NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Staten Island homeowners were picking up the pieces Saturday after powerful storms passed through our area Friday afternoon. “We want our power back,” New Dorp resident Marie Riveccio told CBS2’s Dave Carlin. Electric company workers, city parks department crews and private contractors did a sweaty dance Saturday, ducking out of each other’s way for their grueling jobs on hard-hit Bancroft Avenue. “There are a lot of people that live without air conditioning,” said Riveccio. “But I can’t.” But losing your power wasn’t the worst that could happen – try having your bedroom ceiling vented with tree limbs poking in. George Menduina said he’s stuck, unable to get the tree off his home more than a day after it fell, despite making call after call. “You gotta get the tree off the house,” he said. “You gotta get a tree cutting company. Dilemma here now — I call them, they say, ‘well, we can’t cut the tree it belongs to the parks department.’” He was glad when the parks department arrived in the afternoon. But then, he got bad news. Parks department workers told Carlin that complicating the cleanup was that a crucial piece of equipment was not working properly. “That loader is not working right now. It has to reach in and grab it and pull it up and out,” one man said. “There’s another one, but there’s not this weekend.” The workers left, saying there may be no budging the tree for several more days. Menduina wasn’t the only resident complaining about getting the run-around. “The tree across the street fell right on top of it,” said Susie Sotomayor. Winds caused a tree to crush her husband’s motorcycle. She said she immediately called 311, then waited and waited. “I called again 311, I spoke to the operator there. She transferred me over to Con Edison, and they said that neither the police nor the fire department had notified Con Edison,” she said. Sotomayor said she’s learning the physical mess of the storm is only the half of it. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Powerful storms passed through our area Friday afternoon, causing road closures and power outages. A house on Rose Street in East Rutherford, New Jersey was struck by lightning around 3 p.m. No one was injured, but the 94-year-old homeowner was inside when he said the floors and walls suddenly felt like they were shaking. Bricks fell onto his driveway and the roof of his neighbor’s garage. “I’m happy everyone’s safe, no one’s injured. The house can be fixed, i’s just the chimney, no big deal,” said his son. The MTA said there is no Staten Island Railroad service in either direction between St. George and Tottenville, because of flooding. Shuttle buses are on their way to assist. New Jersey TRANSIT said it’s accepting bus tickets and passes system-wide due to weather-related conditions. As of 8 p.m., Con Edison was reporting more than 11,300 customers without power. JCP&L had more than 3,100 customers in the dark; Orange and Rockland had more than 2,000 customers out and PSE&G had more than 1,200 out. “The bulk of the outages are in Staten Island with more than 10,000 customers out due to storms moving through our service territory,” Con Ed said in a statement. Public Service Electric and Gas Company issued a warning to its customers with tips on dangers to be on the lookout for: Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything it might be in contact with. If a wire falls on or near your car, stay inside the car, call 911. To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run any gasoline-powered generators in a garage or any other enclosed space. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Twelve more buildings that were evacuated following last week’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District are expected to reopen Tuesday. It’s been five days since the explosion shook the area of Fifth Avenue and 21st Street , shutting down streets and forcing people out of their apartments and businesses. “We really have no indication how long it will be before we can fully return and actually live in our homes again,” said displaced resident David Bass. Thursday’s blast sent asbestos-filled steam into the air, which has been the overriding concern in the area. Officials said air samples have tested negative and about half of the roughly 45 affected buildings have now been given the all clear following testing. But officials say a dozen buildings have tested positive inside for asbestos contamination. “We are constantly testing the air outside,” said NYC OEM Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “Before we let people re-enter the building, we are testing the air inside in all common areas of the building.” There was a tense meeting Monday night as city and Con Edison officials answered a firestorm of questions from those impacted. About 400 businesses have been affected. “My people, they all want to come back to work and live life normal again,” said store manager Danielle Storno. “As a restaurant, people are not going to come if the whole area is blockaded and looks like a war zone,” said restaurant owner Renee Typaldos. Bus traffic was allowed on Fifth Avenue Monday, but it’s unclear when the area will be back to business as usual. Con Ed says it is giving $500 to everyone displaced and those who need to file claims for things such as hotels can do that. The city is also providing live updates as buildings are cleared for reoccupation through information on the city’s website

