NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A homeless population living on the street by choice is back in the city again, and some East Village residents aren’t thrilled about these visitors. Packs of so-called “crust punks” or “crusties” taking over the streets, panhandling, drinking and getting rowdy have become a familiar sight in the summer, reports CBS2’s Reena Roy. “It’s getting worse now than it was before,” said Tania Martinez who lives in the East Village. “Me paying a lot of money being here, I shouldn’t see things like this.” The homeless nomads – known to hop freight trains – pop in and out of cities across the country like Seattle and San Francisco, often ending up in and around Tompkins Square Park when it gets warm out. The pilgrimage dates back to the late 1970s when many began migrating for the neighborhood’s punk rock music scene. Like most subcultures, rejecting the status quo was a conscious choice by its members. “It’s absolutely a choice,” said Dallas, one of the movement’s adherents. “We just hate our government system, the way it affects us as a whole.” Dallas admits life on the streets can often get out of hand. “Some of us, we drink and fight and do drugs and people don’t like that on the streets,” he said, admitting their presence can be a nuisance. NYPD sources say there are more transient people this summer because of the city’s increasing opioid epidemic. The narcotics division has been patrolling the park to help, with police doubling arrests this year – many of them drug related. Police sources say because of the stepped up enforcement, many “crust punks” have started sleeping inside abandoned buildings in the outer boroughs instead. Councilman Stephen Levin says homeless outreach teams are also out in force, but can only do so much. “People have a right to stay on street if they want to, if they choose to,” said Levin. “It’s our job as the city to provide an adequate alternative to that so people feel safe.” So for now, the “crusties” are here to stay… until their next stop.

Stony Brook, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The family of a Long Island newborn with a fighting spirit to survive learned Friday their baby boy may be released from hospital next month. Christian Rojas is 83 days old and has spent every moment of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “I was 12 weeks pregnant, and we went in to find out the gender, and they told us that he was a boy,” said Christian’s mother, Nykki Hunter. “We were just overcome with emotion. Then, they said, ‘We need to speak with you in the other room.’” “My body just went numb, because I was trying to process what was going on,” said Christian’s father, Christopher Rojas. An ultrasound revealed Christian would be born with a congenital disorder called gastroschisis. His intestines had emerged through a hole in the abdominal wall on the outside of his body, and his life was at risk. “Christian suffered, unfortunately, the consequences of the intestine twisting when it’s outside the body,” said Dr. Christopher Muratore. “That’s the most feared complication.” The newborn was rushed into surgery, saving his life. In the meantime, specialists across the country are stymied why this condition has increased 30 percent in five years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say 4.9 births out of every 10,000 are linked to gastroschisis. Age of the mother, environmental factors and recessive genetic traits are being studied. “The prayers haven’t stopped,” said Rojas. “We get so much support from the community, all around social media.” Families whose babies have gastroschisis are linked via a vast social media outreach. “It just gives us that much more hope and faith to get through this and know we’re not alone,” said Rojas. Christian’s empty nursery awaits him. Doctors hope he can go home in another month. “We never want to leave him behind,” said Hunter. “It’s the hardest thing to put him down and walk away and leave him in the hands of somebody else who’s not us.” Both mom and dad work, but once Christian comes home, one parent will have to be with him at all times. The local community is holding a fundraiser on Saturday at the hospital to help with Christian’s medical costs and to raise awareness of the gastroschisis disorder.

