MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (CBS Miami/CBSLA) — One person was hurt when a building collapsed in Florida’s Miami Beach just after 10 a.m. Monday morning. The former Marlborough House Condominium, a 13-story building, was in the process of being demolished when it suddenly came tumbling down. A construction worker, identified as Samuel Landis, 42, was struck by a boulder and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. “The building was falling, I could see smoke coming towards us and a boulder the size of the front end of a car flew across the street. The boulder hit him in the center of the chest and threw him five feet,” said neighbor Rodolfo Pages. “It’s truly fortunate no one else was hurt,” he added. Video from a nearby construction company captured the collapse of the building. Pages said residents were warned to watch out. “The only time they said something to us was when they said put something over your nose to avoid debris and smoke,” Pages said. “The building collapsed towards Collins Avenue and debris started flying towards us.” “I was scared. I saw people running and covering their faces,” Urrutia said. “This was scary. This was scary. This was not normal. You don’t see this every day,” she added. Dozens of police officers and firefighter paramedics rushed to the scene and sealed off all traffic for blocks, fearing the situation could be much worse. A police search dog scoured the debris for signs of life or other victims but did not find any. “The construction company did a roll call and found that everyone was accounted for,” said Chief Virgil Fernandez of Miami Beach Fire Rescue. The company had a permit for the demolition but did not have a permit for an implosion, according to the Miami Beach police. Ana Salgueiro, director of the city’s building department, said they had tried to ask for a permit to be imploded and they were denied. They had a standard demolition permit. The demolition was scheduled to begin Monday as they dismantled the building piece by piece.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A total of 12 buildings near the site last week’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron district have now been declared safe allowing businesses to reopen and residents are returning home. For those in the 33 buildings still closed, the excruciating wait lingered on. “It’s very unsettling,” said David Base, one of those affected when the blast near 21st Street and Fifth Avenue sent asbestos-filled steam and pieces of the pipe flying. “We really have no indication how long will be before we can fully return and actually live in our homes again,” he said. Crews have been spraying the facades of buildings to wash off any asbestos. Elizabeth Reid lives close to the accident site. Two community briefings were scheduled for Monday night at the nearby Clinton School to answer questions for residents. The city is also providing live updates as buildings are cleared for reoccupation through information on the city’s website . In addition to local residents, traffic on the street saw bus service back Monday along Fifth Avenue near the blast site.

TORONTO (CBSNewYork) — Police in Toronto say they are looking into every possible motive after a suspect opened fire outside a row of restaurants, leaving at least two victims dead and 12 others hurt. Cellphone video captured the gunfire ringing out into the street around 10 p.m. local time Sunday. “I thought it was fireworks at first because it was rapid fire and then pause and some more fire. We didn’t know what it was. Saw people starting to run,” said witness John Tulloch. The bustling Greektown neighborhood was brought to a halt as witnesses say the shooting, said to be a man dressed in black clothing and a black hat, began spraying bullets — at one point, into a restaurant. “It just seemed very surreal,” said Tulloch. Moments later, police confronted the suspect. “Police had identified as a suspect at that particular point in time,” said Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders. “There was an exchange of gunfire.” When it was all over, the suspect was dead. Investigators say the bullets injured 14 people, killing one of them Sunday. The second victim died early Monday morning, Toronto police spokesman Meaghan Gray said. Among the injured was a girl who was aged 8 or 9. She is said to be in critical condition. “This is so heartbreaking,” said Toronto City Council member Mary Fragedakis. “The victims and their loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers. I cannot imagine what they’re going through.” “This is an attack against innocent families and against our city,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory. Police say they are still working to determine a motive, but law enforcement officials tell CBS News that they do not believe the shooting was terror-related. “I’m looking at every single possible motive,” said Saunders. “When you have this many people that are struck by gunfire, it’s a grave concern. I certainly want to find out exactly what it is and so I’m not closing any doors or chapters on this and I certainly don’t want to speculate as well.” In Canada, gun ownership is licensed by the federal government. Owners must pass a background check but there is no limit on how many weapons a person can own. The city’s mayor says the region has a gun problem. “You’ve heard me ask the question why anybody would need buy ten or 20 guns, which they can lawfully do under the current laws,” he said. “There are far too many people carrying around guns in our city and our region who should not have them.” Some city lawmakers say they have information that suggests the suspected shooter was emotionally disturbed, but police have not confirmed that. Back in April, police said a suspect was arrested for deliberately driving a rented van down a crowded street in a Toronto business district. Ten people were killed.

