New Mobile COVID Vaccine Unit Comes To Southeast LA Friday

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A new COVID-19 mobile vaccine unit will launch Friday in Southeast Los Angeles as part of an effort to vaccinate the hardest-hit areas of L.A. County. The launch was being announced by L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis at a food distribution event in South Gate. County,” Solis said in a news release. It’s unclear exactly how many doses the mobile unit will be capable of administering on a daily basis. On Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state will begin setting aside 40% of all vaccine doses for the state’s most vulnerable communities. “You can’t safely reopen your economy until you get this disease behind us,” Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday. “We can’t honestly do that until we address those communities that are disproportionately vulnerable.” RELATED: Garcetti Announces New COVID-19 Mobile Vaccine Initiative To Target Hard-Hit Communities Of Color In LA This comes as L.A. County reported 2,253 new coronavirus cases Thursday, the highest one-day total since Feb. 20. Also Thursday, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that a new L.A. city-run vaccination site will open next week at the University of Southern California. L.A. County as a whole has been struggling to obtain enough COVID-19 doses to meet demand. On May 1, the county expanded vaccine eligibility to include teachers, food and agriculture workers, first responders and law enforcement personnel. Nearly 10 million doses have now been administered across California.

Election 2020: New York Leads Potentially Record Setting Wave Of Republican Women Elected To Congress

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York is on the leading edge of a wave that is likely to sweep a record number of republican woman into Congress. It’s an effort dating back two years, after the opposite result in the 2018 midterms, CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported Thursday. Republican Nicole Malliotakis declared victory in a brutal congressional race on Staten Island and in South Brooklyn. Malliotakis will likely join what could be a record 33 republican woman in the next House of Representatives. New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik helped convince Malliotakis to run. “The story of the 2020 congressional elections is, this is the year of the republican women. We have had smashing success,” Stefanik said. MORE: Election 2020: Malliotakis Declares Victory Over Rose In Contentious Race For 11th Congressional District Stefanik led the charge, creating the Elevate Political Action Committee to recruit and elect GOP woman to Congress after the 2018 midterms left just 13 of them in the House. Their 2020 success, especially in swing districts, is undeniable. Central New York Republican Claudia Tenney lost two years ago, but appears to have won back her seat on Tuesday. A republican woman also defeated former Clinton cabinet secretary Donna Shalala in Florida. Stefanik said doubling the number of women in the Republican caucus is important. “Women are particularly effective communicators… We bring different perspectives as moms, as the people making the majority of their family’s healthcare decisions,” Stefanik said. More Election 2020 Coverage : General Election Results New York Results New Jersey Results Complete Coverage Daniel McCarthy, a political scientist at Manhattanville College, said the GOP focus on electing women was the smart and obvious move. “College educated women in suburbs were turning away from the republicans and becoming democrats… But, if given a choice of a woman running on the republican line, many of those women stayed with the party,” said McCarthy. Stefanik said this can’t be “one and done,” and the effort to diversify the GOP caucus will continue. Even with the GOP’s gains in 2020, there are likely to be more than 80 democratic women in the next Congress. All-Stars Slug Record 10 Homers With AL Beating NL, 8-6 In Extra Innings

WASHINGTON (AP) — A record 10 home runs. A slew of strikeouts. The all-or-nothing All-Star Game mirrored what baseball has become. Astros teammates Alex Bregman and George Springer homered on consecutive pitches to begin the 10th inning, and the American League beat the National League 8-6 Tuesday night for its sixth straight win. Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Jean Segura also connected for the AL in a game where every run except one scored on a homer. Scooter Gennett hit a tying two-run shot off Seattle closer Edwin Diaz in the bottom of the ninth. Joey Votto, Willson Contreras, Trevor Story, Christian Yelich also went deep for the NL. There had never been more than six homers in an All-Star Game since Babe Ruth hit the very first one in 1933. Not that everything went the sluggers’ way. Starters Max Scherzer and Chris Sale and the relievers combined to fan 15 in the first 4 1/2 innings, and there were 24 strikeouts overall. Fitting, because this season is on pace to become the first with more strikeouts than hits, a year after a record number of home runs. Orioles shortstop Manny Machado had fun, pulling out a camera to snap a selfie at second base after Matt Kemp doubled. By Wednesday, they could be teammates — Baltimore seems ready to trade Machado, with the Dodgers and Phillies in the mix. Major League Baseball, meanwhile, seemed to take a selfie of itself at this game, with all the homers and strikeouts. This was MLB 2.018, an update that’s not appealing to everyone. Declining attendance is a concern, and the sport’s owners worry that slower games with less action on the bases are taking a toll. A day after hometown star Bryce Harper electrified the crowd by winning the Home Run Derby, it was eerily quiet for most of the evening at Nationals Park. Harper didn’t excite the fans, either, fanning in his two at-bats. The popular Presidents Race at the park drew the biggest cheer in the middle innings, with the big-headed George Washington character prevailing. The only thing missing was a bevy of defensive shifts. Overloaded infields are the norm now, but AL manager A.J. Hinch of Houston and NL skipper Dave Roberts of the Dodgers pretty much played things straight up. Bregman and Springer homered off losing pitcher Ross Stripling of the Dodgers — that’s kind of how last year ended, too, with Houston battering Los Angeles pitchers in the World Series. “I’ve seen it before. I haven’t seen it before in an All-Star Game like this,” Hinch said. “Pretty proud of them.” Bregman smiled all around the bases and earned MVP honors. Segura’s three-run homer in the eighth landed in the bullpen and broke a 2-all tie. The Seattle infielder popped up the previous pitch, but Votto, Cincinnati’s reliable first baseman, dropped it for an error as he approached the dugout railing. Segura then connected off Milwaukee’s Josh Hader, one of baseball’s most dominant relievers. Judge homered in the second off Scherzer, the Nationals ace who became the first reigning Cy Young Award winner to start an All-Star Game in his home park. There was another judge at the park besides the Yankees slugger — Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. Trout kept up his All-Star excellence, tagging Mets righty Jacob deGrom. A two-time MVP in his event, Trout is 7 for 15 with five extra-base hits and three walks in these games. Diaz wound up with the win and Toronto’s J.A. Happ got a save after giving up Votto’s homer. The AL won for the 18th time in 21 games played to a decision, and leads the series 44-43-2.
