By Bree Guy & Mark McIntyre, CBS2 Meteorologists/Weather Producers That was a drencher out there today! Most areas have or will experience quite a bit of rain today. Rain totals are looking to hit over an inch along the Jersey Shore and close to a half inch in the city and Long Island. North of the city will stay between a tenth and quarter inch. The front will move through rather quickly and the rain will clear up by later this afternoon. (credit: CBS2) There is a flash flood watch in affect until 4 p.m. for parts of the area. There is also a Flash Flood Warning that will be in affect for parts of New Jersey until around noon. Be careful out there! It will be a bit cooler than it was yesterday following the rain. However, temperatures will steadily rise to the mid 80s today. (credit: CBS2) The good news is that the rain is sweeping away the humidity and it will feel much better than it has lately. The humidity will stay low throughout the weekend so it’s going to look and feel great! Skies will start to clear after the rain passes and will remain this way over the next couple of days. This will bring plenty of sunshine for the weekend! Enjoy!
Ryan Mayer Sometimes, you need a reminder of the goodness of humanity. Today, that reminder comes from Indianapolis where a good Samaritan returned Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s lost wallet to the team’s practice facility. To show his gratitude, Luck sent the man an autographed football with a thank you note earlier this week. Haileigh Hoffman, a producer at RTV6 in Indianapolis, posted a photo of the ball and note on her Twitter account. My friend’s dad found Andrew Luck’s wallet while he was on a bike ride. He returned it to the practice facility and a few weeks later he got this in the mail! Such a nice gesture. @Colts @NFL @JimIrsay #Colts pic.twitter.com/1UVfXt9ZQS — Haleigh Hoffman (@HaleighHoffman) July 6, 2018 In the note Luck wrote: “Many thanks! You made my life much easier, ha! Thanks for reminding me of the ‘kindness of strangers’”. Luck is working his way back from the shoulder injury that has sidelined him for most of the last two seasons. The team is limiting his workload as the season approaches in order to attempt to slowly work Luck back into shape for the full-time QB role.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – With the 4th of July falling on on a Wednesday this year, bargain hunters have had extra time to chase down those deals. “Retailers aren’t doing much in terms of their sales bells and whistles around July 4th,” says shopping expert Trae Bodge of Slickdeals . But don’t worry – there are sales to be had, reports CBS2’s Alex Denis. Macy’s is offering 20 percent discounts and there are deals at Home Depot, Sears, Overstock and Saks Fifth Avenue. And look for discounts in specific categories, like active wear, where shoes and apparel are expected to be discounted 40 to 55 percent. With school out for the summer, gaming deals are popular this month. “A lot of the sales are for members – members of Best Buy, Xbox, PlayStation,” Bodge says. “They’re giving away some free bundles, discounted bundles. Some really good deals to be had there.” And now is the time to stock up on back to school clothes, which should be discounted anywhere from 20 percent off to full-on clearance. “What I’m seeing are really strong apparel deals from those solid kids apparel places like Forever 21, Gymboree, Old Navy,” Bodge says. “But I would hold off on your gear like your backpacks, lunch boxes.” Those items will be marked down in August, with one exception. “My friends at Staples gave me a little heads up, there’s a really good deal at the end of the month — the last two weeks,” Bodge says. “25 percent off of backpacks, with the purchase of select school supplies.” If you’re an Amazon Prime member, take advantage of Prime Day. The exact date is usually a secret but Bodge has the inside scoop. “We think Amazon Prime Day will be around mid-month, around the 16th of July. But you didn’t hear that from me.” What should you buy then? “What we’ve seen on past prime days are sales on their proprietary devices like their Kindles, Echo Dot,” she says. If you’ve got your eye on something specific, set a deal alert on slickdeals.net so you’ll be alerted when the item you want is on sale. And finally, this may be the best deal of all: Best Friends Animal Society says all adoptable pets are free through the 4th of July. Their goal is to send home 10,000 pets in 10 days.

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS Local) – A pair of new studies on infant health have found that many babies in the U.S. are being given solid food too early and one type of snack may be delaying their development. Researchers from the CDC have found that between 20 and 40 percent of U.S. parents are giving their children solid food before they are four months old. Health officials recommend parents should hold off on switching to food for at least six months. “Introducing babies to complementary foods too early can cause them to miss out on important nutrients that come from breast milk and infant formula,” lead investigator Chloe M. Barrera said in a press release . The CDC studied the diets of 1,482 U.S. children between the ages of six and 36 months. The agency found that 38 percent of babies were switching from formula to food in their fifth month and only 13 percent of parents waited until the child’s seventh month. Once an infant reaches the point where they’re eating food, researchers are cautioning parents to beware of one particular snack: food pouches. The easily accessible, puréed fruits and vegetables found inside the squeeze packs have become a busy parent’s dream. “Parents are feeling reassured that their kids are getting the fruits and vegetables because they’re having the pouches that have all these vegetables mixed in,” Dr. Natalie Muth in The New York Times . Pediatricians say this easy meal is actually creating some potentially harmful habits. The overuse of pouches is reportedly hurting a young child’s development when it comes to learning how to chew and swallow solid food, use spoons and forks and improve their speech. “If you’re just given four to five pouches a day to just suck out of there, you may not be developing the other feeding skills that you need to,” speech-language pathologist Kara Larson told The Times . Experts added that the pouches also contribute to overeating as well. “Kids are probably getting these things a lot when they’re not actually hungry,” Dr. Muth added. The doctor claims a parent who uses pouches as a reward “sets up snacking as being a habit that happens frequently throughout the day or for reasons other than hunger.”

