Kershaw Pitches Well, Knocks In 2 As Dodgers Beat The Braves, 4-1

ATLANTA (AP) — Clayton Kershaw pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, added a two-run single and reached four times, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Friday night. Kershaw (4-5) was his usual dominant self on the mound, allowing one run and six hits and striking out eight. The three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP is 4-0 with a 1.43 ERA in 10 career starts against the Braves. He surprised the capacity crowd at SunTrust Park by doubling down the left-field line to put Los Angeles up 4-1 in the fourth. The inside-out swing that scored Matt Kemp and Chris Taylor didn’t draw too loud of a reaction from the fans, but they had seen enough in the eighth when Kershaw walked for the third time. Atlanta reliever Jesse Biddle was showered with boos. Los Angeles has won two straight, improving its NL-best road record to 30-22. The Dodgers are 32-16 overall since June 1, tops in the NL over that span. The Braves have lost three straight and 12 of 17. They were in first place for all but two days from May 2-July 10, but the loss kept them 2½ games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. Kershaw departed in the eighth with two runners on as closer Kenley Jansen got the last four outs to earn his 30th save in 33 chances. Freddie Freeman flew out to end the eighth, and Jansen faced the minimum in the ninth. Mike Foltynewicz (7-7) lost for the third time in his last four starts, giving up four runs, six hits and three walks and striking out eight in five innings. A first-time All-Star, Foltynewicz owns a 6.94 ERA and has allowed four homers in his last four outings. Alex Verdugo tied it at 1-all in the third with his second career homer. Foltynewicz, appearing upset with himself for giving up the lead, immediately walked Kershaw on five pitches and seemed agitated the rest of the night. Yasmani Grandal hit his 17th homer to begin the fourth and has a .389 average with six homers and 14 RBIs in 19 games this month. The Dodgers lead the NL with 142 homers, 101 of them solo shots. Kershaw worked out of trouble in the seventh. Nick Markakis singled and advanced to second when Kershaw hit Kurt Suzuki in the back with a pitch, but Johan Camargo struck out and Ender Inciarte lined into a double play. Atlanta led 1-0 in the second when Suzuki singled and scored on a groundout. TRAINER’S ROOM After missing 15 games with a right oblique strain, Dodgers RF Yasiel Puig arrived Friday in Atlanta and will return from the disabled list on Saturday. Manager Dave Roberts gave Puig the night off to spend time with his mother. Puig will likely be in Saturday’s lineup, but Roberts added that the club will use a rotation going forward so that Puig, Kemp, Pederson and Alex Verdugo get enough rest. Roberts also gives Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez starts in the outfield, too. “I think if I can keep them fresh, they’ll perform better, and if they’re mad at me, they’ll still perform better,” Roberts said. Roberts added that LHP Julio Urias, nearly recovered from major shoulder surgery sidelined him over a year, will be used in relief when he returns next month. … 3B Justin Turner did some lateral running and took some swings in batting practice. He’s missed five games with a right groin strain. HE’S BACK LHP Jonny Venters, after three Tommy John procedures and four elbow surgeries overall, was back in a Braves uniform for the first time since 2012, pitching a scoreless sixth. The 33-year-old returned to the majors earlier this year with Tampa Bay, making his first appearance in six years. Atlanta acquired him in a trade Thursday night. Venters said his stuff isn’t as dominant as it used to be, but he was delighted to get a chance to pitch for his old team just 15 miles from his family’s home in Suwanee, Georgia. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Alex Wood (6-5, 3.87 ERA) is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in his last four starts. Braves: LHP Max Fried (1-3, 3.92) will come off the disabled list for the first time since July 5. Mets Place Ailing Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes On DL Following MRI

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Yoenis Cespedes is back on the disabled list, and the New York Mets are still deciding whether the oft-injured slugger needs surgery on both feet that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery. An announcement had been expected before Tuesday night’s game against San Diego, but about 35 minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch Mets spokesman Harold Kaufman said the team was still waiting to receive a second opinion and it was unlikely the news conference would take place until after the game. New York put Cespedes on the 10-day DL and called up infielders Jeff McNeil and Phillip Evans from Triple-A Las Vegas. Evans was in the starting lineup at third base, batting eighth. Utilityman Ty Kelly was designated for assignment. Cespedes had an MRI and was examined by a specialist Monday in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery to alleviate chronic heel pain related to all the lower-body injuries that have kept him off the field so much since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract in November 2016. The two-time All-Star returned from the disabled list Friday after missing two months with a strained right hip flexor and homered in a victory at Yankee Stadium. Disabled Homeowner Moving Out After HOA Tells Her To Move Goldfish

