World Kindness Day Marked With Virtual Celebrations, Acts Of Kindness

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Friday is World Kindness Day , and it’s being celebrated across the globe. Many would agree we need it more than ever this year. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, dancing is how many have celebrated World Kindness Day for nearly 20 years. This year, it’s gone virtual. It is celebrated worldwide on Nov. 13 and promotes the importance of being kind to each other. Karen Salmansohn has written dozens of books on happiness and kindness and says it’s as easy as listening. “Talk less, listen more. Put your phone away. Just a simple act of kindness, just really letting people know that you’re there for them,” she said. Food is another way to get that smile. “You could bake something for somebody, or here in New York, you could order up a delivery and surprise somebody with it,” Salmansohn said. When it comes to kids, we spend so much time making sure they’re behaving, Karen says it’s important to let them know when they’re doing the right thing. “Catch them being kind and to let them know that, wow, that’s great, I love that you just said that right now,” Salmansohn said. It’s also key to be kind to yourself. Take a break and do what makes you happy. Exercise and meditation can help clear your mind. Getting enough sleep is part of self-care. Before bed, making a list of three things you’re grateful about can help you focus on the positive. Kindness is something you can practice everyday. Everyone also loves to be appreciated, so making a habit of saying “thank you” is one of the greatest acts of kindness. NJ Woman Who Survived Crash That Killed Husband, 4 Daughters Speaks Out

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey woman who survived a crash that killed her husband and four daughters on a Delaware highway is speaking out for the first time. The crash happened earlier this month as the family from Teaneck was headed home from a vacation in Ocean City, Maryland. Authorities said a pickup truck heading in the wrong direction on Route 1 in Delaware collided with their minivan, killing 61-year-old Audi Trinidad and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. Their mother, Mary Rose, was the only one to survive. Authorities say the four girls were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. “I lost my family last July 6 because of a man in a truck crossed a wide grassy median and struck our car coming in the wrong direction,” Mary Rose said at a news conference Friday. “He is still walking free and I have to bury my husband and four daughters.” So far, criminal charges have not yet been filed in the case. Mary Rose said Friday that she wants justice for her family and to see the driver of the pickup “criminally prosecuted.” “All my broken bones and injuries will heal but not the unbearable pain my heart,” she said. “Now that they’re all gone, I have nothing to look forward to but justice for them.” Attorneys for the family say they’ve been told the investigation into the crash is “complicated” and may take a few months. Mary Rose, who spent her life helping others as a nurse, won’t be able to hold a funeral for her family until she’s well enough to attend. “She’s got a broken left arm with infections, both knees are fractured with surgery, she has fractured ribs, fractured shoulders and a fractured right hip,” lawyer Diane Lucianna said. Doctors say it may be weeks before she walks again.

New DNA Testing Helps Identify Remains Of 9/11 Victim Nearly 17 Years Later

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – It has been nearly 17 years since the September 11 th terror attacks , and remains of one of the victims have just been identified. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, the medical examiner’s officer was able to make the ID through a new kind of DNA testing. More than 2,700 people were killed when the Twin Towers were attacked, including 26-year-old Scott Johnson who was working as a securities analyst at an investment bank on the 89 th floor of the South Tower. The Montclair, New Jersey man was a big ice hockey player, so his family donated a hockey puck in remembrance to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. You can also find his name at the South Memorial Pool. The only thing found at the scene for his family to hold onto was his wallet – until now. This week, the medical examiner’s office announced it has identified Johnson’s bone through new DNA testing, where special chemicals are used to remove DNA from the bone fragments. One of the main difficulties in the process of going through 22,000 remains is how degraded the fragments are. “These remains went through, at Ground Zero, things like fire and water, jet fuel, sunlight, mold and bacteria – these will all destroy DNA,” said Mark Desire, of the medical examiner’s office. Johnson is now the 1,642 nd person to be identified. So far, 60 percent of those who died at the Twin Towers have been identified through remains, and each time a family is notified, it hits home for the forensics team. “It gets very emotional each time, and that relationship and the ‘thank yous’ and the hugging, it’s a very special project,” Desire said. He said the office made a promise to 9/11 families to keep searching for the remains of their loved ones, and he hopes more advances in DNA testing will allow them to keep that promise. The medical examiner’s office says the last ID was made in August of last year, but the victim’s family did not want the name released.

Blueberry Picking Season Peaks In Garden State

PEMBERTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – It’s National Blueberry Month and peak season for the popular fruit. CBS2’s Cindy Hsu visited Haines Berry Farm in Pemberton, New Jersey, where people can pick their own. “I make jams with them, pies. I like them with sour cream, which a lot of people don’t like, but I personally like them with sour cream,” blueberry lover Karen Ayrer told Hsu, adding the bigger the berry, the juicer. The farm had everything from blueberry mustard to blueberry honey and blueberry soap. The commercial growing of blueberries started in South Jersey thanks to a local woman who began shipping them in 1916. “Elizabeth White was the first person to cultivate blueberries at Whites Bog over in Browns Mills, which is only a few miles from here,” farm owner Timothy Haines said. It’s now the Garden State’s No. 1 crop, with a production value of nearly $84 million a year. The United States is responsible for 90 percent of the world’s blueberry supply, and New Jersey ranks in the top six places nationwide when it comes to blueberry production. Haines’s grandfather bought the farm in 1954 and showed Hsu the best way to choose blueberries once they’re in the store. He said make sure they’re all blue – you don’t want any green or red ones hiding in there – and look for a white coating around the berry. “They should have this white bloom on them, and that’s a naturally occurring yeast. And it just makes them more attractive,” he explained. There should be no juice on the bottom of the container. If there is, it’s a sign that the berries have been around too long. Haines said there are hundreds of different varieties of blueberries, but the most popular are Duke and Blue Crop. Jeff Devends, of Toms River, said he loves them all. “Luckily, they don’t weigh us before we start, because we’ll probably eat more blueberries than we actually pick,” he said. Blueberry season in New Jersey lasts through the end of July, so you still have a few weeks to enjoy the locally grown berries. Experts say blueberries last around a week in the refrigerator. But if you freeze them, they’ll last a year.
