NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is breaking barriers and inspiring many people, especially of the younger generation, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported Monday. Harris will become the first woman, first Black and first South Asian Vice President. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” Harris said in a speech after President-elect Joe Biden was projected to win the White House. “She’s done this and that means that we can do this, too,” said Sophia Anikewich, a 6th grader at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle . This generation is looking to Harris, who honored the women who came before her in the speech Saturday by wearing suffragette white. “I stand on their shoulders,” Harris said. MORE: Cheering, Celebrations Erupt In Streets Of New York After Joe Biden Projected To Win Presidency “The future builds on the past. Without these breakthroughs, you’re not gonna see more change,” said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. Walsh said Harris reaching the second highest office in the country is more than just symbolic. “It means that at that powerful table, where decisions are being made, there is somebody who sees the world through a gendered lens, and through a lens of race, and that will have an impact on policy,” Walsh said. “I think that no matter which side of the aisle that you align with, it’s impossible to deny how absolutely incredible this accomplishment was for all women across the board,” said Hailey Dorsainvil, a senior at Ursuline. It’s “herstory” in the making. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two newborn baby boys were found dead in the Bronx on Monday. It was a tragic and hectic scene in the Claremont section of the borough. CBS2’s Ali Bauman has learned police are speaking to multiple people at the scene, trying to piece together how the babies died and who their parents are. Sources told CBS2 the building’s superintendent found the babies wrapped in brown paper outside behind the building. Emergency responders were then called at around 2 p.m. to an apartment building on College Avenue and East 171st Street. When they arrived police found the two newborn boys unconscious and abandoned in an outdoor common area in the back of the building, which is just beside Claremont Park. An ambulance took them to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. “This is very, very early on in our investigation. We’re asking the public for help. If you can, if you know something, can you please call 1-800 577-TIPS with any information you have. It would really help the investigation here,” an NYPD spokesman said. Police said it’s unclear if the babies are related. Officers were canvassing the area for surveillance video to see if they can identify the two boys and find out what exactly happened to them. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Announces Indoor Dining Restrictions; ‘We Have To Shake Off The Pandemic Fatigue’
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday announced bars and restaurants statewide must close indoor dining by 10 p.m. starting Nov. 12. Outdoor dining, takeout and delivery service may continue past 10 p.m., the governor said at a coronavirus briefing. “Looking at the data, we are taking surgical steps that we hope will help mitigate the current increasing rate of spread. No one up here wants to take the type of broad and all encompassing actions like those we had to take in March,” said Murphy. MORE: New Jersey Business Owners Bracing For Tightened Restrictions As COVID-19 Cases Continue To Climb Statewide Indoor service may not resume until 5 a.m., Murphy said. The indoor capacity limit remains at 25 percent. Casinos are also required to follow the late-night, indoor dining restrictions, which will not impact gaming operations. “We have to shake off the pandemic fatigue that I know we all feel. I feel it as well,” said Murphy. “We have to get back into the mindset that saw us crush the curve in the spring.” Watch Gov. Murphy’s Press Conference: Seating at bars will be prohibited during all hours when the new restrictions take effect. The governor said restaurants may place tables closer than six feet apart if they are separated by barriers in order to accommodate customers who would ordinarily sit at the bar. Officials said there is evidence that people sitting at the bar, having drinks and close conversations, are spreading the virus. In addition to the indoor restrictions, Murphy announced restaurants will be allowed to construct heated tents – or “bubbles” – around outdoor tables as long as they are limited to one group of diners each and are thoroughly cleaned. The announcements came as COVID rates rise across the Tri-State Area . New Jersey is recording an average of more than 2,300 new cases per day. Hospitalizations are also climbing, too. MORE: Cuomo Says Managing Infection Rates Will Be Critical As New York’s Coronavirus Numbers Climb The hospitality industry has been ravaged by the pandemic. Monday’s announcement was yet another round of bad news for Teddy Perides, who owns Biagio’s Ristorante in Paramus. “I’ll be honest with you, my stomach, it turned, because we though we’d go back to normal. Little by little. This was like we got hit with a sledgehammer,” Perides told CBS2’s Nick Caloway. While most customers finish eating by 10 p.m., closing early is devastating for revenue from the bar and private events. It could have massive impacts statewide. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said COVID doesn’t know what time it is, and curfews on restaurants could do more harm than good. “It seems to me that if you put restrictions or curfews on restaurants, you’re only going to be pushing more people into the small gatherings in the home area, which is a big spreader,” Fulop said. The new restrictions will also affect some youth sports, which must travel between different states in order to compete. Starting Nov. 12, all interstate competition for indoor youth sports up to and including high school are banned. 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Massachusetts, Felt In CT, Long Island, USGS Says
