( CBS Baltimore ) — The AFC North remains the most competitive division in football, with three likely playoff contenders and a Cincinnati Bengals team that can beat anyone in a given week. They’ll get their first crack at the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday. The Cleveland Browns welcome back running back Nick Chubb, who should be able to do some damage against a Houston Texans defense that can’t stop anyone. The Baltimore Ravens, meanwhile, will look to work through a few issues on offense against the New England Patriots, who have quite a few issues of their own. Rick Ritter, CBS Baltimore anchor and host of the Ravens’ ‘Purple Pregame’ show, breaks down AFC North matchups for Week 10. All times listed are Eastern. Houston Texans @ Cleveland Browns, Sunday, November 15 @ 1:00 p.m. (FOX) The Texans defense is among the worst in the NFL. And against the run, they are the absolute worst, allowing 159.5 yards per game. According to Ritter, “I don’t think anybody in the NFL, jumping over to the defense real quick, is scared of that Texans D. Going into last week’s game against Jacksonville, they were giving up 31 points per game, which is just hard to believe.” An explosive Browns offense should be able to move the ball at will, especially with Nick Chubb returning from injury. “It seems likely they’re going to be getting Nick Chubb back, which is a huge addition to that offense,” says Ritter. “When Chubb is healthy and Kareem Hunt is healthy, it’s hard to argue that there’s a better running game in the entire league. Those two just go together so well.” > > READ: Fantasy Football Start Or Sit Week 10: ‘Jared Goff Has Top Five Potential’ Against Seahawks The Browns passing game might be a story of addition by subtraction. “We talk about Odell Beckham going out for the season with that injury,” says Ritter. “Baker [Mayfield] actually looked better without Beckham. So can he keep that up if he doesn’t have to worry about forcing somebody the ball? Obviously, there was a little drama there this season, with him demanding the ball.” The Browns defense will have their hands full with Deshaun Watson. “That offense is explosive,” says Ritter. “They can score at the drop of a dime. They had two touchdowns last week, a 55-yarder and a 77-yarder. I don’t think there’s a defense in the league that Brandin Cooks and Will Fuller can’t get behind, when they have the opportunity. So they can put up points.” Myles Garrett and company will look to make Watson’s life difficult, while the Browns offense controls the ball and the clock on the ground. “It will be closer than people think,” says Ritter. “But I think the Browns get this win.” Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers, Sunday, November 15 @ 4:25 p.m. (FOX) The Steelers are the NFL’s last remaining undefeated team , and they’ve beaten the Bengals in their last 10 matchups. Some of the Steelers’ wins this season have been close; they only beat the Dallas Cowboys by five points last week. Likewise, some of the Bengals’ losses have been close. Cincinnati also has an extra week of rest, with their bye following a nice win over the Tennessee Titans. Even with all that in mind, “it is hard to bet against the Steelers right now,” says Ritter, “assuming Big Ben and company are fine, with some of them being placed on that COVID list . This is a crazy stat to throw out here. If Ben Roethlisberger keeps up on this pace, he is going to break his single-season touchdown record at 38 years old, which is really just hard to believe. Up there is Pittsburgh, they have three wide receivers out of that organization. JuJu Smith-Schuster seemed to start coming along the last couple of games. He looked great against Dallas. Obviously, Chase Claypool, we know what he can do. And Diontae Johnson. Roethlisberger has a slew of weapons at his disposal.” > > READ: NFL Week 10 NFC North Picks: Dalvin Cook ‘Has Been Tremendous Since His Return,’ Says SportsLine’s Kenny White And the Steelers defense can be dominant, allowing 317.4 yards and 20.1 points per game. They’ve also piled up 32 sacks, best in the league. Bengals rookie QB Joe Burrow has endured his fair share of sacks, but it hasn’t seemed to slow him down. “Don’t sleep on this guy,” says Ritter. “He’s a competitor. He knows how to go out and play.” And he has a few weapons around him, with A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. “I can’t talk enough about Tee Higgins,” says Ritter, “how special this guy looks already, being so young and what he’s going to be. In a couple years, that guy, maybe even sooner, is going to be a top-five receiver in this league. I don’t expect Joe and them to roll over in any way in this game.” The Steelers are favored by 10 points, though the game could be closer. According to Ritter, “you can’t bet against Pittsburgh right now. I think they win this one.” Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots, Sunday, November 15 @ 8:20 p.m. (NBC) The Patriots, with their continuing struggles, almost handed the lowly New York Jets their first win. They’ll need to play a whole lot better to keep pace with the Ravens and improve upon their 3-5 record this week. The Ravens have their own issues , which, given their 6-2 record and personnel, are the kind of issues most teams would be happy to have. Baltimore leads the league in rushing, averaging 170.1 yards per game. Their passing game is only slightly more productive, putting up just 176.9 yards per game, among the NFL’s worst. > > READ: Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 10: Broncos Rookie KJ Hamler Beginning To Emerge The offensive issues were evident against the Indianapolis Colts defense, admittedly one of the league’s best. “That offense did not look good in the first half,” says Ritter. “[In the] second half, we start to see Lamar Jackson the MVP from last season a little bit. Kind of get into his groove, kind of take the game over.” A lot of the focus falls on the wide receivers and allowing them to make plays. According to Ritter, “there’s so much talk about the Ravens wide receivers and them not winning at the line of scrimmage in terms of those one-on-one-matchups. They have to get Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown the ball. There has been a lot of talk here in Baltimore and around the country about finding ways to get this guy the opportunities. And that falls on Greg Roman. He’s only had about 50 yards receiving the last two weeks. This is their number-one receiver. He can take the top off of the defense. He can get behind those safeties. In order for this passing game to get to that next level, they have to get ‘Hollywood’ Brown involved.” The offense has become predictable. “Lamar Jackson said today that defenses are calling out their plays on offense,” Ritter relayed. “Obviously, that’s a big concern, and it falls on the offensive coordinator. They have to switch things up, they have to get going.” Dez Bryant, recently activated from the Ravens’ practice squad, could help change that. Though it’s hard to expect too much from a receiver who hasn’t played since 2017. Despite their offensive issues, the Ravens remain a playoff contender, even as they chase the the Steelers. “They’re going to be okay,” says Ritter. “They’re going to make the playoffs. Lamar can take over a game. They have time to fix this stuff in the backend of the season with a favorable schedule. I have the Ravens winning this game on Sunday night football. Before the dynasty: Inside Bill Belichick’s forgotten 2000 season with the Patriots
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There’s a pretty good chance Todd Bowles will remain the Jets’ head coach for the remainder of the season. This according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who said Monday the organization doesn’t want to make a “rash” decision. The Jets have not fired a head coach during the season since 1975, when Ken Shipp replaced Charley Winner on an interim basis for the final five games. Even after yesterday’s horrific loss, my understanding is that any possible changes coming to the #Jets would be based on a decision made after the season, rather than during. That is the expectation. Decisions won’t be rash. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) November 12, 2018 The Jets fell to 3-7 with Sunday’s brutal 41-10 loss to the lowly Buffalo Bills , who started their fourth-string quarterback after scoring a combined 33 points over the previous four games. New York has lost four in a row, including defeats to division foes Miami and Buffalo over the last two weeks. The Jets have a bye in Week 11 before returning to action on Nov. 25 against the visiting New England Patriots, who have taken 12 of the last 14 regular season meetings. The Jets are 23-33 during Bowles three-plus seasons as head coach, but have lost 27 of their last 40 games. They have not made the playoffs since the 2010 season. Following a 13-6 loss at Miami on Nov. 4, a game in which the defense played very well and the offense struggled mightily, Sunday’s matchup with Buffalo looked favorable on paper for the Jets, even with starting quarterback Sam Darnold sidelined due to a foot injury. The Bills entered the game losers of four straight and averaging just 10.7 points per game for the season. Buffalo was also last or near the bottom of the league in most of the other primary offensive categories. But the Jets simply didn’t show up. Under journeyman quarterback Matt Barkley, who was signed off the street on Oct. 31 and had not started an NFL game since 2016, the Bills needed just two plays to take a 7-0 lead and they never looked back. “Everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong,” Bowles said. “We stunk it up as coaches, we stunk it up as players.” Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott, left, and head coach Todd Bowles of the New York Jets embrace after the Bills’ 41-10 win at MetLife Stadium on Nov. 11, 2018. (Photo by Mark Brown/Getty Images) As is usually the case when a Jets season goes off the rails, MetLife Stadium was half empty on Sunday, and among the fans that were there were ones wearing the Bills’ familiar red, white and blue colors. Expect that trend to continue over the remaining games on the schedule, as there is a good chance New York will not be favored against any of its remaining opponents. After playing at home against the Patriots following the bye, the Jets travel to Tennessee, which beat up New England on Sunday, and then play the Bills in Buffalo, where they have won just once in the last six years. The Jets then return home to face red-hot Houston and perennial NFC power Green Bay before closing the season at New England. “We’re going to try like hell to win our last six games,” Bowles said. It’s too early to say if Darnold will return in Week 12. If he can’t go, expect the Jets to again go with veteran Josh McCown, who was 17 of 34 for 135 yards with two interceptions against Buffalo.

Report: Jets May Wait Until Offseason To Address Head Coach
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Matt Barkley had just put the finishing touches on a stunning victory when he jogged over to the sideline, found his mother in the stands and handed her his well-deserved game ball. It was quite a moment for the Buffalo Bills quarterback, who looked nothing like a guy who had no job and an uncertain future just a few weeks ago. Barkley sparked Buffalo’s bumbling offense with two touchdown passes, including one to offensive tackle Dion Dawkins , LeSean McCoy broke out of a season-long slump with 113 yards rushing and a pair of TD runs, and the Bills embarrassed the New York Jets 41-10 on Sunday. “For me, I knew I could play in this league,” Barkley said. “To get back out there after two years, it was, and I don’t want to be cliché by saying it was like riding a bike, but I’ve done this for years. I feel like I was made to play football and (today) was an example of going out there and doing what I was made to do.” The New York Jets coaching staff looks on during the second quarter of an embarrassing 41-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium on Nov. 11, 2018. (Photo by Michael Owens/Getty Images) Barkley made his first start in nearly two years, and looked the best of any of the four quarterbacks the Bills (3-7) have trotted out this season. The 28-year-old journeyman was 15 of 25 for 232 yards while helping Buffalo snap a four-game losing streak as the Bills put up 451 yards of total offense. Barkley got the nod from coach Sean McDermott ahead of the ineffective Nathan Peterman despite having just two weeks of practice with the Bills since signing on Oct. 30. Rookie Josh Allen has missed four straight games with a sprained right elbow, and Derek Anderson is sidelined with a concussion. Barkley’s last start came in the 2016 season finale for Chicago. Now the question is: Should Barkley be the Bills’ starter moving forward? “I don’t know,” Barkley said. “That’s a question I don’t have the answer to, nor the authority to answer. I’ll be ready to play. This QB situation seems to be fluctuating. In whatever way I can help this team, that’s my goal.” Added McDermott: “Give me some time on that.” Meanwhile, the hot seat under coach Todd Bowles reached a boiling point as the Jets (3-7) got completely manhandled by a team that entered with a league-low 96 points and had two touchdowns in its previous four games. “Everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong,” Bowles said. “We stunk it up as coaches, we stunk it up as players.” MORE : If Jets Don’t Beat Putrid Bills All Hell Should Break Loose The Jets have a bye-week break and the future of Bowles, in his fourth season, is in serious doubt. Owner Christopher Johnson declined comment to reporters after the game. “We’re going to try like hell to win our last six games,” Bowles said. New York started 39-year-old Josh McCown in place of injured