Yankees Rally To Beat Royals, Splitting Doubleheader

NEW YORK (AP) — Greg Bird homered to begin a two-run rally in the eighth inning as the New York Yankees survived a rough outing by newly acquired reliever Zach Britton and a tumble by CC Sabathia, beating the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Saturday for a split of their day-night doubleheader. The Royals won the opener 10-5, tagging All-Star ace Luis Severino for six runs in 4 1/3 innings. The doubleheader was caused by a rainout Friday. Bird opened the eighth with a drive off Brian Flynn (2-2) that made it 4-all. The Yankees went on to load the bases and Aaron Hicks hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Aroldis Chapman, in his first appearance since throwing only three of 19 pitches for strikes last weekend against the Mets, worked around a leadoff single and a walk for his 27th save. He struck out Whit Merrifield to strand runners at the corners. Britton, traded from Baltimore to New York this week, had thrown a perfect inning Thursday in his Yankees debut. But after he retired the first two batters in the seventh, the Royals loaded the bases against the All-Star reliever on two hits and a walk. Britton then walked ninth-place batter Drew Butera on four bases, forcing home a run that put Kansas City ahead 4-3 and drawing boos from the crowd. Two innings earlier, Sabathia fell while fielding a soft grounder. The big lefty landed awkwardly trying to make the play on the first base side of the mound, his right knee hitting the grass and creating a large divot. Manager Aaron Boone and a trainer quickly came out to check on Sabathia, but he stayed in the game after throwing one warmup pitch. Pitching on 13 days’ rest — because of rainouts and the All-Star break — and for the first time since turning 38 last Saturday, he allowed two runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Dellin Betances (2-3) threw a scoreless eighth. Shane Robinson gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead with in the fourth when he homered into the left-field seats off rookie starter Heath Fillmyer. It was Robinson’s seventh career homer and first since June 4, 2016, while with St. Louis. Salvador Perez homered for the Royals, who traded cornerstone third baseman Mike Moustakas to Milwaukee for outfielder Brett Phillips and right-hander Jorge Lopez late Friday night. In his third career start, Fillmyer gave up three runs on five hits in five innings. Trying for his major league-leading 15th win, Severino instead was pulled after Lucas Duda’s two-run homer made it 6-0 in the fifth. Rosell Hererra hit an early two-run double, and Perez had a two-run single that set up Duda. Severino (14-4) allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out five in his shortest start of the year. The Royals extended a string of rough outings for the 24-year-old anchor of the Yankees rotation. Severino has given up 19 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings over his last four starts. The Yankees lost in their first game since slugger Aaron Judge sustained a fractured right wrist when he was hit by a pitch from Kansas City’s Jakob Junis on Thursday. Aided by three double plays, rookie Brad Keller (4-4) went 5 2/3 innings for the win one day after his 23rd birthday. TRAINER’S ROOM Royals: LHP Eric Skoglund made his second rehab start for Double-A Northwest Arkansas and allowed four runs in five innings while throwing 78 pitches. He has been on the 60-day DL since May 26 with an elbow sprain. Yankees: Bird was hit on the right knee in the first inning. Trainer Steve Donahue briefly checked on him, but Bird stayed in the game and flied out to the warning track in his next at-bat. UP NEXT Royals: RHP Burch Smith (1-1, 5.58 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season. He earned his first win since 2013 by allowing two runs on one hit in 6 1/3 innings Tuesday against Detroit. Yankees: LHP J.A. Happ (10-6, 4.18) will make his debut after being acquired from Toronto on Thursday. According to Stats, he is the fourth pitcher to make starts for the Toronto and New York in the same season. The last was current Yankees broadcaster David Cone in 1995. PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates needed someone to lean on with three of their better hitters out of the lineup Friday. On cue, David Freese came through in a big way. Freese drove in five runs, including an RBI single in the ninth inning that lifted the Pirates over the New York Mets 5-4. He homered in going 3 for 3 with two walks, helping the Pirates win for the 12th time in 14 games. “It’s wild,” Freese said. “We just have to step up. These are the dog days, I guess, and it’s tough out there. Bodies are dragging a little bit. But we are in the hunt, that’s what’s cool. They beat the Pirates 12-6 Thursday night behind Asdrubal Cabrera’s homer and two doubles – Cabrera was traded to Philadelphia on Friday. Josh Harrison led off the Pittsburgh ninth with an infield single against rookie reliever Tim Peterson (2-2). A single by Gregory Polanco put runners at the corner and Elias Diaz was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freese hit a drive over center fielder Brandon Nimmo for the win. Pittsburgh was without outfielders Starling Marte and Corey Dickerson, who were out with a left hand contusion and left hamstring discomfort, respectively. First baseman Josh Bell played two innings before leaving with left side discomfort. “We didn’t have a lot of depth, truthfully,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “That’s one thing these guys have done all year long, is that they show up. Whoever is available plays and they depend upon one another.” Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez (4-2) got the win after striking out two in a scoreless ninth. After Freese gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead with a two-out, two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded in the fifth, the Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Reliever Edgar Santana struck out Kevin Plawecki and had a chance to get out of the inning when Jose Reyes sharply lined out to left fielder Jordan Luplow. Michael Conforto paused after charging from third, but Luplow’s throw sailed to the backstop, allowing Conforto to continue and beat the tag at home, tying it at 4. Mets reliever Seth Lugo gave up the go-ahead single to Freese in the fifth, after replacing starter Jason Vargas. In his first start since June 19, Vargas allowed three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. “I thought (Vargas) did a good job,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “To push him any further than we did, I thought would be tough. He started getting a little tired there at the end.” Without getting the decision, Vargas was still pleased with his return. “It’s kind of hard to say what you anticipate, but I felt really solid out there,” Vargas said. “I felt like I was able to make some pitches. I made that one mistake to Freese that he really went out there and hammered, but I felt like I did a good job.” That one mistake led to Freese’s home run, which cut the Mets’ 3-0 lead to 3-2 in the second. Conforto gave New York that lead with a three-run homer in the first. Pirates starter Ivan Nova gave up three earned runs in five innings. ROSTER MOVES Mets: Cabrera was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for RHP Franklyn Kilome. New York signed OF Austin Jackson and designated OF Matt den Dekker for assignment. Pirates: RHP Alex McRae was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. RHP Michael Feliz was optioned to Indianapolis. TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: Hurdle did not provide an update on Bell, Marte or Dickerson. He did not say whether Marte or Dickerson could have pinch-hit if the game went to extra innings. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jose Abreu homered and drove in two runs, leading Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Shohei Ohtani hit a solo home run for the Angels, who squandered a 3-1 lead. Leury Garcia had a go-ahead sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in Chicago’s three-run sixth. Los Angeles starter Jaime Barria (5-7) and reliever Hansel Robles combined to walk three batters and hit another with a pitch during the inning, in addition to allowing an infield single. The White Sox had just two hits during the rally. Abreu hit a solo home run, his 14th of the season, in the first. It was just his second home run this month. The All-Star slugger also tied the game at 3 with a single in the sixth. Giolito (7-8) gave up three runs and four hits in six innings during his first career start against the Angels. The Southern California native struck out five and walked three, one intentional. Joakim Soria allowed a leadoff single to David Fletcher in the ninth and walked Mike Trout with two outs before throwing a called third strike past Justin Upton for his 15th save. Kole Calhoun had an RBI double for the Angels in the third and Trout added a sacrifice fly. Ohtani homered to center field in the fourth to give Los Angeles a 3-1 advantage. The two-way star from Japan has hit all eight of his long balls at home against right-handed pitchers. He is the first Angels rookie to hit his first eight homers at home. Garcia scored on Kevan Smith’s groundout in the fifth. Smith also was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth, forcing in a run. Barria hasn’t won since June 1. He left with a 3-2 lead but issued back-to-back walks in the sixth before being replaced by Robles. Barria was charged with four runs and four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out two. Giolito loaded the bases in the fifth but got out of trouble when Albert Pujols grounded into a fielder’s choice. TRAINER’S ROOM White Sox: OF Avisail Garcia (illness) was scratched from the lineup. He entered to play right field in the eighth. Angels: Pujols (left knee inflammation) was activated from the disabled list and started at first base. UP NEXT White Sox: LHP Carlos Rondon (2-3, 3.56 ERA) is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 13 strikeouts over his past two starts. He threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings last time out in a win against St. Louis. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kole Calhoun homered on his first pitch from All-Star closer Kenley Jansen in the 10th inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night after the Angels blew two leads in the Freeway Series. Four of the Angels’ five games against the Dodgers this season have been decided by one run. The Angels lead the season series 3-2. Angels manager Mike Scioscia equaled fellow catcher-turned-manager Ralph Houk for 18th on the career victories list with his 1,619th. Calhoun’s ninth homer went over the right-field wall with two outs against Jansen (0-3). The Angels led 3-0 in the second and 4-3 in the seventh before the Dodgers rallied twice to tie the game. The Dodgers put the potential tying run on in the bottom of the 10th when Andrew Toles doubled to deep left. Justin Upton collided with the wall trying to make the catch and the trainer came out to check on him, although he stayed in the game. Toles took third on a passed ball by but pinch-hitter Chase Utley flied out to center and Yasmani Grandal struck out swinging against Jose Alvarez (4-3) to end the game. The Dodgers tied it 4-all in the ninth. Grandal doubled to deep left off Blake Parker. Upton chased the ball to the wall, allowing Utley to score from first on a one-legged slide that narrowly beat the throw to the plate. The Dodgers went on to load the bases, but pinch-hitter Joc Pederson flied out to center to send the game to the 10th. Upton hit a go-ahead, two-out homer, his 19th, in the seventh to put the Angels back in front 4-3. He went 2 for 4 with two strikeouts and a walk, drove in two other runs and scored a run. Angels All-Star Mike Trout was limited to a single in four at-bats with a walk and a strikeout. The Dodgers had threatened in the eighth when they got the potential tying and go-ahead runs on. All-Star Matt Kemp singled leading off and took second on Parker’s wild pitch. After striking out Max Muncy, Parker walked Pederson and struck out Cody Bellinger. Toles flied out to left-center, although Upton and Trout nearly collided before Upton made the catch. Chris Taylor tied the game 3-all in the fifth with a leadoff homer, giving the Dodgers 127 home runs, which leads the National League. They are two shy of tying the team record for most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. The Dodgers trailed 3-2 in the second. Bellinger had an RBI single and Angels starter Andrew Heaney hit Taylor with the bases loaded. The Angels led 3-0 on Upton’s RBI single in the first and a pair of runs in the second. David Fletcher had a sacrifice fly and Upton drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk that scored Heaney, who reached on an infield single to first. Heaney gave up three runs — two earned — and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked one. Dodgers starter Alex Wood allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings of his team-high 19th start. The left-hander struck out six and walked two. After two messy innings, Wood settled down to retire 12 of his final 14 batters. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: 3B Justin Turner (strained right adductor) remains day-to-day although he was available to pinch-hit. NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Syndergaard pitched out of trouble in a rusty return from the disabled list and helped himself with an RBI single as the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Friday night. Amed Rosario tripled and doubled, both times over Bryce Harper’s head in center field, and the Mets won for only the sixth time in their last 26 home games. They have lost just three of 13 games at Citi Field since the start of last season. After missing seven weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger, Syndergaard (5-1) came out firing 99 mph fastballs. But he gave up seven hits in five innings and never retired the leadoff hitter. Still, the 2016 All-Star held the Nationals to one run while striking out three and walking two. Wilmer Difo made things easier by running into the first out of the third inning at third base, and Syndergaard retired Anthony Rendon and struck out Harper with two on to limit the damage. Difo had doubled to drive in Roark, who opened the inning with the first triple by a Washington pitcher since Joel Hanrahan in 2007. Syndergaard also got Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play with two runners aboard in the fifth. The right-hander was pulled after 75 pitches. Seth Lugo overcame a wild start to his relief outing and worked two hitless innings. Robert Gsellman gave up Adams’ upper-deck shot in the eighth but got six outs for his fourth save. Roark (3-12) became the first 12-game loser in the majors this season. He allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings. The right-hander has lost his last five starts and six decisions since his most recent win June 6 against Tampa Bay. Washington has dropped his past seven starts and nine of his last 10. Jose Bautista and Devin Mesoraco each had an RBI single in the first, sandwiched around Wilmer Flores’ sacrifice fly. Rosario tripled off the center-field wall to open the second and scored when a smiling Syndergaard lined a single to right field. TRAINER’S ROOM Nationals: SS Trea Turner was rested in favor of Difo as Washington started seven left-handed hitters against Syndergaard. Turner flied out as a pinch hitter leading off the ninth. … RHP Koda Glover is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Class A Potomac after his rehab assignment was moved up from the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. The reliever has been sidelined all season by right shoulder tendinitis and will probably require eight or nine appearances before he’s ready to come off the disabled list, manager Dave Martinez said. Mets: OF Yoenis Cespedes (right hip flexor) ran the bases at the team’s complex in Florida and was scheduled to do so again Friday, according to manager Mickey Callaway. “He came out of it really good. The 26-year-old Voth, a fifth-round draft pick in 2013 out of Washington, was 4-5 with a 3.55 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse. Wheeler, pitching in some poor luck, is 0-5 over 13 outings since his last win April 29 at San Diego. That’s the longest stretch without a win for a Mets starter since 1998.
