Angels Trade Gold Glove Winning Catcher To Astros For Lefty Prospect, Cash

ANAHEIM (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels on Thursday traded slick-fielding catcher Martin Maldonado to the Houston Astros for lefty prospect Patrick Sandoval and $250,000 in international signing bonus pool money. Maldonado’s contributions behind the plate helped the Angels’ starters post a 3.77 ERA, which ranked fifth in the American League despite numerous injuries and significant inexperience in their rotation. A Gold Glove winner last season, Maldonado is also hitting .223 with 32 RBIs in 78 games. “Martin has been a huge part of what we know has been a terrific year on the mound,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “There’s no doubt that Martin had the respect of everybody, not only the coaching staff but the players, and contributed greatly to where we needed to be on the defensive side.” Maldonado, who is owed $1,362,903 from his $3.9 million salary, is eligible for free agency after the World Series. He understood that a trade was possible given the Angels trailed Houston by 15½ games in the AL and began the day 10½ games back of Seattle for the second wild-card berth. “I’m going to be a free agent. We haven’t played the way we want to play, and today is business. They got to do whatever is best for the team,” Maldonado said. Maldonado said he was initially caught by surprise when he was informed of the trade, but welcomed the opportunity to join the defending World Series champions. “Playing against those guys, it’s a team that they never give up,” Maldonado said. “They compete from the first pitch to the 27th out, so I’m looking forward to learn more as soon as I get there about those pitchers and those guys.” The Astros designated catcher Tim Federowicz for assignment. ANAHEIM (AP) — Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani all homered in the same game for the first time, and the Los Angeles Angels routed Chicago White Sox 11-3 on Wednesday night. Pujols passed Ken Griffey Jr. for sixth place on the career list with his 631st home run. Trout connected twice and drove in four runs. Ohtani added a two-run shot projected at 446 feet. Tyler Skaggs (8-6) tied a career high with nine strikeouts in six overpowering innings for Los Angeles. He whiffed his first five batters — the previous Angels pitcher to accomplish that was Jim Abbott at Oakland in September 1995. Trout had another grand day with his 13th career multihomer game. He hit a solo shot in the first inning and a three-run drive in the sixth to give him 28 homers this season. The two-time MVP went 3 for 4 and scored three runs. Pujols hit a solo homer to left field in the second, his 17th of the season. The 38-year-old slugger even swiped third in the fourth for his first stolen base this year. Skaggs retired the first 10 batters he faced, seven by strikeout. He allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits. James Shields (4-12) had another difficult outing for Chicago, giving up three home runs. He struck out six in the first two innings but also allowed two solo homers during that stretch. He permitted six runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings. Kole Calhoun doubled in the fifth for the go-ahead RBI as the Angels broke through with a four-run rally. They added five runs in the sixth. Ohtani batted second for the third time this season. The two-way rookie star from Japan hit his ninth home run. Matt Davidson had a solo homer in the ninth for the White Sox. TRAINER’S ROOM Angels: RHP Garrett Richards had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Carlos Rodon pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning, Yoan Moncada homered in the seventh and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Tuesday night. Rodon (3-3) took a no-hitter deep into the sixth and finished with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. He yielded three walks, but worked quickly and smoothly while the White Sox earned back-to-back victories for the second time in July. Nicky Delmonico added an RBI single in the eighth as the White Sox took the first two games of a four-game series between two major-market AL teams with zero playoff victories in this decade. Rodon retired 15 consecutive Angels between Mike Trout’s first-inning walk and David Fletcher’s two-out walk in the sixth. Andrelton Simmons singled to center to break up the no-hit bid but got caught rounding first base too far by alert third baseman Yolmer Sanchez after Fletcher slid in safely. The Angels chased Rodon and rallied in the eighth with Fletcher’s RBI double and Trout’s two-out, bases-loaded walk from reliever Juan Minaya. Jeanmar Gomez then got Justin Upton on a shallow flyout to end the rally. Felix Pena (1-1) pitched six innings of four-hit ball for the Angels (50-52), who fell two games below .500 for the first time all season. Los Angeles has lost four of five on its 10-game homestand. