Angels Sink The Mariners, 11-5

ANAHEIM (AP) — Rookie Francisco Arcia had a homer and six RBIs, giving him a major league-record 10 RBIs in two career games, and the Los Angeles Angels rolled to an 11-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. Arcia made his major league debut Thursday against the White Sox and hit his first career home run while driving in four runs. After not playing Friday, he topped that Saturday with a third-inning homer and run-scoring doubles in the second and fifth innings. The previous record for RBIs in two career games was nine by Joe Cunningham of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954. Cunningham was also the only player to have at least four RBIs in each of his first two career games until Arcia did it as well. Arcia is the first Angels rookie with at least six RBIs in a game since Adam Kennedy had eight in 2000. Mike Trout also homered for the Angels, delivering his 29th of the season off Felix Hernandez in the first inning. Arcia and Ian Kinsler each had three hits for the Angels. Nelson Cruz hit two home runs for the Mariners, his third multi-homer game this season and the 26th of his career. His 49 career home runs against the Angels are tied for second most with Rafael Palmeiro. Alex Rodriguez hit 70 against the Angels. The Mariners are 3-4 since the All-Star break and have lost eight times in their last 11 games, with three of those defeats coming against the Angels. Seattle’s Guillermo Heredia hit a home run in the eighth inning, his fourth. Arcia had just 25 minor league home runs over 12 seasons in the Yankees, Marlins and Angels organizations. He became the first Angels player to hit home runs in his first two career games. Angels starter Jamie Barria (6-7), who had lost six consecutive decisions, gave up two runs on five hits over six innings to earn his first win since June 1. The rookie opened the season 5-1 before losing six times over his next seven starts. Hernandez (8-9) gave up seven runs on six hits with two walks over 2 2/3 innings and has lost both of his starts since coming off the disabled list because of lower back stiffness. Hernandez has given up 11 runs on 11 hits over 7 2/3 innings in his last two outings. The Angels have won four consecutive games for the first time since winning six in a row from June 3-9. Gonzalez Goes 7, Freitas Homers As Mariners Top Angels 3-0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Marco Gonzalez pitched seven sharp innings, David Freitas hit his first major league home run and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 on Wednesday night. Gonzalez (10-5), who retired his first 10 batters, gave up just two hits and struck out four without issuing a walk. He not only earned his seventh victory since May 17, he became the 10th pitcher in Mariners history to reach 10 wins before the All-Star break. Freitas, who had been hitless in seven at-bats since being recalled July 5, went deep in the third against starter Jaime Barria. It was Freitas’ 32nd career game, 26 of which have been with the Mariners. Barria (5-6) gave up three runs and five hits in five-plus innings with five strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander has lost his last five decisions, including the past two to the Mariners. The Mariners have won 11 of 15 games and 18 of their last 29. They also improved to 27-18 on the road. Seattle shortstop Jean Segura, who found out Wednesday he was added to the American League All-Star team as the result of online balloting, reached base twice. He doubled and was hit by a pitch on the left arm. The Angels did not have a baserunner until the fourth inning when Andrelton Simmons hit a comebacker off Gonzalez’s left leg for a single. Mike Trout followed with a single to center before Gonzalez retired his next 11 batters. Alex Colome pitched the eighth inning for the Mariners, and All-Star closer Edwin Diaz worked a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 36th save. After Freitas gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the third, Segura doubled leading off the fourth and Mitch Haniger was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch from Barria put both runners in scoring position, Nelson Cruz delivered a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Cruz, selected to the AL All-Star team this week, has 20 extra-base hits over his last 39 games. TRAINER’S ROOM Mariners: C Mike Zunino (bruised left ankle) should be ready to return to the active roster after the All-Star break, according to manager Scott Servais, and has already started throwing again but is not yet running. … RHP Erasmo Ramirez (right lat strain) threw a 25-pitch bullpen at Class A Everett and will advance to 40 pitches before starting a minor league rehab assignment. … RHP Dan Altavilla (right elbow flexor strain) has started to play catch but is not yet throwing from a mound. Angels: RHP Garrett Richards was diagnosed with damage to his ulnar collateral ligament and was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Richards will decide on surgery or a more conservative rehabilitation process. … RHP Shohei Ohtani (elbow), already back on the active roster as a designated hitter, will be re-evaluated July 19 in an exam that could determine if he can begin the rehab process to make a return to the mound. UP NEXT Mariners LHP James Paxton (8-3, 3.49 ERA) will pitch Thursday on normal rest, moving into the rotation spot left unoccupied when RHP Felix Hernandez (back soreness) went on the 10-day DL. Angels LHP Tyler Skaggs (6-5, 2.64), who had a 0.84 ERA over 32 innings in five June starts, is expected to come off the DL after recovering from a groin strain. SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Herrmann hit his first home run for Seattle and Marco Gonzales pitched six solid innings to lead the Mariners to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. Gonzales (9-5) gave up five hits while striking out seven in a 102-pitch outing. The lone run he gave up was Kole Calhoun’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1. In the fifth, Guillermo Heredia’s line drive over Justin Upton’s head in left field for an RBI double gave Seattle the lead back at 2-1. In the seventh inning, Herrmann’s solo blast off reliever Miguel Almonte carried deep into the right-field bleachers. Dee Gordon tripled into the right-field corner with two outs, and Jean Segura greeted reliever Cam Bedrosian with a high-chopping RBI single to third baseman David Fletcher to extend Seattle’s lead to 4-1. Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth to lock up his major league-leading 34th save. The Mariners have not lost a home series since May 6, when they dropped two of three games to the Angels. They are 6-0-3 during that span. Angels starter Jaime Barria (5-5) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings in the loss. HERNANDEZ BACK ‘BETTER’ Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez insists he feels much better before his scheduled start Friday against Colorado than he did nearly a week ago. Hernandez tweaked his back during a workout in Baltimore. It tightened on him before his start Saturday against Kansas City – one in which he surrendered three earned runs before recording an out in a 6-4 victory. “There isn’t anything structurally wrong. It’s just tight,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. With the help of heat and ice packs, and more stretching, Hernandez’s back has felt better this week. He even threw an abbreviated bullpen session. “I am better today – more loose,” Hernandez said. “I will be fine.” BIRTHDAY BOY What did Japanese star Shohei Ohtani get on the day of his 24th birthday Thursday in Seattle? He got a seat on the bench against Gonzales, a left-hander. With Albert Pujols serving as the designated hitter, Jefry Marte got the start at first base after being activated from the 10-day disabled list earlier in the day. “We’ve got Marte back who we like against left-handed pitchers,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “Shohei will definitely get his looks. He is fine.” Ohtani struck out in the ninth inning as a pinch hitter against Diaz. ROSTER RESHUFFLING Angels: It appears that shortstop Andrelton Simmons and center fielder Mike Trout might remain the Angels’ 2-3 hitters for the time being.
