LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 140 survivors of sexual abuse by a former team doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University joined hands on stage to be honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs. The women who spoke out against the abuse by Larry Nassar stood together Wednesday night in a powerful and solemn closing to the show highlighting the past year’s top athletes and moments in sports. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images) Gymnast Aly Raisman, softball player Tiffany Thomas Lopez and gymnast Sarah Klein, who said she was Nassar’s first victim 30 years ago, took turns speaking. Klein chided the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics and Michigan State for placing “money and medals above the safety of child athletes.” Olympic snowboarding champion Chloe Kim won a leading three ESPYs, including best female athlete, while Alex Ovechkin claimed best male athlete. Kim had tears in her eyes as she listened to the Arthur Ashe recipients. “We must start caring about children’s safety more than we care about adults’ reputations,” Klein said. “If we can just give one person the courage to use their voice, this is worth it.” Raisman added, “For too long we were ignored. It could have been avoided. All we needed was one adult to have the integrity to stand between us and Larry Nassar.” The audience gave the group a prolonged standing ovation and remained on its feet while the women spoke. “What a powerful stage up here,” host Danica Patrick said before signing off. Ovechkin joined Roger Federer and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White as double winners. Ovechkin was in Russia with his wife, Nastya, who is 8½ months pregnant. Newly retired racecar driver Patrick became the first woman to host the show at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Her opening monologue mostly fell flat, with athletes sitting stone-faced or wincing at many of the jokes. They’ve sacrificed so much for me.” Kim also claimed trophies for best female Olympian and female action sports athlete. At the Pyeongchang Games in February, she became the youngest to win a snowboarding medal when the then-17-year-old claimed gold in halfpipe. Ovechkin, who led the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup championship, also won for best NHL player. He beat out Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and fellow first-time nominees Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros and James Harden of the Houston Rockets for male athlete. Federer’s five-set victory at the Australian Open in January for his 20th Grand Slam singles title earned honors for record-breaking performance and he also received best male tennis player. White won best Olympic moment with his final-run performance in South Korea featuring back-to-back 1440s to take gold, and best male Olympian. The Astros were honored as best team for winning the franchise’s first World Series. LeBron James, soon to be starring across the street at Staples Center with the Los Angeles Lakers, won best NBA player for the third straight year on his 14th consecutive nomination in the category. Brady claimed best NFL player, while Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels won MLB player. On a big night for Olympians, the U.S. women’s hockey team earned best game honors for their shootout victory over Canada in the gold-medal game in South Korea. Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz earned breakthrough athlete honors. Quarterback Nick Foles received the championship performance trophy for leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl title. The Minnesota Vikings earned best moment honors for beating the New Orleans Saints on the last play of the NFL championship game. Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale won in the best play category for hitting a buzzer-beater in the NCAA women’s title game. The best coach award was given posthumously to Aaron Feis, Scott Beigel and Chris Hixon, all of whom died in the mass shooting at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Former quarterback Jim Kelly received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his struggle with jaw cancer. Fellow NFL Hall of Famers Dan Marino and John Elway presented Kelly with the honor. BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – Police opened fire on two suspects in Boyle Heights overnight Wednesday following a pursuit with a stolen car that ended when the suspects tried to run down the officers. There were no injuries. The male driver, a wanted parolee at large, was arrested on felony evading, weapons charges and assault on a police officer. The female passenger was also booked on unconfirmed charges. Their names were not immediately disclosed. According to South Gate police, the incident began just before midnight when officers attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation. The vehicle, which was carrying two people, refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. The chase wound its way through surface streets in South Gate, Huntington Park, Bell Gardens and Cudahy, where the car jumped onto the 5 Freeway northbound, police said. It then exited the freeway in Boyle Heights. The suspects entered a residential street, where the car became trapped in a cul-de-sac in the 900 block of South Grande Vista Avenue. According to police, the driver made a U-turn towards the officers and drove at them, prompting the officers to open fire on the suspects. Neither was struck and no officers were hurt. The car then struck a police cruiser and came to a stop. The two suspects were apprehended and a handgun was recovered. Police determined that the car had been stolen out of Lakewood. It’s unclear how many officers fired on the suspects.