Following Diver’s Death, Time Running Out To Rescue Trapped Boys, Thai Official Says
MAE SAI, Thailand (CBS News) – Thai authorities overseeing the rescue operation for 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a flooded cave in the country’s north said they have a “limited amount of time” to get them out, as they raced Friday against worsening weather and lowered oxygen levels in the underground complex. Thai rescue personnel are seen at the Tham Luang cave area as operations continue for the 12 boys and their coach trapped at the cave in Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in Chiang Rai on July 6, 2018. (Getty Images) The massive operation inside and around Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province suffered its first fatality Friday when a former Thai navy SEAL passed out underwater on an overnight mission and was unable to be revived. “We can no longer wait for all conditions (to be ready) because circumstances are pressuring us,” Thai SEAL commander Arpakorn Yookongkaew told a news conference. “We originally thought the boys can stay safe inside the cave for quite some time but circumstances have changed. We have limited amount of time.” The oxygen levels inside the cave were getting lower because of all the workers inside, and authorities on Friday were trying to install a 3-mile-long oxygen tube to pump in air, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports. A senior army commander, Maj. Gen. Chalongchai Chaiyakam, said that the most pressing mission was to provide the oxygen line to reach the kids, who are stuck deep in the complex but are being looked after by four SEALs, including a medic. He said the oxygen line was also tied to a telephone line that would provide a channel of communication for the team. The boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach went exploring in the cave after a soccer game June 23. Monsoon flooding cut off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for almost 10 days as the only way to reach them was by navigating a series of dark and tight passageways filled with muddy water and strong currents. Authorities have been racing to pump out water from the cave before more storms hit the region in the coming days and send water levels rising again. Due to high water levels, the only way for the boys to get out of the cave would be by diving, something cave rescue experts warn is extremely dangerous, even for those with experience. Authorities were trying to drain the flood waters to a level where the boys would not have to dive and could swim out with their heads above water, Tracy reports, but there were worries that even if the water levels were lowered, the boys would not have the endurance to make the trip. Friday’s death of the former SEAL underscores the risks of diving. The diver was working in a volunteer capacity and died during an overnight mission in which he was placing oxygen canisters along the route divers must take to get to the children. The strategically placed canisters would allow divers to stay under water for longer during the approximately five hour trip to reach the stranded team. While underwater, the rescuer passed out and efforts to resuscitate him failed. The governor has said the 13 boys may not be extracted at the same time, depending on their condition. The boys were reportedly weak but for the most part physically healthy. They had been practicing wearing diving masks and breathing, in preparation for the possibility of diving. Cave rescue experts have said it could be safest to simply supply the boys where they are and wait for the flooding to subside. That could take months, however, given that Thailand’s rainy season typically lasts through October. And without proper oxygen levels, staying put could also prove deadly. Meanwhile on Friday, FIFA, the organizers of the World Cup, sent a letter to the president of the Football Association of Thailand offering their “deepest sympathies and support” to the families of young soccer players and their coach. The letter, signed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, invited the team to the World Cup final in Russia, should they be rescued in time and be healthy enough to travel. It said that the team’s appearance at the final would “undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration.” The boys have asked the navy SEALs taking care of them in the cave for details about what has happened in the World Cup since they got trapped on June 23. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. Ryan Mayer Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have squared off plenty of times with a major on the line throughout the pairs career, but now they two are reportedly planning a possible match with higher stakes: $10 million. According to a report from Golf.com , Woods and Mickelson nearly had the match set up to take place on July 3rd in Las Vegas. The details weren’t able to be worked out in time, however, Mickelson told the website that the two sides are still working on making the match happen. “We’re working on a different date,” Mickelson said on Thursday. “I thought it was done for the 3rd but obviously it wasn’t.” Woods’s representatives declined to comment. The idea for the match reportedly was spawned during the practice round that the pair played prior to the Masters at Augusta this past April. Mickelson then hinted at a potential match ahead of The Player’s Championship in May telling reporters at the time: “The excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match. Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.” According to the report, Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas is the likely site and the match wouldn’t necessarily be a one-time thing. The pair have a “shared vision” to play a few exhibition matches a year, around the world.