rookie Sam Darnold, but he couldn’t prevent the Jets from their fourth straight loss in front of a frustrated fan base that booed lustily throughout. McCown was 17 of 34 for 135 yards with two interceptions, and the Jets finished with just 199 total yards. “That’s the first time I felt like somebody really smacked us,” cornerback Morris Claiborne said, “and we didn’t do nothing about it.” Barkley certainly didn’t look rusty, launching a 47-yard pass to Robert Foster on the Bills’ first offensive play. Foster, just promoted from the practice squad, beat top Jets cornerback Trumaine Johnson, who had missed the previous five games with an injured quadriceps. On the next play, Barkley handed off to McCoy, who scored his first touchdown of the season with a 28-yard run that gave Buffalo a 7-0 lead 49 seconds in. Barkley and the Bills took a 14-0 lead midway through the opening quarter on a fluky play. On third-and-7 from the 11, Zay Jones caught a pass and took it 10 yards before fumbling as he reached the goal line. Tight end Jason Croom recovered in the end zone for a touchdown that was upheld by video review. The 14-play, 73-play drive was prolonged by a fake punt on fourth-and-6 from the Bills 47 when the ball was snapped directly to tight end Logan Thomas, a quarterback at Virginia Tech. Thomas then completed a 19-yard pass to Foster for the first down. The Bills outgained the Jets 186-1 after one quarter, and added to their lead less than two minutes into the second quarter on Stephen Hauschka’s 54-yard field goal that made it 17-0. If there was any doubt as to where this game was headed, the Bills added in some trickery — and embarrassment for the Jets — on their next drive. Dawkins lined up as an eligible receiver on first-and-goal from the 7. Barkley, of course, found the 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman wide open for a touchdown. The Jets had another brutal sequence on their next possession, when they had three — yes, three — holding penalties called on one play. Then McCown, facing a blitz, threw the ball up down the left sideline and Matt Milano picked it off. Seven plays later, McCoy ran it in from the 1 — moments after it was ruled he was down there and had a TD reversed — to put Buffalo up 31-0. THE REAL McCOY McCoy surpassed 500 career points, and vaulted into 26th place on the career yards rushing list. He also topped 100 yards rushing for the first time since gaining 156 in a 13-7 overtime win over Indianapolis on Dec. 10. “It’s like that big monkey’s off my back a little bit,” McCoy said. INJURIES Bills CB Taron Johnson left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury and didn’t return. … Milano left to be evaluated for a head injury in the fourth quarter. … The Jets reported no injuries. UP NEXT Bills : Bye. Home vs. Jacksonville on Nov. 25. Jets : Bye. Home vs. New England on Nov. 25. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – New York Jets welcomed Darrelle Revis into their Legends Community on Tuesday as the four-time All Pro and seven-time Pro Bowl selection officially marked his retirement at the team’s Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. The former Jets cornerback announced on social media on July 18 he was ending an 11-season career that included eight seasons with Gang Green. He also played one season with the rival New England Patriots, earning a Super Bowl championship, and a season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He left the Jets for the Kansas City Chiefs last season . “Today, I am closing a chapter in my life that I once dreamed of as a kid,” Revis posted to Twitter earlier this month. “The game of football has opened doors for me I once thought were nearly impossible to get through. My passion to play the game at an elite level brought fun and excitement to the term ‘shutdown corner’ which was nearly on the verge of extinction. pic.twitter.com/qql6ynxpEP — Darrelle Revis (@Revis24) July 18, 2018 “When I had him, obviously Darrelle was in the prime of his career, and there wasn’t anybody close to him,” Rex Ryan said earlier this month. “Maybe Deion (Sanders) in his prime, but that would be the only guy. “Darrelle could handle anybody. I don’t care if it’s Hall of Fame guys, he locked them down and covered them and it wasn’t even close.” Revis had 29 career interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, including a 100-yarder against Miami. In 2009, he was beaten out by Charles Woodson for Defensive Player of the Year honors. “That season, he was far and away the most dominant player in the NFL on defense; that he never got (defensive) MVP that year, people are crazy,” said Ryan, now an analyst for ESPN. “The impact this guy had, and on the best defense in the league, I thought he should have won that.” Revis excelled against the best, taking the likes of Terrell Owens and Steve Smith out of the game with his coverage. After a particularly lopsided first-half matchup with Smith, who was with the Panthers, the receiver asked Ryan to “get this guy off me.” “That ain’t going to happen,” Ryan told Smith. Ryan predicted that Revis would be walking into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible in 2023. “He dominated every matchup,” Ryan said. “He was simply the best.