Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 16, 2018 Trump referring to Special Council Robert Mueller indicting 12 Russian military officers last week for allegedly interfering with the 2016 presidential election. Putin has denied being involved. “I find it hard to believe, but that’s what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see eye-to-eye with President Putin and ask him about it,” said National Security Adviser John Bolton. Trump told CBS Evening News anchor Jeff Glor that he has low expectations for the summit. “I go into a meeting like that never with high expectations, but maybe some really good stuff can happen,” he said. “I wanna do great for our country and I’m sure he wants to do well for his.” The president is meeting first alone with Putin and translators. After, there will be an expanded meeting with the president will be joined by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Bolton and Chief of Staff John Kelly. The Senate’s number two Republican, Sen. John Cornyn, is warning the president to be wary of Putin. “Putin is an autocrat. He’s a thug. He does not respect the rule of law,” he said. “Obviously, he doesn’t respect our democracy.” Trump and Putin have met briefly at other events, but this will be the first time the two will have extended talks.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s the last straw, of sorts, for Starbucks. The java giant and MGM resorts have joined the growing list of companies eliminating plastic straws. Dozens of cities across the country have already established bans or restrictions on the use of plastic straws in restaurants and earlier this year, a bill was introduced to ban them and drink stirrers at restaurants and bars around the five boroughs. Environmentalists say the straws endanger aquatic wildlife. The director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s “ Give a Sip ” campaign, John Calvelli, stopped by to tell us more.

WASHINGTON (CBS News) – Twelve Russians have been indicted by a grand jury in the special counsel probe for alleged hacking during the 2016 election, including for hacking emails of the Democratic National Committee, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced Friday. U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (C) holds a news conference at the Department of Justice July 13, 2018 in Washington, DC. (Getty Images) Rosenstein said the 12 defendants are all members of the Russian intelligence arm GRU, and attempted to interfere with the 2016 presidential election by spear phishing volunteers and employees of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. By doing this, according to the indictment, they were able to steal usernames and passwords, eventually hacking into the networks of the Democratic National Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee. The GRU, Rosenstein said, created and controlled the groups D.C. Leaks and Guccifer 2.0., which in 2016, posted thousands of emails from Democratic party officials. READ HERE: The Mueller Indictment The indictment says that the alleged conspirators “spearphished individuals affiliated with the Clinton campaign throughout the summer of 2016,” and then goes on to say that “on or about July 27, 2016, the conspirators attempted after hours to spearphish for the first time email accounts at a domain hosted by a third-party provider and used by Clinton’s personal office. At or around the same time, they also targeted seventy-six email addresses at the domain for the Clinton campaign.” On that same day, July 27, 2016, Donald Trump expressed the hope that Russia would find Clinton’s missing emails. “I will tell you this — Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press,” the GOP presidential nominee said at a press conference in Miami. In another related allegation, the indictment claims Russian officers hacked a state election board’s website and stole the information of roughly 500,000 voters. The indictment also alleges the GRU officers hacked into computers belonging to a company that supplies software used to verify voter information, and targeted local and state election offices. Rosenstein made it clear that no Americans are accused of any wrongdoing. “There is no allegation in this indictment that Americans knew they were corresponding with Russian intelligence officers,” said Rosenstein, who also noted there is no evidence the alleged hacking had any impact on the election results. The indictment does mention that Russians provided opposition research to a congressional candidate, although that individual is not named. The indictment claims the conspirators, posing as Guccifer 2.0, “received a request for stolen documents from a candidate for the U.S. Congress. The Conspirators responded using the Guccifer 2.0 persona and sent the candidate stolen documents related to the candidate’s opponent,” the indictment reads. The charges come just days before President Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. Rosenstein said he briefed Mr. Trump on the indictment earlier this week. “I’ll allow president to speak for himself,” Rosenstein said, asked for Mr. Trump’s response to the news. “Obviously it’s Important for the president to know what information we’ve uncovered because he’s got to make very important decisions for the country. So he needs to understand what evidence we have of foreign election interference.” The White House honed in on Rosenstein’s statement that the indictment does not include any Americans, or say the Russians influenced the election results. The statement did not condemn the Russians’ alleged behavior. ” Today’s charges include no allegations of knowing involvement by anyone on the campaign and no allegations that the alleged hacking affected the election result. This is consistent with what we have been saying all along,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said. Back in July 2016, Mr. Trump tweeted that the “new joke in town” is Russia leaked the “disastrous DNC emails.” “The new joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC e-mails, which should never have been written (stupid), because Putin likes me,” he tweeted on July 25, 2016. Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer who is aiding Mr. Trump in the Russia investigation, used Rosenstein’s announcement as an opportunity to call on Mueller to end his investigation and declare Mr. Trump’s innocence. When a reporter in London asked Mr. Trump if he would bring up election meddling with Putin, Mr. Trump said he would. The charges come after Mueller’s investigation has already led to the indictment of 13 Russian nationals who were accused of manipulating social media. In the face of alleged foreign interference, Rosenstein urged unity and patriotism against foreign interference. “The partisan warfare fueled by modern technology does not fairly reflect the grace, dignity and unity of the American people,” Rosenstein said. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. LONDON (CBSNewYork) — President Donald Trump called the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. “the highest level of special” during a joint news conference Friday with British Prime Minister Theresa May. The two leaders spoke after meeting at Chequers, the prime minister’s country estate. “I want to thank you for the honor of visiting the United Kingdom, a special place,” Trump told May at the news conference. “My mother was born here. It means something maybe just a little bit extra, maybe a lot extra. We had a wonderful visit.” MORE FROM CBS NEWS The president said May is “doing a fantastic job” as British prime minister and said “I think she’s a terrific woman.” Reporters questioned Trump and May on a variety of topics, including NATO, Brexit, immigration and other issues. When asked what he hopes to accomplish in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Trump said they would be talking about Ukraine, Syria and other parts of the Middle East as well as nuclear proliferation. “I’m not going in with high expectations but we may come out with surprising things,” Trump said. “Relationship is very important.” The president also said he would bring up Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The prime minister’s Brexit plans was likely a focus of Friday’s discussions. In a newspaper interview, Trump was critical of May’s proposals for exiting the European Union. When asked about the interview, Trump said, “I didn’t criticize the prime minister. I have a lot of respect for the prime minister.” May praised the bond between the U.S. and the U.K., but said “it is all of our responsibility to ensure that trans-Atlantic unity endures.” On immigration, Trump said it has been “very bad” for Europe. May said the U.K. has a “proud history of welcoming people who want to come to our country to contribute to our economy and contribute to our society.” “Over the years, overall immigration has been good for the U.K.,” she said. “Of course, what is important is that we have control of our borders.” Later Friday, Queen Elizabeth will welcome the president, which will include a formal tea at Windsor Castle. Trump will end his day with a trip to his Turnberry golf club course in Scotland.

THAILAND (CBSNewYork) — New details have emerged about how 12 boys and their soccer coach stayed alive while trapped in a flooded cave. As CBS News’ Anna Werner reports, one boy played a key role in the rescue effort . Teacher Kru Nice says 14-year-old Adun Sam-On has always been a leader, despite the fact he doesn’t have his parents with him or even an official home. Since Adun’s parents slipped him out of Myanmar eight years ago to escape the ethnic conflicts there, he’s become one of many students at this school considered “stateless” — not a citizen of Thailand or any other country. Yet here, Adun is a top student and a standout athlete. When asked how she felt when she found out Adun was trapped in a cave, Kru said “I was so worried.” More From CBS News But Adun’s proficiency in languages — he speaks four — proved key inside the cave, as he acted as translator for the British divers during the complicated rescue. Before they were found, a family member tells CBS News the boys worked together to survive for nine days in the cave. When the boys entered the cave they each had a flashlight, they had one watch and one mobile phone with light until the batteries died. They were able to check the watch for the time for the first three days. They slept close together for warmth and took turns digging in the cave to try and redirect the water that had trapped them. Now, the boys are in the hospital where new video shows them sitting up in their beds. Parents are allowed to see them for 15 minutes at a time, three times a day. Although some parents only come twice a day so the boys can get more rest. Thai officials said they plan to create an interactive museum that will feature items such as the clothing worn by rescuers.
