“Sweet Spot,” by Mike Sugerman NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Every couple minutes, someone like Mark Anderson and family, of Edinburgh, Scotland, find their way to Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios on Eighth Street in the West Village. “It’s spine-tingling to be honest. You can take all the churches and the castles that we have back home but you can forget them, I want to stand by Electric Lady Studio,” he says. Hendrix opened Electric Lady Studios and lived in the cottage in the back until just died in 1970. Now, there’s a movement to have the street renamed in his honor. “’Jimi Hendrix Way’ is our social movement to create a little bit of nostalgia, history, commemoration and excitement on Eighth Street,” says Storm Ritter, owner of Storm Ritter Studio, a boutique down the street from Electric Lady Studios. She’s a young woman who would have been quite comfortable back in the ‘60s, but it’s the realities of half a century later that she’s dealing with now. “All you see are so many empty storefronts, it’s – challenging and it really translates really well to the tourists, to the residents, and to the overall area,” she says. “I’ve seen hundreds of store close,” says Richard Geist, who’s owned Uncle Sam’s Army Navy since 1998. Jimi Hendrix Way? ‘Way cool,’ he says. “No, if this was called ‘Jimi Hendrix Way’ it would make a huge difference in our sales, in our employment of people, sales tax and on and on and on…” he says. But officially co-naming a street in New York City is no easy task. It’s a process Ritter says will take at least a year. “We have to have a petition, and we have to letters of recommendation, we need to have support from the community board, which we’ll propose down the road. Right now, it’s really what we’re just pushing is making a community,” she says. Trying to make a truly ‘Jimi Hendrix Experience.’ Find more from the “Sweet Spot” here.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Prospect Park is going car-free. The park’s entire loop drive went car-free as part of an experiment this summer , which officials said was a success with park-goers. “Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s backyard,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “And I have always wanted it to be the safe, quiet refuge for Brooklyn’s families it was intended to be. Restoring Prospect Park as a car-free oasis will improve the lives of the millions who use the park today and of generations to come.” The park’s East Drive will remain open to cars during morning rush hours until January 2 of next year, when they will be banned. The Department of Transportation estimates recreational users outnumber cars during morning rush hours 1,000 to 300. “This is really about getting back to the original idea of this park, restoring it to its original purpose. It needs to be a place for everyone, and it needs to be a place that’s safe, and it needs to be a place that people can fully enjoy,” de Blasio said.

(CBS Local) — A man wanted by Michigan police decided to troll law enforcement on Facebook and quickly found out that the joke was on him. The man, who calls himself Champagne Torino on Facebook, made a bet with the Redford Township Police Department in Michigan after trolling them about another crime. Torino wagered with police that if their next Facebook post was shared over 1,000 times, he would not only turn himself in, but also bring officers donuts and clean up the litter around all the local public schools. Torino is reportedly wanted by police in Michigan for “existing warrants.” Redford police quickly picked up the Oct. 6 challenge by the crook, whose real name is Michael according to authorities, saying in their response, “he promised us donuts! You know how much we love donuts!” To Torino’s embarrassment, the post was shared by the department’s followers over 1,000 times after just one hour . Redford police decided to “drop the mic” on Torino after easily winning the bet. The department then thanked all the supporters who shared the post and setting Torino up for a day of picking up trash. “It is our experience everyone gets caught at some point,” Redford officers posted. Police are still waiting for the wanted internet troll to turn himself in, but posted on social media on Oct. 7 that Torino told them he would be coming in to pay off his bet during the following week.

LAS VEGAS (CBSNewYork/AP) — The motive behind the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history remained a mystery as police sought to learn more about the suspected “lone wolf” gunman who they say opened fire on tens of thousands of concertgoers from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel. At least 59 people were killed and more than 500 others injured in the shooting Sunday night. Las Vegas Shooting: Latest | Photos | Videos | The Victims The suspected gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock , wasn’t on law enforcement’s radar. They think he acted alone. Police said he had 23 guns, some with scopes, in the room on the 32nd floor at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino where he had been staying since Thursday. He knocked out two windows to create sniper’s perches he used to rain torrents of bullets on the crowd of 22,000 gathered for the outdoor country music concert below some 500 yards away, authorities said. The crowd, funneled tightly into a wide-open space, had little cover and no easy way to escape. Victims fell to the ground, while others fled in panic. Some hid behind concession stands or crawled under parked cars. “I looked behind me and a woman was shot in her neck,” said survivor Elisa Sang. “The blood was just coming out all over the place and she collapsed on the ground.” Police said Paddock killed himself as authorities stormed his hotel room. The suspect lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, about an hour and half from Las Vegas. At Paddock’s home, authorities found 19 more guns, explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Also, several pounds of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer that can be turned into explosives, were in his car, authorities said. He was an accountant and most recently a professional gambler who’d won large jackpots. Paddock was also a licensed hunter and pilot and made millions in real estate investments. Authorities believe Paddock acted alone. While he appeared to have no criminal history, his father was a bank robber who was on the FBI’s most-wanted list in the 1960s. Officials are also looking to talk with Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, who they don’t believe was involved. She is currently out of the country. “I can’t even make something up,” his brother in Florida, Eric Paddock, said when asked what might have motivated his brother. “There’s just nothing.” ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, but investigators say so far they have found no link between Paddock and the terrorist group. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Las Vegas on Wednesday. (© Copyright 2017 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

Investigators Look For Motive In Deadly Las Vegas Mass Shooting
LINDENHURST, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — As officials target vape stores and hookah lounges in one Long Island community, owners and patrons of those shops claim it’s unfair discrimination. As CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported, two dozen vape shops and hookah lounges have opened across Long Island’s South Shore in the past year. The Village of Lindenhurst wants to put on the brakes, with a controversial proposal to ban all e-cigarette stores, medical marijuana dispensaries and water-pipe smoke shops. Village officials decided to take action after hearing complaints from parents of children who passed by some of the lounges on their way to and from school and the local library. John Lappas, who helps manage the store Clean Vapor, calls the proposed crackdown a Big Brother-type move. “I don’t think it’s anything to be afraid of,” he said. “It’s 21 and up to purchase anything here.” E-cigarette user Leo Pensa claims the devices are merely a stress reducer. “On Long Island, there’s a big drug problem pretty much,” he said. “We should just crack down more on harmful drugs than e-cigarettes.” “Or what about the underage drinking that sometimes happens in the bars on the strip?” added Christina Martin, who also uses e-cigarettes. “What about that? Why are you focusing on this industry?” Martin said she believes vaping helped her break her addiction to cigarettes. “I was a pack-a-day smoker at the time that I quit, and I was 18,” she said. “And I haven’t touched a single one since.” New Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata said the jury is still out on health risks and he wants a safe and family-friendly environment “We want people to walk our downtown and not have to look at vape stores,” he said. “In my opinion, vape stores and hookah bars and things of this nature just don’t fit in with the downtown we’re looking to create.” If the ban is to go through, a law must be created and a public hearing held. The first chance for debate is 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lindenhurst Village Hall. If the law is enacted, already-established vape stores and hookah lounges would not have to close, but no new ones could open and no medical marijuana dispensaries would be welcome in Lindenhurst.