(CBS San Francisco/CBS Local) — The newest “sextortion” phishing scam circulating online is targeting victims with threats of exposing their use of porn and actual passwords. It’s a new, more-believable twist on an old scam that is popping up in email accounts across the country. Con artists are threatening to release compromising videos and using victims’ real passwords to convince them it’s not a scam. Imagine opening your inbox to find your name — and one of your real passwords in the subject line. KPIX 5 ConsumerWatch reporter Julie Watts recently received once such email. Once they get your attention with this new, more credible and creepy twist, they try to extort money using an old sextortion scam. The culprit will claiming they have webcam recordings of the victim watching adult videos and threaten to send the videos out to your entire contact list if you don’t pay up using Bitcoin. While the good news is that the bad guys don’t have comprising video, the bad news is they do have your real password. CNET staff reporter and cybersecurity specialist Laura Hautala says the scam may evolve from porn threats to something victims may actually fall for. If somebody saw that a hacker had your password, you could believe they had more dirt beyond that password said Hautlala. You might not be worried about your non-existent porn history being used, but you might be worried about something happening to someone you love. We could see different variations of this. In Julie Watts’ case, the scammers used an old password she hadn’t used in years, likely something purchased on the dark web following a data breech. By visiting on to the haveibeenpwned.com website , users can see if their email addresses and passwords have been compromised over the years in several breaches dating back to 2013, including Adobe, Dropbox, LinkedIn and MySpace. And with an increasing number of data breaches and easy access to other personal information online, it’s likely the new “I know your password” twist will only get more sophisticated. If a hacker wanted to spend more money to buy something new, you might get an email that’s a bit more convincing that has your current password or something really recent, said Hautlala. The bottom line? Your best bet is to ignore the emails demanding money. Even if they appear to have personal information, don’t engage with the sender. Security experts recommend a password manager that creates a unique passwords for each account. If your password are secure you’re less likely to encounter these scams. And in general, it’s a good idea to keep you web cameras covered when not in use, just in case.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say they finally caught up with a man wanted in connection with the death of a nurse in Queens, discovering the suspect on the other side of the country with another woman held captive in a Los Angeles hotel room. Danueal Drayton, 27, of New Haven, Conn., was taken into custody Thursday. The hunt began after 29-year-old nurse Samantha Stewart was found dead inside her bedroom at her family home in Springfield Gardens, Queens, on July 17. Police say Stewart suffered trauma to her head and neck. “A lot of sorrow is in my heart,” her aunt, Ruby Dixon, told CBS2’s Tony Aiello after learning about Drayton’s arrest. “My niece was the best you ever could find in a human being.” (credit: NYPD) Police had been searching for the person responsible for Stewart’s murder and also another incident involving the rape of a 23-year-old woman that happened the month before in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Both investigations led them to the same suspect, when the joint New York/New Jersey Police Task Force caught up with Drayton. “There was a separate woman in a hotel room in California that was being held against her will,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea. “Right after he commit a gruesome murder here and destroy my family, he went to California and just almost did the same thing,” Stewart’s father, Kenneth, said. “Thank God they catch him before he could destroy another family.” When we captured Danuel Drayton in LA for the murder of Queens nurse Samantha Stewart, he had another victim held captive. They say he also may have used other dating sites to meet potential victims. “The common denominator in these two cases – one being a murder, one being a rape – is dating websites,” said Shea. “So this individual is known to us and it is believed by us that this individual uses dating web sites to meet women and then victimize these women.” Police say Drayton was well known to police. He was arrested in June for allegedly choking an ex-girlfriend at Inwood Park in Nassau County. One July 1, his bail was set at $1,000. On July 5, a judge dropped the bail requirement, over the objection of the district attorney, and Drayton walked free. He also has five prior arrests in his home state of Connecticut, including a strangulation arrest in 2011. “I’m devastated by my loss of my daughter, but hearing this news now it really, really shocks me, throws me over the edge,” said Kenneth Stewart. Police believe there may be more victims out there and are asking for anyone affected or who has information to come forward. “Be careful. If you meet up with someone, tell somebody,” Dixon said. “Tell a family member, tell a friend. You don’t know who these monsters are.” Stewart’s funeral is set for Saturday.

Bruce Embrey, co-chair of the Manzanar Committee, said Wednesday that Herzig-Yoshinaga died July 18 at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance. She was 93. Her discovery of a 1942 document in the National Archives revealed that approximately 120,000 Japanese-Americans weren’t sent to camps around the country for national security concerns. The real reason, according to the document, was because Japanese cultural ties led authorities to believe it was not possible to tell spies from law-abiding citizens. A report on the best jobs in the country says those grads may want to find a career as a software developer or a dentist. According to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of the 100 best jobs in America, software developers topped the list with a median salary of $100,080 and over 250,000 projected jobs available this year. Dentists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and orthodontists all finished in the top five of 2018’s list. “Health care jobs are prominent on our list year after year and are predicted to continue growing rapidly within the job market by 2026,” careers reporter Rebecca Koenig said in January . “Health care goes beyond doctors and nursing professions – there is high demand for people to fill positions available in health care technology, at hospitals and elsewhere within the industry.” Tech jobs continue their strong showing on this year’s list with information security analysts (32nd), IT managers (42nd), and computer systems analysts (46th) all making the top 100. The country’s best paying job was found to be for anesthesiologists, who have an annual median salary of $208,000. Statisticians and actuaries were found to be the best jobs for people looking for a career in business.

David Elliot alleged in a Facebook post, which is no longer visible to the public, that the owner of a florist shop in Avon first agreed to make flowers for his wedding and then backed out after learning there was no bride. “I said ‘I need two boutonnieres.’ She then said ‘What does the bride need?’ I said ‘Well there is no bride.’ And then she said ‘Well then I’m going on vacation and I can’t help you.’ I then said ‘OK,’ and I walked out,” Elliot posted on July 19. The Indiana man then added that he assumed the florist’s change of heart was caused by his same-sex relationship. Avon Florist did not respond to requests for comment from local news outlets. Elliot told WRTV he wasn’t angry about the alleged denial of service, but believes public businesses should be able to put their personal feelings aside for their customers. The florist shop has already been attacked online by people in other parts of the country who see the alleged incident as anti-LGBTQ. Over a dozen one-star reviews have been submitted to Yelp by people as far away as California, claiming Avon Florist is “homophobic.” Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act allows companies and individuals to use the expression of religious freedom as a defense for denying service to others in court. Multiple businesses in Indiana have reportedly cited their religious objections as the reason for refusing to serve same-sex individuals or events in recent years.