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jose Abreu homered and drove in two runs, leading Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Shohei Ohtani hit a solo home run for the Angels, who squandered a 3-1 lead. Leury Garcia had a go-ahead sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in Chicago’s three-run sixth. Los Angeles starter Jaime Barria (5-7) and reliever Hansel Robles combined to walk three batters and hit another with a pitch during the inning, in addition to allowing an infield single. The White Sox had just two hits during the rally. Abreu hit a solo home run, his 14th of the season, in the first. It was just his second home run this month. The All-Star slugger also tied the game at 3 with a single in the sixth. Giolito (7-8) gave up three runs and four hits in six innings during his first career start against the Angels. The Southern California native struck out five and walked three, one intentional. Joakim Soria allowed a leadoff single to David Fletcher in the ninth and walked Mike Trout with two outs before throwing a called third strike past Justin Upton for his 15th save. Kole Calhoun had an RBI double for the Angels in the third and Trout added a sacrifice fly. Ohtani homered to center field in the fourth to give Los Angeles a 3-1 advantage. The two-way star from Japan has hit all eight of his long balls at home against right-handed pitchers. He is the first Angels rookie to hit his first eight homers at home. Garcia scored on Kevan Smith’s groundout in the fifth. Smith also was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth, forcing in a run. Barria hasn’t won since June 1. He left with a 3-2 lead but issued back-to-back walks in the sixth before being replaced by Robles. Barria was charged with four runs and four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out two. Giolito loaded the bases in the fifth but got out of trouble when Albert Pujols grounded into a fielder’s choice. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels publicly praised Mike Trout “for prioritizing his personal values over commercial self-promotion” a day after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said the All-Star outfielder would be an even bigger star if he would spend more time marketing himself. The team released a statement Wednesday congratulating Trout on his performance in the All-Star Game in Washington then extolled the time he spends visiting hospitals, schools and charities and the quality time he spends with family. “We applaud him for prioritizing his personal values over commercial self-promotion,” the statement said. “That is rare in today’s society and stands out as much as his extraordinary talent.” A day earlier, Manfred said MLB was interested in having players more engaged and in helping players develop their individual brands. Manfred said Trout chooses not to spend his down time marketing. “Mike’s a great, great player and a really nice person, but he’s made certain decisions about what he wants to do and what he doesn’t want to do, and how he wants to spend his free time and how he doesn’t want to spend his free time,” Manfred said. “That’s up to him. If he wants to engage and be more active in that area, I think we could help him make his brand really, really big. But he has to make a decision that he’s prepared to engage in that area. It takes time and effort.” At 26, Trout is a two-time AL MVP and a seven-time All-Star. He homered off Mets ace Jacob deGrom on Tuesday night in an 8-6 win in 10 innings. Asked after the game about Manfred’s comments, Trout said: “I keep telling you guys, I do as much as I can. But it’s a long baseball season. I got to pick and choose when I want to do things and go from there.” Manfred’s remarks struck a sour note with fans, some of whom took to social media to say Trout was a great role model who should be left to live his life as he pleases. (AP) — Albert Pujols hit two home runs to tie Ken Griffey Jr. for sixth place on the career list with 630, and the Los Angeles Angels rolled to an 11-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Tyler Skaggs pitched six strong innings for the Angels in his return from the disabled list. Pujols hit a two-run shot in the first and a solo drive in the sixth. He also had three hits to pass ex-Angel Rod Carew and move into a tie for 25th all-time with Rickey Henderson at 3,055. It was the 50th multihomer game for Pujols, who went back-to-back with Justin Upton in the sixth. David Fletcher also homered in the first off Mariners starter James Paxton, who left the game with lower back stiffness after Pujols connected. Paxton (8-4) gave up three runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning, throwing just 17 pitches in his final start of the first half. Skaggs (7-5), who missed nine games with a hamstring strain, gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. The left-hander has allowed one earned or less in six consecutive outings, the longest such streak from an Angels starter since George Brunet in 1968. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Marco Gonzalez pitched seven sharp innings, David Freitas hit his first major league home run and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 on Wednesday night. Gonzalez (10-5), who retired his first 10 batters, gave up just two hits and struck out four without issuing a walk. He not only earned his seventh victory since May 17, he became the 10th pitcher in Mariners history to reach 10 wins before the All-Star break. Freitas, who had been hitless in seven at-bats since being recalled July 5, went deep in the third against starter Jaime Barria. It was Freitas’ 32nd career game, 26 of which have been with the Mariners. Barria (5-6) gave up three runs and five hits in five-plus innings with five strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander has lost his last five decisions, including the past two to the Mariners. The Mariners have won 11 of 15 games and 18 of their last 29. They also improved to 27-18 on the road. Seattle shortstop Jean Segura, who found out Wednesday he was added to the American League All-Star team as the result of online balloting, reached base twice. He doubled and was hit by a pitch on the left arm. The Angels did not have a baserunner until the fourth inning when Andrelton Simmons hit a comebacker off Gonzalez’s left leg for a single. Mike Trout followed with a single to center before Gonzalez retired his next 11 batters. Alex Colome pitched the eighth inning for the Mariners, and All-Star closer Edwin Diaz worked a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 36th save. After Freitas gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the third, Segura doubled leading off the fourth and Mitch Haniger was hit by a pitch. ANAHEIM (AP) — Kole Calhoun and Andrelton Simmons each had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Seattle Mariners 9-3 on Tuesday night. The Angels got 15 hits and overcame an injury to starting pitcher Garrett Richards, who left in the third inning with right forearm irritation. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday. Simmons, seeking his first All-Star appearance as one of five candidates in online balloting for the final AL roster spot, hit a go-ahead double in a four-run fourth. Calhoun and Albert Pujols both homered to lift a Los Angeles offense that needed a boost. The Angels have won three of their past four games. Seattle All-Star Mitch Haniger hit a three-run homer, his 18th of the season, in the first inning for a 3-0 lead against Richards, who allowed three consecutive hits to begin the game. ANAHEIM (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels used a two-out walk by Shohei Ohtani and a throwing error on Yasiel Puig to rally for a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night in the opening game of the Freeway Series. The Angels were down to their last strike in the ninth inning when Ohtani battled back from a 0-2 count all the way to a walk against Kenley Jansen (0-2). Ohtani then stole second and advanced to third on catcher Yasmani Grandal’s thowing error before David Fletcher hit a tying RBI single to left. Ian Kinsler followed with another base hit, and Fletcher scored on Puig’s game-ending error. Blake Parker (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. The 108 degree temperature set a record at first pitch for a game in Anaheim. The previous record was 106, which happened in 1988 and 2007. The Dodgers wasted a solid start by Kenta Maeda, who struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings. They had won four in a row. Matt Kemp hit run-scoring singles in the fourth and sixth to help the Dodgers jump in front, but the Angels rallied in the sixth. Kinsler and Jose Briceno opened the inning with singles. Kole Calhoun then struck out and Andrelton Simmons flied out before Mike Trout was walked intentionally, loading the bases. Maeda then was called for a balk, allowing Kinsler to score. Justin Upton walked to load the bases again, and Scott Alexander struck out Albert Pujols to end the inning. Maeda and Japanese countryman Ohtani faced each other for the first time in Major League Baseball. Ohtani was 0 for 2 with a strikeout and a groundout. Ohtani went 2 for 7 against Maeda when the two played professional baseball in Japan. Angels starter Felix Pena, a converted reliever, allowed two runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: LHP Tony Cingrani (left shoulder inflammation) threw a light bullpen of 20 to 25 pitches and then went to Arizona for more rehabilitation … RHP Walker Buehler (right rib micro fracture) threw a bullpen and will throw a five-inning simulated game Sunday morning. UP NEXT Dodgers: RHP Ross Stripling (6-2, 2.27 ERA) starts Saturday night. He allowed four earned runs in six innings in the Dodgers’ 6-4 win over Colorado on Sunday.