At this time, the conditions of the victims are unknown. A young girl is among those who were shot, police said on Twitter. Witnesses are being transported by buses to multiple offices to speak with investigators, Toronto Police Sgt. Glenn Russell told CNN. There are several shooting scenes detectives are processing. Authorities said the shooting began outside of a Toronto restaurant around 10 p.m. Sunday. The victims have been sent to trauma centers throughout the city, Russell says. Eight people have been transported to various hospitals — six to trauma hospitals, one to a pediatric trauma center and one to a local hospital, Toronto Paramedic Services told CNN partner CTV. Two more people were to be transported from the scene to a local hospital — making it a total of 10 patients so far, the Canadian station reported. Three more people were reported hurt in the attack. A witness who was standing near the scene told CTV that he heard about 20 shots and the sound of the weapon being reloaded repeatedly. “And then, I saw the carnage as I ran down the street here to kind of follow the gunfire,” the man told the station, who described the scene as “pretty crazy.” “I saw at least four people shot,” he said. Toronto Fire Services is assisting with efforts, Toronto Fire Capt. Adrian Ratushniak tells CNN. Officials are expecting to issue a press release in the coming hours, according to police. STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — A Colorado artist has reached an agreement with billionaire Elon Musk over a copyright dispute involving a unicorn passing gas. Potter Tom Edwards was initially flattered when Musk tweeted a photo of a mug with his design showing a unicorn’s flatulence powering a car. Edwards said he sold about 50 mugs with the exposure. But when Edwards found out Musk used his art to promote an operating system for Tesla, the electric car company owned by Musk, he felt he was being short-changed. Musk later deleted the tweet. In May, Edwards’ lawyer sent a letter to Tesla asking that his client be compensated. On Saturday, Musk tweeted a screenshot of Edwards’ website reading “Copyright Issue: RESOLVED!” Edwards wrote the following message on his site: “I am happy to report that we have reached an agreement with Tesla that resolves our issues in a way that everyone feels good about! It’s clear there were some misunderstandings that led to this escalating, but I’m just glad that everything has been cleared up. I’ve always been a Tesla fan, and I’m looking forward to getting back to making pots and selling them in my online store.” Musk tweeted that it would be “lame” if Edwards sued him for money. TORONTO (CBSNewYork/AP) — A man shot 14 people, killing one of them, in a lively Toronto neighborhood before dying after an exchange of gunfire with police late Sunday, police said. Police Chief Mark Saunders said the shooting in the city’s Greektown neighborhood was not random and he did not rule out terrorism as a motive. “Other than the shooter we have a young lady that is deceased,” the police chief said. Saunders also said a 9-year-old was in critical condition. He said the suspect used a handgun. A video from one witness shows a man dressed in black clothes and a black hat walking quickly and firing three shots from the sidewalk into at least one shop or restaurant. Toronto’s Greektown is a lively residential area with crowded Greek restaurants and cafes. The condition of the other victims was not known yet, police spokesman Mark Pugash said. John Tulloch said he and his brother had just gotten out of their car when he heard about 20 to 30 gunshots. “We just ran. We saw people starting to run so we just ran,” he said. An army of police, paramedics and other first responders soon descended on the scene, while area residents, some in their pajamas, emerged from their homes to see what was happening. Toronto Councillor Paula Fletcher told CP24 she heard that the gunman was emotionally disturbed. “It’s not gang related. It looks like someone who is very disturbed,” Fletcher said. Councillor Mary Fragedakis also said she heard the gunman was disturbed. Fletcher said for this to happen in an area where families gather for dinner is a tragedy. Mass shootings are rare in Canada’s largest city. “We were so use to living in a city where these things didn’t happen,” Toronto Mayor John Tory said. “But there are things that happen nowadays and they are just unspeakable.” This past weekend Toronto police deployed dozens of additional officers to deal with a recent spike in gun violence in the city. Tory said the city has a gun problem. “Guns are too readily available to too many people,” Tory said. Police urged people to come forward with video or witness testimony. