NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are searching for a suspect who they say burglarized a church rectory in Queens. Investigators released surveillance images with a clear shot of the suspect’s face. It happened early Thursday morning at the Lady of Perpetual Help rectory on 115th Street in South Ozone Park. Police say he got in through an unlocked side window and stole about $115 in checks and cash. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by visiting the Crime Stoppers website or by texting tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

QUARTZ HILL (CBSLA) — A 10-year-old boy who was allegedly tortured to death by his mother and her boyfriend will be laid to rest Friday. The service for Anthony Avalos begins at 9 a.m. with a rosary and viewing at the Saint Junipero Serra Parish Church, 12121 60th Street West in Quartz Hill, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Anthony will be interred at the Good Shepherd Cemetery, 48121 70th Street West. A special dress code was requested by friends and family. “We would like if everyone can wear superhero shirts, in honor of Anthony,” a funeral notice from the family said. Anthony was found unresponsive in his mother’s home June 20. He died the next day. In court filings, prosecutors alleged Anthony was severely tortured during the last five or six days of his life and that his mother and her boyfriend “abused, beat, assaulted and tortured Anthony Avalos.” The alleged abuse included whipping the boy with a belt and a looped cord, pouring hot sauce on his face and mouth, holding him by his feet and dropping him on his head repeatedly. Anthony’s mother, Heather Barron, 28, and her boyfriend, Kareem Leiva, 32, have been charged with murder and torture in the boy’s death. A county official said earlier that the boy had come out as gay in the weeks before his death, and authorities were trying to determine if homophobia may have played a role in his death. CHATSWORTH (CBSLA) – A car careened into a power pole in Chatsworth early Friday morning, downing live wires and shutting down a major intersection. The collision occurred at 3:30 a.m. in the area of Devonshire Street and Topanga Canyon Road. According to Los Angeles police, a car lost control and slammed into the power pole, bringing it down and exposing several wires. There were no injuries. Drugs and alcohol were not believed to have been involved. The intersection was shut down as of 7 a.m. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews were on scene clearing the debris. About 200 LADWP customers were without power. Restoration was expected by 9 a.m.

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA) — Parents are unnerved Friday after two syringes were found at a Sherman Oaks park playground. One syringe was initially found at the universal playground of the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Recreation Center, 14201 Huston Street, Thursday afternoon, prompting the Los Angeles Police Department to issue a warning. Community Alert! Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park -14201 Huston St. Syringes found in the sand box!! @LACityParks cleared the park and located an additional syringe during the search. @lapdVanNuysDiv has opened up an investigation and is providing extra patrol. pic.twitter.com/ox4KjG29Sf — Lillian L. Carranza (@LAPDCARRANZA) July 20, 2018 The playground was cleared and shut down, and crews from LA Parks and Recreation went through the sand with a sifter and found a second syringe. Visitors to the park were alarmed to hear that such dangerous items were found within the playground. “Well, it’s horrific,” said Vaughn Hart, who was walking in the park early Friday. “I mean, if they’re going to do it, do it away – anywhere away from where the children play.” Police say they are doing a full investigation to find out where the syringes came from, and are stepping up patrols at the park.
