Dodgers Topple The Braves, 5-1

ATLANTA (AP) — Yasiel Puig homered and drove in three runs following his return from the disabled list, Alex Wood pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to win his sixth straight decision and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the struggling Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Saturday night. Reinstated after missing 15 games with a right oblique strain, Puig made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second off Max Fried and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the sixth with his 12th homer , a towering shot off Luke Jackson that bounced off the third-level scoreboard facade in left field. Wood (7-5) allowed one hit and four walks with five strikeouts. His performance followed Rich Hill’s seven scoreless innings Thursday and Clayton Kershaw’s one run allowed in 7 2/3 innings Friday against an Atlanta offense that led the NL for most of the first half of the season. The Braves, second in the NL East, have lost four straight and 13 of 18 mostly because their bats have been quieted. They’ve averaged 2.2 runs over their last 13 defeats and have dropped to fifth in NL runs scored. Johan Camargo accounted for Atlanta’s offense with a homer off Caleb Ferguson in the seventh. Puig hit the Dodgers’ 143rd homer, tops in the NL for the West Division leaders. Wood stranded a runner in scoring position in the first and second as he improved to 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his last seven starts since he lost at home to the Braves on June 9. He didn’t get a chance to face Tyler Flowers with two runners on in the sixth. Flowers began the game with seven hits and eight RBIs in 11 career at-bats against Wood, so Dodgers manager Dave Roberts brought in J.T. Chargois. Flowers struck out. Los Angeles led 1-0 in the second when Enrique Hernandez singled and scored on Puig’s sacrifice fly. They went up 5-1 in the ninth on RBI singles by Chris Taylor and Manny Machado. Fried (1-4) allowed one run, two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. He was reinstated from the disabled list after missing 14 games with a left middle finger blister. TRAINER’S ROOM Braves manager Brian Snitker said 2B Ozzie Albies was held out of the lineup on a scheduled night off to rest his right hamstring. Injured last week at Washington, Albies missed four games. He returned Thursday and went 1-for-8 with four strikeouts over the next two games. He singled as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, and Snitker plans to have him back in the lineup Sunday. The 21-year-old Albies, an All-Star in his first full seasons in the majors, is one of two NL players with 20 homers and 10 stolen bases. TRANSACTIONS The Dodgers optioned OF Alex Verdugo to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Puig on the roster. … The Braves optioned OF Preston Tucker to Triple-A Gwinnett to make room for Fried. UP NEXT Dodgers: RHP Ross Stripling (8-2, 2.43 ERA) allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of his last start, a no-decision that the Dodgers won last Monday at Philadelphia. Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb (9-5, 3.41 ERA) gave up one run and four hits in six innings of his last start, a victory last Monday at Miami. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Sergio Romo relieved in the eighth inning, shifted to third base when Jonny Venters replaced him in the ninth, then struck out Brett Gardner to end the game with two on and give the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Scheduled Rays starter Nathan Eovaldi was traded to AL East-leading Boston about two hours before game time, and six pitchers combined on a seven-hitter. New York has lost just two series since May, and both are against the Rays. Tampa Bay swept three games in late June, took two of three this week and has won six of its last seven against the Yankees. New York, 14-14 over its last 28 games, acquired reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore late Tuesday but said he will not report until Thursday’s homestand opener against Kansas City. Neil Walker hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning, but the Rays took a 3-1 lead in the sixth when Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer off Luis Cessa (1-2) and C.J. CLEVELAND (AP) — Michael Brantley homered leading off the eighth inning, and the Cleveland Indians headed into the All-Star break with a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday to split their four-game series. One of six Cleveland players who will be in Washington for Tuesday’s All-Star Game, Brantley broke a 2-2 tie by belting a pitch from Chad Green (5-2) into the seats in right for his 12th homer. The Indians added two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Yan Gomes and Green’s wild pitch. The right-hander was available after pitching only five innings in Wednesday night’s 19-4 blowout of Cincinnati. Cody Allen struck out two in the ninth and got his 20th save in 21 opportunities, and Cleveland’s win ended with the Indians worrying about Edwin Encarnacion. Cleveland’s cleanup hitter homered in the fourth inning, but had to leave in the eighth after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. However, Indians manager Terry Francona said the slugger “is fine.” “It got the meat of the hand, fortunately,” Francona said. “That was a big sigh of relief.” Neil Walker homered for the Yankees, who enter the break 29 games over .500 and have the majors’ second-best record. However, the Yankees are trailing the scorching Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Aaron Judge struck out three times against All-Star Trevor Bauer, and Giancarlo Stanton fanned twice for New York. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kole Calhoun homered on his first pitch from All-Star closer Kenley Jansen in the 10th inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night after the Angels blew two leads in the Freeway Series. Four of the Angels’ five games against the Dodgers this season have been decided by one run. The Angels lead the season series 3-2. Angels manager Mike Scioscia equaled fellow catcher-turned-manager Ralph Houk for 18th on the career victories list with his 1,619th. Calhoun’s ninth homer went over the right-field wall with two outs against Jansen (0-3). The Angels led 3-0 in the second and 4-3 in the seventh before the Dodgers rallied twice to tie the game. The Dodgers put the potential tying run on in the bottom of the 10th when Andrew Toles doubled to deep left. Justin Upton collided with the wall trying to make the catch and the trainer came out to check on him, although he stayed in the game. Toles took third on a passed ball by but pinch-hitter Chase Utley flied out to center and Yasmani Grandal struck out swinging against Jose Alvarez (4-3) to end the game. The Dodgers tied it 4-all in the ninth. Grandal doubled to deep left off Blake Parker. Upton chased the ball to the wall, allowing Utley to score from first on a one-legged slide that narrowly beat the throw to the plate. The Dodgers went on to load the bases, but pinch-hitter Joc Pederson flied out to center to send the game to the 10th. Upton hit a go-ahead, two-out homer, his 19th, in the seventh to put the Angels back in front 4-3. He went 2 for 4 with two strikeouts and a walk, drove in two other runs and scored a run. Angels All-Star Mike Trout was limited to a single in four at-bats with a walk and a strikeout. The Dodgers had threatened in the eighth when they got the potential tying and go-ahead runs on. All-Star Matt Kemp singled leading off and took second on Parker’s wild pitch. After striking out Max Muncy, Parker walked Pederson and struck out Cody Bellinger. Toles flied out to left-center, although Upton and Trout nearly collided before Upton made the catch. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Albert Pujols hit two home runs to tie Ken Griffey Jr. for sixth place on the career list with 630, and the Los Angeles Angels rolled to an 11-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Tyler Skaggs pitched six strong innings for the Angels in his return from the disabled list. Pujols hit a two-run shot in the first and a solo drive in the sixth. He also had three hits to pass ex-Angel Rod Carew and move into a tie for 25th all-time with Rickey Henderson at 3,055. It was the 50th multihomer game for Pujols, who went back-to-back with Justin Upton in the sixth. David Fletcher also homered in the first off Mariners starter James Paxton, who left the game with lower back stiffness after Pujols connected. Paxton (8-4) gave up three runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning, throwing just 17 pitches in his final start of the first half. Skaggs (7-5), who missed nine games with a hamstring strain, gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. The left-hander has allowed one earned or less in six consecutive outings, the longest such streak from an Angels starter since George Brunet in 1968. Fletcher hit the first home run of his career and gave the Angels their third leadoff home run this season. Ian Kinsler had the other two. Enyel De Los Santos Wins MLB Debut As Phillies Beat Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Enyel De Los Santos won his major league debut and the Philadelphia Phillies got home runs from Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera in a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Franco drove in four runs as the Phillies, who began the day tied with Atlanta atop the NL East, won for the 10th time in 13 games. Nick Williams had three hits and two RBIs, and Rhys Hoskins also got three hits. De Los Santos allowed three runs and five hits over 6 1/3 effective innings. The 22-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he was 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts, and matched against another starter making his big league debut in Drew Gagnon of the Mets. Staked to an early lead and armed with an unorthodox and deceptive slingshot delivery that Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler dubbed a “crossfire,” De Los Santos (1-0) cruised for most of the night against a scuffling Mets lineup that has managed only eight runs over its last five games. De Los Santos walked three and struck out six. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes. Acquired from San Diego in December for shortstop Freddy Galvis, De Los Santos was scheduled to pitch for the International League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday before getting called up. He also was chosen to play for the World Team in Sunday’s All-Star Futures Game. It was the first time a Phillies starter made his debut against another starter in his first outing since Sept. 25, 1944, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Back then, Charlie Ripple faced Charlie Gassaway of the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. Amed Rosario had three hits for the Mets, including two triples to left field. New York has dropped 19 of its last 23 home games. Franco put the Phillies ahead with a three-run homer off Gagnon (0-1) in the second. The third baseman is batting .440 with two homers and seven RBIs over his last eight games. He added an RBI single in the sixth and made several nifty plays on hard-hit grounders. Williams lined a two-run single in the third. Herrera clubbed a solo shot into the Phillies’ bullpen in the fifth for his career-high 16th home run. BALTIMORE (AP) — Manny Machado hit two home runs, Jonathan Schoop singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles rallied past the New York Yankees 6-5 Tuesday night. Greg Bird homered and drove in four runs for the Yankees, who own an inexplicable 4-5 record against the last-place Orioles. Machado brought the Orioles back from deficits of 3-2 and 5-3 before Schoop won it in the ninth against Dellin Betances (1-3). A hit batter, a double by Adam Jones and an intentional walk to Machado loaded the bases with one out. After Mark Trumbo struck out, Schoop hit a bouncer that glanced off the glove of Bird at first base and into right field. Zach Britton (1-0) worked the ninth for Baltimore. Bird hit a three-run homer and added a sacrifice fly to help New York go up by two runs in the seventh. But the lead wouldn’t last. Machado had a solo shot in the fifth and a two-run homer in the seventh. Rumored to be traded before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, Machado has five multihomer games this season and 19 for his career. Orioles starter Andrew Cashner gave up five runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has gone eight straight starts without a victory. After retiring the first 13 Yankees in order, Cashner gave up a single, issued a walk and yielded a home run to Bird. Machado homered on the first pitch in the bottom half to tie it at 3. The pattern continued in the seventh. After Bird hit a sacrifice fly and Neil Walker singled in a run, Machado made it 5-all with an opposite-field drive to right off Chad Green. Coming off the disabled list after being sidelined for a month with two sore hamstrings, Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings. He was pulled, as planned, after throwing 80 pitches. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: 2B Gleyber Torres (hip) will begin to ramp up baseball activities this week, manager Aaron Boone said. The hope is that Torres returns soon after the All-Star break. … C Gary Sanchez (groin) participated in batting practice. Boone says the club will map out a rehab stint of at least one game with a timeline for a return similar to that of Torres. Orioles: OF Jace Peterson sat out the game after bruising his knee in a collision with the wall on Monday night. … RHP Chris Tillman (back) allowed four earned runs over 6 1/3 innings for Class A Frederick. He will likely get one more rehab start before the Orioles decide if they want him back in the majors, where he’s 1-5 with a 10.46 ERA this season.