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – More streets opened up and nine buildings were cleared for re-occupancy Sunday as hazardous debris cleanup continued in the area around Thursday’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron district. Many people evacuated were happy to return home for the start of the work week, while others wondered about when they’d be allowed back and how they’d be compensated for their displacement. Photos: Massive Steam Pipe Explosion In Manhattan’s Flatiron District Firefighters sprayed the facades of buildings along Fifth Avenue to wash off any asbestos from the steam-pipe explosion earlier this week, and many tenants are now allowed to return to their homes. The Department of Environmental Protection and NYC Health Department are conducting the interior investigations. The blast near 21st Street and Fifth Avenue sent asbestos-filled steam and pieces of the pipe flying. Mayor’s spokesperson Eric Phillips tweeted Sunday that “on compensation from ConEd for displaced steam pipe explosion residents, the Mayor agrees that $500 will likely not be good enough. We’ll be pushing ConEd to up that payment.” The $500 doesn't preclude anyone from submitting a claim for other related expenses. It was to provide immediate help to those who were displaced. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said there was progress, but it shouldn’t be rushed if it meant compromising anyone’s safety. “I want to make sure it’s done correctly,” she said. “I know it’s really hard when you’re out of your home and your business but you don’t wanna be sick.” Crews on Saturday collected the water and filtered it before releasing it into catch basins. The difficult cleanup was made even riskier by the heavy rains. Workers used sandbags to line the contaminated area in hopes of preventing dangerous material from seeping out into storm sewers. RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) – An armed suspect is dead after a pursuit that began in Hemet and ended amid gunfire in a busy shopping area in Riverside Friday night. The incident began at about 7:30 p.m., when Hemet police went to the home of a man to investigate a report that shots had been fired in a field earlier in the week. While in the area, officers noticed the suspect’s Chrysler convertible in the area of Kirby Street and Devonshire Avenue. When officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, the car sped away, prompting a pursuit. The chase wound its way westbound on Devonshire and south onto California Avenue. While driving on California Avenue, police said, the suspect fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers. The pursuit then made its way into the city of Riverside, where Riverside police took over. “We believe that at least twice during the pursuit, out in either their city or the county, that the suspect fired shots at the pursuing officers,” Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback told reporters. No officers were injured. The pursuit came to an end in the area of California and Arlington avenues, which is near several stores, including a Sears and a Ross Dress for Less. Witness Marie Lua was driving in the area with her family when she their car got caught up in the midst of the chase. “We were driving down Arlington, and we just saw probably 15, 20 cop cars just pass us,” Lua said. Lua said she watched as gunfire erupted. “I had my 5-year-old child in the car, there was nothing I could do,” Lua said. “So we just stopped our vehicle and pretty much just watched everyone shoot at him, and I don’t know if he shot back.” The suspect was found dead in his car at the conclusion of the pursuit. His name was not released. It’s unclear if he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was killed by police. “It’s unsafe, and they could have went about it in kind of a safer way, before he actually hit traffic and they started shooting, while he was still in motion,” Lua said. The investigation into the case is ongoing.

