Williams Outduels DeGrom, Pirates Blank Mets

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trevor Williams outdueled Jacob deGrom, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-0 win over the New York Mets on Saturday. Williams (9-7) allowed five hits in six innings with five strikeouts and three walks. He hasn’t allowed a run in 17 straight innings since he surrendered three in the third inning of a 17-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. Pittsburgh’s first run came after deGrom (5-6) began the sixth inning with two strikeouts. Gregory Polanco singled down the right-field line before stealing second. Colin Moran singled to right, scoring Polanco. David Freese, who had five RBIs in a 5-4 win Friday, pinch-hit in the seventh, grounding out but scoring Jordan Luplow from third. Adam Frazier followed with a double to right, driving in Jordy Mercer from second to make it 3-0. Moran drove in Polanco again with a single up the middle in the eighth, extending it to 4-0. Polanco was 3 for 4 with two doubles; Moran was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Francisco Cervelli made it 5-0 later in the eighth with a single that scored Luplow. Williams got out of trouble in consecutive innings, first when he got Devin Mesoraco to ground into a double play with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. An inning later, he struck out Brandon Nimmo and forced Wilmer Flores to pop up to third, stranding runners on first and second. deGrom lost for the fourth time since June 28, when he last won a start. He allowed three runs on eight hits, his most surrendered this season, with five strikeouts in seven innings. ROSTER MOVES Mets: INF Luis Guillorme was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. The 23-year-old rookie has a .172 batting average with four RBIs in 29 games with New York this season. Pirates: OF Austin Meadows and INF/OF Jose Osuna were recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. Osuna, who hit .196 with two home runs and seven RBIs in his first 23 games with Pittsburgh this season, played first base Saturday. TRAINER’S ROOM Pirates: 1B Josh Bell was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. He left Pittsburgh’s game Friday after playing the first two innings. … OF Starling Marte returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games with a left hand contusion. He hit second and played centerfield. … OF Corey Dickerson was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to July 25 with left hamstring discomfort. UP NEXT Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (4-6, 4.33) will have the chance to carry momentum from his past two starts into Sunday against the Pirates. He won each while allowing a combined six runs on 12 hits in 14 2/3 innings pitched. Pirates: RHP Joe Musgrove (4-4, 3.90) will look to have another strong start when he faces the Mets on Sunday. CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie right-hander Shane Bieber pitched into the eighth inning and Cleveland’s shaky bullpen narrowly closed things out, lifting the Indians over the New York Yankees 6-5 on Friday night. Bieber (5-1) was removed after Tyler Wade’s leadoff double in the eighth and Cleveland leading 6-3. Brett Gardner’s RBI groundout cut the lead to two and set up a tense ninth inning. Greg Bird followed with a single, but Allen got Miguel Andujar to bounce into a double play. Allen walked Neil Walker, but pinch-hitter Didi Gregorius popped up to shortstop Francisco Lindor in shallow left field. Allen recorded his 19th save in 20 chances. Jose Ramirez, the starting third baseman for the AL in the All-Star Game, drove in two runs with a groundout in the first and a triple in the fifth. Michael Brantley, also an All-Star, hit a two-run double in the second. The Indians broke a seven-game losing streak against the Yankees dating to last season’s AL Division Series when New York came back from a 2-0 deficit. The Yankees won the first four games between the teams this season. Yankees rookie Domingo German (2-5) allowed six runs — matching a season high — in four-plus innings. Bieber allowed four runs — three earned — in seven-plus innings. The right-hander was making his seventh major league start. Neil Ramirez replaced Perez in the eighth and hit Aaron Judge with a 1-2 pitch, but struck out Aaron Hicks. Judge ran on the pitch and was called safe at second, but the call was overturned after a review. Bieber has a 3.74 ERA in seven starts with Cleveland after beginning the season at Double-A Akron. Ramirez’s groundout scored a run in the first and Cleveland added three in the second. Yan Gomes doubled in a run before Brantley added a two-run double. New York got back in the game in the fifth on Walker’s RBI double and Gardner’s sacrifice fly, with a wild pitch scoring another run. Ramirez’s RBI triple and Yonder Alonso’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to 6-3. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: C Gary Sanchez (strained right groin) ran the bases Friday and could begin a minor league rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Scranton. He’s been out since June 25. Indians: LHP Andrew Miller (right knee inflammation) will throw to hitters Saturday at Double-A Akron and will likely begin a rehab assignment next week. He’s been on the disabled list since May 26. Dodgers’ Chase Utley To Announce Retirement: Report

