POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – The world is celebrating a slithering creature that most people fear – Monday, July 16 is World Snake Day. Some cultures revere the serpents while others simply keep them as pets. Now, you can even get a snake massage . CBS2’s Vanessa Murdock witnessed her first snake massage with Serpentessa, a snake priestess at Dreaming Goddess in Poughkeepsie. “Just enjoy them and feel them,” Serpentessa tells Pam Kelly of Pleasant Valley, New York. Serpentessa guided three boa constrictors, some longer than six feet, all over Kelly’s body. She can’t force them to do anything — each serpent chooses its own path, gliding over Kelly, wrapping around her feet, her head, even resting on her neck. “They tone and stimulate the vagus nerve in our body and that releases endorphins and oxytocin,” Serpentessa said. those are the feel good hormones.” Serpentessa has specialized as an interspecies facilitator for 25 years. Murdock asked her how safe this is. “There are no guarantees with a wild animal,” she says. “You are the one who’s going to choose whether if it’s is safe for you or not. So no one has ever been hurt by one of my boa constrictors.” Serpentessa says people typically reach out to her for one of three reasons: healing, empowerment or to get over their fear of snakes. In the end, Kelly said the session helped. “It was a lot calmer and peaceful than I thought it would be,” said Kelly. “There was a point it felt like they were just hugging me around the shoulders. It just felt very calm – like I could fall asleep.” Kelly’s ease on the table gave Alan Lesner, the courage to try it. He barely flinched as a snake went in for a kiss. As for Murdock, she forced herself to at least sit with a snake, the only animal she says she’s ever really feared. Within a few minutes, she could finally relax, breathe normally and even smile for a picture with Serpentessa and one of her snakes. Serpentessa also offers snake massages in the city. An hour and 15 minute massage starts at $300.

ST. LOUIS (CBSNews)  — A St. Louis jury on Thursday awarded nearly $4.7 billion in total damages to 22 women and their families after they claimed asbestos in Johnson & Johnson talcum powder contributed to their ovarian cancer. It was the first case against the company that focused on asbestos in the powder. The jury announced the $4.14 billion award in punitive damages shortly after awarding $550 million in compensatory damages after a six-week trial in St. Louis Circuit Court. “It’s actually one of the most extraordinary amounts of money in punitive damages,” CBS News legal expert Rikki Kliemann said Friday. Johnson & Johnson called the verdict the result of an unfair process that allowed the women to sue the company in Missouri despite most of them not living in the state and said it would appeal, as it has in previous cases that found for women who sued the company. “Johnson & Johnson remains confident that its products do not contain asbestos and do not cause ovarian cancer and intends to pursue all available appellate remedies,” spokeswoman Carol Goodrich said. Mark Lanier, lead counsel for the plaintiffs, said in a statement that Johnson & Johnson had covered up evidence of asbestos in their products for more than 40 years. The plaintiffs’ lawyers said asbestos fibers and talc particles were found in the ovarian tissues of many of the women. “We hope this verdict will get the attention of the J&J board and that it will lead them to better inform the medical community and the public about the connection between asbestos, talc, and ovarian cancer,” Lanier said. “The company should pull talc from the market before causing further anguish, harm, and death from a terrible disease.” During closing arguments on Wednesday, Lanier told the jurors this case was the first where jurors saw documents showing that Johnson & Johnson knew its products contained asbestos and didn’t warn consumers, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported . The company has been sued by more than 9,000 women who claim its talcum powder contributed to their ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has consistently denied that its products can be linked to the cancer. Goodrich said the verdict awarding all the women the same amount despite differences in their circumstances showed evidence in the case was overwhelmed by prejudice created when so many plaintiffs are allowed to sue the company in one lawsuit. “Every verdict against Johnson & Johnson in this court that has gone through the appeals process has been reversed and the multiple errors present in this trial were worse than those in the prior trials which have been reversed,” she said. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said punitive damage awards are limited by state law to five times the amount of compensatory damages awarded and defense lawyers probably would file a motion to reduce the award. Six of the 22 plaintiffs in the latest trial have died from ovarian cancer. Five plaintiffs were from Missouri, with others from states that include Arizona, New York, North Dakota, California, Georgia, the Carolinas and Texas. One of the plaintiffs, Gail Ingham, 73, of O’Fallon, Missouri, told The Post-Dispatch she was diagnosed with stage-3 ovarian cancer in 1985 and underwent chemotherapy treatments, surgeries and drug treatments for a year before being declared cancer free in the early 1990s. Ingham used baby powder for decades. After court let out, she told reporters, “”The money really isn’t the important part. It’s for woman to learn about what’s in Talc and get it off there. Starbucks To Eliminate Plastic Straws By 2020

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) —  Plastic straws seem to be becoming a thing of the past and Starbucks is joining the trend. The coffee chain announced Monday that it would be eliminating all single-use plastic straws by the year 2020. Instead, Starbucks said it will use a strawless lid that it designed, developed, and manufactured. It will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea, and espresso beverages. (credit: Starbucks Coffee Company) If you’re bent on still using a straw for your drink, don’t worry, Starbucks says it will begin offering straws made out of alternative material for customers upon request. The company cited environmental threats to the ocean and estimated this move will get rid of more than one billion plastic straws per year. Just a week ago, Seattle banned plastic drinking straws and utensils. Similar proposals are being considered in places like New York and San Francisco. The push to ban plastic straws gained traction after a viral video in 2015 showed rescuers removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle’s nose in graphic detail. While plastic drinking straws have become one of the more high-profile environmental issues, they make up only about 4 percent of the plastic trash by number of pieces, and far less by weight. Straws add up to about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of plastic waste that ends up in waters around the globe each year. In February, Dunkin’ Donuts said it would eliminate polystyrene foam cups from its stores by 2020. McDonald’s also said this year that it would use only recycled or other environmentally friendly materials for its soda cups, Happy Meal boxes and other packaging by 2025. The strawless lids will begin to appear in Seattle and Vancouver Starbucks this fall, with phased rollouts within the U.S. and Canada next year. A global rollout of the strawless lids will follow, beginning in Europe where they will be used in some stores in France and the Netherlands, as well as in the United Kingdom.
