BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA) — Residents of a rapidly gentrifying enclave of Los Angeles tried to shut down the grand opening of a new coffee shop, saying the owner’s support of President Donald Trump’s stance on immigrants is reason alone to want him out of the neighborhood. On Thursday, protesters held signs and screamed at patrons in front of Asher Caffe & Lounge located at 945 S. Boyle Ave. in Boyle Heights, a traditionally Jewish neighborhood that is now predominately Latino. They say they oppose the cafe and the owner over his support of Trump’s immigration policies. “So what’s the connection? This is what I don’t understand. I’m confused — the connection between Donald Trump and good coffee,” Israeli-born businessman Asher Shalom told CBS2 News. The kosher cafe was set to have a grand opening on July 12, the day anti-gentrification activists were met by Los Angeles Police officers blocking the entrance. According to Eater LA , about 30 protesters associated with the group Defend Boyle Heights (DBH) showed up to speak up against Shalom, who they called “an anti-immigrant trump loving gentryfier” in a Facebook post. “They really intensely protested and accosted all the visitors that came to our grand opening event,” said son David. “It was very scary,” said Shalom’s daughter Yael. “There was a lot of people protesting outside wearing masks […] and they threw a significant amount of feces at our windows.” DBH was accused of using similarly aggressive tactics against another coffeeshop in the area last year and against an art gallery nearby that eventually shuttered. DBH showed a screenshot of a retweet of one of Trump’s messages about his proposed Muslim ban by Asher Fabrics Concept, one of Shalom’s other companies. Shalom told CBS2 he came to the United States 30 years ago and is now a U.S. citizen. Shalom showed CBS2 two proclamations honoring him from L.A. City Councilman Jose Huizar and County Supervisor Hilda Solis, both who represent Boyle Heights. Shalom said his businesses employ dozens of people, including immigrants. The Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce, which had invited Shalom to join and was slated to attend the grand opening, terminated his membership days before the confrontation. In a letter from chamber president Jennifer Lahoda, she mentions a photo shared by Shalom on his Facebook page reading, “I wish Democrats would fight as hard for Americans, as they do for illegals.” Lahoda said the views expressed “are not in line with the values and objectives of the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce.” “Boyle Heights thrives because of our diverse immigrant population — The Chamber will always celebrate and support this fact. We will not support anyone who chooses to conduct themselves in a hateful manner, especially toward members of our community.” Shalom denies he is anti-immigrant or hateful, telling CBS2, “My name is ‘Shalom,’ and I love peace.” Despite the controversy, Asher Caffe was busy Wednesday with people who support Shalom and his right to his political opinions. “I don’t think politics should get in the way of good food,” said one woman. “I support him, in that I will come and give him my business,” another patron said. Neither DBH nor the chamber of commerce wished to give their remarks on camera.

CALABASAS (CBSLA) — A $30,000 reward was offered Wednesday for information leading to the suspect who killed a young father who was camping with his two daughters at Malibu Creek State Park. Tristan Beaudette, 35, of Irvine was killed last month. Detectives said they have no leads, no suspect and no motive. Beaudette was shot in the head while he was in a tent with his children. City and county leaders are hoping the offer of the reward money will help break the case. There is no known connection between the murder and as many as nine other shooting incidents at the park over the past two years. “It’s really bizarre, really bizarre. Scary,” said nearby resident Jon Lake. Lake and many of his neighbors say they are concerned that a killer is still on the loose. “My wife is probably the most relaxed person I know,” Lake said, “and she’s really nervous about this.” Lake believes all the shootings have some connection. “I definitely think it’s connected. It just seems too unreasonable for them not to be,” Lake says. Witnesses claimed to have have heard more shots this past Monday and Thursday. “People heard shots and a scream,” says CeCe Woods, publisher of a local Malibu paper. “They told everybody to lock their windows and their doors,” she says, “There was an active search. There were deputies who were pulled out of bed, called in for this search. that night on Thursday.” The entrance to Malibu Creek State Park In Calabasas, Calif., remains closed following a fatal shooting. June 28, 2018. (CBS2) Investigators have released very little information about the case. “Right after the murder,” says Woods, “There was talks of a description that they were going to release and then all of a sudden they held back from releasing it.” The city of Malibu pledged $5,000 to the reward and the LA County of Supervisors added $10,000. The LA County Sheriff’s added $15,000 more. LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl spoke to KNX 1070 about the reward. “I think this obviously is very serious,” Kuehl said, “and they don’t have enough information from the investigation, they haven’t been able to turn out any likely suspects or sufficient evidence which is why they wanted to offer the reward.” Woods hopes the reward money will climb even higher to help catch the killer. “There are residents there who hear and see everything,” Woods said, “everything all the time.” L.A. County Sheriff’s told Johnson they did a thorough investigation following the last report of shots fired but found no evidence.