(CBS SPORTS/CBSLA) – Chase Utley is in the midst of his 16th season at the big-league level. It will be his last. Currently in his third full season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Utley will reportedly announce this afternoon his intent to retire at the end of the year. Though Utley has not been an effective player this season (he entered Friday with a 77 OPS+), he was without a doubt one of the best second baseman of his era — and could well find himself in Cooperstown down the road. Utley made six All-Star teams, won four Silver Slugger Awards, and earned MVP votes in five consecutive season. He’s a career .276/.358/.466 hitter who, from 2005-13, hit .290/.378/.503 with 202 home runs and 123 stolen bases. Here’s a look at where he ranks among second basemen since he debuted in 2003: Hits: fourth Doubles: second Home runs: second Runs batted in: second Stolen bases: sixth Batting average: 26th On-base percentage: eighth Slugging percentage: third Wins Above Replacement: second Robinson Cano is the one second baseman with more WAR than Utley since 2003. Meanwhile, Ian Kinsler is the only other second baseman within 10 wins of Utley. (Dustin Pedroia is 13 wins back, and Ben Zobrist is 21 wins behind.) Utley’s advanced metrics stack up well historically, too. His 65.6 career WAR includes 49.3 coming during his peak. The average Hall of Fame second baseman, for reference, notched 69.5 career WAR with 44.5 coming during their peak. Add in how he was a pivotal part of some great Philadelphia Phillies teams, including the 2008 World Series champions, and he could get the nod from those who prefer their Hall of Famers to have enjoyed team success in addition to individual accolades. Of course any discussion of Utley’s career is not complete without mentioning his takeout slide on Ruben Tejada during the 2015 postseason. The league subsequently changed the rules concerning how baserunners were allowed to slide. Tejada, for his part, never recovered to play as he did before the incident. Utley was expected to hold a news conference at 3:15 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Rays Rout Mets As Nathan Eovaldi Flirts With Perfect Game

NEW YORK (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi took a perfect game into the seventh inning, C.J. Cron hit an early three-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays routed the New York Mets 9-0 on Sunday. Eovaldi retired his first 18 batters before Brandon Nimmo lined a clean single to right field leading off the seventh. Nimmo was quickly erased on a double play, and Eovaldi faced the minimum through seven innings. The right-hander, who returned this season from his second Tommy John surgery, struck out nine and helped himself with an RBI single. Andrew Kittredge pitched the final two innings for the Rays, giving up a single in the ninth before finishing the two-hitter. Joey Wendle and Jake Bauers also homered for Tampa Bay. It was the second time this season Eovaldi (3-3) made it through six innings without allowing a hit. He threw six hitless innings in May against Oakland for a 6-0 Rays win in his first major league start since 2016. Three times this year Eovaldi has gone six or more innings and given up no more than one hit, tied with Pittsburgh’s Trevor Williams for most in the majors. Cron’s home run gave the Rays a 3-0 lead in the first. He connected on a fastball down the middle from Chris Flexen (0-2) and drove it into the second deck in left field. The homer was Cron’s 17th of the season, setting a career high. Flexen, making his first big league start since last September, struggled with command early. He only lasted three innings on a day when the Mets needed length from their starter ahead of a doubleheader Monday. He gave up five earned runs in three innings, walking three and hitting a batter with a pitch. Eovaldi knocked in a run in the fifth when he beat out an infield single to make it 6-0. A day after putting the leadoff hitter on in seven of nine innings, the listless Mets were shut out for the second consecutive game. They’ve been blanked eight times this season and have gone 14 straight series without winning one. TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: RHP Chaz Roe was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left meniscus tear. He will have a procedure Friday and is expected to miss at least four to six weeks. RHP Jaime Schultz was recalled from Triple-A. … Gold Glove CF Kevin Kiermaier did not start due to back tightness. … SS Willy Adames sat out for the second consecutive day due to illness. … 2B Daniel Robertson was hit by a pitch on the inside of his right elbow in the first but stayed in the game. … OF Mallex Smith left with leg cramps after running the bases in the fifth. UP NEXT Rays: RHP Chris Archer (3-4, 4.24 ERA) pitches the series opener Monday night at home against Detroit. It will be Archer’s first start since June 2 when he was placed on the DL for the first time in his career with a left abdominal strain. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said Archer will be limited to “loosely” 70 pitches. Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (2-6, 4.36 ERA) starts the opener against the Phillies, and RHP Corey Oswalt (0-1, 7.94) goes in the nightcap as the teams make up an April 2 postponement.