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/CNN) — A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Bliss Corner, Massachusetts, on Sunday morning, according to preliminary information from the US Geological Survey . The quake was felt more than 100 miles away, in Connecticut , New Hampshire and Sound Beach , New York, on Long Island , the USGS says. According to a USGS map, the quake struck off Mishaum Point , a peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts that extends into Buzzards Bay. (Credit: US Geological Survey) The epicenter appears to be about four miles south-southwest of Bliss Corner, which is located in the town of Dartmouth, just south of New Bedford and about 35 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and the USGS said there is a low likelihood of casualties or economic losses. There is no threat of tsunami, the National Weather Service says. Small earthquakes strike New England and Long Island roughly twice a year, while moderate ones hit the region every few decades, the USGS says. The most recent New England quake to cause considerable damage was a 5.6 magnitude that shook central New Hampshire in 1940, the survey says. NYPD: Bronx Suspect Got Into 89-Year-Old Woman’s Apartment Through Unlocked Door, Robbed Her In Bedroom
(credit: NYPD) NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The NYPD is trying to find a man accused of entering an elderly woman’s Bronx apartment and robbing her. It happened near Beck Street and Longwood Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to police. The suspect allegedly got into the 89-year-old woman’s ground-floor apartment through the back door, which was apparently unlocked, police said. “It has been tough. I keep repeating it in my mind over and over again … I’m not a good sleeper and I was about to start reading and I hadn’t turned my light on yet and I saw someone come by my bedroom door with a flashlight. I thought it was my son,” the victim told CBS2’s Cory James exclusively. But it was not her son, who lives upstairs. When the suspect encountered the woman in her bedroom, he grabbed her arm, threw her on the bed and demanded money, police said. The victim gave him her purse, police added. “I thought I could grab out a $20 (bill) and give it to him, but he took the whole purse. There was $100,” she said. The NYPD released this surveillance video of the suspect: The suspect fled through the back door, leaving the woman recovering from hip and leg surgery with bruises on her leg and arm. Neighbors said they were disturbed by what happened. “It really is so disgusting to hear something like that,” Lydia Santiago said. “There’s no courtesy, no respect for the elders,” Juan Berrios added. “I’m glad he didn’t hurt me more. He bruised me, but he didn’t do anything more. At 89, I could be hurt very badly and I wasn’t,” the victim said. Police believe the suspect is in his 50s and approximately 6 feet tall. The victim admitted that the door to her apartment was unlocked. She said it was a one-time mistake that she will not make again. NYPD investigators want the public to take a good look at the suspect and if you know him you are asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). As New Yorkers Tell it, There’s Nothing Like A Day At The Beach On 75-Degree Day In November
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There wasn’t a cloud in the sky on Sunday. Even though it’s November, it felt like a summer day. The weather was so nice, some people hit the beach, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported. Hoops left them feeling heated as temperatures climbed to the mid-70s at Pelham Bay Park . Jorge Alvarado brought sons Indio and Nauel. “We decided to get all sweaty and just work out a little,” said Indio, 16. “Shoot the ball, sweat a little instead of being stuck in the house. We’re enjoying it,” Jorge said. There were balmy breezes and bare skin in the Bronx and some people were wondering if it was all really happening. “If feels wrong. It feels very wrong. But it’s nice to enjoy it, though,” said Stephanie Campos of Mount Vernon. Campos brought 5-year-old daughter Ashley to Orchard Beach . “I like to be here at the beach,” Ashley said. “November, we don’t go to the beach in November, but, yeah, I want to go to the beach and here we are,” added Ramona Lopez of Kew Gardens. Kite flying and running around made 9-year-old A.J. Defonzo’s day. “The sun is very hot, but it’s a good day. I like being at the beach, playing with the sand,” A.J. said. “It’s beautiful. It’s like spring right now,” added Peter Williams, manager of CYC Fitness in Manhattan. The unusually warm weather that started Friday bolstered outdoor exercise classes and lured runners out of homes and out of jackets. But keep those coats handy. As New Yorkers Tell it, There’s Nothing Like A Day At The Beach On 75-Degree Day In November
