HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS Philly) – Officials say a woman died while shielding one of her two daughters as a house came crashing down on top of them Monday morning in Hamilton, New Jersey. Crews found the 38-year-old woman’s body on top of her 16-year-old daughter. The woman’s 20-year-old daughter was stuck in debris up to her waist when she called 9-1-1. A neighbor comforted her while first responders arrived. “It’s devastating, it’s like being in a war zone,” the neighbor said. “She was half in tears, and so was I. She was buried in rubble.” The two daughters are in the hospital with serious injuries as investigators work to determine what caused the home to collapse. They say at this time, it doesn’t appear gas related. For ongoing coverage, see CBS Philly.com .

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A total of 12 buildings near the site last week’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron district have now been declared safe allowing businesses to reopen and residents are returning home. For those in the 33 buildings still closed, the excruciating wait lingered on. “It’s very unsettling,” said David Base, one of those affected when the blast near 21st Street and Fifth Avenue sent asbestos-filled steam and pieces of the pipe flying. “We really have no indication how long will be before we can fully return and actually live in our homes again,” he said. Crews have been spraying the facades of buildings to wash off any asbestos. Elizabeth Reid lives close to the accident site. Her building was not closed down but she has not returned to her apartment anyway. “I’m not sure how safe things are,” she said. “I don’t safe living there right now?” Photos: Massive Steam Pipe Explosion In Manhattan’s Flatiron District Con Edison is compensating displaced households $500, and noting those who do not feel that amount is enough can file a claim for “other related expenses.” We've made significant progress this weekend on the clean-up front and the work continues. #safetyfirst #steamprogress #conedison pic.twitter.com/EakaHsjn06 — Con Edison (@ConEdison) July 23, 2018 The Office of Emergency Management will says NYPD will be offering to help residents of the closed buildings who may have left critical items in their apartment such as necessary medication. WASHINGTON, DC (CBSNewYork) – In this unassuming brick building in Newark, N.J., is a more than 100-year-old family run business making something you might not expect to have roots in the garden state: Cowboy hats. “It’s a big surprise that we make so many hats, and we make them in Newark,” said Dean Serratelli of the Serratelli Hat Company. “We’ve basically had to survive by manufacturing in the United States.” Because Serratelli has been manufacturing his wide-brimmed beauties in the USA for decades, it was picked to represent New Jersey in President Trump’s “Made in America” showcase in Washington D.C., reports CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez. “After many years of decline, American manufacturing is coming back bigger and better and stronger than ever before,” said Trump on Monday. One manufacturer from each state is showcasing their U.S.-made products at the White House, including the Wiffle Ball, Inc. from Shelton, Conn. “I know how difficult it is for companies to make a decision either to stay in the U.S. or to go,” said David Mullany, president of Wiffle Ball, Inc. “We’re focused on making our products where we are,” he said. “Our products are sourced domestically. We just gotta keep our heads down and keep doing what we’re doing.” Today’s event comes as the Trump administration battles it out in a trade war with China and the European Union. “I think we’re already becoming more pro-U.S. manufacturing with what President Trump is doing with China right now,” said Serratelli “I’d to see us push more and thrive in those circumstances.” “We have a mother and son working here,” added Ali Ehsan, director of operations at the Serratelli Hat Co. Ehsan believes success comes from a strong family foundation. “It’s like you know everybody takes pride in what kind of hat we make, and really put the effort in there,” he said. One hat can take as little as 20 minutes to make depending on its design. Esahn says they make as many as 1,200 in one day.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CBS Local) – A leading member in the Democratic party is calling for a nationwide legalization of marijuana. Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, who challenged and nearly defeated Nancy Pelosi for the role of Minority Leader in 2016, says it’s time to make the drug legal for recreational use in all 50 states. The democrat’s argument was heavily based on the belief that arrests for marijuana possession have become a punishment that doesn’t fit the crime. “I believe no person should be sentenced to a lifetime of hardship because of a marijuana arrest,” Ryan wrote on Facebook . The congressman argues that more Americans were arrested in 2017 for marijuana possession than for all violent crimes combined. In an op-ed for CNN , Ryan claims studies have shown that legalizing marijuana would save law enforcement agencies $7.7 billion in operating costs while regenerating $6 billion in new tax revenue. “Incarcerating young men and women, instead of educating and empowering them, is how our country gets left behind on the world stage,” the article adds. Medical marijuana has already become a growing industry with the United States with some states adding more ailments to the list of approved conditions Americans can treat with cannabis.