REDLANDS (CBSLA) — A woman is in custody after she left her two small children in her car and refusing to break her window to free them. The incident happened Saturday afternoon at the Mountain Grove Shopping Center in Redlands, where witnesses spotted panicked mother Danielle Sulprizio in the parking lot. “I overheard her tell her husband on the phone, ‘I just locked the kids in the car. I was getting the baby’s bottle,’” retail worker Demi Demaio told CBS2 News. Another worker Moriah Madrid saw a distressed Sulprizio and called 911. That’s when she said the mother told her to hang up the phone. “I was, like, ‘I’m not gonna hang up the call,’” Madrid said. She added Sulprizio didn’t want to break her car’s window to take out the children even though the interior of the vehicle registered a sweltering 138 degress, according to Redlands police. “I felt like, ‘Oh, my God! This baby’s dead,’” said Madrid. Witnesses told Redlands police Cpl. Breanna Herrera the children had been in the car for about 15 minutes when she arrived. She ended up smashing the car window to render aid. “The newborn, when I reached into the car seat to try to yank it out, he wasn’t moving or anything,” Madrid said. “The baby wasn’t moving at all. The baby wasn’t crying, the baby’s eyes were not open, the baby’s body was so red.[…] She cared more about her windows than her babies, it was just what got me really upset,” Madrid said, appearing to become emotional. The children were taken to a local hospital and were in stable condition. Sulprizio was arrested for child endangerment. The children were taken into the custody of Child Protective Services. Cpl. Herrera and fellow officers were honored by the City of Redlands for their work on Wednesday. According to KidsAndCars.org , 27 children under the age of 14 have died in hot cars in 2018 alone.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — For the first time ever, real women will be put on a pedestal in Central Park . After creating 23 statues of men, the city is now designing the first-ever statue for women. On Thursday, the city showed off a small replica of the future monument which honors women’s rights pioneers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. The full statue will be unveiled in 2020 on the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. “It’s going be in Central Park on this mall, with all the other men that have been in the park for many many years,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. “It’s a big deal for all us here in New York, and for the women of New York.” The statue will stand along the Literary Walk on the Mall, which spans from 66th Street to 72nd Street.

STILLWATER, Okla. (CBS Local) – A 107-year-old from Oklahoma is being remembered after having one final birthday wish fulfilled. Myda Lewis passed away on July 16, just weeks after a very special celebration was held in the city of Stillwater. Lewis, who was born in 1911, said her only wish was to ride in a convertible in a parade. Word spread of Westhaven Nursing and Rehabilitation’s plan to make Lewis’ wish come true quickly. By the time the senior’s 107th birthday arrived on June 21, a full-fledged parade complete with a police escort and thousands of spectators filled downtown Stillwater. Myda Lewis’ birthday wish was to ride a convertible in a parade. Shortly after word got out, the community joined in and thousands came out to celebrate her 107 years! Lewis was still driving up until the age of 102 and was still living independently with her 87-year-old daughter until last year. “She was an amazing woman,” nurse Laura Royce said. “I loved every minute that I spent with her.”

CORONA (CBSLA) – Firefighters continue to battle a 250-acre fire which sparked Thursday on the edge of the Cleveland National Forest in Corona, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. (CBS2) The Skyline Fire broke out in the area of Skyline Drive and Burrero Way at around 3:10 p.m. Thursday near a popular hiking spot. As of 9 a.m. Friday, it remained only 5 percent contained, according to CAL Fire. Steep terrain and hot temperatures are creating challenges for firefighters. Overnight Thursday, a decrease in wind and an uptick in humidity offered some respite to crews. As of Friday morning, more than 1,500 structures remain threatened, CAL Fire reported. However, no homes have been damaged or destroyed and there were no injuries. Evacuation orders were lifted for several neighborhoods Thursday evening. About 50 homes remained under mandatory evacuation orders in the Maybeth Canyon and Orchard Glen neighborhoods Friday, including the 1400 block of Burrero Way, the 1400 block of Burnett Circle, the 1400 block of Folson Circle, the 1400 block of Brannon Circle, the 3500 block of Rawley Street and the 1400 block of Gareth Circle. Foothill Parkway is closed from Lincoln Avenue to Paseo Grande. About 300 firefighters with CAL Fire, the Corona Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service are battling the blaze. A Red Cross evacuation shelter at Corona High School was closed due to a lack of demand, the city reported. The cause of the fire is unknown.
