There was no immediate comment from Steel, who during her campaign said that she ran to prove a “strong voice in Washington, D.C., who will honor promises made and stand up for us and our values.” Tom Emmer, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, issued a statement congratulating Steel: “California’s 48th District finally has a congresswoman who puts her constituents first. I look forward to her tireless work on behalf of Orange County.”

Downtown LA Finally Breaks 200-Day Streak Of 70-Degree Days

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A chill has finally hit Southern California, snapping a few heat and precipitation records. A cold system out of Canada brought rain, snow, strong winds and cold temperatures to the region Saturday. Saturday’s high temperature was just 62 degrees, making it the first in 200 days where the high temperature in downtown LA did not hit 70 degrees or higher, according to the National Weather Service. The 200-day streak breaks the old record from 1885 by 10 days. Downtown LA also received 0.11 inches of rain Saturday breaking the streak of 172 days without measurable precipitation, the National Weather Service said. The 172-streak is tied for the seventh longest in recording history. The longest streak of days without measurable precipitation was set in 1997 at 219 days. The National Weather says a few locations could also break record low temperatures Monday, including Long Beach, Paso Robles and UCLA.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There wasn’t a cloud in the sky on Sunday. Even though it’s November, it felt like a summer day. The weather was so nice, some people hit the beach, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported. Hoops left them feeling heated as temperatures climbed to the mid-70s at Pelham Bay Park . Jorge Alvarado brought sons Indio and Nauel. “We decided to get all sweaty and just work out a little,” said Indio, 16. “Shoot the ball, sweat a little instead of being stuck in the house. We’re enjoying it,” Jorge said. There were balmy breezes and bare skin in the Bronx and some people were wondering if it was all really happening. “If feels wrong. It feels very wrong. But it’s nice to enjoy it, though,” said Stephanie Campos of Mount Vernon. Campos brought 5-year-old daughter Ashley to Orchard Beach . “I like to be here at the beach,” Ashley said. “November, we don’t go to the beach in November, but, yeah, I want to go to the beach and here we are,” added Ramona Lopez of Kew Gardens. It’s like spring right now,” added Peter Williams, manager of CYC Fitness in Manhattan. The unusually warm weather that started Friday bolstered outdoor exercise classes and lured runners out of homes and out of jackets. But keep those coats handy. 2 Days After Breaking Heat Records, Southern California Expecting Rain, Snow, Gusty Winds

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Just two days after breaking several heat records, cold temperatures, rain, snow and strong, gusty winds are forecast for Southern California. Several cities saw their heat records broken Thursday, including Long Beach, which hit a high of 95 degrees, breaking the previous record high of 93 in 2012. In the Inland Empire, Palm Springs and Idyllwild both reached 98 degrees Thursday, breaking their previous records of 96 in. Thermal also broke its 1988 record of 79 degrees by reaching 80 on Thursday. Meanwhile, Riverside, San Jacinto, Woodland Hills and UCLA all tied their previous high temperature records. But temperatures will start to plummet Friday night thanks to a cold low-pressure system from Canada that is expected to bring rain and mountain snow this weekend. Saturday morning and afternoon rainfall is expected to be the heaviest and most widespread, with another round forecast for Sunday afternoon. Snow levels are also expected to drop as low as 4,000 feet by Sunday night. As much as 12 inches of snow could fall at higher elevations. A high surf advisory that starts at 4 p.m. has also been issued for Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Dangerous rip currents and waves as tall as 8 feet are forecast to pound the coasts all the way down to San Diego County this weekend. A wind advisory has also been issued for the San Bernardino Mountains, Victor Valley, and the deserts. Winds of 15 to 25 mph are forecast, and with gusts of up to 50 mph could blow around unsecure objects, take out tree limbs and cause power outages.

Composite Sketch Of Indecent Exposure Suspect In Long Beach Released

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Police released a composite sketch Wednesday of a man they say exposed himself to a 13-year-old girl in Long Beach. A parent called police to report their daughter had been walking home the afternoon before Halloween in the area of Charlemagne Avenue and Village Road when a man in a car approached her and exposed himself to her while making sexual comments, according to Long Beach police. The suspect then drove away, police said. He was described a white man about 19 to 25 years old, between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall, 170 to 200 pounds, with brown hair and driving a white, older-model two-door sedan with black rims. Anyone with information about the man’s identity or the case can call detectives at (562) 570-7368 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CBS Local) – A Tennessee teen and several other people visiting a Florida beach have been infected with hookworms. Michael Dumas, a 17-year-old from Memphis, was on a mission trip to South Florida with friends when they visited Pompano Beach. Dumas was photographed having a good time and being buried in the sand by his group on June 20. The beach goers didn’t know it would leave the teen covered in scars only days later. Doctors quickly diagnosed him with a severe case of hookworms. At least four other people in Dumas’ group were also infected that day. Michael’s mother, Kelli Dumas, documented the gruesome scene on Facebook as her son’s feet swelled up from the infection and required dermatologists to try to freeze the worms with liquid nitrogen. “He could actually feel the worms moving in his body,” Kelli Dumas said, via WJAX . **WARNING- PHOTOS CONTAIN GRAPHIC CONTENT** According to the CDC, hookworm larva penetrate the skin of humans and infections are usually transmitted by walking barefoot on contaminated soil. The teen has reportedly been left home-bound by the infection and needs to soak in bleach water each day. The Dumas family claims they reached out to county officials in Florida to warn others about the parasites on Pompano Beach, but did not receive any help. “How many people have been on the beach since June 19?” Dumas reportedly asked the Broward County Health Department. “How many people have been on the beach since I called her July 17? She told me when I said ‘I just want you to put a warning sign,’ she said to me ‘That’s not my job.’” Dumas’ Facebook post has been shared over 8,000 times and warns parents to never let their children be buried in beach sand. “The Health Department in Pompano Beach said ‘Everyone knows to wear shoes on the beach because you can get parasites.’ I assured them everyone does NOT KNOW THAT!!” Dumas wrote on social media.