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. Legendary CB Darrelle Revis Returns To NY To Mark Retirement From NFL
MIAMI (CBSNewYork/AP) — Tony Sparano once beat Bill Belichick with the single wing, but wasn’t as old as that made him sound. Sparano was only 56 when he died unexpectedly Sunday. The Minnesota Vikings announced his death in a statement that did not provide a cause. He had been the Vikings’ offensive line coach since 2016. Sparano also served as offensive coordinator for the New York Jets in 2012, replacing Brian Schottenheimer under head coach Rex Ryan. Our deepest condolences are with Coach Sparano’s family and the entire Vikings organization. https://t.co/vsd2Rb7ij0 — New York Jets (@nyjets) July 22, 2018 The most memorable moment in Sparano’s 19-year NFL coaching career came in 2008, when he was a rookie head coach with the Miami Dolphins, inheriting a team that had gone 1-15 the previous season. In Week 3 he surprised Belichick with a single wing-style formation that the Dolphins called the wildcat, and they won at New England 38-13. The wildcat became a fad around the league, and the stunning upset propelled Sparano’s team to 11 wins and the AFC East title. It’s one of two playoff berths for the franchise since 2002. That was Sparano’s lone winning season, and he was fired in 2011 after going 29-32 in Miami. He was popular with his players, but a dismal home record, declining attendance and a falling-out with general manager Jeff Ireland accelerated his firing by owner Stephen Ross. Sparano was the Oakland Raiders’ interim head coach in 2014 after the team fired Dennis Allen, and he went 3-9. He also worked as an assistant for the Browns, Redskins, Jaguars, Cowboys and 49ers, and most recently for Vikings coach Mike Zimmer. “I love Tony Sparano,” Zimmer said in a statement. “He was a great teacher, a grinder of a worker and had a toughness and fighting spirit that showed in our linemen. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and a great friend to me. This is just sinking in for us, but Tony will be sorely missed by all.” Giants Head Coach Pat Shurmur worked with Sparano for the past two years in Minnesota. We lost a great man,” tweeted Brian Hartline, who played receiver for Sparano in Miami. “Damn I’m at a loss for words,” tweeted Raiders Pro Bowl tackle Donald Penn. “Coach Sparano taught me so much not just about football about life also.” Sparano played at the University of New Haven where he was a four-year letterman. He was hired as New Haven’s head coach in 1994 and held that position for five seasons. In Miami, Sparano lost his first two games before turning to the wildcat. Six times they ran plays from the formation at New England, snapping the ball directly to running back Ronnie Brown, and four of those plays resulted in touchdowns. “It was like playing hide and go seek, making them guess,” Brown said at the time. Sparano said the Dolphins began practicing the wildcat during training camp but waited until the Patriots game to spring it. “This is not something that just came up and we scribbled on the board a couple of days ago,” the coach said. Defenses soon adjusted, and a sputtering offense in Sparano’s final two seasons at Miami contributed to his firing. But the Dolphins haven’t won at New England since the wildcat game. “We were saddened to learn of Tony Sparano’s tragic and unexpected passing,” owner Ross said in a statement. “Tony made an indelible impact on our team’s history. His toughness, grit and leadership were evident to everyone who had the chance to coach with or play for him.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Chris Pontius scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the 93rd minute, and the 10-man the Los Angeles Galaxy rallied with two stoppage-time goals to beat the 10-man New England Revolution 3-2 on Saturday night. Dave Romney made it 2-all for the Galaxy (8-7-4) with a header to finish Romain Alessandrini’s corner in the 92nd minute. The Revolution (7-5-7) spent most of the game down a man, but took a 2-1 lead on Luis Caicedo’s goal late in the first half and held that edge until the Galaxy’s late outburst. The Revs’ Cristian Penilla was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking back at Alessandrini after getting knocked to the ground. Diego Fagundez opened the scoring five minutes later for New England and Pontius scored his first goal in the 38th minute for LA. Ashley Cole was shown his second yellow card in the 85th minute and was sent off for the Galaxy. The Galaxy’s star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was held out to rest. Galaxy Score Twice In Stoppage Time, Beat Revs 3-2
