NEW YORK (CBS News) — The New York Yankees are known for standing out from the rest of the league. But this time, the 27-time World Series champions are taking some heat for it. They could soon become the only Major League Baseball team not to hold an LGBTQ Pride Night event. Twenty-four of the MLB’s 30 teams are set to hold gay pride celebrations this season and a total of 28 teams have held such events at some point. This week, Forbes reported the Los Angeles Angels will join the ranks by holding a Pride Night in June 2019. That would leave the Yankees as the lone holdout. “Pride Nights are really important to show the LGBTQ community that they are just as welcome as anyone else,” New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, the first openly gay man to hold that job and noted Red Sox fan , told CBS News in a statement. “The Yankees are one of the most famous sporting teams in the world. They should be leading by example.” “Let’s be honest — for a long time the world of sports felt closed off to gay people. Even now there are very few openly gay professional athletes,” he added. The Yankees have previously participated in GLAAD’s Spirit Day Campaign , which is organized by the group and the MLB to show support for LGBTQ youth. “As a lifelong Yankees fan, some of my favorite memories growing up are with my family at the games and when I came out it would have meant the world to me to see the Yankees recognize my community,” Rich Ferraro, GLAAD ‘s chief communications officer, told CBS News in a statement. “Though the Yankees have a history of being supportive of LGBTQ people, a LGBTQ Pride Night is a major moment to make sure all fans feel included in the game,” Ferraro said. The Yankees’ crosstown rival, the New York Mets, first held a Pride celebration during the 2016 season — the first of its kind among any Big Apple sports teams , the Mets said at the time. David Kilmnick, CEO of the LGBT Network , was the first person to pitch the idea of Pride Night to the Mets, according to NBC News , and he said he tried to do the same with the Yankees, despite being a lifelong Mets fan. It’s not only LGBTQ events, though — the Yankees have mostly avoided promotions with an “ethnic or cultural flavor,” The New York Times noted last year. The Yankees did not respond to CBS News’ request for comment, but a team spokesman told The Times that while the Yankees have chosen to refrain from holding a gay pride event at Yankee Stadium, there has been involvement “behind the scenes.” “Everyone of every nationality, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation and/or preference is welcome at Yankee Stadium every day,” Jason Zillo told The Times in a 2017 statement. “We are a long-term believer in diversity and inclusion, and have always looked to create a safe and supportive environment for all fans to enjoy their experience here.” The sports world as a whole has slowly warmed to the LGBTQ community. In 2015, a Milwaukee Brewers minor league player, David Denson made baseball history when he came out as the first openly gay player in the MLB . In 2014, Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by a National Football League team. Also in 2014, Jason Collins became the NBA’s first openly gay active player . “When I was a closeted high school football player, I thought I would be ostracized if I came out. It was tough. A lot has changed in the world since then but not enough,” Johnson, the city council speaker, said. Last month, the MLB entered a float in the NYC Pride March for the first time in its 49-year history . The league joined the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLS, WNBA and National Women’s Hockey League at the annual event, which Outsports dubbed the “ sportiest Pride March ever .” Same-sex marriage has been legal in New York state since the Marriage Equality Act took effect in July 2011. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Budget talks broke down Friday in New Jersey, as the deadline approaches for a government shutdown. Gov. Phil Murphy , Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin held dueling news conferences after hours of meetings late Friday to announce their inability to come to a deal, capping more than a week of disagreements over how much taxes should go up to finance higher school aid, increased transit spending and a bigger pension payment. The officials have until midnight Saturday to enact a balanced budget or face a state government shutdown. State parks, beaches and the Motor Vehicle Commission would close. Casinos and tollbooths would remain open, and police and emergency workers would stay on the job. The attorney general’s office said in a letter that racetracks would close in the event of a shutdown because they failed to apply for a permit required under law to remain open. More: ‘Nothing Off The Table’: Gov. Murphy Speaks As NJ Shutdown Looms The leaders and Murphy say they’re open to continuing talks, but had nothing immediately planned. It was unclear how Murphy would act on the budget that sits on his desk. He says “all options” are on the table, and has previously said he would veto the spending plan because it doesn’t contain enough tax revenue to support spending. The disagreements have centered on taxes. Murphy wants income taxes hiked on people making more than $1 million from 8.97 percent to 10.75 percent, amounting to the fulfillment of a campaign promise, and a higher sales tax from 6.625 percent to 7 percent. More: Murphy Has Big Plans, Unveils First Budget As N.J.’s Governor Sweeney and Coughlin instead sent him a budget that hiked the business tax, including adding a new tier that would have given the state the highest corporate rate in the country at 13 percent, but only for two years. On Friday, lawmakers offered a 9.95 percent rate on income over $5 million, as well as a phase-down of the business rate over four years, in line with Murphy’s request to keep the state from having the highest rate in the country. But Murphy, a wealthy former Goldman Sachs executive, called the tax on those making more than $5 million “symbolic.” He pointed out that even he wouldn’t be subject to the new higher rate. “I still hope we’ll figure something out here,” he said. “But it has to be something that is consistent with who we are and what we’re standing for and why folks elected us.” Sweeney said Murphy didn’t counter lawmakers’ proposal on the income tax and compared Murphy to his predecessor, suggesting he was stubbornly refusing to deal. “You know Chris Christie wanted it my way or the highway, too,” Sweeney said. “We wanted compromise. There’s none been offered.” Sweeney also argued that he wanted Murphy to address the state’s public worker health benefits, with the goal of cutting costs. Christie shuttered state government last year over three days after he and lawmakers failed to enact a budget. The stalemate ended after photos of Christie on a closed public beach where the state maintains a residence for the governor were published by NJ.com, creating a national stir. MADISON, Wis. (CBSNewYork/AP) — President Donald Trump was in Wisconsin Thursday where he took part in a roundtable with supporters and delivered a speech in Milwaukee. The president also attended a groundbreaking ceremony for electronics manufacturer Foxconn’s new factory in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. Should Foxconn employ 13,000 workers as envisioned, it would be the largest private-sector employer in Wisconsin. Trump’s visit comes as he is trying to keep Wisconsin and other upper Midwest states in his column. Trump visited Minnesota last week and North Dakota on Wednesday. Trump carried Wisconsin by less than 1 point — just under 23,000 votes. He’s underwater in popularity, with only 44 percent of respondents in last week’s Marquette University Law School poll approving of the job he’s doing, while 50 percent disapproved.