An excessive heat warning in effect since Monday has been extended through 8 p.m. Friday for several inland areas, including the San Fernando, San Gabriel, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains, inland Orange County and the Inland Empire. High temperatures will range from 98 to 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS IN ORANGE COUNTY “That high pressure system is still the dominant feature right now,” CBS2 Meteorologist Amber Lee said. “So that’s what’s going to pump in the hot, dry conditions. Police Officer Accused Of Kicking Woman Who Was 8 Months Pregnant

MIAMI, Fla. (CBS Local) – A Florida police officer was arrested after she allegedly kicked a visibly pregnant woman in Miami Beach. It happened Wednesday night just after 8:30 p.m. Eastern time in the area of Espanola Way and Washington Avenue. North Miami Beach officer Ambar Pacheco reportedly told police she kicked the woman in the stomach after the woman’s boyfriend kicked her sister in the face. “I saw red and beat the s–t out her,” the 26-year-old said, according to her arrest report. Ambar Pacheco (Source: Miami-Dade Corrections) When Miami Beach police arrived, they noticed the woman, who was eight months pregnant, in visible pain. She was taken to Mount Sinai hospital where she delivered a healthy baby. Pacheco has been charged with a felony count of aggravated battery. [H/T CBS Miami ]

High-Rise Condo Complex Suddenly Collapses

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (CBS Miami/CBSLA) — One person was hurt when a building collapsed in Florida’s Miami Beach just after 10 a.m. Monday morning. The former Marlborough House Condominium, a 13-story building, was in the process of being demolished when it suddenly came tumbling down. A construction worker, identified as Samuel Landis, 42, was struck by a boulder and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. “The building was falling, I could see smoke coming towards us and a boulder the size of the front end of a car flew across the street. The boulder hit him in the center of the chest and threw him five feet,” said neighbor Rodolfo Pages. “It’s truly fortunate no one else was hurt,” he added. Video from a nearby construction company captured the collapse of the building. Pages said residents were warned to watch out. “The only time they said something to us was when they said put something over your nose to avoid debris and smoke,” Pages said. “The building collapsed towards Collins Avenue and debris started flying towards us.” “I was scared. I saw people running and covering their faces,” Urrutia said. “This was scary. This was scary. This was not normal. You don’t see this every day,” she added. Dozens of police officers and firefighter paramedics rushed to the scene and sealed off all traffic for blocks, fearing the situation could be much worse. A police search dog scoured the debris for signs of life or other victims but did not find any. “The construction company did a roll call and found that everyone was accounted for,” said Chief Virgil Fernandez of Miami Beach Fire Rescue. The company had a permit for the demolition but did not have a permit for an implosion, according to the Miami Beach police. Ana Salgueiro, director of the city’s building department, said they had tried to ask for a permit to be imploded and they were denied. They had a standard demolition permit. The demolition was scheduled to begin Monday as they dismantled the building piece by piece.

TOWN OF ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Two children were recovering Wednesday night after officials say they were bitten by a shark off Fire Island. The 13-year-old boy was bitten in the water around noon at Atlantique Beach, while the 12-year-old Lola Pollina was bitten around the same time at Sailor Haven Beach. She says the water was so cold she didn’t feel anything, but there’s little doubt the creature that chomped on her leg was a shark. “It was a ten-inch orangey body and then there was a fin and then I got out, and my leg was bloody,” Lola said. “We went to the lifeguards, we ran up to them and they kind of bandaged it.” Lola was in waist-deep water roughly 10-feet off the shore when it happened. Her mother snapped photos and took to social media to share them. “I saw a lot of thrashing and her trying to get to me,” mom Barbara Pollina said. Lola wasn’t alone, with nearly identical bandaging slapped on the 13-year-old victim who had been boogie boarding just four and a half miles away. He didn’t just have bite marks on his leg; a shark tooth managed to embed into his skin. Both victims’ injuries were described as non-life-threatening The boy was taken to Southside Hospital. The girl was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. Marine life experts say cleaner ocean waters in New York are making conditions ripe for the sea life sharks like to eat, attracting them to areas closer to the shoreline. On Wednesday evening, Governor Andrew Cuomo deployed environmental conservation officers to investigate the waters off Fire Island. Lola says the ordeal won’t stop her from going in the water, but she’ll make sure to be more careful next time.