Even if you’re spared by the rains, you’re stuck with that breezy, tropical air out there. (Credit: CBS2) Some showers will be felt tonight, but the overall flooding risk will remain low. It will still be muggy out there, too, with temps only falling into the mid 70s. (Credit: CBS2) We’re in for another round of scattered showers and storms tomorrow with the focus more so inland. It will remain sticky and breezy with highs in the low 80s. (Credit: CBS2) Then Wednesday through Wednesday night we’ll see more widespread showers and thunderstorms. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Christian Ramirez scored twice, Darwin Quintero had a goal and two assists and Minnesota United won their third in a row with a 5-1 rout of Los Angeles FC on Sunday night. Ramirez and Quintero scored back-to-back goals to make it 3-1 at the end of the first half. Ramirez put away a loose ball in the 45th minute after Quintero’s corner was played out and then headed back into the area by Eric Miller. Quintero then made a run up the left channel behind a well-played ball from Miller and slotted the finish past the goalkeeper in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. Miguel Ibarra and Ramirez scored in the 56th and 58th minutes to make it 5-1. Rasmus Schuller opened the scoring with his first MLS goal for Minnesota (9-11-1) in the 25th minute, finishing Quintero’s pass from the middle of the area. Benny Feilhaber tied it for LAFC (10-5-5) a minute later with a blast from close range. Minnesota won four in a row at home for the first time in franchise history. Christian Ramirez Scores Twice, Minnesota Beats LAFC 5-1
RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) – An armed suspect is dead after a pursuit that began in Hemet and ended amid gunfire in a busy shopping area in Riverside Friday night. The incident began at about 7:30 p.m., when Hemet police went to the home of a man to investigate a report that shots had been fired in a field earlier in the week. While in the area, officers noticed the suspect’s Chrysler convertible in the area of Kirby Street and Devonshire Avenue. When officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, the car sped away, prompting a pursuit. The chase wound its way westbound on Devonshire and south onto California Avenue. While driving on California Avenue, police said, the suspect fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers. The pursuit then made its way into the city of Riverside, where Riverside police took over. “We believe that at least twice during the pursuit, out in either their city or the county, that the suspect fired shots at the pursuing officers,” Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback told reporters. No officers were injured. The pursuit came to an end in the area of California and Arlington avenues, which is near several stores, including a Sears and a Ross Dress for Less. Witness Marie Lua was driving in the area with her family when she their car got caught up in the midst of the chase. “We were driving down Arlington, and we just saw probably 15, 20 cop cars just pass us,” Lua said. Lua said she watched as gunfire erupted. “I had my 5-year-old child in the car, there was nothing I could do,” Lua said. “So we just stopped our vehicle and pretty much just watched everyone shoot at him, and I don’t know if he shot back.” The suspect was found dead in his car at the conclusion of the pursuit. His name was not released. It’s unclear if he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was killed by police. “It’s unsafe, and they could have went about it in kind of a safer way, before he actually hit traffic and they started shooting, while he was still in motion,” Lua said. The investigation into the case is ongoing.