LOS ANGELES (CBSNewYork/AP) — Nancy Sinatra Sr., the childhood sweetheart of Frank Sinatra who became the first of his four wives and the mother of his three children, has died. She was 101. Her daughter, Nancy Sinatra Jr., tweeted that her mother died Friday and a posting on her web page said she died at 6:02 p.m. but didn’t indicate where she died. “She was a blessing and the light of my life,” her daughter said. Attempts to reach representatives for Sinatra Jr. late Friday were unsuccessful. Nancy and Frank Sinatra had been dating as teenagers and married at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Feb. 4, 1939, just as Frank’s singing career was about to take off. Three years before marrying the former Nancy Barbato, he had landed a 15-minute radio show on local station WAAT. During the marriage’s early years, the Sinatras lived in a modest apartment in Jersey City, where their two eldest children were born. For a time she was employed as a secretary while her husband worked as a singing waiter. After Sinatra became a pop-music sensation in the 1940s, the couple moved to Los Angeles, where the singer would also become a movie star, raconteur, man about town and notorious womanizer. Nancy Sinatra left Frank after his affair with actress Ava Gardner became public knowledge. Weeks after the pair’s divorce became final in 1951, Sinatra’s ex-husband married Gardner, while Sinatra went on to raise the couple’s three children: Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina. After the gossip over the divorce and Gardner marriage died down, Nancy Sinatra devoted herself to family and numerous celebrity friends, largely withdrawing from the spotlight. She not only outlived her husband, who died in 1998, but her son, who died in 2016. She is credited, under the name Nancy Barbato, on the Internet Movie Database with just two TV and film appearances, in her daughter Nancy’s 1975 concert film, “Nancy and Lee in Las Vegas,” and in 1974 on her friend Dinah Shore’s talk show. In later years she would become known as Nancy Sr., especially after daughter Nancy became a 1960s singing star in her own right with “These Boots Are Made For Walking” and other hit songs. She also remained friendly with her ex-husband, the latter being said to have put in requests over the years for pasta and other Italian food dishes she was known to be an expert at preparing. She never remarried. “There is no bitterness, only great respect and affection between Sinatra and his first wife,” Gay Talese wrote in 1966, “and he has long been welcome in her home and has even been known to wander in at odd hours, stoke the fire, lie on the sofa, and fall asleep.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A horse racing track in northern New Jersey has brought legal sports betting to New York City’s doorstep. The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford started taking sports bets at 11 a.m. Saturday. The track is located in the sports complex where the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets play, about six miles (10 kilometers) from New York City. The daily fantasy sports provider FanDuel is running the space, and says bettors are now able to wager on the World Cup final, men’s and women’s tennis, and Major League Baseball games. Later this year, gamblers will be able to place bets on everything from first downs to wins and losses in all major American sports. “The things that we will be bringing will be like being able to bet in the middle of a game, so that as the score changes the odds change,” FanDuel Chief Operating Officer and President Kip Levin says. It becomes the fourth sports betting outlet in New Jersey, following the state’s U.S. Supreme Court victory in a case that cleared the way for all 50 states to legalize sports betting. Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport, near the Jersey shore, and the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City had already offered it. Those three outlets took in $16.4 million in sports bets in the first two weeks it was legal. Some of the money raised was bet on events which haven’t even happened yet, like the World Series. In taxes alone, New Jersey has raised almost $294,000. “There was no legislation done in New York, so everybody in New York has to come, if they want to make a legal sports bet, here to the Meadowlands or Monmouth or Atlantic City,” Monmouth Racetrack CEO Jason Settlemoir said. Legislators predicted sports betting would raise 20 to 40 million dollars in tax revenue per year. While they haven’t made that money so far, they expect football season to bring them closer to that target. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s the last straw, of sorts, for Starbucks. The java giant and MGM resorts have joined the growing list of companies eliminating plastic straws. Dozens of cities across the country have already established bans or restrictions on the use of plastic straws in restaurants and earlier this year, a bill was introduced to ban them and drink stirrers at restaurants and bars around the five boroughs. Environmentalists say the straws endanger aquatic wildlife. The director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s “ Give a Sip ” campaign, John Calvelli, stopped by to tell us more.

PICO-UNION (CBSLA) – At least 25 people were injured when a tour bus overturned on the 10 Freeway in the downtown Los Angeles area of Pico-Union early Saturday morning. (CBS2) The collision occurred just before 4 a.m. on the westbound 10 Freeway at the junction with the 110 Freeway. According to California Highway Patrol, a bus carrying 32 passengers and the driver struck a median that separates the two freeway entrances and turned over. Twenty-five people were rushed to hospital, the Los Angeles Fire Department reports. Four were in serious condition, five were in fair condition and the other 16 were in good condition. Another seven people refused to be hospitalized. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. A Sig Alert was issued and the westbound 10 Freeway was shut down at the junction for more than five hours. Caltrans had a hazmat crew on scene to clean up about 100 gallons of diesel fuel which spilled onto the freeway. The westbound lanes were fully reopened at around 9:45 a.m. The bus may have been coming from the Pala Casino in northern San Diego County, a CHP official told CBS2, but that was not confirmed.
