2 Dead, 4 Wounded In Shooting Outside South LA Liquor Store

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Authorities said two men were killed and four more wounded in a shooting outside a South LA liquor store Saturday evening. The incident happened outside Monarch Liquors around 8:30 p.m. at 88th and Vermont Avenue in what officials are calling a drive-by shooting. The four wounded are expected to survive. KCAL9’s Jeff Nguyen said detectives told him there were bullet casings up and down the street. Witnesses said they heard about a dozen shots. They said several people riding in a black, four-door vehicle drove by and began shooting. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Nguyen spoke to several witnesses, none of them wanted to appear on camera. “I was in a car with my cousin,” one woman said, “and they just started shooting out the window. I got out when the shooting started and I went in cause my mom was in the store. And basically when I came out, a person that I know was shot and on the ground. And shot a couple of times. He was just an innocent bystander. It’s crazy.” Another man said he saw people running for cover. “I saw people running towards the corner,” he said, “and when I came to see it, my friends were still there. And there was a guy dead. And I just backed up, I didn’t want to see it.” What led up to the shooting is under investigation.

Five Hurt After Car Plows Into Crowd Outside Downey Bar; Driver Arrested

DOWNEY (CBSLA) – A man has been taken into custody on drunken driving charges after he allegedly drove his car into a crowd of people outside a Downey bar early Friday morning, injuring himself and four others. The collision occurred before 2:15 a.m. outside the Anarchy Library bar, at East Foster Road and Woodruff Avenue. Witnesses told CBS2 that the suspect, a 28-year-old man, was driving down the street, revving his engine just before he lost control and slammed into the crowd. The car also struck a pole and another car. “And he revved the engine up just to show off the engine in front of everybody in front of the club, showing off the engine, revving it, driving lightning fast,” witness Mark Gonzalez told CBS2. “Then he made a turn on this street going this direction, burning rubber, skidding across the intersection, and then I didn’t see him, and then a second later, boom, we heard the crash.” Four pedestrians were hurt, three of whom sustained critical injuries, the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed. One of the victims was pinned underneath the car and had to be rescued. “He got pinned between two cars and he was laying on the ground right there,” witness Gregory Jones said. “Personally, it hurts my heart to see anything like that, I had to walk across the street. I couldn’t even look any longer.” All four were rushed to a hospital and are expected to survive, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department reports. The driver was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was later booked on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Couple In Their 70s Killed When House Explodes In South Jersey

NEWFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities say two people were killed when a house exploded in southern New Jersey early Saturday. The Gloucester County prosecutor’s office says the blast in Newfield was reported around 6:15 a.m. CBS Philly reports that the blast originated in basement of a house on the 300 block of Oakwood Drive and caused damage to nearby homes, scattering debris over several blocks. Debris strewn across the ground on the 300 block of Oakwood Drive in Newfield, NJ after a reported house explosion this morning. It’s just tough, it really is. They were really great family. I just feel for my cousin Susan and my cousin Tony.” “They were very nice people,” said Audra Manasco, who grew up next door. “We were planning a pool day next door, because he has a pool and he always lets us use his pool.” Volunteers responded to a home explosion on Oakwood Drive in #Newfield , helping 2 families (7 people) in neighboring homes which were affected, with Red Cross emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing needs. #DisasterRelief — Red Cr_ss New Jersey (@NJRedCross) July 8, 2018 Authorities gave no immediate word on a possible cause, but add no foul play was suspected. Neighbors tell CBS Philly there was an appliance delivery truck in the driveway Friday and they fear something may have been installed incorrectly, causing a gas leak. The county fire marshal is investigating, along with several other agencies, including a state police arson-bomb unit, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Franklin Township police department.
