SENIOR Public Relations and Marketing Manager at the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) Richard Jones says the agency will begin construction of the Bernard Lodge housing development in St Catherine, in 2019. In an interview with JIS News, Jones said the development will include 1,600 studio and single bedrooms, detached and semi-detached units.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s peak rental season in New York City, but lots of living options comes with lots of problems especially if you don’t do your homework. Sabin Wizman thought her one bedroom with a view of the East River and modern finishing was a steal. With assurances from her realtor she negotiated the building down to $4,000 a month. When she moved in in May, she ran into a rude awakening. “As you open your windows you have East Side Heliport that runs 12 hours a day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at times up to four helicopters,” Wizman said. “I was told by the management here that they’re not required to let me know that there’s a helipad.” She says the building told her it was her job to investigate before hand, and if she wanted to get out she’d have to pay for two months after she moved out. Real estate attorney Adam Leitman Bailey says the leasing company is well within their rights. “Landlords aren’t required to tell you anything,” he told CBS2. “I recommend to clients before signing lease that they stand in front of the door for a half-hour, greeting other tenants and asking them how they like the building.” Environment is only one of the many things to consider, and Leitman Bailey says legally it’s on you to do the homework. By law, a building does have to disclose whether there were bed bugs in the apartment but only in the last year. The Department of Housing Preservation and Development has a free database that discloses complaints and violations like leaks, bed bugs, and heating problems. The Department of Buildings has a database that lets you know about construction planned in the area and elevator issues. “Go during work hours, after work hours, morning, evening, and the weekends,” real estate broker Anthony Lolli said. “You really want to cover the full gamut.” “There’s situations where people move into buildings they don’t know, there’s a homeless shelter down the block, and maybe a lot of people coming in and out,” real estate broker Carlos Angelucci said. Otherwise, you could be out of luck. Experts say it’s currently a renter’s market, so take time before you sign. There’s always another apartment around the corner.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — In a bombshell for local politics, former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut is urging voters in the Bronx and Queens to turn their backs on surprise Democratic congressional primary winner Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and send Joe Crowley back to Washington. Stunned by her election night victor over the long-time congressman, Ocasio-Cortez was stunned once again by the scorching attack from Lieberman. It proves becoming the “it” girl of New York politics has its ups and downs. Lieberman used an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, saying Ocasio-Cortez is “… likely to hurt Congress,” “… would make it harder for Congress to stop fighting and start fixing problems,” and “… is more Socialist than Democratic. Her dreams of a new federal spending would bankrupt the country or require very large tax increases.” Lieberman, appealing to residents of the 14th congressional district to vote for Crowley in November on the Working Families Party line, is also critical of her foreign policy views. Ocasio-Cortez upset many during an interview last week when she called Israel an “occupation” force over the Palestinian territories. “I also think that what people are starting to see at least in the occupation of Palestine is just an increasing crisis of humanitarian condition,” Ocasio-Cortez said on PBS’s Firing Line. “I think what I mean is that the settlements are increasing… Palestinians are experiencing difficulty in access to their housing and homes.” Still not running. — Joe Crowley (@JoeCrowleyNY) July 18, 2018 In response to Lieberman, Crowley tweeted that he’s “Still not running,” but sources in the Working Families Party tell CBS2 that after his defeat in the Democratic primary Crowley refused entreaties to get off their ballot line. They might secretly hope that Ocasio-Cortez falters. “Joe Crowley loses nothing by listening to Joe Lieberman,” political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said. “Frankly if he chose to run, the money would be there and he might even win the race.” A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez says he’s taking Crowley at his word that he’s not running. “The race is over,” according to the spokesperson. The Working Family Party says that even though Crowley is on their ballot line, they will be “going all out to elect Alexandria.”

Joe Lieberman Pens Op-Ed Urging Voters To Back Joe Crowley Over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The NYPD released video of two men wanted for shooting two people in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage shows a man in a white t-shirt pacing near the Brownsville Houses on Stone Avenue on July 3rd. The man then hands what appears to be a gun to another man in a black sweatshirt. Police say that man fired several shots at a group inside a park at the housing complex. A man and woman, both 19, were shot in the leg and rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74682).
