TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey woman who survived a crash that killed her husband and four daughters on a Delaware highway is speaking out for the first time. The crash happened earlier this month as the family from Teaneck was headed home from a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland. Authorities said a pickup truck heading in the wrong direction on Route 1 in Delaware collided with their minivan, killing 61-year-old Audi Trinidad and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. Their mother, Mary Rose, was the only one to survive. Authorities say the four girls were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. “I lost my family last July 6 because of a man in a truck crossed a wide grassy median and struck our car coming in the wrong direction,” Mary Rose said at a news conference Friday. “He is still walking free and I have to bury my husband and four daughters.” So far, criminal charges have not yet been filed in the case. Mary Rose said Friday that she wants justice for her family and to see the driver of the pickup “criminally prosecuted.” “All my broken bones and injuries will heal but not the unbearable pain my heart,” she said. “Now that they’re all gone, I have nothing to look forward to but justice for them.” Attorneys for the family say they’ve been told the investigation into the crash is “complicated” and may take a few months. Mary Rose, who spent her life helping others as a nurse, won’t be able to hold a funeral for her family until she’s well enough to attend. “She’s got a broken left arm with infections, both knees are fractured with surgery, she has fractured ribs, fractured shoulders and a fractured right hip,” lawyer Diane Lucianna said. Doctors say it may be weeks before she walks again.

HOWELL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A couple in New Jersey flew halfway across the world to save a furry friend. They traveled more than 6,000 to help their sick dog, a 8-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Remy. Owner Cathy Cuni says her beloved pooch is always a ray of sunshine, but back in September she was diagnosed with a form of degenerative heart failure. Remy had end-stage mitral valve disease, or MVD, and there’s no cure. Given only six to 18 months to live, doctors told the Cunis only one man could perform the necessary heart bypass surgery that could help Remy live longer. The only catch? That man’s in Japan, and his surgery costs $17,000. With travel and other circumstantial expenses the total bill approached $25,000. The immense cost would force Cuni and her husband to borrow from their 401(k) and take a month off work. With all the testing, paperwork, and required quarantine it took nine months for the couple to get clearance to see Dr. Masami Uechi. “She’s my baby, but she’s a responsibility that I chose to take on,” Cuni said. “She wasn’t born and said ‘I’m going to the Cuni’s house’.” Following a 14-hour flight, Remy underwent 7 hours of surgery. The procedure was a complete success. “Don’t give up hope,” Cuni said. “Surgery is not for everyone but there are things you can do by being informed to prolong your dog’s life.” MVD is relatively common in small dog breeds, and normally hits after the age of eight. Cuni says the Mighty Hearts Project, a group of dog owners who also opted for MVD surgery, really helped support and educate the family every step of the way. “She can now go on and live out the rest of her years with us the rest of her natural life,” Cuni said. Her and her husband also own three rabbits and three other dogs, so the hope is their furry family has many more years together.

VAN NUYS (CBSLA) — Police are investigating after a Los Angeles woman was harassed on the road and followed home by an angry driver. It’s a story that Lynn Ferguson would like to forget — when a simple shopping trip turned into a nightmare. Ferguson was on her way from the store when she signaled to merge into a left lane on Van Nuys Blvd. It was all captured on her dashcam. “He pulled in front of me and I thought he was doing it for a laugh,” she remembered. But it seems she upset the driver of a black Honda Civic, who sped past her. At one point the driver swerves then stops in the middle of the road, preventing Ferguson from getting around. He’s seen gesturing her to come forward. Ferguson’s concern then grew when she says she saw the driver reach for something. “If I had pulled up beside him, what would he have done?” Ferguson asked. Ferguson made the fastest turn she could to head home and the driver sped off. She thought it was over. Then, she realized he had followed her home. When her husband retrieved the dashcam video, he was shocked. “He got out of the car, he threw a rock at my wife’s car. I was dumbfounded and angry and shouted and he quickly got in his car and drove off,” Mark Tweddle said. Ferguson still has no idea what she did to cause someone to get so angry, but she’s grateful her kids weren’t in the car and her husband was home. She worries now if the driver could do this to her, who could be next? “It was me yesterday,” she said. “There will be someone else tomorrow. There may even be someone else today.” The LAPD is investigating the case.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Local) – A senior citizen in Florida is facing serious criminal charges after he was caught on video allegedly trying to attack his neighbor with a tractor. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says 72-year-old Howell Morris got into an argument with Scott Lynch in mid-June. Lynch’s wife captured the property dispute on cellphone video before calling police. The Sheriff’s Office released those 911 calls to WJXT-TV on July 9. “When you say he came after your husband with his tractor, did he chase him down?” the 911 dispatcher asked. “Yeah. He chased him down on his tractor and my husband had to run,” Lynch’s wife replied. The tractor driver was released on bond the next day and has been ordered to stay away from his neighbors.
