DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A 30-year-old woman with an addiction to painkillers has been accused of killing her toddler son with a lethal mix of drugs in her breast milk. Samantha Whitney Jones was charged Friday with criminal homicide in the April 2 death of her 11-month-old baby. More From CBS Philly An autopsy found the baby died from a combination of methadone, amphetamine and methamphetamine, the Bucks County District Attorney’s office said in a statement. According to an affidavit, Jones told police she’d been too tired to make the baby a bottle when he awoke crying at 3 a.m. and instead breastfed him. Samantha Whitney Jones. (credit: Bucks County District Attorney’s Office) A few hours later, the baby was pale and had bloody mucus coming from his nose, she told police. Jones’s mother began CPR at the instruction of a dispatcher after they called 911, the affidavit said. Police arrived at the home in New Britain, about 35 miles north of Philadelphia, to find the baby in cardiac arrest. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he died. The affidavit stated that Jones said she primarily had been breastfeeding the baby, but switched to formula a few days before the baby’s death, saying the infant wasn’t getting enough milk. Jones told police that she had been prescribed methadone because of an addiction to painkillers, that she had taken it during her pregnancy, and that she was taking it at the time of the baby’s death, the affidavit said. A message seeking comment from her lawyer, Louis Busico, wasn’t returned Monday. Other parents have faced charges over drug-laced breast milk in recent years. In 2016, two former Arizona TV news reporters were sentenced to a year of probation and suspended 30-day jail terms after cocaine was found in their baby’s system. And in 2012, a California woman whose infant son died after ingesting methamphetamine-laced breast milk was sentenced to six years in prison. Jones is being held on $3 million cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 23, according to CBS Philly . (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

Pennsylvania Mom Accused Of Killing Infant Son With Drug-Laced Breast Milk
By Steve Silverman You have heard this before, and multiple times. If the New York Jets can develop their young quarterback, the team has a chance to surprise in the AFC East. Sam Darnold was selected with the third pick in the NFL Draft in April, and while the Jets are not putting a lot of public pressure on him to jump into the fight and become the starting quarterback early in his rookie season, that’s just what they would like to happen. Barring that, Josh McCown, or possibly newcomer Teddy Bridgewater, will have the inside track on starting the season under center. While both of those alternatives are fairly decent, the ideal scenario involves their rookie quarterback from USC with the big arm and high talent level. The first thing the Jets need to see is that he’s not Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith or Christian Hackenberg. All Jets fans know that the team has a succession of busts at quarterback and that can’t continue. The team’s loyal fans have seen too much misery over the years. If Darnold can play well enough this summer and is in a position to wrestle the job away from McCown by Week Four or Five, he should find some decent targets. Jermaine Kearse makes the most out of his ability and he’s very difficult for opposing cornerbacks to cover one-on-one. Quincy Enunwa missed all of last season after suffering a preseason neck injury. If he can return to the starting lineup and stay there, Enunwa will prove to be a huge target. He caught 58-857-4 in 2016, and he can use those numbers as a jumping off point for 2018. Terrelle Pryor at the other receiving spot is another threat, and if he could ever play to his size-speed ratio – he’s 6-4, 228 pounds and runs a 4.4. 40 – the Jets would have a real contributor. One thing the Jets need to have this year is a solid running game. That’s important for McCown or Bridgewater, and it is even more vital when Darnold comes on the scene. The diversity that a strong ground attack will bring is invaluable for a young quarterback. While the Jets appear to have several capable backs in ex-Brown Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, Eljah McGuire and Thomas Rawls, they don’t have a superstar – or even a star – at the position. It’s hard to make an offense go that doesn’t have a bread-and-butter back, especially when the team is waiting for its young quarterback to grow into his skin. The offensive line was a problem a year ago in giving up 47 sacks, and while the signing of former Redskin center Spencer Long is a positive development, there’s no reason to think there will be a complete turnaround. Making sure the offensive line is professional and competent on an every-week basis has to be one of offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates’ top priorities. If the Jets can retool in all of these areas, they could have a better-than-decent offense. However, when you have that many question marks, it’s tough to think that passing grades will be on the report card at the end of the day. Head coach Todd Bowles is under no illusions when it comes to defensive play. Former star Muhammad Wilkerson is lining for the Packers, and the Jets are counting on rookie third-rounder Nathan Shepherd to make the step up from Fort Hays State to playing regularly in the NFL. The team brought in Avery Williamson from the Titans to anchor the linebacking crew. The rest of the linebackers are largely unproven, but if Williams plays at a high level, his mates should be able to follow his lead and step up. The secondary looks quite a bit better than it has in previous years, as Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye are big hitters at strong safety and free safety, respectively. Maye has the kind of instincts and intelligence needed for his position, while Adams is capable of putting his imprint on any game. But the key will come down to the combination of Bowles and Darnold. The coach-quarterback situation does not exactly sound like Bill Walsh-Joe Montana, but then again, it doesn’t have to. Bowles is not a quarterback whisperer, but he needs to set the tone with his young signal caller right away. He has to make his expectations clear and he cannot baby his rookie signal caller. The tough approach should work best, and Bowles should be capable of looking at his young signal caller in the eye and letting him know exactly what must be done. If he can’t, the Jets will be looking for another head coach fairly quickly.

