Health Experts: Don’t Give In To Pressure To Host Or Attend In-Person Thanksgiving Dinners

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Centers for Disease Control and other health organizations are warning against air travel this Thanksgiving during the coronavirus pandemic. But what do you do if you’re getting pressure from family members to come over anyway? For some, annual traditions are hard to break, even in the middle of worldwide health crisis. “They would like to come and eat and I was like nooooo, you can’t,” Lynette Johnson told CBS2’s Alice Gainer on Monday. I love you so much that I don’t want to put you at risk,” psychologist Dr. Alexandra Stratyner told Gainer. You know, we’re living through history right now,” Stratyner added. “I’m staying here at my college and just probably gonna eat in my dorm room, probably FaceTime my family,” student Quincy Harmon said. Taylor Fellman was at LaGuardia Airport on Monday night feeling nervous about flying home to North Carolina for Thanksgiving. “I have this little spray in my backpack I’m spraying the seat with,” Fellman told CBS2’s Ali Bauman. “I’m really excited to see my family, but I just don’t want to travel.” “I just got tested. I know I have antibodies, so that makes us a little more comfortable about getting together,” traveler Jackie Lee added. “I got tested a couple days ago just to make sure,” traveler Trevor Jainarian said. In Hell’s Kitchen, Adam Feld was waiting in line for a test and told Bauman it’s the only way his mother will let him come home for Thanksgiving. “If you want to come home get the test or, I’m sorry you’re not able to come and you’re gonna be watching football on Hulu TV from your apartment,” Feld said, describing what his mom told him. For those still planning to travel, the CDC is offering the following advice: Check travel restrictions Get your flu shot Wear a mask Stay six feet apart from people Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer Avoid touching your mask, eyes, nose and mouth. Others more bluntly advise, “Stay home and be thankful you’re still alive,” one man said. Officials are worried about a COVID-19 spike after Thanksgiving, but hope those planning to travel will change their minds. Experts warn testing could provide a false sense of security because of the 14-day incubation period. “Let’s say I was infected yesterday. I could get tested tomorrow, I’d be negative. I could travel on Wednesday and by Thursday or Friday I could be contagious, passing it to other people,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health. The daily positive test rate is now at 6.37%. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Business owners already struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic are getting hit again, this time with summonses and fines for not following COVID-19 guidelines. Lorraine Gericke, manager of Best Tress Hair Salon, was told by a city inspector she was doing it all wrong, using a notebook to write down customers’ temperatures and information for contact tracing. “They’re slapping us with a $1,000 fine, which is so unfair,” she told CBS2’s Dave Carlin. The penalty is because they did not use city forms instead. “We were not aware that we needed these,” Gericke said. He said the inspector told him, and just one day later, another inspector returned and fined him $1,000. “They don’t give me the time to do that, you know?” Chen said. On one block of Dry Harbor Road in Middle Village, Queens , at least four business were hit with fines and, in some cases, multiple fines. This is what the city has been doing even before, pre-COVID, they were doing this to the businesses, putting layer upon layer of regulations on them,” Holden said. Realtor Christopher Tscherne was fined for not having six-foot social distance markers on his floor. “If an agent is going to come around and say I need to have stickers, why don’t they have a few stickers in their car?” he said. Tscherne and other business owners are begging the city to stop hurting the little guy and help them comply instead. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — When voters cast their ballots in the Bronx , many had COVID-19 on their minds. The pandemic has disproportionately impacted the borough, which already had its share of challenges, CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported Thursday. “We’re not okay. No one is ready. No one is okay. Everyone is struggling,” said Jocelyne Rojas of Bronxworks Food Pantry. The 26-year-old was furloughed from her once-full-time retail job. She’s back to work, but only 15 hours a week. “What I make is not enough for me to feed myself, try to feed my mother, maintain an apartment. You still have your phone bill,” Rojas said. It tripled the number of pantry locations to 12 and extended hours and days of service, including at the Morris Senior Center. “For the days that we’re open for the general population, we’ve seen 80% of the people that are coming in now for this particular pantry are all new to us,” said Eileen Torres, Bronxworks’ executive director. City and state assistance that includes eviction and utility moratoriums have been helpful, but many fear what will happen when that’s lifted. “Shortly after New York City became the epicenter of the pandemic, the Bronx really becomes the epicenter of the epicenter,” Torres said. COVID-19 has been particularly deadly in the borough, with its dense population, large number of essential workers and high instances of pre-existing conditions. “I’ve lost about eight of my friends,” resident Lezrette Hutchinson said. Like many seniors, Hutchinson mourns alone, struggling with the forced social isolation. “I’m very depressed. I’m very depressed behind it,” Hutchinson said.
