FREEHOLD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — It can be a real challenge to find a parking spot at a mall on a busy weekend, but now a mall in New Jersey is offering some prime spots at a price. To avoid the trouble of driving up and down to find a parking spot, the Freehold Raceway Mall says it’ll save you one if you aren’t afraid to pay up. On Saturday and Sunday morning, a parking attendant will place signs in the lanes that block off a total of 60 spots that are right in front of the mall’s front door. The mall will charge $5 to park in one of the premium spots tucked between Macy’s and Nordstrom. They say there are around 6,000 other spots at he mall property where guests can always park free of charge. “We’re not asking everyone to park and pay for parking,” the mall’s Senior Marketing Manager Debra Panzarella said. “That’s not the whole idea. The whole idea is to give those that want that convenience the opportunity to utilize it.” The mall has offered pay-to-park services before. During the holidays, they charge $15 to valet and say the service is heavily used. While the weekend parking plan just started last week, the mall says it’s been embraced by tenants despite competition with online retailers to make sales. To help shoppers embrace the program, some retailers in the mall offer coupons that pay for an upfront spot. The mall management company says they’ve implemented parking for purchase at other properties, including the Danbury Fair Mall in Connecticut. Handicap spots are exempt from the payment program.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Traffic in New York City can be maddening for anyone sitting behind the wheel, but now a company has come up with a plan to make things better for those trying to get around: Just let the vehicle drive itself. The future of urban transportation could be in small driverless, self-driving vehicles like small shuttle buses ordered up from an app, reports CBS2’s Scott Rapoport. The shift is the brainchild of Coast Autonomous , a company which came up with the concept and held a demonstration Tuesday in Times Square. “Driverless vehicles, once they get fully deployed, are gonna be a lower coast because you don’t have the expense of a driver,” said Rick Baker, head of urban development for Coast Autonomous. The company says its vehicles are perfect for short distance shuttle trips at airports, college campuses, theme parks and low speed, highly congested areas in New York City. The vehicles are slow moving – only going up to 20 miles an hour – and hold up to 12 people at a time. “We see during peak hours this could run on a fixed route and on off-peak hours, you call it from an app and it goes point-to-point as an on demand service,” said Adrian Sussman, managing director of Coast Autonomous. The company claims it could reduce cars on the street and ease gridlock, but the city’s Department of Transportation says it has not had any official contact with Coast Autonomous. Without a driver, the vehicle is equipped with sensors which the company says uses radar to detect the presence of pedestrians in crosswalks and traffic around it. “When it sees an obstruction on the road it sends a signal for the vehicle to stop,” said Baker. The company insists its vehicles are safe though clearly in the concept stage. After testing them in seven countries, they hope to bring the vehicles to the U.S. next year.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — One person has died of Legionnaires’ disease in a cluster of 18 cases in a pair of upper Manhattan neighborhoods, city health officials confirmed on Tuesday. The city Health Department said that seven people remain hospitalized due to the outbreak localized in the lower Washington Heights and Hamilton Heights areas. Health officials say they have inspected 20 cooling towers and ordered several building owners to increase their use of biocides to kill the bacteria associated with the disease. Legionnaires’ is a form of pneumonia contracted by breathing in water droplets contaminated with the bacterium Legionella. Most cases can be traced to plumbing systems where conditions are favorable for Legionella growth. The disease is not passed from person to person. The city sees an average of 200 to 500 Legionnaires’ cases each year. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — If you’ve found yourself sweating in this summer’s heat, you may have hydrated with a store-bought sports drink. They replace electrolytes, but they’re not cheap and contain a lot of calories. Sweat is nearly all water, so that’s what’s most important to replace. Plain water works just fine, but there are some electrolytes in sweat that only sports drinks will restore. As it turns out, making your own is easy, and can be cheaper and even healthier than using store-bought. Brands like Gatorade or Powerade contain plenty of electrolytes, but they also contain additives, preservatives, and worst of all, sugar. What we worry about with those sports drinks is the caloric intake that comes,” dietitian Jennifer Hartman said. “What you have is it’s loaded with sugar.” Plain salt is most of what you lose in sweat, so it’s all you need in the homemade concoction. Other electrolytes are easily replaced with food. Green, leafy vegetables will do the trick, as will bananas or even dark chocolate. The rest is all flavoring. Lemon or lime juice works, and a bit of ginger could add a touch of spice. Pomegranate juice adds a bit of color and a dose of antioxidants. From there you can control what kind and how much sweetener to add. “If you truly don’t want the sugar and you want it to be sugar free, you could add some stevia, the little droplets, or the splenda sugar free sweetener,” Hartman said. Water is usually enough for most people other than extreme athletes like marathoners, but there’s no harm in consuming drinks containing electrolytes other than cost and calories. If you want to make your own brew, we’ve got an easy starter recipe HERE .