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (CBS Local) – A year-long spat between an Indiana woman and her homeowner’s association over goldfish is coming to an end. Carol Hanquier of Johnson County has decided to sell her home after the local HOA demanded the disabled resident relocate two goldfish ponds she keeps in her family’s front driveway. Hanquier was seriously injured in a 2008 car crash and is on permanent disability. To deal with anxiety, the Indiana mother had the two large tanks installed three years ago. Hanquier says the golfish provide her emotional support. “The fish are extremely soothing,” Hanquier told WRTV in August of 2017 after the Silver Springs HOA filed a lawsuit against her. “It’s something I look forward to. I’m by myself all day long.” Hanquier claims a proposal to move her fish to the backyard was not possible as the area is home to the disabled mother’s other service animal, a miniature horse. The family says their HOA has refused to help find any other solution after Silver Springs claimed Hanquier installed the ponds without permission. The HOA lawsuit says it’s a violation to keep the ponds in the driveway because they “are visible from the street” and may “diminish the aesthetic appearance of the real estate.” The Indiana family claims they have no choice but to sell their home out and have been harassed by HOA officials. “We are being forced out of our home, and they want us gone by August 10,” Hanquier said, via WTVF . “They have done nothing but harass by coming to our home four times a week to inspect.” Scott Tanner, attorney for Silver Springs HOA, disputed the family’s allegations. Tanner adds August 10 is the date Hanquier must respond to the HOA lawsuit, it is not a deadline to move.

NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Syndergaard pitched out of trouble in a rusty return from the disabled list and helped himself with an RBI single as the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Friday night. Amed Rosario tripled and doubled, both times over Bryce Harper’s head in center field, and the Mets won for only the sixth time in their last 26 home games. They have lost just three of 13 games at Citi Field since the start of last season. After missing seven weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger, Syndergaard (5-1) came out firing 99 mph fastballs. But he gave up seven hits in five innings and never retired the leadoff hitter. Still, the 2016 All-Star held the Nationals to one run while striking out three and walking two. Wilmer Difo made things easier by running into the first out of the third inning at third base, and Syndergaard retired Anthony Rendon and struck out Harper with two on to limit the damage. Difo had doubled to drive in Roark, who opened the inning with the first triple by a Washington pitcher since Joel Hanrahan in 2007. Syndergaard also got Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play with two runners aboard in the fifth. The right-hander was pulled after 75 pitches. Seth Lugo overcame a wild start to his relief outing and worked two hitless innings. Robert Gsellman gave up Adams’ upper-deck shot in the eighth but got six outs for his fourth save. Roark (3-12) became the first 12-game loser in the majors this season. He allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings. The right-hander has lost his last five starts and six decisions since his most recent win June 6 against Tampa Bay. Washington has dropped his past seven starts and nine of his last 10. Jose Bautista and Devin Mesoraco each had an RBI single in the first, sandwiched around Wilmer Flores’ sacrifice fly. Rosario tripled off the center-field wall to open the second and scored when a smiling Syndergaard lined a single to right field. Turner flied out as a pinch hitter leading off the ninth. … RHP Koda Glover is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Class A Potomac after his rehab assignment was moved up from the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. The reliever has been sidelined all season by right shoulder tendinitis and will probably require eight or nine appearances before he’s ready to come off the disabled list, manager Dave Martinez said. Wheeler, pitching in some poor luck, is 0-5 over 13 outings since his last win April 29 at San Diego. That’s the longest stretch without a win for a Mets starter since 1998. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Clayton Kershaw pitched six shutout innings, and Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner each had three hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 8-2 on Monday night. Kershaw (3-4) improved his career mark to 18-6 against the Padres as the Dodgers moved a half-game behind the idle Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League West lead. Los Angeles won for the 33rd time in 48 contests. Luis Perdomo (1-3) gave up six runs, 10 hits and three walks — one intentional — over seven innings in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A El Paso. The Padres were handcuffed by Kershaw as they managed but a pair of singles and a walk against the Dodgers’ ace. Kershaw was sharp from the onset, recording his five strikeouts in the first four innings. San Diego never had two baserunners aboard in the same inning and had just one in scoring position during his outing. The Padres, who got a home run from Wil Myers in the ninth, lost for the sixth time in eight games. It was Myers’ fifth homer in three games. Kershaw, who has had two stints on the disabled list this year, won his second straight start in throwing 89 pitches, his most since May 1. Monday’s impressive outing gave Kershaw his first road win of the season and came on the heels of him tossing six innings in a win over the Pirates. The Dodgers broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs after sending eight batters to the plate. Bellinger opened with an opposite-field double, Matt Kemp walked and Yasmani Grandal hit a double to drive in Bellinger. Chris Taylor’s RBI single made it 2-0 and Andrew Toles stroked a two-run double off the base of the left-field fence. Toles, called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City before the game with Yasiel Puig (oblique) going on the disabled list, scored from third on Joc Pederson’s grounder to stalk Kershaw to a 5-0 lead Perdomo wiggled from a jam in the second as the Dodgers had two singles, a double and a walk. But Kemp hit into a double play and Kershaw grounded out to end the threat. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: RF Puig (right oblique) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Manager Dave Roberts said Puig will be out for an extended period of time. Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles (right elbow) threw a bullpen session on Sunday and is slated for another one on Wednesday. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Rich Hill (2-3), who is coming off a win over the Pirates, starts the middle game of the four-game series. Hill has a career mark of 4-3 with a 3.18 ERA in eight starts against the Padres. Padres: LHP Eric Lauer (4-5) has settled down after a rocking April-May in which he posted a 7.67 ERA in seven starts. Over six outings in June, Lauer had a 2.76 ERA.
