2 Days After Breaking Heat Records, Southern California Expecting Rain, Snow, Gusty Winds

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Just two days after breaking several heat records, cold temperatures, rain, snow and strong, gusty winds are forecast for Southern California. Several cities saw their heat records broken Thursday, including Long Beach, which hit a high of 95 degrees, breaking the previous record high of 93 in 2012. In the Inland Empire, Palm Springs and Idyllwild both reached 98 degrees Thursday, breaking their previous records of 96 in. Thermal also broke its 1988 record of 79 degrees by reaching 80 on Thursday. Meanwhile, Riverside, San Jacinto, Woodland Hills and UCLA all tied their previous high temperature records. But temperatures will start to plummet Friday night thanks to a cold low-pressure system from Canada that is expected to bring rain and mountain snow this weekend. Saturday morning and afternoon rainfall is expected to be the heaviest and most widespread, with another round forecast for Sunday afternoon. Snow levels are also expected to drop as low as 4,000 feet by Sunday night. As much as 12 inches of snow could fall at higher elevations. A high surf advisory that starts at 4 p.m. has also been issued for Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Dangerous rip currents and waves as tall as 8 feet are forecast to pound the coasts all the way down to San Diego County this weekend. A wind advisory has also been issued for the San Bernardino Mountains, Victor Valley, and the deserts. Winds of 15 to 25 mph are forecast, and with gusts of up to 50 mph could blow around unsecure objects, take out tree limbs and cause power outages.

Soaring Temps Continue Into Friday For The Southland

LATEST 7-DAY FORECAST | RADAR LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Angelenos will get little relief Thursday as the heat wave which has engulfed the region since the beginning of the week is expected to continue into Friday. An excessive heat warning in effect since Monday has been extended through 8 p.m. Friday for several inland areas, including the San Fernando, San Gabriel, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains, inland Orange County and the Inland Empire. High temperatures will range from 98 to 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS IN ORANGE COUNTY “That high pressure system is still the dominant feature right now,” CBS2 Meteorologist Amber Lee said. “So that’s what’s going to pump in the hot, dry conditions. And it looks like that high will stay with us through about Saturday before it starts to get a little bit closer to the Four Corners region.” However, a deepening marine layer has brought a slight cooling to coastal cities and the Los Angeles metro area, where the excessive heat warning has been downgraded to a heat advisory for downtown L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu, the Hollywood Hills, Long Beach, Oxnard, Ventura and Camarillo. The heat advisory will last through 8 p.m. Thursday. The NWS forecast partly cloudy skies in L.A. County Thursday and highs of 78 in Avalon; 79 at LAX; 84 in Long Beach; 89 in Downtown L.A.; 92 on Mount Wilson; 96 in San Gabriel; 97 in Burbank; 98 in Pasadena; 106 in Saugus and Woodland Hills; and 108 in Palmdale and Lancaster. Sunny skies were forecast in Orange County, along with highs of 77 in San Clemente; 80 in Newport Beach; 81 in Laguna Beach; 90 in Anaheim and Irvine; 91 in Fullerton; 92 in Mission Viejo; and 95 in Yorba Linda. Another Heat Wave Expected In Southern California Monday

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Intense heat is once again expected in Southern California next week, after high temperatures shattered all-time records across the region just two weeks ago. CBS2/KCAL9 meteorologist Craig Herrera says the valleys, Inland Empire and High Desert could see temperatures between 105° and 112° beginning Monday. And anyone hoping to escape the heat at the beach may want to reconsider: coastal and mountain communities will likely see temperatures at or near 90°. Herrera says conditions will be “unusually hot” for late July and will come close to the record-breaking temperatures seen July 6. That day, Burbank and Van Nuys saw their hottest recorded temperatures of all time, at 114° and 117°, respectively. Monday’s heat wave is expected to last for at least five days and may extend into the weekend. The L.A. County Department of Public Health issued a heat alert for Monday and Tuesday in the Pomona area and the Antelope, Santa Clarita, San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys. It will be in effect Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles. Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, the county’s interim health officer, noted that children, the elderly and pets can be particularly susceptible to heat-related illness. He noted that even short periods of exertion in high heat can cause dehydration, cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke. (Photo by Frederic J. Angels Overcome 3-Run Deficit To Beat Mariners, 9-3

ANAHEIM (AP) — Kole Calhoun and Andrelton Simmons each had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Seattle Mariners 9-3 on Tuesday night. The Angels got 15 hits and overcame an injury to starting pitcher Garrett Richards, who left in the third inning with right forearm irritation. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday. Simmons, seeking his first All-Star appearance as one of five candidates in online balloting for the final AL roster spot, hit a go-ahead double in a four-run fourth. Calhoun and Albert Pujols both homered to lift a Los Angeles offense that needed a boost. The Angels have won three of their past four games. Seattle All-Star Mitch Haniger hit a three-run homer, his 18th of the season, in the first inning for a 3-0 lead against Richards, who allowed three consecutive hits to begin the game. He exited in the third while pitching to Nelson Cruz. Richards’ velocity was down. After a 92 mph pitch, a trainer and Angels manager Mike Scioscia went to the mound, and the right-hander quickly walked off the field. Richards has been plagued by injuries during his career and this was just his second start since coming off the disabled list after being sidelined by a left hamstring strain. He struck out eight in his previous outing. Richards gave up three runs and four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Minor Quake Strikes Between Ontario, Chino Airports

ONTARIO (CBSLA) — A minor earthquake struck Ontario early Tuesday morning, centered almost right between the Ontario and Chino airports. The magnitude-3.5 quake shook the area at about 4:10 a.m. It was felt most strongly in the Inland Empire area, but there were reports it was felt as far west as Los Angeles, 40 miles away, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There have been no reports of injuries or damage.