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Officials in Garden City are expected to unveil big plans Tuesday night, that could change how a historic Long Island building looks and runs. St. Paul’s School in Garden City has large, gaping holes in the roof and on the ground. Barricades surround the nearly 140-year-old vacant building and there’s no question it needs major work, but this community is torn over what should be done. “If they can keep the outside and just do the inside, I would be all for that,” said Garden City resident Lisa Fedor. “Keeping the facade doesn’t keep the integrity and the history of the building,” said Garden City resident Megan Colon. The village bought the four-story building and the 48 acre plot, back in 1992, right after the school was shut down. While athletic programs use the fields for games, the recreation department and a nursery school utilize some of the smaller buildings. Nevertheless, the building’s monstrous focal point has practically been untouched for more than two decades. “It’s now become a problem for the town I believe, because its just like a white elephant, sitting there,” said Garden City resident Barry Smith. “We need to get moving, the building is falling down,” said Garden City Mayor Brian Daughney. Daughney says he believes designers came up with the perfect concept for the space. He can’t show the plans just yet, but tells CBS2 the proposal would house a hockey rink and a soccer field inside, while renting out other parts of the building. “We want to make it top notch, sort of like what you would see on a university campus,” the mayor said. “We will figure out the financing, obviously, we will figure that out before we put a shovel in the ground and that is all going to be in the works.” Many residents tell us they’re all for reconstructing the old school as long as it’s charm stays. “I would love to see the character remain, it’s a historic building,” said Garden City resident Chris Emmel. Even if that means raising tax dollars to pay for it. “Absolutely, whatever the cost,” said Garden City resident Billy Walsh. If all goes according to plan, construction on the Garden City building could start this spring. The mayor wants to continue to urge residents that this is just a concept and he wants to hear from you about it. A community forum was scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Garden City Casino. Officials say another is scheduled at the same location on July 26th, and others will be scheduled in the near future.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Sports betting, already a huge success in New Jersey , may have a future in New York before this fall even though state legislators failed to put into action anything since the U.S. Supreme Court made such gambling legal earlier this year. It was a major piece of unfinished business in Albany, reports CBS2’s Tony Aiello. Lawmakers left for the year without voting on a sports betting bill that also would have authorized mobile wagering. “We have to go to Jersey now,” said Jim O’Mara of Yonkers. “Go down the shore, Monmouth, whatever, and do the betting. They missed the boat, Jersey’s gonna open the Meadowlands, and Monmouth.” It turns out a 2013 bill already allows sports betting at the four Vegas-style casinos that have opened in New York, including Resorts World Catskills. “There’s no question it will drive revenue and visitation to our casino here,” said Charlie Degliomini of Resorts World Catskills. Degliomini says the casino was pre-wired to allow sports betting in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s May decision legalizing it. Potential future sports betting locations in New York. (credit: CBS2) As soon as the state gaming commission issues regulatons, the Catskills casino is ready to take sports bets like Monmouth Park in New Jersey. “I think we’re more excited than anxious, but we know it’s something that’s going to happen, it’s just a question of when,” said Degliomini. “For us, sooner is better than later.” Next year, the legislature would be expected to expand sports betting to the slots-only casinos – Empire City here in Yonkers, Jake’s 58 in Suffolk County and Resorts World in Queens. That would be the jackpot for state revenue, but the ante comes this September when the New York State Gaming Commission is expected to issue regulations allowing New York’s first four sports books to open.
