city says he has the right to do. There will be a town hall meeting tomorrow where the owner of Ralph’s will be speaking with local leaders about the sale. If it goes well, he says he will submit a plan to them soon.