By Mark McIntyre, CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer Good Sunday morning everyone! We’re off to a crisp start across the region under clear skies. Expect sunshine to prevail once again with unseasonably warm as temps once again will reach the low/mid 70s. Tomorrow will be another very nice day with mostly sunny skies… but it won’t be quite as warm with temps “only” topping out around 70. Things start to change a bit Tuesday with some more clouds and a slight risk for late-day drizzle… but overall another nice day with temps in the upper 60s! Wednesday looks to be the best bet for rain as a frontal system moves through… until then, enjoy the sunshine! Giants’ Logan Ryan Credits Team Trainer For Catching Wife’s Potentially Life-Threatening Ectopic Pregnancy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Monday night was potentially life-changing for New York Giants player Logan Ryan , but it had nothing to do with the game at MetLife Stadium , CBS2’s Steve Overmyer reported. After the game, Ryan had a phone call with his wife Ashley, who had flown to Florida to check on their house. “She was telling me about some pains she had in her stomach. She wanted to sleep it off. She was in extreme pain, but she said she’d wait until morning,” Ryan said. Ryan was hurt during the game , so he was still at the stadium during the call at 1 a.m., and he was sitting right next to trainer Justin Maher. “He said, ‘No, she needs to go to the ER,’” Ryan told Overmyer. MORE: Giants’ Rally Dies On Failed 2-Point Try; Brady, Bucs Hold On Ashley had just taken antacids to ease her stomach pain. A trip to the emergency room seemed a bit extreme, but she heeded Maher’s advice, which proved to be life-altering. “They ended up catching… ectopic pregnancy,” Ryan said. Ashley wrote in an Instagram post that Logan smiled when he heard the word “pregnancy” and the thought of adding to their family. But, an ectopic pregnancy is not viable, and potentially life-threatening. “The egg was in the wrong place in her fallopian tube and it was about to burst,” said Ryan. The couple credits Maher, whose quick thinking was critical. “Telling my wife to go to the ER at 1 a.m. could’ve saved her life,” said Ryan. Ashley is OK and recovering. Giants coach Joe Judge made it clear Logan could fly to Florida to be with his wife – another indication, Ryan said, of how much the Giants care about their players. “If that wasn’t the case, I don’t know if my wife would be here today… I’m extremely grateful for this organization and for Joe, and for everyone to understand things bigger than football,” Ryan said. “Especially this year.” You can get the latest news, sports and weather on our brand new CBS New York app. Download here .

Election 2020: New York Leads Potentially Record Setting Wave Of Republican Women Elected To Congress
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York is on the leading edge of a wave that is likely to sweep a record number of republican woman into Congress. It’s an effort dating back two years, after the opposite result in the 2018 midterms, CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported Thursday. Republican Nicole Malliotakis declared victory in a brutal congressional race on Staten Island and in South Brooklyn. Malliotakis will likely join what could be a record 33 republican woman in the next House of Representatives. New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik helped convince Malliotakis to run. “The story of the 2020 congressional elections is, this is the year of the republican women. We have had smashing success,” Stefanik said. MORE: Election 2020: Malliotakis Declares Victory Over Rose In Contentious Race For 11th Congressional District Stefanik led the charge, creating the Elevate Political Action Committee to recruit and elect GOP woman to Congress after the 2018 midterms left just 13 of them in the House. Their 2020 success, especially in swing districts, is undeniable. Central New York Republican Claudia Tenney lost two years ago, but appears to have won back her seat on Tuesday. A republican woman also defeated former Clinton cabinet secretary Donna Shalala in Florida. Stefanik said doubling the number of women in the Republican caucus is important. “Women are particularly effective communicators… We bring different perspectives as moms, as the people making the majority of their family’s healthcare decisions,” Stefanik said. More Election 2020 Coverage : General Election Results New York Results New Jersey Results Complete Coverage Daniel McCarthy, a political scientist at Manhattanville College, said the GOP focus on electing women was the smart and obvious move. “College educated women in suburbs were turning away from the republicans and becoming democrats… But, if given a choice of a woman running on the republican line, many of those women stayed with the party,” said McCarthy. Stefanik said this can’t be “one and done,” and the effort to diversify the GOP caucus will continue. Even with the GOP’s gains in 2020, there are likely to be more than 80 democratic women in the next Congress.