(CNN/ CBS Local) — For the second month in a row, Time magazine has put a provocative photo illustration of President Trump on its cover — this time, morphing him into Russian President Vladimir Putin. In it, Trump’s distinctive blonde hair, wispy eyebrows and pursed lips merge with Putin’s nose and blue eyes. Time magazine cover of President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin morphed into the same person. (TIME) The stunning photo illustration, by visual artist Nancy Burson, “is meant to represent this particular moment in U.S. foreign policy, following the pair’s recent meeting in Helsinki, Finland,” Time said in a statement. Trump has weathered heavy criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike for his performance at the meeting, where he publicly sided with Putin over US intelligence agencies’ assessment that the Russians interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Since coming back home from Finland, the President has changed his messaging and now says he holds Putin personally responsible for the election meddling and believes the assessment of government intelligence agencies. In addition to the still image for the July 30 issue, Burson created a video image as well, which morphs back and forth between the seemingly-ever changing appearances of the two men. Just last month, Time used the President in another striking image on its cover, when the Trump administration’s policy that separated families crossing the US border was dominating the headlines. In that stark photo illustration, the towering figure of Trump looms over a sobbing child, who is the subject of a now-iconic photograph taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Moore. “Welcome to America,” the illustration reads. Use of the photo of the child generated controversy as well, after it was revealed that the 2-year-old Honduran girl had not been separated from her mother at the border. The latest image was created by a photography pioneer Burson, the designer of the latest cover, is a trailblazer in this type of art, starting with her work 30 years ago with scientists at MIT which led to the development of computer-generated compositing technology. She’s best known for developing a photographic face-aging technique that the FBI uses to find missing children, according to the Time statement. Her most famous aged image is the one of kidnapped 6-year-old Etan Patz that was on the front page of the New York Post in 1985. It showed what Patz might have looked like six years after his kidnapping. Burson told Time her goal with the Trump-Putin image was to make people “stop and think” about the similarities between the two leaders. “What my work has always been about is allowing people to see differently,” she said. “The combining of faces is a different way for people to see what they couldn’t see before.” (The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company contributed to this report. Memphis, TN (CNN/ CBS Local) — A Memphis woman said she feels betrayed after her date stole her car and then used it to go on a date with her God sister. As far as nights out go, Faith Pugh said the one she had Saturday with Kelton Griffin was disappointing from the beginning. She said when he showed up, he didn’t even bring his own car. “I don’t know who dropped him off. He just got dropped off,” Pugh said. Pugh said she knew Griffin from their years in high school, but hadn’t spoken to him much lately until he reached out and suggested dinner. “He just out of the blue texted me and asked me to go out,” Pugh said. They took Pugh’s black Volvo, but then Pugh said Griffin couldn’t decide where he wanted to take her. They ended up stopping at an Airport Area gas station. “He asked me could I go in the gas station for him to get a cigar,” she said. It turns out that was a big mistake. “He drove off. I came outside and my car was gone,” Pugh said. Pugh said her mother picked her up, but then she got a surprising text from her God sister, saying Griffin had asked her out. “I said, ‘Okay, well send me the address to where you at, and I’m on my way. Tell him to come on,’” she said. Pugh said they used the GPS on her God sister’s phone to tail Griffin before losing him, but then found him again at a drive-in movie theater on Summer Avenue. Pugh said he was in her car with her God sister. “He let her drive, so she drove him to the drive-in. He didn’t even have any money. She actually paid their way to get in the drive-in just so I could get my car back,” Pugh said. Police arrested Griffin that night. It’s not his first arrest. In 2016, police said he and two other men ate out before robbing a restaurant. If he’s looking for company for his next meal out, Pugh said he needn’t look to her. “I hope he’s in jail for a long time. I never want to speak to him ever again,” she said.
