Study Claims Higher Temperatures, Climate Change Linked To Suicide

STANFORD, Calif. (CBS Local) – A new study from Stanford University is claiming that suicide rates will continue to rise as the Earth gets hotter. Researchers at the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences at Stanford believe there is a link between warmer temperatures in the U.S. and Mexico and more suicides being reported in recent years. “Suicide is one of the leading causes of death globally, and suicide rates in the U.S. have risen dramatically over the last 15 years,” Stanford’s Marshall Burke said in a press release . Burke’s team cites the trend for higher suicide rates during warmer months as evidence of their conclusion. The findings, published in Nature Climate Change , estimat that there could be an additional 21,000 suicides in the U.S. and Mexico by 2050 due to the hotter climate. “We’ve been studying the effects of warming on conflict and violence for years, finding that people fight more when it’s hot. Now we see that in addition to hurting others, some individuals hurt themselves,” study co-author Solomon Hsiang explained. “It appears that heat profoundly affects the human mind and how we decide to inflict harm.” Scientists held back from saying that climate change was the direct cause of mental health issues and suicide, but added that the higher temperatures increase the risk for harmful behavior. A recent report by the CDC revealed that suicides in the U.S. have risen by 30 percent over the last 20 years.

Study Links ADHD To Teens And Their Digital Media Use

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBS Local) – A study of teens using high-tech devices has found a link between constant use of digital media and ADHD. According to scientists at USC, teens who are “heavy users” of digital devices like smartphones were twice as likely to show symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder than adolescents who only use the gadgets occasionally. “New, mobile technologies can provide fast, high-intensity stimulation accessible all day, which has increased digital media exposure far beyond what’s been studied before,” Adam Leventhal, professor of preventive medicine and psychology at USC said in a press release . Researchers examined nearly 2,600 public school students in Los Angeles County from 2014 to 2016 and tracked how often they used “14 popular digital media platforms.” The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , discovered that 9.5 percent of the students who used half of the tested platforms had developed ADHD. Over 10 percent of the teens that reported using all of the platforms were found to have ADHD symptoms. Less than 500 students reported being infrequent users of digital media. Among those teens, only 4.6 percent of the students had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. “We can say with confidence that teens who were exposed to higher levels of digital media were significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future,” Leventhal added. The USC team said they focused the two-year study on 15 and 16-year-olds because adolescence was a common point for the onset of ADHD and was also the point where children normally get “unfettered access to digital media.”

Study: Child Behavioral Issues Linked To Parents With Childhood Trauma

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBS Local) – A new study has found a link between the stressful childhoods some parents endured and the behavioral issues their own children develop. Dr. Adam Schickedanz of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA says adults who suffered severe stress or trauma during their childhood are more likely to produce children who are diagnosed with behavioral and mental health illnesses. “This is the first research to show that the long-term behavioral health harms of childhood adversity extend across generations from parent to child,” Dr. Schickedanz said in a university release . The study, published in the journal Pediatrics , examined thousands of children and their parents who were all part of the 2014 Child Development Supplement (CDS) and 2014 Childhood Retrospective Circumstances Study (CRCS). The results found that parents who reported having four or more adverse childhood experiences (ACE) had double the risk of having children with ADHD . Those parents were also four times more likely to have a child who suffers from mental health problems. An ACE was described by the scientists as any kind of abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction that may have occurred before the age of 18. “Higher ACE scores help us to predict behavioral health problems in childhood and adulthood, worsening mental health, adverse health-related behaviors, chronic disease burden, and premature mortality,” UCLA researchers wrote. “If we can identify these children who are at a higher risk, we can connect them to services that might reduce their risk or prevent behavioral health problems,” Schickedanz added.
