Americans Line Fifth Avenue For Annual Veterans Day Parade

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — On Sunday, thousands lined the streets of Manhattan to honor the men and women who have fought for our country. Veterans had been participating in events all week to acknowledge the sacrifice of so many of their fellow soldiers. Everything led up to the annual Veterans Day Parade up Fifth Avenue, where the crowds and military personnel waved flags to honor all those who have served. Veterans Day Parade (Credit: CBS2) This year, veterans celebrated the 100-year anniversary since the end of World War I. More than 300 floats and military vehicles took part in the parade, with an estimated 30,000 spectators lining the route. “We just want to be around each other and highlight the fact that we have our nation’s finest putting their lives on the line over and over again for all of us to be free,” Florent Groberg, a veteran and Medal of Honor, recipient told CBS2’s Clark Fouraker. He received the Medal of Honor after being injured by a suicide bomber during his second tour in Afghanistan. On Saturday, Groberg took part in a Ruck Walk. Participants walked between eight and 50 miles with a heavy rucksack — like the ones used in the military — on their backs in honor of service men and women. He shared with CBS2’s Dave Carlin a message for all Americans. “Appreciate the country that we live in and appreciate our Veterans, everything they put on the line to serve our nation,” Groberg said. “The brotherhood and sisterhood that they form and the love that we have for our country and our flag and for each other, so God bless America.” The walkers visited war memorials throughout the city and ended at the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan. “We started at the parade starting point at Madison Square Park, made our way down and visited all the war memorials in Lower Manhattan. So, we paid tribute to those who came before us,” veteran Mark Otto said. The parade started at 26th Street and Fifth Avenue and traveled more than a mile up to 46th Street. Veterans Day parade route (Credit: CBS2) The event never fails to be rousing and magnify the patriotism of everyone involved, Carlin reported. “It’s so important that they remember veterans and the allegiance to the flag,” said Margaret Van Allen of Derby, Connecticut. The thank yous — the quiet ones and the ones loudly shouted from rooftops — were appreciated by veterans, including Bedford-Stuyvesant’s Joseph Austin, who served in the 1970s. “Fort Knox, Kentucky; Indiana; Berlin, Germany,” Austin said of places he was stationed, later adding, “I do this every year and I love it.” “This is like my birthday, my reunion, my anniversary, whatever you want to call this is my special day of the year,” added Rodney Garcia, an Air Force veteran from Shelton, Connecticut. “We love our troops, we love our country and we understand that freedom is not free,” Groberg added. Before the parade began, there was a wreath-laying ceremony at the Eternal Light Monument at Madison Square Park. It was specifically timed on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in remembrance of Armistice Day — the end of World War I.

Group Rucks To 9/11 Memorial In Honor Of Veterans

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Many of our nation’s heroes will be marching through Manhattan on Sunday for the annual Veterans Day parade. On Saturday, many of those men and women took part in a walk carrying rucksacks similar to the ones used by the military. The group began at Madison Square Park and ended at the 9/11 Memorial, stopping at all the war memorials along the way. The walkers included a Medal of Honor recipient, who will be the grand marshall in Sunday’s parade. “Every time I’m in New York, we make a stop here,” Florent Groberg said. “It’s always crowded, and just showcases the reality of this country. That we love our troops, we love our country, and we understand that freedom is not free.” The Veterans Day parade kicks off at 11 a.m. at Madison Square Park, and travels up Fifth Avenue to 53rd Street.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – More streets opened up and nine buildings were cleared for re-occupancy Sunday as hazardous debris cleanup continued in the area around Thursday’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron district. Many people evacuated were happy to return home for the start of the work week, while others wondered about when they’d be allowed back and how they’d be compensated for their displacement. Photos: Massive Steam Pipe Explosion In Manhattan’s Flatiron District Firefighters sprayed the facades of buildings along Fifth Avenue to wash off any asbestos from the steam-pipe explosion earlier this week, and many tenants are now allowed to return to their homes. The Department of Environmental Protection and NYC Health Department are conducting the interior investigations. The blast near 21st Street and Fifth Avenue sent asbestos-filled steam and pieces of the pipe flying. Mayor’s spokesperson Eric Phillips tweeted Sunday that “on compensation from ConEd for displaced steam pipe explosion residents, the Mayor agrees that $500 will likely not be good enough. We’ll be pushing ConEd to up that payment.” The $500 doesn't preclude anyone from submitting a claim for other related expenses. It was to provide immediate help to those who were displaced. On Sunday, city officials reported 18th, 19th, and 22nd Streets were again open to pedestrian and street traffic, while 20th Street was only reopened to residents. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said there was progress, but it shouldn’t be rushed if it meant compromising anyone’s safety. “I want to make sure it’s done correctly,” she said. “I know it’s really hard when you’re out of your home and your business but you don’t wanna be sick.” Crews on Saturday collected the water and filtered it before releasing it into catch basins. The difficult cleanup was made even riskier by the heavy rains. Workers used sandbags to line the contaminated area in hopes of preventing dangerous material from seeping out into storm sewers. The city is providing live updates as buildings are cleared for reoccupation. A community briefing is scheduled for Monday night for neighbors affected by the steam main break. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The rain is creating a difficult situation for crews in the Flatiron District as they try to contain the hazardous debris from Thursday’s steam pipe explosion . The blast near 21 st Street and Fifth Avenue sent asbestos-filled steam and pieces of the pipe flying. “As a result of the steam main rupture, we had a lot of debris that went up into the air coated some of the buildings. Some are still without gas or hot water; many are unable to go home at all. “Incredibly frustrated,” one person said. “It’s very inconvenient.” Residents showed up to a Red Cross pop-up center nearby, wondering when things will be back to normal. “It’s been a holdup for everybody’s life right now,” said Lemasters. The city says people who live and work in the area may not be able to get back in until Monday at the earliest.

Cleanup Underway After Flatiron District Steam Pipe Explosion

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Cleanup is underway Friday after a massive steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District. The high-pressure pipe burst without warning just before 7 a.m. Thursday on Fifth Avenue and 21st Street, ripping apart the pavement and sending plumes of white steam into the air. “A huge white plume of smoke emerging from somewhere underground,” said area employee Renee Lovett. “Sounded like someone hosing down our window,” said Daniela Caso. “It’s scary and unsettling.” Authorities testing the pipe, which was built in 1932, confirmed asbestos in the area. Nearly 50 buildings were evacuated and decontamination tents were set up for first responders and those who live and work in the area. “There’s going to be a thorough assessment to make sure all the buildings are clean and safe,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday. With bags in hand, some New Yorkers were forced out of their homes while other decided to get out of town. “We’re trying to leave for the weekend and get away from this mess,” said resident Staberos T. “I just got back. I feel a little scratchy in the throat,” said Erica Tarnoff. Barricades are now set up all over the area so getting in or out is no easy task as businesses remain closed until further notice. “If many of them have to be closed for multiple days, that’s a huge loss of business impacts,” said Jennifer Brown with the Flatiron 23rd Street partnership. Closures include the area between 23rd Street, Park Avenue South, 19th Street and Sixth Avenue. The M1, M2, M3 and M55 buses are also being detoured to Seventh Avenue.