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — For Belgium and England, the third-place match at the World Cup was more like a dress rehearsal for future finals. At least they hope. The Belgians earned their best World Cup finish by beating England 2-0 on Saturday in a match both saw as the start of a push for the European Championship title in 2020 or the World Cup in 2022. “With this winning mentality you can win trophies,” said Eden Hazard, who scored Belgium’s second goal. “In two years, in four years, we will be better. We have young players. They are very good also in the team. They push all of us.” Thomas Meunier and Hazard both scored at St. Petersburg Stadium in a match between the two semifinal losers. France and Croatia will play in the final on Sunday at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. The French beat Belgium on Tuesday in the semifinals, while the Croats defeated England on Wednesday. England matched its best World Cup result — fourth in 1990 — since winning the tournament for the only time in 1966. “Today shows there’s room for improvement. We’re not the finished article. We’re still learning. We’re still getting better,” England striker Harry Kane said. “We don’t want to wait another 20-odd years to get into another major semifinal.” Both Belgium and England were playing for the seventh time in 26 days, but the Belgians entered the match with an extra day of rest. Meunier’s goal matched a World Cup record for Belgium by having 10 different players score in a tournament, something only done before by France in 1982 and Italy in 2006. Meunier scored in the fourth minute, knocking a cross from Nacer Chadli past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Hazard added the other off a pass from Kevin De Bruyne in the 82nd. Toby Alderweireld denied England’s best chance of the game, sliding on the goal line to clear a shot from Eric Dier. Belgium’s previous best finish at the World Cup was fourth, but the team outplayed England in the midfield to go one better this time. The Belgians could easily have scored more, with Pickford making a good save to stop a shot from De Bruyne in the 11th and Alderweireld volleying narrowly over the bar in the 35th. England made set pieces the cornerstone of its run to the World Cup semifinals and created chances for Harry Maguire and Dier in the second half. Neither hit the target with their headers. It was the second time England and Belgium met in this year’s tournament. In the group stage, both teams had already qualified before Belgium’s 1-0 win in Kaliningrad. FRESH LEGS England coach Gareth Southgate made five changes to face Belgium, but Danny Rose and Fabian Delph made little impact while Dier started slowly but threatened in the second half. Phil Jones failed to intercept the pass which led to Hazard’s goal. The two replacements in Belgium’s lineup were more effective. Meunier scored and Youri Tielemans dominated the midfield. GOLDEN BOOT Kane is still placed to win the Golden Boot with a tournament-leading six goals ahead of Sunday’s final. Kane last scored in England’s win over Colombia in the round of 16. On Saturday, he slipped as he shot wide in the first half, then failed to make contact with Jesse Lingard’s cross early in the second. Romelu Lukaku couldn’t add to his four goals for Belgium and was substituted shortly after misjudging a through ball by De Bruyne. NEXT STOP 2020 The next major tournament is the 2020 European Championship, which will be played at venues across the continent but with the semifinals and finals in London at Wembley Stadium. England defender John Stones said that could be a boost after the surprise run to the semifinals in Russia prompted a surge in support for the team at home. But Southgate said England still has a long way to go. “We’ve finished in the top four, but we’re not a top-four team yet,” Southgate said. “Against the very best teams, we’ve come up short.” (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press.