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Witnesses at the scene of a massive steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District say it was like a volcano erupting right underneath Fifth Avenue. “I heard a really loud boom and then a steam noise coming out,” evacuated resident Andrew Glasser told CBS2’s Janelle Burrell. “And we were told to evacuate our building.” Glasser was asleep when the high-pressure steam pipe exploded around 6:40 a.m. Thursday on Fifth Avenue near 21st Street. “I’m just in shock,” he said. Some witnesses said the electricity went off for a few seconds just before the giant plumes of white steam came billowing out of the ground. “Not only did the steam line burst, but it caused a disruption of a gas line, a water main and some electrical power,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. The pressure from the pipe, which was installed in 1932, also caused the pavement around it to crumble. “We saw a good amount of chunks of asphalt,” said witness Miro Bajlo. “There were massive plumes of steam coming out, rising up against the building,” said witness Mike Wynn. “I assured some old ladies, I said don’t walk near the manhole covers, there’s an explosion ’cause no one really knew,” said Bronx resident Patty Marsibilio. ConEd urging anyone who was in the area during the explosion to bag their clothes and to take a shower. Agis spoke to CBS2 by phone from inside the building while watching the steam rise hundreds of feet. “Like lava coming out of the earth, it was crazy,” he said. “The building is locked off. They’re not letting anybody in or out.” Asbetos testing found the potentially cancer-causing substance in the aging pipe but not in the air, which is safe to breathe. As a precaution, the FDNY has set up decontamination tents for crews and for anyone who have been in the area at the time of the explosion. Con Edison is urging anyone in the area at the time of the blast who may have been covered in any debris to bag their clothes and take a shower. Meanwhile, residents and employees in the area that is shut down are now waiting to hear when they’ll be able to return. “I just hope everything is OK,” said Glasser. Getting around the area means showing ID and dealing with barricades, CBS2’s Marc Liverman reported. “I think it’s a pain in the butt right now,” one woman said. “I was just walking up, I live just five blocks north, and I saw the smoke. I work two blocks south of this, so I can’t get anywhere,” said Sarah Anissipoeur. “I’m supposed to be in the building right now doing some maintenance, but I don’t really think I’m going to get down there,” William Aumick said. It’s a blow to area businesses, too. Some are dealing with no power and no customers. “It’s going to have a big impact. We’re really keeping an eye on the ground floor businesses in particular,” said Jennifer Brown, of the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership. “If many of them have to be closed for multiple days, that’s a huge loss of business impact. We have to work with the city. They have a really great emergency response unit out of the department of Small Business Services. So they’ll be going around and really assessing what the businesses need and what types of resources we can help out with.” Eight people suffered minor injuries in the blast.

‘It Was Crazy’: Witnesses Describe Scene Of Flatiron District Steam Pipe Explosion
CANOGA PARK (CBSLA) — Police are on the hunt for a man who has allegedly groped a series of female shoppers in the San Fernando Valley. Authorities have released video images of the subject hoping that they catch him before his crimes escalate. The LAPD says the suspect is brazen. He doesn’t attempt to cover his face. Officials say the wanted man approaches unsuspecting women and starts grinding his body up against them — sometimes from the back, sometimes from the front. He takes off on foot and usually flees the area in a car. Police are concerned the man’s behavior could get worse. “He does not attempt to hide his face,” says L.A County Sheriff’s Department Detective Arlene Padilla. “He is not attempting to hide his identity. His calmness concerns us. We do not want his behavior to escalate.” The groping incidents have taken place in a series of stores along De Soto Avenue and Erwin Street to Sherman Way — the area has a number of malls.

Peachtree City, GA (CBS Local)- Normally, deer tend to scurry away when humans approach. However, in one Georgia town, a group of deer have become aggressive, attacking multiple dogs and injuring one so badly that it had to be put down. According to CBS 46 in Atlanta, GA, deer in southeast Peachtree City have attacked at least a dozen dogs in the area. Caroline Lucsko, whose daughter Carolyn Taylor’s dog was attacked, described how the attack happened. “All of the sudden, the deer started chasing them, and my daughter took off, running really fast, and the deer just trampled on her little basset hound,” said Lucsko. Resident Hunter Wood, whose dog had to be euthanized after it was attacked when a doe jumped the fence into his backyard, told CBS 46 that he believes people are to blame for the deer’s lack of fear. “We’ve got such a heavy deer population in this area, which is partly contributed to the fact that the neighbors feed them,” said Wood. He believes that the deer are mistaking the dogs for coyotes, which is the reason for the aggressive behavior.