LOS ANGELES (CBSNewYork/AP) — Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers say Ashley Judd’s allegations that he tried to hurt her career after she rejected him sexually are baseless, and they have asked a judge to dismiss her lawsuit against him. The court documents filed Wednesday discuss Judd’s comment that she would only let Weinstein touch her after she won an Academy Award in one of his films. Judd said the statement, which Weinstein brought up to her several times, was just a joking way to leave after he asked in a Beverly Hills hotel room if he could give her a massage or she could watch him shower. Weinstein’s lawyers are now saying it meant Judd acknowledged that Weinstein would try to get her movie roles. Judd’s attorney Theodore Boutrous Jr. says the claims in the filing are “baseless” and “offensive.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. ASPEN, Colo. (CBSNewYork/AP) — FBI Director Christopher Wray says Russian President Vladimir Putin has one version of what happened during the 2016 presidential election, but he’s got his own. Wray said Wednesday at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado that his view has not changed and he stands behind the intelligence agencies’ assessment that Moscow meddled in the election. And he says Russia continues malign activities to sow discord in America. He says Russia continues through fake news and propaganda to “spin up” Americans on either side of hot-button issues. He also dismissed Putin’s proposal to have Russian authorities aid in the investigation into the 12 Russian military intelligence officials indicted recently in connection with the election interference. Wray says Putin’s offer is “not high on our list of investigative techniques.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

The Priciest Real Estate Rentals In Beverly Hills
LOS ANGELES (CBS SPORTS) — The Dodgers have reportedly acquired All-Star infielder and pending free agent Manny Machado from the Orioles in exchange for a package of five prospects. Multiple outlets are reporting the deal as done. Machado had been one of the most coveted names leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline. In addition to the Dodgers, the Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Brewers had been heavily linked to Machado in recent days. In Los Angeles, Machado figures to be the primary shortstop — the position left vacant by Corey Seager’s season-ending Tommy John surgery. That means Chris Taylor would slide over the second base, thus filling what’s been a trouble spot for the Dodgers all season. In the end, the Dodgers in Machado are adding one of the best power hitters in baseball to an offense that already leads the National League in home runs. Machado, who just recently turned 26, is batting .315/.387/.575 (164 OPS+) for the season with 24 home runs in 94 games played. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 121 across parts of seven major-league seasons. While he’s been a primary third baseman for most of his career, this year he switched back to his original position of shortstop Machado is owed $6.3 million for the remainder of the season, and as mentioned he’s eligible for free agency this coming offseason. Considering the Dodgers have Seager and Justin Turner installed at shortstop and third base, respectively, through at least the 2020 season (when Turner’s contract expires), they’re likely viewing Machado as a temporary fix. Given that Machado seems bent on testing the market, it’s possible he wouldn’t be open to signing an extension even if the Dodgers had such interest. According to multiple reports, the Dodgers will not be receiving any cash in the deal. However, they do remain just under the luxury-tax threshold, which is in keeping with their recent organizational goals. The SportsLine Projection Model was already high on the Dodgers for the rest of the season and has them as the leader in World Series probability in the National League. The forecast gives the Dodgers a bit of a boost, going from 94.1 wins without Machado to 94.6 with the addition of the infielder. Postseason odds go from 94.7 to 96.5 percent with Machado. As far as winning the World Series? The Machado trade raises the Dodgers’ chances from 23.7 to 24 percent. On the Orioles’ side of things, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic names the five prospects they’ll receive: outfielder Yusniel Diaz (Dodgers No. 4 prospect coming into this season), third baseman Rylan Bannon (Dodgers No. 27 prospect), right-hander Dean Kremer (Dodgers No. 28 prospect), right-hander Zach Pop, and infielder Breyvic Valera. The headliner for Baltimore is Diaz, a 21-year-old product of Cuba who was a consensus top-100 prospect coming into the season. In 2018, he’s put up strong numbers in his first taste of Double-A. He profiles as a strong on-base threat at the highest level. Left to question is whether he’ll hit for power and whether he’ll be able to stick in center field. Bannon, 22 and a former eighth-rounder, has a strong .961 OPS on the season, albeit at hitter-friendly Rancho Cucamonga of the Cal League. He projects as a solid hitter with enough glove to stick at third. Kremer, 22, has solid velocity and life on his fastball, and he also has command of a slider and curve. His changeup could develop into a usable pitch at the highest level. This season, he’s put up strong numbers at Rancho. Pop, a 21-year-old relief prospect, has an ERA of 0.33 and more than a strikeout per inning across two seasons in the low minors. Valera, who’s spent time with the big-league club in 2018, is a 26-year-old switch-hitter who can play second, third, and the outfield corners. He hasn’t produced in limited action at the major-league level, but in the minors he showed good bat-to-ball skills and speed on the bases. — Dayn Perry, CBS Sports Writer