Development Of Darnold, Improvement Of Both Lines Keys To Jets’ Season
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge on Monday ordered a temporary halt to any deportations of reunited families who were separated by the Trump administration after crossing the southwest border. The American Civil Liberties Union had asked Judge Dana Sabraw to delay deportations a week after reunification. The ACLU said in a court filing that its request is a response to “persistent and increasing rumors … that mass deportations may be carried out imminently and immediately upon reunification.” The ACLU said parents need a week after being reunified with their children to decide whether to pursue asylum. The decision “cannot be made until parents not only have had time to fully discuss the ramifications with their children, but also to hear from the child’s advocate or counsel, who can explain to the parent the likelihood of the child ultimately prevailing in his or her own asylum case if left behind in the U.S. (as well as where the child is likely to end up living),” the ACLU says. Sabraw said he would temporarily halt deportations until the Justice Department could file a response to the ACLU’s documents. He gave the government attorneys one week, and said he’d formally rule after that. Justice attorneys opposed halting the deportations. The request by the ACLU followed a flurry of weekend activity in the case. The judge said late Friday that he was having second thoughts about whether the government was acting in good faith. He was responding to an administration plan to reunite more than 2,500 children ages 5 and older by July 26. The administration’s reunification plan uses “truncated” procedures to verify parentage and perform background checks, excluding DNA testing and other steps it took to reunify children under 5. The administration said the abbreviated vetting puts children at significant safety risk but is needed to meet the deadline. During a hastily scheduled hearing after the plan was released Friday, Sabraw said the government was presenting a “parade of horribles” that misrepresented his orders. He insisted that the deadline be met. “The task is laborious, but can be accomplished in the time and manner prescribed,” he wrote in a subsequent order. Sabraw has scheduled four hearings over the next two weeks, including one Monday, to ensure compliance with his order. Evelyn Stauffer, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department, said Saturday that the administration proposed its plan “in the interests of transparency and cooperation” after concluding that the abbreviated vetting was necessary to make the deadline. “Within the time the court allows, we will strive to implement the most comprehensive procedures possible to ensure child welfare,” she said. “We look forward to continuing our close work with the court to accomplish the goals we share of safe, expeditious reunification.” (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — New Jersey gambling regulators are warning casinos to submit their plans for sports betting by Monday or risk not being approved in time for the start of football season. David Rebuck, director of the state Division of Gaming Enforcement, told The Associated Press on Sunday he has directed the Atlantic City casinos to get their sports betting applications in by the end of the day on Monday. The division first notified the casinos of that timetable on July 9. The warning also includes plans for internet and mobile sports betting, which no casino in New Jersey has yet been approved to offer. Casinos that miss the deadline run the risk of not having their sports betting operations tested and approved in time for the start of football season in early September. “They’ve got to give us a reasonable amount of time to evaluate and test all this,” Rebuck said. He said gambling operators have been aware since January that the gaming enforcement division would test and approve individual applications as they came in, and not all at once like it did with the start of internet gambling in 2013. Rebuck said some casinos had not submitted their sports betting platforms for testing as of a week ago, while others are further along in the process. The NFL season begins on Sept. 5 with a Thursday night game between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. That is followed by a full slate of Sunday games on Sept. 9. So far, four companies are offering sports betting in New Jersey: the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City, and Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport and the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, which began taking bets Saturday. The two casinos and Monmouth Park took in $16.4 million in sports bets during the first two weeks it was legal in New Jersey in June. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. Rush On For Casinos To Start Sports Bets Before Football
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Online shoppers are primed for big savings as Amazon prepares to launch its fourth annual Prime Day Monday at 3 p.m. ET, promising even more discounts this year. And that’s ratcheting up the pressure on other stores and chains like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Walmart and Target to also roll out big promotions. At 36 hours, this year’s Amazon Prime Day is longer and more ambitious than ever. Prime members will have access to more than one million deals, including discounts on Amazon’s Alexa-enabled products, like the Echo, Fire TV and Fire Tablet. And for the first time, there are Prime Day deals at Amazon’s subsidiary, Whole Foods. “They have a lot of Amazon products in Whole Foods stores now,” said Dan Ackerman, a section editor for CNET. “They’ve got the Amazon Echos and the Dots and the little Amazon tablets in there. The discounted prices on those make them almost casual pickups on the way to the checkout counter.” The online deals apply to big ticket items, including washing machines and dishwashers, as well as smaller household goods like paper towels. Amazon started Prime Day to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2015. It was such a success that now the other e-commerce giants are scrambling to keep up. Ackerman says the entire retail industry is feeling the pressure. “They certainly feel like they have to compete because the first year they had a lot of counter sales. They backed off for a while but this year, they’re all back – Best Buy, Targets stores.” Amazon predicts shoppers will spend $3.4 billion worldwide during the 36-hour period, making it feel like Black Friday in July. Prime Day is also a way for Amazon to keep its subscribers on board. Amazon increased the annual Prime membership by 20 percent to $119 in May 2018.

By Bree Guy CBS2 Weather Intern Temps are getting up there! We are expecting to just scrape 90 today. (Credit: CBS2) Along with the high temperatures, there will be high humidity. Light and loose clothing is recommended. (Credit: CBS2) There will be a heat advisory in the city that branches out to western and northern areas. Also, what has become the normal for this month, an air quality alert will be in affect for northern areas so take precautions if you have sensitive respiratory issues. There may be a pop up shower this afternoon but it looks like most of it avoids the area and moves out pretty quickly. If it doesn’t come during the afternoon, there is also a chance it may roll through later tonight but it’s still the same fast moving story. (Credit: CBS2) Tomorrow is when the brunt of the rain will occur so make sure to bring the umbrella. Overall, the rest of the week is looking amazing with mid-80 degree temperatures and the humidity even starts to come down later in the week.
