TOMICH Scotland (CBS News) – No fewer than 361 golden retrievers gathered on the estate of the 19th century aristocrat Lord Tweedmouth to celebrate the breed’s 150th anniversary. His Lordship, the story goes, was in need of a hunting dog who could master both the rugged, rocky terrain and the soggy, boggy marshes of the Scottish Highlands. To that end he crossed a wavy-coated retriever with a tweed-water spaniel to create the forerunner of the golden retriever – equally at home on both land and water. Today, of course, the golden retriever is beloved on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, it’s now the third most popular breed in the United States, behind Labrador retrievers and the German shepherd. (© 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The family of fallen NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos is relieved to have their dog Heaven back home. They got the dog to help bring comfort after Ramos’ death. She was born the same day Ramos died, which is why she’s named Heaven. She wandered away from their home in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn on July 12. The officer’s widow, Maritza Ramos, took to Facebook last week and posted a “missing” flyer for her beloved pet. On Friday night, Ramos told CBS2’s Andrea Grymes the dog had been returned. “Someone contacted me and brought her to me,” she said. “If it was no for the media should would have never returned home to us.” Ramos and his partner, Wenjian Liu, were murdered on December 20, 2014 , while sitting inside their marked police car in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. The accused gunman, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, was apparently upset over the police-involved deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Brinsley ran into a nearby subway station after shooting the officers and shot himself in the head.

HOWELL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A couple in New Jersey flew halfway across the world to save a furry friend. They traveled more than 6,000 to help their sick dog, a 8-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Remy. Owner Cathy Cuni says her beloved pooch is always a ray of sunshine, but back in September she was diagnosed with a form of degenerative heart failure. Remy had end-stage mitral valve disease, or MVD, and there’s no cure. Given only six to 18 months to live, doctors told the Cunis only one man could perform the necessary heart bypass surgery that could help Remy live longer. The only catch? That man’s in Japan, and his surgery costs $17,000. With travel and other circumstantial expenses the total bill approached $25,000. The immense cost would force Cuni and her husband to borrow from their 401(k) and take a month off work. With all the testing, paperwork, and required quarantine it took nine months for the couple to get clearance to see Dr. Masami Uechi. “She’s my baby, but she’s a responsibility that I chose to take on,” Cuni said. “She wasn’t born and said ‘I’m going to the Cuni’s house’.” Following a 14-hour flight, Remy underwent 7 hours of surgery. The procedure was a complete success. “Don’t give up hope,” Cuni said. “Surgery is not for everyone but there are things you can do by being informed to prolong your dog’s life.” MVD is relatively common in small dog breeds, and normally hits after the age of eight. Cuni says the Mighty Hearts Project, a group of dog owners who also opted for MVD surgery, really helped support and educate the family every step of the way. “She can now go on and live out the rest of her years with us the rest of her natural life,” Cuni said. Her and her husband also own three rabbits and three other dogs, so the hope is their furry family has many more years together.

Peachtree City, GA (CBS Local)- Normally, deer tend to scurry away when humans approach. However, in one Georgia town, a group of deer have become aggressive, attacking multiple dogs and injuring one so badly that it had to be put down. According to CBS 46 in Atlanta, GA, deer in southeast Peachtree City have attacked at least a dozen dogs in the area. Caroline Lucsko, whose daughter Carolyn Taylor’s dog was attacked, described how the attack happened. “All of the sudden, the deer started chasing them, and my daughter took off, running really fast, and the deer just trampled on her little basset hound,” said Lucsko. Resident Hunter Wood, whose dog had to be euthanized after it was attacked when a doe jumped the fence into his backyard, told CBS 46 that he believes people are to blame for the deer’s lack of fear. “We’ve got such a heavy deer population in this area, which is partly contributed to the fact that the neighbors feed them,” said Wood. He believes that the deer are mistaking the dogs for coyotes, which is the reason for the aggressive behavior.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are searching for a man they say tried to rape a woman while she was jogging inside a Bronx park. It happened around 7:50 a.m. Monday at Bronx River Forest park near 204th Street and Webster Avenue. Police said the suspect followed the 35-year-old victim, came up behind her and placed his hand over her mouth and arm across her chest, trying to pull her backwards. She fought him off, yelled for help and kept running farther into the park, police said. Police say this man tried to rape a 35 y/o female jogger yesterday in #Bronx River Forest Park just before 8 am. She fought him off, he's still on the loose. NYPD says rapes are up 34 percent this year: 912 rapes first 6 months of 2018 compared to 680 last year @CBSNewYork pic.twitter.com/5jxSstnQtP — Reena Roy (@reenaroy) July 10, 2018 Police said the woman came across the man again while she was leaving the park and managed to take a picture of him. “Wow, that is scary,” one woman told CBS2’s Reena Roy. “Too many bushes and trees, I’m scared. So I come early and I don’t stay late.” “This is always my greatest fear. I always walk with that in the back of my mind,” another woman added. “It is scary. I don’t want to know that I can’t come out and exercise.” “This is kind of a family park. People come here to run with their dogs, with their kids. So it’s very unfortunate that happened,” Bronx resident Marc Duplessy said. The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, 17 to 25 years old with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with a black shirt across his chest, black shorts and white sneakers. The victim was treated for minor injuries. The NYPD insists crime is down overall , but rapes are up 34 percent: 912 from the first six months of 2018 compared to 680 in 2017. “Rape we always known has been an often under-reported crime. Statistically, nationally they say it’s one of the most under-reported crimes there are,” NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said during Tuesday’s briefing on crime statistics in the city. “That’s the one crime that we look at going up that you’ve got to weigh – it’s actually a good thing, because more people are coming forward, especially when we see it in domestic violence cases, because those are the ones that never come forward and now we’re seeing a huge uptick in people coming forward.” Police are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with info is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-700-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via the Crime Stoppers website , or by texting a tip to 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577.
